Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicines are tremendous sources of polysaccharides, which are of great interest in the human welfare system as natural medicines, food, and cosmetics. This review aims to highlight the recent trends in extraction (conventional and non-conventional), purification and analytic techniques of traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharides (TCMPs), and the chemical structure, biological activities (anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, intestinal flora regulation, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, and other activities), and the underlying mechanisms of polysaccharides extracted from 76 diverse traditional Chinese medicines were compared and discussed. With this wide coverage, a total of 164 scientific articles were searched from the database including Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and China Knowledge Network. This comprehensive survey from previous reports indicates that TCMPs are non-toxic, highly biocompatible, and good biodegradability. Besides, this review highlights that TCMPs may be excellent functional factors and effective therapeutic drugs. Finally, the current problems and future research advances of TCMPs are also introduced. New valuable insights for the future researches regarding TCMPs are also proposed in the fields of therapeutic agents and functional foods.

Abstract
In this research, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions of the water-soluble polysaccharide (FCPS) from Ficus carica fruits were optimized using the response surface methodology. The optimal FCPS yield was 7.97 % achieved by conducting ultrasound-assisted extraction four times at a solid-liquid ratio of 1:20 (g/mL) and an ultrasound temperature of 70 °C. Then, the structure, antioxidant properties, hypoglycemic effects, and immunomodulatory activities of FCPS were evaluated. FCPS was characterized as irregular, rough-surfaced, flaky materials consisting of pyran-type polysaccharides with α- and β-glycosidic linkages, and composed of multiple monosaccharides and only one homogeneous concentrated polysaccharide component (FCPS1) with a molecular weight of 4.224 × 104 Da. The results suggested FCPS exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity in vitro, as evidenced by improved cell viability and reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Meanwhile, FCPS effectively improved liver-related insulin resistance by promoting glucose consumption in hepatocytes and activated the immune response through activation of murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) and upregulation of interleukin 6 (IL6) and interleukin 12 (IL-12) expression. The findings demonstrate the efficacy of the UAE technique in isolating FCPS with biological functionality and FCPS could potentially serve as a beneficial organic antioxidant source and functional food, carrying important implications for future studies.

Abstract
With the ever-increasing scope of organocuprates, a well-established Gilman reagent has been considered as an unprecedented synthetic tool in modern organic chemistry. The broad research profile of the Gilman reagent (R2CuLi in THF or Et2O) is owing to its propensity to carry out three kinds of reactions, i.e., epoxide ring opening reactions, 1,4-conjugate addition reactions, and SN2 reactions in a regioselective manner. This review examines the applications of Gilman reagent in the total synthesis of both abundant and scarce natural products of remarkable synthetic pharmaceutical profile reported since 2011. The presented insights will be of a vital roadmap to general organic synthesis and it will contribute to the development of new natural products and their analogues in future drug discovery.

Abstract
To obtain the optimal process for the enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction of polysaccharides from Acanthopanax senticosus, and study the physicochemical properties of polysaccharides of different molecular weights, the extraction of Acanthopanax polysaccharides was optimized using the BBD response surface test. The polysaccharides with different molecular weights were obtained by ethanol-graded precipitation at 40%, 60%, and 80%, which were presented as ASPS40, ASPS60, and ASPS80. The polysaccharides were analyzed by HPGPC, ion chromatography, FT-IR, UV, SEM, TGA, XRD, Congo red, and I2-KI tests. The antioxidant assay was used to evaluate their antioxidant properties in vitro. The findings demonstrated that the recovery rate of Acanthopanax polysaccharide was 10.53 ± 0.682%, which is about 2.5 times greater compared to the conventional method of hot water extraction. Based on FT-IR, TGA, polysaccharides with different molecular weights did not differ in their structure or thermal stability. The XRD suggests that the internal structure of ASPSs is amorphous. Congo red and I2-KI showed that all three polysaccharides had triple helix structures with longer branched chains and more side chains. Furthermore, the antioxidant results showed the antioxidant activity of polysaccharides is not only related to the molecular weight size but also can be related to its composition and structure. These studies developed a green, and scalable method to produce polysaccharides from Acanthopanax senticosus and evaluated the properties of Acanthopanax polysaccharides of different molecular weights.

Abstract
Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi is an important resource with dual functions in medicine and food since ancient times. Polysaccharides are the main bioactive component of P. lobata and have various bioactivities, such as antidiabetic, antioxidant, immunological activities, etc. Due to the distinctive bioactivity of P. lobata polysaccharides (PLPs), the research on PLPs is booming. Although a series of PLPs have been isolated and characterized, the chemical structure and mechanism are unclear and need further study. Here, we reviewed recent progress in isolation, identification, pharmacological properties, and possible therapeutic mechanisms of PLPs to update awareness of these value-added natural polysaccharides. Besides, the structure-activity relationships, application status, and toxic effects of PLPs are highlighted and discussed to afford a deeper understanding of PLPs. This article may provide theoretical insights and technical guidance for developing PLPs as novel functional foods.

Ultrasound-Assisted Enzymatic Extraction and Bioactivity Analysis of Polypeptides from Cordyceps militaris. J CHEM-NY 2023. Abstract
Cordyceps militaris is rich in protein, polysaccharide, cordycepin, and other active components, with anticancer and antioxidation functions. In order to improve the economic value of C. militaris, the protein was extracted from its fruiting body by alkali-soluble acid precipitation process, and the extraction technology was optimized by orthogonal test. The polypeptide was obtained by digesting those proteins with a complex enzyme. And the antimicrobial and anticancer activities of those polypeptides were evaluated by measuring inhibitory zone and cytotoxicity. The results showed that the optimal extraction conditions of protein were as follows: pH of 8.5, material-to-water ratio of 1 : 28, extraction time of 3.5 h, extraction three times, and the highest protein yield was 45.06%. The optimum enzymatic hydrolysis process of C. militaris polypeptide solution was as follows: the ratio of alkaline protease to papain was 4 : 3, the optimum temperature was 55°C, pH was 7.2, the enzyme dosage was 7000 U/mL, the enzymolysis time was 3.5 h, and the highest yield of peptide was 16.73%. Under those conditions, the polypeptides prepared from C. militaris (<3000 Da) showed good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus, with inhibitory zones of (12.08 ± 0.22), (6.67 ± 0.12), and (10.32 ± 0.23) mm, respectively. The results showed that the SAO-S (IC50 = 0.49 mg/L) and T24 (IC50 = 0.23 mg/L) were significantly inhibited by C. militaris polypeptide. Results from this study suggest that polypeptides can be utilized as a new approach for bioactive compounds production from C. militaris.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are not only the main components in the cell walls of plants and fungi, but also a structure that supports and protects cells. In the process of obtaining polysaccharides from raw materials containing cell walls, the polysaccharides on the cell walls are the products and also a factor that affects the extraction rate. Polysaccharides derived from plants and fungi have mild characteristics and exhibit various biological activities. The biological activity of polysaccharides is related to their chemical structure. This review summarizes the effects of the physicochemical properties and structure of polysaccharides, from cell walls in raw materials, that have an impact on their biological activities, including molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, chain structure, and uronic acid content. Also, the structure of certain natural polysaccharides limits their biological activity. Chemical modification and degradation of these structures can enhance the pharmacological properties of natural polysaccharides to a certain extent. At the same time, the processing method affects the structure and yield of polysaccharides on the cell wall and in the cell. The extraction and purification methods are summarized, and the effects of preparation methods on the structure and physiological effects of polysaccharides from plants and fungi are discussed.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) are a new food resource, rich in functional factors. MOL polysaccharides are important active macromolecules within MOL. However, there are problems, such as low extraction rates and lack of evidence for functional activity. Therefore, in this experiment, single-factor experiments were carried out using MOL powder as the raw material, and the Plackett-Burman test was used to screen the significantly influential test factors. The extraction process of MOL polysaccharide was optimized by response surface methodology. The insulin resistance alleviating activity of MOLP polysaccharides was initially explored. The results showed that the extraction of Moringa oleifera leaves crude polysaccharides (MOLP) by ultrasonic assisted cellulase enzymatic digestion was (17.03 ± 1.03)%, and the obtained MOLP was a crude polysaccharide with an average molecular weight (Mw) of 279.48 kDa, consisting of fucose, rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid. MOLP had an IC50 value of 8.02 mg/mL for α-glucosidase and scavenging activity against free radicals such as ABTS, DPPH, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide anion with an IC50 value of 0.21 mg/mL 0.31 mg/mL 0.97 mg/mL 0.49 mg/mL. At the same time, MOLP significantly enhanced the glucose consumption, glycogen synthesis, CAT, SOD, GSH-Px activity, and reduced the MDA and ROS content in high glucose-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 (IR-HepG2) cells. This experiment improved the extraction rate of MOLP and demonstrated that MOLP has antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, which can alleviate the insulin resistance of high glucose-induced HepG2 cells. It provides partial data support for the possible hypoglycemic effect of MOLP by alleviating oxidative stress, and also provides new ideas for the in-depth study of basic research and industrial application of MOLP.

Abstract
Resveratrol (3,4,5-trihydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring polyphenolic stilbene compound produced by certain plant species in response to biotic and abiotic factors. Resveratrol has sparked a lot of interest due to its unique structure and approved therapeutic properties for the prevention and treatment of many diseases such as neurological disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammation, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Over the last few decades, many studies have focused on the production of resveratrol from various natural sources and the optimization of large-scale production. Endophytic fungi isolated from various types of grapevines and Polygonum cuspidatum, the primary plant sources of resveratrol, demonstrated intriguing resveratrol-producing ability. Due to the increasing demand for resveratrol, one active area of research is the use of endophytic fungi and metabolic engineering techniques for resveratrol's large-scale production. The current review addresses an overview of endophytic fungi as a source for production, as well as biosynthesis pathways and relevant genes incorporated in resveratrol biosynthesis. Various approaches for optimizing resveratrol production from endophytic fungi, as well as their bio-transformation and bio-degradation, are explained in detail.

Abstract
A variety of extraction methods of polysaccharides from fungi are reviewed and compared. Purification methods, structure of fungal polysaccharides were reviewed. Diverse biological activities of fungal polysaccharides were outlined. Structure-activity relationships of fungal polysaccharides were discussed.
Fungi, as the unique natural resource, are rich in polysaccharides, proteins, fats, vitamins, and other components. Therefore, they have good medical and nutritional values. Polysaccharides are considered one of the most important bioactive components in fungi. Increasing researches have confirmed that fungal polysaccharides have various biological activities, such as antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, hepatoprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and radioprotective activities. Consequently, the research progresses and future prospects of fungal polysaccharides must be systematically reviewed to promote their better understanding. This paper reviewed the extraction, purification, structure, biological activity, and underlying molecular mechanisms of fungal polysaccharides. Moreover, the structure–activity relationships of fungal polysaccharides were emphasized and discussed. This review can provide scientific basis for the research and industrial utilization of fungal polysaccharides.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are a major functional component of seaweeds with various biological activities. Porphyra haitanensis is usually harvested in different growth periods, but how the harvest periods influence the Porphyra haitanensis polysaccharide (PHP) activity is unclear. This work aimed to evaluate the anti-allergic activity of PHP from different harvest periods and investigate the potential structure-activity relationship. The water-soluble polysaccharide of P. haitanensis from three different harvest periods was purified and administered to an ovalbumin-sensitized food allergy mouse model. Results showed that PHPs significantly alleviated the allergic symptoms and reduced the production of histamine and allergen-specific IgE. Further experiments elucidated that PHPs suppressed the allergic activity of intestinal epithelial cells, dendritic cells, and Th2 cells and downregulated the proportion of Th2 cells. Noticeably, the molecular weight and sulfate content gradually decreased as the harvest period was delayed; simultaneously, the anti-allergic activity gradually increased, implying a relationship between the harvest period, structure, and anti-allergic activity of PHPs. This work elucidated the anti-allergic activity of PHPs from different harvest periods, facilitated the deep-processing and efficient application of Porphyra haitanensis, and shed light on the development of novel anti-allergic functional foods.

Abstract
Sagittaria trifolia tuber is an aquatic vegetable. In this work, microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction (MEE) was used to extract S. trifolia tuber polysaccharides (STTPs). Optimum conditions were complex enzyme of 2 %, liquid-to-solid ratio of 43 : 1 mL g-1 , microwave power of 506 W, and time of 8 min, under which STTPs yield was 36.22±0.69 %, higher than those of other methods. STTPs were sulfated polysaccharides with sulfur valence of S6+ . STTPs comprised mannose, glucose, galactose, and arabinose at a mole ratio of 3.69 : 19.33 : 6.21 : 1.00, molecular weights of 3606 kDa and 149.6 kDa, particle size of 220 nm, and zeta potential of -5.02 mV. The surface of STTPs was full of bumps and holes, and abundant in O1s and non-functionalized C1s. STTPs would scavenge reactive oxygen species with advantage. It would provide an efficient MEE method to obtain antioxidant STTPs, also a clue for extracting polysaccharides from starch-rich crops.

Abstract
Enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) involves the use of hydrolytic enzymes for the degradation of the cell wall or other cell components. This supports the diffusion of the solvent into the plant or fungal material, leading to easier elution of its metabolites. This technique has been gaining increasing attention, as it is considered an eco-friendly and cost-effective improvement on classical or modern extraction methods. Its promising application in improving the recovery of different classes of bioactive metabolites (e.g., polyphenols, carotenoids, polysaccharides, proteins, components of essential oil, and terpenes) has been reported by many scientific papers. This review summarises information on the theoretical aspects of EAE (e.g., the components of the cell walls and the types of enzymes used) and the most recent discoveries in the effective involvement of enzyme-assisted extraction of natural products (plants, mushrooms, and animals) for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
In this study, after optimizing the extraction process of CPP (Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides), CPPM (CPP microcapsules) were prepared. Subsequently, the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties were studied. The results showed that CPPM is a hollow sac-like structure with rough folds and protuberances and comes in spherical or ellipsoidal shapes with uniform particle size. CPPM has certain swelling degree, low hardness, good adhesion, and stability. Then, the effect of CPPM on wounds repair was investigated by a rat model. The results showed that CPPM could improve the wound healing rate. Histological evaluation showed CPPM could promote neovascularization and fibroblast proliferation. By investigating the healing mechanism, it was found that CPPM increased the hydroxyproline content in granulation tissue and had an excellent antioxidant ability, and then inhibited lipid peroxidation, in addition, it significantly increased the transcript levels of VEGF and miRNA-21 genes, indicating that CPPM play an influential role in vascular remodeling during wound healing by up-regulating the expression of VEGF and miRNA-21 genes.

Abstract
The structural and functional properties of Citrus grandis Osbeck (CGO) seed mucilage by different extraction practices, including conventional citrate buffer, ultrasonic-assisted (UAE), enzymatic-assisted extraction (EAE) with cellulase or Celluclast® 1.5 L and various ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) procedures were investigated. It was found that CGO seed from agricultural and processing byproducts is an excellent new source of high methoxyl pectin with quite high intrinsic viscosity (about 108.64 dL/g) and molecular weight (about 1.9 × 106) as compared with other pectin sources. UAEE with Celluclast® 1.5 L enhanced the extraction yield most pronouncedly (about 2.3 times). Moreover, the monosaccharide composition of CGO seed mucilage is least affected by EAE with Celluclast® 1.5 L. In contrast, EAE with cellulase dramatically reduces the galacturonic acid (GalA) content to less than 60 molar%, and increases the glucose (Glc) content pronouncedly (to about 40 molar%), which may be considered as an adverse effect in terms of pectin purity. Though extraction procedures involved with ultrasound and cellulolytic enzymes generally show a decrease in GalA contents, weight average molar mass and intrinsic viscosity, EAE with Celluclast® 1.5 L is least affected, followed by UAE and UAEE with Celluclast® 1.5 L. These features can be leveraged in favor of diversified applications.

Abstract
Tricholoma matsutake (TM) is a valuable edible mushroom that has attracted increasing attention due to its potential medicinal values and functional uses. However, the chemical composition and molecular mechanisms behinds TM are not specifically summarized yet. Hence, this review aims to systematically analyze the research progress on the characterization of chemical compositions and the reported health effects of TM in the last 20 years. The myochemical profiles of TM consist of proteins with amino acids, fatty acids, nucleic acids with their derivatives, polysaccharides, minerals, volatile components, phenolic compounds, and steroids. The bioactive substances in TM exert their health effects mainly by regulating body immunity and restoring the balance of the redox system. NF-κB signaling pathway and its downstream cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 are the key molecular mechanisms. In addition, MAPK, PI3K-Akt, and JAK-STAT are also involved. NF-κB, MAPK, and PI3K-Akt are also highly related to cancer regulation and thus TM has great anticancer potential. Considering that most studies have only investigated the dosage and inhibition rate of TM on cancer cell lines, more extensive studies need to focus on the specific molecular mechanisms behind these anticancer effects in the future.

Abstract
Finger citron pomace is a cheap and renewable by-product of the citrus processing industry, representing up to 60% of the fruit biomass. In this study, a pectinase-based and ultrasonic-assisted method was firstly used to extract pectic oligosaccharides (POS) from finger citron pomace. Using the orthogonal experiment design (OED), the maximum conversion rate of up to 64.5% from pomace to POS was obtained under the extraction conditions of 0.25 mg mL-1 pectinase and 50 mg mL-1 pectin at 45 °C and pH 4.5 for 2 h. The extracted POS was then fractionated and purified to homogeneous oligosaccharides (FCPOS-1) with a molecular weight of 2.15 kDa, and the analyses of monosaccharide composition, FTIR, NMR and ESI-MS indicated that FCPOS-1 consisted of GalA and a small amount of mannose, galactose and arabinose. Multiple antioxidant activity assays in vitro revealed that FCPOS-1 possessed remarkable antioxidant properties, especially scavenging activity against DPPH radicals up to 94.07%. FCPOS-1 has the potential to be an effective natural antioxidant for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Flavonoids are one of the important active ingredients from Acanthopanax senticosus, with a variety of biological functions, such as antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The aim of this work was to investigate enzyme-assisted ultrasonic extraction of A. senticosus flavonoids and their enrichment and antioxidant properties. We found that the optimal extraction process after Box–Behnken response surface optimization had the following parameters: a 3:2 ratio of cellulase to pectinase, enzyme mixture amount of 6960 U g−1, enzyme treatment time of 59.80 min; temperature of 53.70 °C, and pH value of 6.05. The yield of total flavonoids reached 36.95 ± 0.05 mg g−1. The results for different polar solvent enrichments showed that the highest flavonoid (61.0 ± 0.344 mg g−1), polyphenol (24.93 ± 0.234 mg g−1), and saponin (17.80 ± 0.586 mg g−1) contents were observed in the 1-butanol fraction, and the highest polysaccharide content (20.04 ± 0.783 mg g−1) was in the water fraction. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the antioxidant potential of the extract was related to the higher amount of flavonoids and phenolics in the extract. We thus found an effective A. senticosus flavonoid extraction and enrichment procedure, which can serve as a reference method.

Abstract
The structure, antioxidant activity and hypoglycemic activity in vitro of a novel homogeneous polysaccharide from Tricholoma matsutake (Tmp) were investigated. Structural features suggested that Tmp was consisted of arabinose (Ara), mannose (Man), glucose (Glc) and galactose (Gal) with a molar ratio of 1.9:13.6:42.7:28.3, respectively, with a molecular weight of 72.14 kDa. The structural chain of Tmp was confirmed to contain →2,5)-α-l-Arabinofuranose (Araf)-(1→, →3,5)-α-l-Araf-(1→, β-d-Glucopyranose (Glcp)-(1→, α-d-Mannopyranose (Manp)-(1→, α-d-Galacopyranose (Galp)-(1→, →4)-β-d-Galp-(1→, →3)-β-d-Glcp-(1→, →3)-α-d-Manp-(1→, →6)-3-O-Methyl (Me)-α-d-Manp-(1→, →6)-α-d-Galp-(1→, →3,6)-β-d-Glcp-(1→, →6)-α-d-Manp-(1→ residues. Furthermore, Tmp possessed strong antioxidant activity and showed the strong inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities. Then, a further evaluation found that there was a dramatic improvement in the glucose consumption, glycogen synthesis and the activities of pyruvate kinase and hexokinase when the insulin-resistant-human hepatoma cell line (IR-HepG2) was treated with Tmp. The above results indicated that Tmp had good hypoglycemic activity and also exhibited great potentials in in terms of dealing with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
In this study, the extraction conditions extracted maximize amounts of phenolic and bioactive compounds from the fruit extract of Ficus auriculata by using optimized response surface methodology. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated through the assay of radical scavenging ability on DPPH and ABTS as well as reducing power assays on total phenolic content (TPC). For the extraction purpose, the ultrasonic assisted extraction technique was employed. A second-order polynomial model satisfactorily fitted to the experimental findings concerning antioxidant activity (R2 = 0.968, P < 0.0001) and total phenolic content (R2 = 0.961, P < 0.0001), indicating a significant correlation between the experimental and expected value. The highest DPPH radical scavenging activity was achieved 85.20 ± 0.96% at the optimum extraction parameters of 52.5% ethanol (v/v), 40.0 °C temperature, and 22 min extraction time. Alternatively, the highest yield of total phenolic content was found 31.65 ± 0.94 mg GAE/g DF at the optimum extraction conditions. From the LC-ESI-MS profiling of the optimized extract, 18 bioactive compounds were tentatively identified, which may regulate the antioxidant activity of fruits of F. auriculata.

Abstract
Lipid nanoparticles based on multiple emulsion (W/O/W) systems are suitable for incorporating hydrophilic active substances, including iridoid glycosides. This study involved optimization of composition of lipid nanoparticles, incorporation of active compounds (aucubin and catalpol), evaluation of stability of the resulting nanocarriers, and characterization of their lipid matrix. Based on 32 factorial design, an optimized dispersion of lipid nanoparticles (solid lipid:surfactant-4.5:1.0 wt.%) was developed, predisposed for the incorporation of iridoid glycosides by emulsification-sonication method. The encapsulation efficiency of the active substances was determined at nearly 90% (aucubin) and 77% (catalpol). Regarding the stability study, room temperature was found to be the most suitable for maintaining the expected physicochemical parameter values (particle size < 100 nm; polydispersity index < 0.3; zeta potential > |± 30 mV|). Characterization of the lipid matrix confirmed the nanometer size range of the resulting carriers (below 100 nm), as well as the presence of the lipid in the stable β' form.

Abstract
Jujube peel (JP) is rich in pigments, which appears red to deep red in color. This study optimized conditions for cocktail enzyme-assisted extraction of jujube peel pigments based on response surface method (RSM). A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was utilized to analyze the effects of buffer liquid volume (BLV), pH, temperature, and incubation time on the total polyphenols content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC) and color (L*, a*, b*). Optimal extraction conditions, for the highest concentrations of TPC, TFC and a* values, were 16 mL BLV, pH 7.0, temperature 43 °C, and incubation time 97 min. Finally, concentrations and identities of the eight main constituents (p-coumaric acid, (-)-epicatechin, quercetin-3-O-robinobioside, rutin, kaempferol 3-O-robinobioside, quercetin 3-O-α-l-arabinosyl-(1 → 2)-α-l-rhamnoside, quercetin 3-O-β-d-xylosyl-(1 → 2)-α-l-rhamnoside, quercetin) in jujube peel pigments were determined using UPLC-MS/MS. The study provides guidance for valorisation of jujube peel, specifically valuable food-safe pigments, during industrial production.

Abstract
Porphyra is one of the most economically important red algae in the world. The functional components extracted from Porphyra such as porphyrans, proteins, lipids, and minerals have strong physiological activities. Porphyran, a sulfated galactan, is composed of alternating 1,4-linked α-l-galactopyranose-6-sulfate (L6S) and 1,3-linked β-d-galactopyranose (G). Porphyran and oligo-porphyran have a series of pharmacological and biological functions, such as antioxidation, anticancer, antiaging, antiallergic, immunomodulatory, hypoglycaemic, and hypolipidemic effects. Thus, red algae Porphyra-derived porphyran and oligo-porphyran have various potential applications in food, medicine, and cosmetic fields. For better application, this review introduces and summarizes the structure and source of porphyran as well as the preparation methods, biological activities, and potential applications of porphyran and oligo-porphyran. Moreover, the future research directions and emphasis of porphyran and oligo-porphyran preparation as well as their functional activities and applications are highlighted and prospected.

Abstract
Poria cocos mushroom is widely used as a food and an herb in East Asian and other countries due to its high nutritional value. Research has demonstrated that Poria cocos polysaccharides (PCP) are the major bioactives and possess antioxidation, anti-inflammation, immunoregulation, and other health promoting properties. However, the efficient preparation of PCP has been a challenge, particularly in large scale for industry. Herein, we investigated the biotransformation of PCP from Poria cocos, catalyzed by β-glucanase from Aspergillus niger and focused on optimizing the most four influencing parameters: Temperature, time, pH, and enzyme dosage in this study. After numerous optimizations with the assistance of response surface optimization methodology, we have established that the optimal conditions for the biotransformation PCP preparation were as following: Enzymolysis temperature 60 °C, time 120 min, pH 5.0 and enzyme dose 20 mL. Under these conditions, the extraction yield of PCP reached as high as 12.8%. In addition, the antioxidant activities of PCP were evaluated by reducing power assay and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl, superoxide anion, and hydroxyl radicals scavenging assays. Resulting data showed that PCP presented outstanding antioxidant capacity. Thus, these findings indicate that PCP could be produced as a natural antioxidant for further development.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the production of sugars from ginseng residues treated with laccase. Laccase was used to degrade lignin from ginseng residues in order to increase the yield of sugars. Reaction conditions, including solid loading, pH, enzyme concentration, incubation temperature, and incubation time, were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the optimum conditions were 20% of solid loading (w/v), pH 7, 300 IU/ml, temperature of 40 °C and incubation time of 6 h. The minimum residual lignin obtained was 59.89%. The results also showed that 56.58% sugars including 12.04% water soluble polysaccharides (WSP), 16.24% water insoluble polysaccharides (WIP) and 5.08% reducing sugar were afforded from delignify substance. Chemical characters of these sugars were analyzed. Pretreat of laccase delignification for sugars production is expected to be applied to other herbal residues.

Abstract
BACKGROUD The Lanzhou lily (Lilium davidii var. unicolor) is the only Lilium species that is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes in China. Its bulbs contain various bioactive substances, such as polysaccharides, saponins and colchicine. Lanzhou lily polysaccharides are known to have anti-immunity, anti-tumor and anti-oxidation functions. RESULTS The present study used a Box-Behnken design to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of Lanzhou lily polysaccharides. Compared to other enzymes, trypsin significantly increased the polysaccharide yields, whereas the protein content of polysaccharides extracted with trypsin was the lowest. Monosaccharide mainly includes glucose (> 50%) and mannose (> 10%). 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, chelating activity, total antioxidant capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of Lanzhou lily polysaccharides extracted with trypsin were stronger than those extracted without enzymes (control). Structural characteristics of Lanzhou lily polysaccharides extracted with trypsin and extracted without enzymes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. When water extracted polysaccharide and trypsin extracted polysaccharide concentrations were 200 μg mL-1 , Raw264.7 proliferation rates were 101.69% and 159.41%, respectively. CONCLUSION The Lanzhou lily polysaccharide was identified as α-(1 → 6)-d-glucan. Consequently, the effects of both potential antioxidant and proliferative activity of trypsin are significant. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Bakery products made by cereal and edible fungi powder have a unique flavor and health benefits, dramatically enhancing the nutritional value of the products. In this study, we investigated the antifatigue effect of a novel Tricholoma matsutake cookie (TMC) by the exhaustive swimming test. Male Kunming ICR mice were randomly divided into seven groups (each group, n = 10), fed with saline, ordinary cookies (4, 8, 16 g/kg B.W./day), and TMC (4, 8, 16 g/kg B.W./day) by gavage. After 30-day administration, the weight-loaded swimming test was carried out on the mice to evaluate the antifatigue effect of TMC. In comparison with the effect of ordinary cookies, the intake of TMC significantly prolonged the exhaustive swimming time of mice and increased the level of muscle glycogen and liver glycogen, accompanied by the reduction of lactic acid and urea nitrogen level in serum. Additionally, TMC dramatically improved the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in serum and largely decreased the level of malondialdehyde. All in all, TMC could enforce exhaustive swimming tolerance, accelerate the decomposition of sports-related metabolites such as lactic acid and urea nitrogen, and increase the activity of the antioxidant enzyme, thereby improving sports-related energy storage and relieving fatigue. Our findings broadened the application of T. matsutake in the processing of bakery products and provided the theoretical basis and technical support for the development of antifatigue products. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this study, we investigated the antifatigue effect of a novel Tricholoma matsutake cookie by the exhaustive swimming test. Collectively, the results of the present study suggested that the cookies fortified with T. matsutake could be considered as an antifatigue bakery product. Furthermore, our findings broadened the application of T. matsutake in the processing of bakery products and provided the theoretical basis and technical support for the development of antifatigue products.

Abstract
In this study, a low-molecular-weight saccharide fragment (LMWAs-L) was prepared from alginate lyase (EC 4.2.2.3) hydrolyzed ascophyllan by ultra-filtration separation method. LMWAs-L was a homogeneous saccharide fraction with an average molecular weight of 6.96 kDa. Enzymolysis process optimization experiments revealed that the optimum process parameters for preparing LMWAs-L were the enzyme concentration 0.02 U/mL, initial pH 6.8, and enzymolysis temperature 43 °C. After optimization, the yield of LMWAs-L was increased to 9.74% higher than that without optimization. Interestingly, LMWAs-L exhibited stronger enhancing activities on the proliferation and migration of human skin fibroblasts cells in vitro and better antibacterial activities as compared to native ascophyllan at the same mass concentration. Our study establishes a simple way to prepare low-molecular-weight saccharide with beneficial bioactivities from ascophyllan efficiently. This is the first report to reveal that ascophyllan and its low-molecular-weight saccharide have the potentials to be developed as natural biological dressing and antibacterial agents.

Abstract
Vietnamese Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) has long been recognized as one of the most valuable traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, adenosine was extracted from Vietnamese C. militaris by ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction method (UAEE) using water as a solvent. Then, the effects of five single factors on adenosine content including pH, enzyme-to-material ratio, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were determined. After that, three factors consisting of ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were chosen based on their effects on adenosine content. The simultaneous influence of these factors on the adenosine content was investigated by response surface method using central composite design. The adenosine content was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography method. Under the optimal conditions, the extract was evaluated for antioxidant and anticancer bioactivities. In addition, different extraction methods including aqueous extraction (AE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) methods were carried out to compare with UAEE. As a result, it can be concluded that UAEE is a promising method for adenosine extraction and further studies regarding isolation and purification need to be conducted.

Abstract
The extraction kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of Glycyrrhiza polysaccharide (GP) were studied, and its rheological properties and antiviral activity were evaluated. The results showed that the extraction process could be fitted to Fick's second law of diffusion. The optimum concentration (97.62 mg mL-1) was obtained at a solid-liquid ratio of 1 : 15, (g mL-1), an extraction time of 120 min and an extraction temperature of 80 °C. The whole extraction process was spontaneous and endothermic. GP was shown to be an acid glycoprotein with a complex structure using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), circular dichroism (CD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). A study of its rheological properties showed that GP has the characteristics of a typical non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluid and that its viscosity could be significantly affected by temperature, pH and the presence of other ions. Branched and soft fiber structures with irregular molecular aggregation were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, GP showed good inhibitory activity against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) via the regulation of the relative expression levels of the IRF-1 and IRF-3 genes in MDBK cells. This activity was found to be dependent on the physicochemical and structural properties of GP. These findings imply that GP can be considered as a natural source of active material for the prevention of viral disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sweet corn cob (SCC), an agricultural by-product of the corn-processing industry, contains more than 80% insoluble bound ferulic acid (FA). Extraction of these bound phenolics can be achieved through chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis; however, the shift towards greener chemistry has raised awareness about the use of enzymatic hydrolysis. In the present study, the ability of ferulic acid esterase (FAE) and xylanase (XY) to catalyze the hydrolysis of FA from SCC was investigated. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a five-level, four-factor central composite rotatable design (CCRD), was used to establish the optimum conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of FA from SCC. Sweet corn cob was treated with a combination of FAE and XY at various concentrations (FAE: 0.00 to 0.04 U/g; XY: 0.00 to 18 093.5 U/g), temperatures (45 to 65 °C), and pH levels (pH 4.5 to 6.5). RESULTS The optimum extraction conditions predicted by the model were: FAE concentration of 0.02 U/g, XY concentration of 3475.3 U/g, extraction pH of 4.5, and an extraction temperature of 45 °C. CONCLUSION Under these conditions, the experimental yield of FA was 1.69 ± 0.02 g kg-1 of SCC, which is in agreement with the value predicted by the model. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Characterization, antioxidant, anti-pathogenic and infertility therapy effects of polysaccharides from Althaea officinalis (marshmallow) leaf (AOLPS) were investigated. AOLPS was fractionated using ion-exchange chromatography, affording fractions of AOLPS-1, AOLPS-2, AOLPS-3 and AOLPS-4. The fractions were mainly composed of d-galactopyranose (α-(1 → 4)-glycosidic bond) with the average molecular weight of 1220, 2240, 998 and 2670 Da, respectively which means it was a pectin-like polysaccharide. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques were employed to characterize the structure of purified polysaccharides. Compared with AOLPS-1, AOLPS-2 and AOLPS-4, AOLPS-3 had higher potential as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial. At the same time, the infertility therapy effects of four fractions of AOLPS were in the order AOLPS-3 > AOLPS-4 > AOLPS-1 > AOLPS-2. The experimental study provides strong evidence to exploit A. officinalis leaf in food and pharma manufacturing processes and presents new benefit of this plant in infertility therapy.

Abstract
The release of bioactive pigments could be potentially improved by enzyme degradation of plant cell wall polysaccharides. In this study, the objective was to evaluate enzyme type (cellulase and pectinase), pH values, hydrolysis temperature and time on the release of astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis). The results showed that pre-treated H. pluvialis with enzymes could improve the separation yield of astaxanthin. Pectinase release rate of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis was significantly higher than cellulase (p < 0.05), and enzyme hydrolysis time was also shorter. The stability study of astaxanthin oleoresin and microcapsule during storage at different temperature, oxygen and illumination was found that the degradation rate of astaxanthin rose with increasing temperature and illumination time, and the retention in oxygen environment decreased. The stability of astaxanthin microcapsules was better than astaxanthin oleoresin.

Abstract
In this paper, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) was employed in polysaccharides extraction from Lonicerae japonica leaves (LJLP). The optimal extraction conditions (extraction time of 33 min, PEG concentration of 30%, and ultrasonic power of 191 W) were obtained by Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under this condition, the LJLP yield was 14.76%. Furthermore, LJLP was identified as a typical heteropolysaccharide considering the main constitutive monosaccharides include galactose (32.3%), glucose (20.9%), and ribose (15.2%). Moreover, LJLP exhibited high total reducing power and considerable scavenging activities on superoxide radicals, in a concentration-dependent manner in vitro. In addition, antioxidant analysis in vivo revealed that for the LJLP-treated mice, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities, and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) were significantly increased, while the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased in both serum and liver.
