Abstract
Some composite materials have been prepared, constituted by a cyclodextrin-bis-urethane-based nanosponge matrix in which a reduced graphene oxide/silver nanoparticles photocatalyst has been dispersed. Different chain extenders were employed for designing the nanosponge supports, in such a way as to decorate their hyper-cross-linked structure with diverse functionalities. Moreover, two different strategies were explored to accomplish the silver loading. The obtained systems were successfully tested as catalysts for the photodegradation of emerging pollutants such as model dyes and drugs. Enhancement of the photoactive species performance (up to nine times), due to the synergistic local concentration effect exerted by the nanosponge, could be assessed. Overall, the best performances were shown by polyamine-decorated materials, which were able to promote the degradation of some particularly resistant drugs. Some methodological issues pertaining to data collection are also addressed.

Abstract
Many reported β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymers have poor flavonoid adsorption performance due to their low surface area and porosity resulting from the compact stack of the β-CD molecules crosslinked by flexible crosslinkers. Here, we propose a rigid crosslink strategy that uses phytic acid (PA) having rigid cyclic group as crosslinkers, achieving a high-surface-area (61.42-140.23 m2/g) and porous β-CD beads. The improved surface area and porosity are attributed to the rigid cyclic groups in PA, which expand the network structure of β-CD polymers. Benefitting from the advantages, the optimized PA-crosslinked β-CD (PA-β-CD) beads have an over tenfold increased adsorption amount and an threefold increased diffusivity for rutin compared with traditional non-porous β-CD beads crosslinked by epichlorohydrin. Moreover, dynamic adsorption experiments reveal that PA-β-CD beads are able to treat about 1100 mL of rutin solution (0.05 mg/mL), over 5 times higher than that of the non-porous β-CD beads (200 mL). These results demonstrate the promise of PA-β-CD beads for rapid and high-capacity adsorption of rutin.

Abstract
In this study, seven different materials were analyzed and includes coffee grounds (CG), two types of cellulose (CGC and CC), two types of modified cellulose (CT and CTCD), and cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (CD-1 and CD-2) were tested as adsorbents for the removal of dyes from the wastewater. The composition, morphology, and presence of functional groups in the obtained sorption materials were characterized by elemental analysis, SEM, TG/DTA, and FTIR spectroscopy. The sorption processes of the model contaminant, crystal violet (CV), were studied by kinetics and equilibrium models. The results showed, that using CTCD, the dye was adsorbed rapidly in 1 min and the slowest adsorption occurred in 20 min by CG. The time evolution was adjusted using a two-model, pseudo second-order model (CG and CGC) and pseudo first-order model in the rest adsorbents. According to the Langmuir and Sips isotherm models, the maximum adsorption capacities were very high in each case ranging from 1092.24 to 1220.40 mg g-1. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of the near-natural materials remained even higher after five regeneration cycles. The regeneration is almost waste-free and the materials used can be decomposed during composting. In addition, almost complete removal of cationic dyes was observed during the treatment of real wastewater samples.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin polymers (CDPs) are emerging adsorbents with demonstrated potential to remove perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from water. However, little is known about how the physicochemical properties of different types of CDPs determine PFAA adsorption on CDPs. In this study, we investigated the adsorption performance of 34 CDPs which consist of 14 different crosslinkers and exhibit a wide range of physicochemical properties. The performance metrics included adsorption kinetics, equilibrium adsorption density, and adsorption affinity for six PFAAs. We then used complementary bivariate and multivariate analyses to discover relationships between sixteen measurable physicochemical properties of the CDPs and their performance as adsorbents. We found that: (1) CDPs with a less negative or more positive surface charge will exhibit enhanced adsorption of all types of PFAAs; (2) CDPs with greater porosity and surface area will exhibit enhanced adsorption kinetics for all types of PFAAs; (3) CDPs with greater crosslinker content will exhibit enhanced adsorption of short-chain PFAAs; (4) CDPs containing more hydrophobic crosslinkers will exhibit enhanced equilibrium adsorption density and adsorption affinity for longer-chain PFAAs; and (5) CDPs with smaller particle sizes will exhibit enhanced adsorption kinetics and equilibrium adsorption density for all PFAAs. These insights will enable the further development of CDPs and other novel adsorbents to optimize their performance for removing PFAAs during water and wastewater treatment or groundwater remediation.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin nanosponge (β-CD-M) was used for the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU) from water and sewage. The obtained material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), Harkins and Jura t-Plot, zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and elementary analysis (EA). Batch adsorption experiments were employed to investigate the effects of the adsorbent dose, initial IBU concentration, contact time, electrolyte ions and humic acids, and sewage over adsorption efficiency. The experimental isotherms were show off using Langmuir, Freundlich, Hill, Halsey and Sips isotherm models and thermodynamic analysis. The fits of the results were estimated according to the Sips isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 86.21 mg g-1. The experimental kinetics were studied by pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, modified Freundlich, Weber Morris, Bangham's pore diffusion, and liquid film diffusion models. The performed experiments revealed that the adsorption process fits perfectly to the pseudo-second-order model. The Elovich and Freundlich models indicate chemisorption, and the kinetic adsorption model itself is complex. The data obtained throughout the study prove that this nanosponge (NS) is extremely stable, self-separating, and adjusting to the guest structure. It also represents a potential biodegradable adsorbent for the removal IBU from wastewaters.

Abstract
The adsorptive removal of trihalomethanes (THMs) from spiked water samples was evaluated with a series of modified polysaccharide adsorbents that contain β-cylodextrin or chitosan. The uptake properties of these biodegradable polymer adsorbents were evaluated with a mixture of THMs in aqueous solution. Gas chromatography employing a direct aqueous injection (DAI) method with electrolytic conductivity detection enabled quantification of THMs in water at 295 K and at pH 6.5. The adsorption isotherms for the polymer-THMs was evaluated using the Sips model, where the monolayer adsorption capacities ranged between 0.04 and 1.07 mmol THMs/g for respective component THMs. Unique adsorption characteristics were observed that vary according to the polymer structure, composition, and surface chemical properties. The modified polysaccharide adsorbents display variable molecular recognition and selectivity toward component THMs in the mixed systems according to the molecular size and polarizability of the adsorbates.

Abstract
Modified cellulose materials (CLE-4, CLE-1, and CLE-0.5) were prepared by cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (EP), where the products display variable structure, morphology, and thermal stability. Adsorptive probes such as nitrogen gas and phenolic dyes in aqueous solution reveal that cross-linked cellulose has greater accessible surface area (SA) than native cellulose. The results also reveal that the SA of cross-linked cellulose increased with greater EP content, except for CLE-0.5. The attenuation of SA for CLE-0.5 may relate to surface grafting onto cellulose beyond the stoichiometric cellulose and EP ratio since ca. 30% of the hydroxyl groups of cellulose are accessible for cross-linking reaction due to its tertiary fibril nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results reveal the variable surface roughness and fibre domains of cellulose due to cross-linking. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 13C NMR spectroscopy indicate that cellulose adopts a one-chain triclinic unit cell structure (P1 space group) with gauche-trans (gt) and trans-gauche (tg) conformations of the glucosyl linkages and hydroxymethyl groups. The structural characterization results reveal that cross-linking of cellulose occurs at the amorphous domains. By contrast, the crystalline domains are preserved according to similar features in the XRD, FTIR, and 13C NMR spectra of cellulose and its cross-linked forms. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the role of cross-linking of native cellulose in its structure and functional properties. Cross-linked cellulose has variable surface functionality, structure, and textural properties that contribute significantly to their unique physicochemical properties over its native form.

Abstract
New calixarene-based nanosponges (CaNSs), i.e., hyper-reticulated polymers constituted by calixarene monomer units joined by means of bis(1,2,3-trialzolyl)alkyl linkers, were synthesized, characterized and subjected to preliminary tests to assess their supramolecular absorption abilities towards a set of suitable organic guests, selected as pollutant models. The synthesis was accomplished by means of a CuAAC reaction between a tetrakis(propargyloxy)calix[4]arene and an alkyl diazide. The formation of the polymeric network was assessed by means of FTIR and 13C{1H} CP-MAS solid-state NMR techniques, whereas morphological characterization was provided by SEM microghaphy. The materials were proved to possess pH-dependent sequestration abilities, due to the presence of the weakly basic triazole linkers. Sequestration efficiency indeed depends on the effective occurrence of both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the guest and the polymer lattice. Thus, our CaNS nanosponges can be considered as a new class of purely synthetic smart absorbent materials.

Abstract
A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed. The porous β-cyclodextrin polymer cross-linked using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, possessed well-distributed pores and the largest surface area among current β-cyclodextrin polymers. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the coating had a continuous wrinkled and folded structure, which guarantees a sufficient loading capacity for contaminants. The properties of the developed fiber were evaluated using headspace solid-phase microextraction of five contaminants as model analytes coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Owing to the advantages of a large surface area and three-dimensional cavities, the novel fiber exhibited excellent operational stability and extraction ability. After optimisation of the extraction conditions, including extraction temperature, extraction time, salt effect, and desorption time, validation of the method with water samples achieved good linearity over a wide range (0.01–120 μg L−1) and low detection limits (0.003–1.600 μg L−1). The single-fiber and fiber-to-fiber repeatabilities were 1.7–11.0% and 1.9–11.0%, respectively. The method was applied to the simultaneous analysis of five analytes with satisfactory recoveries (76.6–106.0% for pond water and 89.0–105.9% for rainwater). A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed.![]()

Abstract
Various pre-modified and post-modified cyclodextrin-calixarene hyper-reticulated co-polymers were synthesized, fully characterized by different techniques (FT-IR, 13C{1H} CP-MAS and LGFS solid-state NMR, thermogravimetry, porosimetry), and tested to assess their absorption abilities as nanosponges. The construction of the polymer network was accomplished exploiting the well-known CuAAC reaction between two different heptakis-6-azido-β-cyclodextrins and two different propargyloxy-calix[4]arenes. Post-modification was aimed to achieve the presence of ionizable (acidic or basic) groups on the polymer framework. Sequestration tests towards two model pollutant molecules surprisingly showed that both pristine and post-modified materials actually possess the abilities to act as pH-tunable nanosponges.

Abstract
This commentary reports on a recent scientific study reported in this journal (cf. Molecules 2015, 20(3), 3565-3581). Some key scientific issues that require further explanation and clarification in the former article are as follows: (i) the relationship between the inclusion site accessibility and the level of cross-linking employed are brought into question for the case of α-CD and β-CD cross-linked adsorbent materials; (ii) the binding affinity of the CD/guest complexes were not related to the isotherm parameters for the CD-polymer/guest systems; (iii) the limited molecular level structural characterization of the cross-linked polymer materials; and (iv) the interpretation of the adsorption isotherm results by the authors.

Abstract
Challenges exist for the study of time dependent sorption processes for heterogeneous systems, especially in the case of dispersed nanomaterials in solvents or solutions because they are not well suited to conventional batch kinetic experiments. In this study, a comparison of batch versus a one-pot setup in two variable configurations was evaluated for the study of uptake kinetics in heterogeneous (solid/solution) systems: (i) conventional batch method; (ii) one-pot system with dispersed adsorbent in solution with a semi-permeable barrier (filter paper or dialysis tubing) for in situ sampling; and (iii) one-pot system with an adsorbent confined in a semi-permeable barrier (dialysis tubing or filter paper barrier) with ex situ sampling. The sorbent systems evaluated herein include several cyclodextrin-based polyurethane materials with two types of phenolic dyes: p-nitrophenol and phenolphthalein. The one-pot kinetics method with in situ (Method ii) or ex situ (Method iii) sampling described herein offers significant advantages for the study of heterogeneous sorption kinetics of highly dispersed sorbent materials with particles sizes across a range of dimensions from the micron to nanometer scale. The method described herein will contribute positively to the development of advanced studies for heterogeneous sorption processes where an assessment of the relative uptake properties is required at different experimental conditions. The results of this study will be advantageous for the study of nanomaterials with significant benefits over batch kinetic studies for a wide range of heterogeneous sorption processes.
