Preparation and characterization of a novel xanthated chitosan

Synthesis of chitosan succinate-g-amine functionalized mesoporous silica: Inorganic-organic nanohybrid for antibacterial assessment, antioxidant activity and pH-controlled drug delivery

An innovative and proficient inorganic-organic nanohybrid was synthesized by using amine modified MCM-41 as an inorganic precursor combined with organic moiety, a derivative of chitosan i.e. chitosan succinate through amide bond. These nanohybrids can be used in diverse applications due to potential combination of desired properties of inorganic and organic components. The nanohybrid was characterized by FTIR, TGA, small angle powder XRD, zeta potential, particle size distribution, BET, proton NMR and ¹³C NMR techniques to confirm its formation. The synthesized hybrid was loaded with curcumin drug to check its potential application for controlled drug release, showing 80 % drug release in acidic medium (i.e. pH -5.0), while physiological pH -7.4 shows only 25 % release. The encapsulation efficiency of nanohybrid is 87.24 %. The results of antibacterial performances are demonstrated in terms of ZOI (zone of inhibition) which depicts that hybrid material shows better ZOI in gram negative (E. coli) than for gram positive (B. subtilis) bacteria. Nanohybrid was also tested for the antioxidant activity by using two different methods (DPPH and ABTS) radical scavenging methods. The ability of nano-hybrid to scavenge DPPH radicals was found 65 %, and ability to scavenge ABTS radicals was 62.47 %.

A review on super-wettable porous membranes and materials based on bio-polymeric chitosan for oil-water separation

Appropriate surface wettability of membranes and materials are of an extreme importance for targeting separation of mixtures/emulsions such as oil from water or conversely water from oil. The development of super-wettable membranes and materials surfaces have shown remarkable potential for recovering water from oil-water emulsion while offering maximum resistance to fouling. The availability of clean and potable water has been regarded as an important global challenge for coming human generations. Oil and gas industry is continuously producing immense quantities of waste stream regarded as produced water which contains oil dispersed in water along with other several components. Treating such immense quantities of oily wastewater is of utmost need for recovering precious water for possible reuse or safe disposal. Various technologies have been developed for targeting the separation of oil-water emulsions or mixtures to harness useful potable water and oil as products. Membrane-based separations or use of porous materials such as mesh have been explored in literature for separation of oil-water mixtures/emulsions. Given the unique features of special hydrophilicity, ease of tunability, control of molecular weight, abundant availability, and potential for commercial scale up, chitosan has been extensively used for modifying membranes/meshes or preparing composites with other materials for oil-water separations. This review has described in detail the synthesis, methods of modification and application of chitosan-based super-wettable membranes/meshes and porous materials for oil-water separation. The special wettability features including super-hydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, super-oleophobicity/super-hydrophilicity and super-hydrophilicity/underwater super-oleophobicity of various chitosan-based membranes and materials have been discussed in detail in the review. The strategies for enhancing or developing special wettability for target specific applications have also been discussed. Finally, the challenges, their respective importance have been identified along with a discussion on possible solutions to these challenges.

Dynamic Adsorption Characteristics of Phosphorus Using MBCQ

Biochar is a new type of adsorption material with excellent performance, but it has some problems, such as light texture, poor sedimentation, and difficult recovery, which limits its practical application. In this study, biochar microspheres (MBCQ) were prepared by the sol–gel method using powdery biochar from Hydrocotyle vulgaris as raw material and sodium alginate as a granular carrier. Experiments were performed to investigate the dynamic adsorption characteristics of phosphorus by MBCQ in the adsorption column and the influences of particle size, initial phosphorus concentration, flow rate, and column height on the breakthrough curve. The results showed that the static adsorption properties of different particles varied and that 3-millimeter particles were optimal. The breakthrough time positively correlated with column height and negatively correlated with initial phosphorus concentration, flow rate, and particle size. Flow velocity significantly impacted breakthrough time and length of mass transfer. The bed depth/service time model accurately predicted the relationship between breakthrough times and column heights. When ct/c0 = 0.6, the average relative deviation between predicted and measured values was the lowest. The Thomas model described the MBCQ adsorption process of Ph (R2 > 0.95), which indicated that diffusion in MBCQ adsorption was not a rate-limiting step.

Preparation of Teucrium polium extract-loaded chitosan-sodium lauryl sulfate beads and chitosan-alginate films for wound dressing application

This study aimed to formulate sodium lauryl sulfate cross-linked chitosan beads and sodium alginate-chitosan films for designing a dressing that would shorten the healing time of skin wounds. Teucrium polium extract-loaded chitosan-sodium lauryl sulfate beads (CH-SLS) and chitosan-alginate (CH-ALG) films were prepared and characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling properties of the CH-SLS beads were also analyzed in a water solution. The obtained Teucrium polium extract-loaded CH-SLS beads and CH-ALG films (TBF) were further incorporated into the commercial adhesive dressing. This TBF wound dressing was then investigated for evaluation of its wound healing potential in the mice using the excision wound model. Healing was assessed by the macroscopic appearance and the rate of wound contraction during 8 days. On day 4, the TBF-treated wounds exhibited 98% reduction in the wound area when they were compared with healing ointment, elastic adhesive dressing, and untreated wounds which were exhibited 63%, 43%, and 32%, respectively. Furthermore, the application of TBF dressing reduced skin wound rank scores and increased the percentage of wounds contraction. These results demonstrate that TBF dressing improves considerably the healing rate and the macroscopic wound appearance at a short delay and this application may have therapeutic benefits in wound healing.

Preparation of Freeze-Dried Porous Chitosan Microspheres for the Removal of Hexavalent Chromium

Novel porous chitosan microspheres were successfully produced by a freezing–lyophilization drying method in this study and were then used as adsorbents to remove a toxic iron metal, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The effects of the concentration of the chitosan solution, syringe diameter, and freezing time on the morphologies of porous chitosan microspheres were characterized. The metal ion adsorption for Cr(VI) was also studied. Results showed that freezing chitosan hydrogel beads at a temperature of −20 °C and subsequently lyophilizing the frozen structure allowed to easily obtain the porous chitosan microspheres with rough surfaces and large pores, which were more suitable for adsorption materials to remove metal ions. A chitosan solution concentration of 3% (w/v) and a syringe diameter of 500 μm allowed the porous microspheres to have a good sphericity, thinner pore walls, and small pore sizes. The adsorption capacity of porous chitosan microspheres for Cr(VI) increased with the increase in freezing time. The pH of the initial adsorption solution ranged from 3.0 to 5.0 and was beneficial to the maximum adsorption efficiency for Cr(VI). The porous chitosan microspheres prepared with 3% (w/v) chitosan solution at −20 °C for a freezing time of 72 h had a higher adsorption capacity of 945.2 mg/g for Cr(VI) than the those at 24-h and 48-h freezing times. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption process could be described by a pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption rate constant and the adsorption amount at equilibrium for the porous chitosan microspheres increased with an increase in the freezing time, and those for the porous microspheres prepared with 3% chitosan solution at −20 °C for a 72-h freezing time were 1.83 × 10−5 g mg−1 min−1 and 1070.5 mg g−1, respectively. The porous chitosan microspheres have good potential to facilitate the separation and recycling of expensive and toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Improving the Quality and Safety of Fresh Camel Meat Contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni Using Citrox, Chitosan, and Vacuum Packaging to Extend Shelf Life

This study aimed to investigate the influence of using 1% or 2% Citrox alone or in combination with 1% chitosan on the survival of Campylobacter jejuni in camel meat slices vacuum-packed and stored at 4 or 10 °C for 30 days. The shelf life of camel meat was 30 days longer using 1% or 2% Citrox in combination with 1% chitosan than when using Citrox alone. The reductions ranged from 4.0 to 3.5 logarithmic cycles during the storage period at both 4 and 10 °C. The quality of camel meat treated with Citrox plus chitosan was also better than that of the control meat and of meat treated with 0.85% NaCl.

Abstract

Camel meat is one of the most consumed meats in Arab countries. The use of natural antimicrobial agents to extend the shelf life of fresh camel meat, control Campylobacter jejuni contamination, and preserve meat quality is preferred. In this study, we determined the antimicrobial effects of using 1% or 2% Citrox alone or in combination with 1% chitosan on the survival of C. jejuni in vitro and on camel meat samples during storage at 4 or 10 °C for 30 days in vacuum packaging. We determined the total viable count (TVC (cfu/g)), total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) content, and pH of the treated camel meat samples every three days during storage. The shelf lives of camel meat samples treated with 2% Citrox alone or in combination with 1% chitosan were longer than those of camel meat samples treated with 1% Citrox alone or in combination with 1% chitosan at both the 4 and 10 °C storage temperatures, with TVCs of <100 cfu/g after the first ten days and six days of storage at 4 and 10 °C, respectively. The addition of Citrox (1% and 2%) and 1% chitosan to camel meat samples and the application of vacuum storage were more effective than using Citrox (1% and 2%) alone and led to a reduction in C. jejuni in approximately 4.0 and 3.5 log cycles at 4 and 10 °C, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that using a Citrox-chitosan combination improved the quality of camel meat and enhanced the long-term preservation of fresh meat for up to or more than 30 days at 4 °C.

Xanthate-modified alginates for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions: A brief analysis of alginate xanthation

Mining is the most common activity that introduces heavy metal ions into aquatic ecosystems, especially in low income-developing nations where governments are implementing stricter regulations for industrial wastewater. In this context, this work is focused on the application of xanthate-modified alginates for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions. In order to confirm the presence of xanthate groups alongside alginate chains, characterization by second-derivative FT-IR was carried out and significance evidence attributed to xanthate groups was found at around 1062-1079 cm^-1, 829-845 cm^-1 and 620-602 cm^-1. In addition to this, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were employed to explore thermal properties of modified alginates. According to these results, enthalpy changes (∆H) characteristic of dehydration and collapse of biopolymeric structure were estimated as +11.41 J/g and -6.83 J/g, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of S element was confirmed by EDS mapping technique, whereas FESEM image showed a cracked and homogeneous surface distribution. On the other hand, the effect of important parameters such as pH, dosage, initial concentration as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were deeply discussed. Finally, rheological measurements were performed aiming to investigate the gel-like viscoelastic features associated to nickel xanthate compound.

Chitosan-triggered immunity to Fusarium in chickpea is associated with changes in the plant extracellular matrix architecture, stomatal closure and remodeling of the plant metabolome and proteome

Pathogen-/microbe-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs/MAMPs) initiate complex defense responses by reorganizing the biomolecular dynamics of the host cellular machinery. The extracellular matrix (ECM) acts as a physical scaffold that prevents recognition and entry of phytopathogens, while guard cells perceive and integrate signals metabolically. Although chitosan is a known MAMP implicated in plant defense, the precise mechanism of chitosan-triggered immunity (CTI) remains unknown. Here, we show how chitosan imparts immunity against fungal disease. Morpho-histological examination revealed stomatal closure accompanied by reductions in stomatal conductance and transpiration rate as early responses in chitosan-treated seedlings upon vascular fusariosis. Electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy showed ECM fortification leading to oligosaccharide signaling, as documented by increased galactose, pectin and associated secondary metabolites. Multiomics approach using quantitative ECM proteomics and metabolomics identified 325 chitosan-triggered immune-responsive proteins (CTIRPs), notably novel ECM structural proteins, LYM2 and receptor-like kinases, and 65 chitosan-triggered immune-responsive metabolites (CTIRMs), including sugars, sugar alcohols, fatty alcohols, organic and amino acids. Identified proteins and metabolites are linked to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, stomatal movement, root nodule development and root architecture coupled with oligosaccharide signaling that leads to Fusarium resistance. The cumulative data demonstrate that ROS, NO and eATP govern CTI, in addition to induction of PR proteins, CAZymes and PAL activities, besides accumulation of phenolic compounds downstream of CTI. The immune-related correlation network identified functional hubs in the CTI pathway. Altogether, these shifts led to the discovery of chitosan-responsive networks that cause significant ECM and guard cell remodeling, and translate ECM cues into cell fate decisions during fusariosis.

An environment-friendly composite as an adsorbent for removal Cu (II) ions

The low-cost composite film was prepared by incorporating chitosan, berry soap fruit extract (rarasaponin), and bentonite as the raw materials. The produced chitosan/rarasaponin/bentonite (CRB) composite exhibits outstanding adsorption capability toward copper metal ions (Cu(II)). A series of static adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the isotherm and kinetic properties of CRB composite in the adsorption process. The adsorption equilibrium shows a good fit with the Langmuir isotherm model; the CRB composite has maximum uptake of Cu (II) of 412.70 mg/g; the kinetic adsorption data exhibit a good fit with the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters, ΔH°, ΔG°, and ΔS°, obtained from the isotherm data indicate that the uptake of copper ions by CRB composite is more favored at low temperatures. This study shows that physicochemical modified adsorbent, namely CRB composite, can remove Cu (II) better than pristine adsorbent of AAB and chitosan. The CRB composite also shows potential reusability.

Biomimetic mineralization behavior of COS-grafted silk fibroin following hexokinase-mediated phosphorylation

Silk fibroin (SF) has potential applications in the biomedical field because of its excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In the current study, chitooligosaccharide (COS) was enzymatically grafted onto SF using laccase. Subsequently, COS-grafted SF (SF-g-COS) was treated enzymatically in the presence of hexokinase and Mg-chelated adenosine triphosphate (ATP), so as to introduce phosphate groups onto the fibroin chains and promote the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) during in situ biomimetic mineralization. The efficacy of phosphorylation and biomimetic mineralization of the SF-g-COS was evaluated by means of HPLC, MALDI-TOF MS, FTIR, XRD and EDS-Mapping. The results indicate that hexokinase has the capability to catalyze the phosphorylation of COS, resulting in an increase in the quantity of phosphorus in the SF-g-COS. Following mineralization of the phosphorylated SF-g-COS, a greater number of mineral phases were detected on its surface, accompanied by a higher content of calcium and phosphorus compared with other specimens. Cell viability tests using NIH/3T3 cells and cellular adhesion potential with MG-63 cells indicated that the fibroin-based biocomposite exhibited acceptable biocompatibility and superior cellular adhesion properties. The present study describes a novel method for preparation of fibroin/HAp biocomposites for bone tissue engineering.

Composite nanofibers membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan for selective lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions removal from wastewater

The nanofibers membranes were fabricated by poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PVA/Chi) using an electro-spun technique for selective and high adsorption of lead (Pb(II)) and cadmium (Cd(II)) ions based on the solution acidity. The PVA/Chi NFs membranes were characterized systematically using several instrumentations. In addition, several experimental parameters such as initial metal ions concentration, interaction time, adsorbent dosage, solution pH and the effects of competing ions on Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption were evaluated. The adsorption data were also clarified that the PVA/Chi NFs membranes were exhibited high kinetic performances towards the both toxic ions at the optimum conditions. The adsorption data were manipulated using different kinetics models, and it was confirmed that only pseudo-second-order model obeyed the adsorption kinetics for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. Similarly, the equilibrium data were well fitted with the Langmuir adsorption isotherms model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 266.12 and 148.79 mg/g for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions, respectively. The Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions adsorptions were also measured to know the selectivity with simulated environmental solution, and the data were confirmed the high selectivity to Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions at the optimum condition and the nanofibers membrane shown the potentiality for possible use in efficient removal of the selected toxic ions from waste samples. Thus, the PVA/Chi NFs are considered to be effective and promising materials for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from wastewaters with high efficiency.

Application of hybrid bead, persimmon leaf and chitosan for the treatment of aqueous solution contaminated with toxic heavy metal ions

In this study, hybrid beads, which are made by mixing persimmon leaf and chitosan, was used to remove Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution. According to the Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) analysis, the hybrid bead has a structure that enables the easy adsorption of heavy metals because it has carboxylic, carbonyl groups, O-H carboxylic acid, and bonded -OH groups. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by hybrid beads was more suitable with the Langmuir isothermal adsorption and showed an ion exchange reaction which occurred in the uneven adsorption surface layer. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cd(II) was determined to be 278.68 mg/g and 87.91 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption removal process of Pb(II) and Cd(II) using hybrid beads is a spontaneous exothermic reaction and the affinity of the adsorbed material for the adsorbent is excellent. Hybrid beads are inexpensive, have a high removal efficiency of heavy metals, and are environmentally friendly.

Hybrid functionalized chitosan-Al2O3@SiO2 composite for enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption

In this study, we prepared a novel hybrid functionalized chitosan-Al₂O₃@SiO₂ composite (FCAS) for removing hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous system. Spectroscopic studies like Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS) were characterized. The effects such as dosage of adsorbent, pH, contact time and initial Cr(VI) concentration were evaluated. It has been illustrated that a wide acidic condition in the pH range of 2-6 was conducive to Cr(VI) adsorption and only 10 min was required to reach about 80% adsorption. Also, the adsorption properties of prepared adsorbent such as kinetics, thermodynamics and isotherms were comprehensively studied. Additionally, the adsorption capacity barely declined even after five cycles. Studies found that FCAS with characteristics of high performance of adsorption rate and capacity and better reusability would be a potential adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Biogenic Calcium Carbonate with Hierarchical Organic-Inorganic Composite Structure Enhancing the Removal of Pb(II) from Wastewater

Calcium carbonate from geological sources (geo-CaCO₃, e.g., calcite, aragonite) is used extensively in removing heavy metals from wastewater through replacement reaction. However, geo-CaCO₃ has an intrinsically compact crystalline structure that results in low efficiency in pollutant removal and thus its use may produce enormous sludge. In this work, biogenic calcium carbonate (bio-CaCO₃) derived from oyster shells was used to remove Pb(II) from wastewater and found to significantly outperform geo-CaCO₃ (calcite). The thermodynamics study revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of bio-CaCO₃ for Pb(II) was three times that of geo-CaCO₃, reaching up to 1667 mg/g. The kinetics study disclosed that the dissolution kinetics and the rate of intraparticle diffusion of bio-CaCO₃ were faster than those of geo-CaCO₃. Extensive mechanism research through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N₂ adsorption/desorption test and mercury intrusion porosimetry showed that the hierarchical porous organic-inorganic hybrid structure of bio-CaCO₃ expedited the dissolution of CaCO₃ to provide abundant CO₃^2- active sites and facilitated the permeation and diffusion of Pb(II) into the bulk solid phases. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and the examination of Pb(II) removal ability of bio-CaCO₃ after calcination indicated that the organic functional groups of bio-CaCO₃ also facilitated the immobilization of Pb(II) into CaCO₃ particles, although the major contribution was from the hierarchical porous structure of bio-CaCO₃.

Effect of solution plasma process with bubbling gas on physicochemical properties of chitosan

In the present work, solution plasma process (SPP) with bubbling gas was used to prepare oligochitosan. The effect of SPP irradiation with bubbling gas on the degradation of chitosan was evaluated by the intrinsic viscosity reduction rate and the degradation kinetic. The formation of OH radical was studied. Changes of the physicochemical properties of chitosan were measured by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as ultraviolet-visible, Fourier-transform infrared, and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results indicated an obvious decrease in the intrinsic viscosity reduction rate after SPP irradiation with bubbling gas, and that the rate with bubbling was higher than that without. The main chemical structure of chitosan remained intact after irradiation, but changes in the morphology, crystallinity, and thermal stability of oligochitosan were observed. In particular, the crystallinity and thermal stability tended to decrease. The present study indicated that SPP can be effectively used for the degradation of chitosan.

Chitooligosaccharide and its derivatives: preparation and biological applications

Chitin is a natural polysaccharide of major importance. This biopolymer is synthesized by an enormous number of living organisms; considering the amount of chitin produced annually in the world, it is the most abundant polymer after cellulose. The most important derivative of chitin is chitosan, obtained by partial deacetylation of chitin under alkaline conditions or by enzymatic hydrolysis. Chitin and chitosan are known to have important functional activities but poor solubility makes them difficult to use in food and biomedicinal applications. Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are the degraded products of chitosan or chitin prepared by enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis of chitosan. The greater solubility and low viscosity of COS have attracted the interest of many researchers to utilize COS and their derivatives for various biomedical applications. In light of the recent interest in the biomedical applications of chitin, chitosan, and their derivatives, this review focuses on the preparation and biological activities of chitin, chitosan, COS, and their derivatives.

Adsorption of Cd (II), Cu (II), and Zn (II) from Aqueous Solution onto Nitrogen-FunctionalizedDesmostachya bipinnata

A very simple means of nitrogen functional group grafting onto the backbone ofDesmostachya bipinnatais investigated, which is a sacrificial herb in the south Asian region particular to Hindu religion. This natural biomaterial is found to be very effective for metal binding, after treatment with hydrazine monohydrate. The present study explores a comparison of amination processes by considering several options. The maximum metal loading capacities for Cd, Cu, and Zn were found to be 76.80 mg/g, 72.10 mg/g, and 58.16 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic evaluation indicated that the adsorption of Cd, Cu, and Zn onto the biomaterials followed the pseudo second-order rate equation.

Competitive adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) onto xanthate-modified magnetic chitosan

The competitive adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) onto a novel xanthate-modified magnetic chitosan (XMCS) was systematically investigated in single and ternary metal systems. In single system, equilibrium studies showed that the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) followed the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 76.9, 34.5 and 20.8mg/g, respectively. In ternary system, the combined action of the metals was found to be antagonistic and the metal sorption followed the order of Pb(II)>Cu(II)>Zn(II); the Langmuir isotherm fitted the data of Pb(II) and Cu(II) well while the isotherm data of Zn(II) correlated well with the Freundlich model. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) studies showed that the thiol and amino group participated in the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II).

Modeling and evaluation on removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous systems using fixed bed column

Removal of hexavalent chromium by xanthated chitosan was investigated in a packed bed up-flow column. The experiments were conducted to study the effect of important design parameters such as bed height and flow rate. At a bed height of 20 cm and flow rate of 5 mL min(-1), the metal-uptake capacity of xanthated chitosan and plain chitosan flakes for hexavalent chromium was found to be 202.5 and 130.12 mg g(-1) respectively. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was used to analyze the experimental data. The computed sorption capacity per unit bed volume (N(0)) was 4.6 ± 0.3 and 78.3 ± 2.9 g L(-1) for plain and xanthated flakes respectively at 10% breakthrough concentration. The rate constant (K(a)) was recorded as 0.0507 and 0.0194 L mg(-1)h(-1) for plain and xanthated chitosan respectively. In flow rate experiments, the results confirmed that the metal uptake capacity and the metal removal efficiency of plain and xanthated chitosan decreased with increasing flow rate. The Thomas model was used to fit the column sorption data at different flow rates and model constants were evaluated. The column was successfully applied for the removal of hexavalent chromium from electroplating wastewater. Five hundred bed volumes of electroplating wastewater were treated in column experiments using this adsorbent, reducing the concentrations of hexavalent chromium from 10 mg L(-1) to 0.1 mg L(-1).

Adsorption behavior of mercury on functionalized aspergillus versicolor mycelia: atomic force microscopic study

The adsorption characteristics of mercury on Aspergillus versicolor mycelia have been studied under varied environments. The mycelia are functionalized by carbon disulfide (CS(2)) treatment under alkaline conditions to examine the enhance uptake capacity and explore its potentiality in pollution control management. The functionalized A. versicolor mycelia have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDXA), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) probing. SEM and AFM images exhibit the formation of nanoparticles on the mycelial surface. ATR-IR profile confirms the functionalization of the mycelia following chemical treatment. ATR-IR and EDXA results demonstrate the binding of the sulfur groups of the functionalized mycelia to the mercury and consequent formation metal sulfide. AFM study reveals that the mycelial surface is covered by a layer of densely packed domain like structures. Sectional analysis yields significant increase in average roughness (R(rms)) value (20.5 +/- 1.82 nm) compared to that of the pristine mycelia (4.56 +/- 0.82 nm). Surface rigidity (0.88 +/- 0.06 N/m) and elasticity (92.6 +/- 10.2 MPa) obtained from a force distance curve using finite element modeling are found to increase significantly with respect to the corresponding values of (0.65 +/- 0.05 N/m and 32.8 +/- 4.5 MPa) of the nonfunctionalized mycelia. The maximum mercury adsorption capacity of the functionalized mycelia is observed to be 256.5 mg/g in comparison to 80.71 mg/g for the pristine mycelia.
