Abstract
Chitosan exhibits a wide source, non-toxic and biodegradable, and is the optimal functional raw material for preparing food packaging materials. However, the pure chitosan film has some disadvantages such as limited antibacterial activity and weak mechanical properties. In this study, sulfobetaines modified chitosan (CS-SBMA) was synthesized by grafting copolymerized betaine methacrylate sulfonate onto the chain of chitosan to improve the anti-bacterial adhesion and antibacterial properties of chitosan, aiming to develop antibacterial and anti-bacterial adhesion films based on CS-SBMA and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by the casting method. The structure of CS-SBMA was characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR. The appropriate proportion of CS-SBMA/PVA was determined to be 1/1 and 1/2, by characterizing the composite films with FTIR, XRD, SEM, mechanical, optical, and water resistance behaviors. In addition, CS-SBMA/PVA films showed excellent antibacterial, anti-bacterial adhesion and biofilm control function. The colonies number of E. coli and S. aureus on the surface of CS-SBMA/PVA 1/1 film decreased 94.15 % and 94.27 %, respectively, and 92.93 % of S. aureus and 94.87 % of E. coli colonies were inactivated within 60 min contact. These results indicate that CS-SBMA/PVA film exhibits potential antibacterial and anti-bacterial adhesion properties, which is suitable for food packaging materials.

Abstract
Treatment of wounds is challenging due to bacterial infections, including Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using the merits of alternative antimicrobials like tea tree oil (TTO) and nanotechnology, they can be helpful in combatting bacterial infections. Solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) and chitosan (CS) nanoparticles show great potential as carriers for enhancing the stability and therapeutic benefits of oils. The aim of this study is to compare the influence of nanocarriers in enhancing the antibacterial effects of TTO. The study evaluates the physicochemical and antibacterial properties of TTO-SLN and TTO-CS against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The TTO-SLN nanoparticles showed a clear round shape with the average diameter size of 477 nm, while the TTO-CS nanoparticles illustrated very homogeneous morphology with 144 nm size. The encapsulation efficiency for TTO-CS and TTO-SLN was ∼88.3% and 73.5%, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa for TTO-CS, TTO-SLN, and pure TTO were 35 and 45 µg ml-1, 130 and 170 µg ml-1, and 380 and 410 µg ml-1, respectively. Since TTO-CS revealed an impressively higher antimicrobial effects in comparison with TTO-SLN and TTO alone, it can be considered as a nanocarrier that produces the same antimicrobial effects with lower required amounts of the active substance.

Abstract
In this study, graphene oxide/N-halamine nanocomposite was synthesized through Pickering miniemulsion polymerization, which was then coated on cotton surface. The modified cotton exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity, which could effectively prevent microbial infestation and reduce the probability of hydrolysis of active chlorine, with virtually no active chlorine released in water after 72 h. Deposition of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets endowed cotton with ultraviolet-blocking properties, attributing to enhanced UV adsorption and long UV paths. Moreover, encapsulation of polymeric N-halamine resulted in improved UV stability, thus extending the life of N-halamine-based agents. After 24 h of irradiation, 85 % of original biocidal component (active chlorine content) was retained, and approximately 97 % of initial chlorine could be regenerated. Modified cotton has been proven to be an effective oxidizing material against organic pollutants and a potential antimicrobial substance. Inoculated bacteria were completely killed after 1 and 10 min of contact time, respectively. An innovative and simple scheme for determination of active chlorine content was also devised, and real-time inspection of bactericidal activity could be achieved to assure antimicrobial sustainability. Moreover, this method could be utilized to evaluate hazard classification of microbial contamination in different locations, thus broadening the application scope of N-halamine-based cotton fabrics.

Abstract
Chitosan exhibits moderate antimicrobial properties. Here, we enhanced the antimicrobial properties of chitosan through alkylation and chlorination and evaluated the effect of alkylation on chitosan's hydrophobicity, bacterial attachment, chlorination, biocidal property, and stability. First, chitosan films were prepared through casting and were then immersed in a hexanal solution of different concentrations. The aldehyde groups of hexanal reacted with the amino group in chitosan through a Schiff base reaction. Next, the hexanal-modified chitosan films were soaked in 10 % bleach to form N-halamine. The results demonstrated that the surface became more hydrophobic, and chitosan films with increased hexanal-grafting concentrations exhibited less bacterial attachment. However, the degree of chlorination decreased as the degree of alkylation increased, further reducing the diameter of the zone of inhibition. Nevertheless, all chlorinated samples could kill ~5 log of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within 30 min. Unlike previous results for chlorinated chitosan, in this study, alkylation before chlorination enhanced antibacterial properties and bactericidal ability and decelerated the degradation of chlorinated samples. The results of a systematic evaluation indicated that a hexanal-grafting concentration of approximately 80 mM maintains the equilibrium of the various properties of chitosan. Alkylated and chlorinated chitosan has considerable potential application as mask filter layers.

Abstract
In the present work, nonwoven cotton fabric was modified for antibacterial applications using low-cost and eco-friendly precursors. The treatment of fabric with alkali leads to the formation of active sites for surface modification, followed by dip coating with silver nanoparticles and chitosan. The surface was chlorinated in the next step to transform amide (N-H) groups in chitosan into N-halamine (N-Cl). The modified and unmodified surfaces of the nonwoven cotton fabric have been characterized by FTIR, SEM, and XRD. The active chlorine loading is measured with iodine/sodium thiosulphate. The antimicrobial activity and cell toxicity assay were carried out with and without modifications of nonwoven cotton fabric. The antimicrobial efficacies of loaded fabric were evaluated against four bacterial species (Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, and E.coli). It was found that modified fabric exhibited superior efficiency against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains as compared to their bulk counterparts upon exposure without affecting strength and integrity of fabric. The overall process is economical for commercial purposes. The modified fabric can be used for antimicrobial, health, and food packaging industries, and in other biomedical applications.

Abstract
Abstract
An N-halamine precursor, namely, 2-amino-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-6-methylpyrimidin-4-one (AHM), was used as a chain extender in the preparation of a series of N-halamine polyurethane (PU) films, in order to also instill antibacterial properties. The mechanical properties, thermodynamic performance, and antimicrobial performance of the functionalized PU films were systematically studied. The results showed that the addition of AHM could improve the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the developed PU films. Conducting tests in the presence of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as the model microorganisms revealed that prior to chlorination the antibacterial properties of the chlorinated PU-AHM-Cl films improved significantly relative to the analogous films. The excellent antibacterial properties and the overall superior performance of the PU-AHM-Cl films allow their potential application in microbiological protection materials and related fields.

Abstract
In this report, the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto MnO2/CS nanocomposite material from aqueous solution is investigated. All the factors, which affect the adsorption, such as pH, adsorption time, Cr(VI) initial concentration and adsorbent dosage, are also examined. The results obtained show that the Cr(VI) uptake is strongly affected by pH and ion strength. Analysis within the nonlinear isotherm models indicates that the Sips isotherm combining with the Langmuir and Freundlich models offer the best fit to the experimental data due to the obtained highest R2 and smallest RMSE and χ2 values. The calculated Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity is 61.56 mg g-1 at pH of 2.0 and adsorption time of 120 min. Moreover, the mechanism studies by combining theoretical models with analytical spectroscopies reveal that the electrostatic attraction plays the important role to the uptake of Cr(VI) onto MnO2/CS nanocomposite. Therefore, the present nanocomposite material can be applied to remove total Cr from wastewater produced by the galvanized manufacturing factory with a relatively high efficiency.

Abstract
Current demand for new protective materials ensuring sterility is systematically growing. The purpose of this work was the synthesis of the biocidal N-halamine hydantoin-containing chitosan (CS-CMH-Cl) and characterization of its properties. The functionalization of the chitosan by 5-hydantoinacetic acid substitution leads to obtaining the CS-CMH polymer, which was chlorinated in next step to transform N-H into N-Cl bonds. In this study, the possibility of forming two biocidal N-Cl bonds in hydantoin ring, grafted onto chitosan chains, was proved. The structure and stability of the prepared material was confirmed by spectroscopic (FTIR, NMR, colorimetric test) and microscopic analyses (SEM, AFM). Surface properties were investigated based on contact-angle measurements. In addition, the thermal and photochemical stability of the obtained samples were determined as functional features, determining the range of potential use. It was found that both modified chitosan polymers (CS-CMH and CS-CMH-Cl) were characterized by the smaller thermal stability and more hydrophilic and rougher surface than unmodified CS. Photooxidative degradation of the obtained materials was observed mainly on the sample surface. After irradiation, the surfaces became more hydrophilic-especially in the case of the CS-CMH-Cl-which is advantageous from the point of view of the antibacterial properties. Antibacterial tests against S. aureus and E. coli confirmed the antibacterial activities of received CS-CMH-Cl material.

Abstract
Curcumin grafted hyaluronic acid modified pullulan polymers (Cur-HA-SPu) by chemical conjugation was designed and prepared, and its film may be used to accelerate wound healing and help to fight infection. The synthesis of Cur-HA-SPu polymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and DSC. Cur-HA-SPu film has a higher swelling ratio than that of HA-SPu film. Moreover, the good biocompatibility of Cur-HA-SPu polymer was confirmed by skin irritation, cytotoxicity and hemolysis tests. Compared to Cur, the MTT and proliferation test carried out in L929 cells revealed that Cur-HA-SPu polymer showed no cytotoxicity and enhanced cell proliferation. Cur-HA-SPu polymer exhibited a certain bactericidal activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Furthermore, the materials showed antioxidant activity when DPPH method determined. Wound healing study using wistar rat model demonstrated that Cur-HA-SPu film obtained better wound healing result than that of HA-SPu film or natural healing. The above results suggest that Cur-HA-SPu film is a promising and safety formulation for accelerating skin wound healing.

Abstract
As the most abundant biopolymer on the earth, cellulose has recently gained significant attention in the development of antibacterial biomaterials. Biodegradability, renewability, strong mechanical properties, tunable aspect ratio, and low density offer tremendous possibilities for the use of cellulose in various fields. Owing to the high number of reactive groups (i.e., hydroxyl groups) on the cellulose surface, it can be readily functionalized with various functional groups, such as aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and amines, leading to diverse properties. In addition, the ease of surface modification of cellulose expands the range of compounds which can be grafted onto its structure, such as proteins, polymers, metal nanoparticles, and antibiotics. There are many studies in which cellulose nano-/microfibrils and nanocrystals are used as a support for antibacterial agents. However, little is known about the relationship between cellulose chemical surface modification and its antibacterial activity or biocompatibility. In this study, we have summarized various techniques for surface modifications of cellulose nanostructures and its derivatives along with their antibacterial and biocompatibility behavior to develop non-leaching and durable antibacterial materials. Despite the high effectiveness of surface-modified cellulosic antibacterial materials, more studies on their mechanism of action, the relationship between their properties and their effectivity, and more in vivo studies are required.

Abstract
In order to prepare multifunctional fibrous membranes with hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties and UV resistance, we used silica and titanium dioxide for preparing SiO2@TiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2@TiO2 NPs) to create roughness on the fibrous membranes surfaces. The introduction of TiO2 was used for improving UV resistance. N-Halamine precursor and silane precursor were introduced to modify SiO2@TiO2 NPs to synthesize SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles. The hydrophobic antibacterial fibrous membranes were prepared by a dip-pad process of electrospun biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate/poly-ε-caprolactone (PHB/PCL) with the synthesized SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles. TEM, SEM and FT-IR were used to characterize the synthesized SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles and the hydrophobic antibacterial fibrous membranes. The fibrous membranes not only showed excellent hydrophobicity with an average water contact angle of 144° ± 1°, but also appreciable air permeability. The chlorinated fibrous membranes could inactivate all S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 after 5 min and 60 min of contact, respectively. In addition, the chlorinated fibrous membranes exhibited outstanding cell compatibility with 102.1% of cell viability. Therefore, the prepared hydrophobic antibacterial degradable fibrous membranes may have great potential application for packaging materials. Abstract
Bacterial infection is one of the most severe postoperative complications leading to clinical orthopedic implants failure. To improve the antibacterial property of titanium (Ti) substrates, a bioactive coating composed of chitosan-1-(hydroxymethyl)- 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (Chi-HDH-Cl) and gelatin (Gel) was fabricated via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that Chi-HHD-Cl conjugate was successfully synthesized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and water contact angle measurements were employed to monitor the morphology, roughness changes and surface wettability of Ti substrates, which proved the multilayers coating formation. Antibacterial assay against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) revealed that the Gel/Chi-HDH-Cl modified Ti substrates most efficiently inhibited the adhesion and growth of bacteria. Meanwhile, in vitro cellular tests confirmed that Gel/Chi-HDH-Cl multilayers had no obvious cytotoxicity to osteoblasts. The study thus provides a promising method to fabricate antibacterial Ti-based substrates for potential orthopedic application.

Abstract
Electrical signals can be imposed with exquisite spatiotemporal control and provide exciting opportunities to create structure and confer function. Here, we report the use of electrical signals to program the fabrication of a chloramine wound dressing with high antimicrobial activity. This method involves two electrofabrication steps: (i) a cathodic electrodeposition of an aminopolysaccharide chitosan triggered by a localized region of high pH; and (ii) an anodic chlorination of the deposited film in the presence of chloride. This electrofabrication process is completed within several minutes and the chlorinated chitosan can be peeled from the electrode to yield a free-standing film. The presence of active NCl species in this electrofabricated film was confirmed with chlorination occurring first on the amine groups and then on the amide groups when large anodic charges were used. Electrofabrication is quantitatively controllable as the cathodic input controls film growth during deposition and the anodic input controls film chlorination. In vitro studies demonstrate that the chlorinated chitosan film has antimicrobial activities that depend on the chlorination degree. In vivo studies with a MRSA infected wound healing model indicate that the chlorinated chitosan film inhibited bacterial growth, induced less inflammation, developed reorganized epithelial and dermis structures, and thus promoted wound healing compared to a bare wound or wound treated with unmodified chitosan. These results demonstrate the fabrication of advanced functional materials (i.e., antimicrobial wound dressings) using controllable electrical signals to both organize structure through non-covalent interactions (i.e., induce chitosan's reversible self-assembly) and to initiate function-conferring covalent modifications (i.e., generate chloramine bonds). Potentially, electrofabrication may provide a simple, low cost and sustainable alternative for materials fabrication. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE We believe this work is novel because this is the first report (to our knowledge) that electronic signals enable the fabrication of advanced antimicrobial dressings with controlled structure and biological performance. We believe this work is significant because electrofabrication enables rapid, controllable and sustainable materials construction with reduced adverse environmental impacts while generating high performance materials for healthcare applications. More specifically, we report an electrofbrication of antimicrobial film that can promote wound healing.

Abstract
In order to search for active and selective serotonin 5-HT7R antagonists among 3,5-disubstituted arylpiperazine-imidazolidine-2,4-diones, the role of the introduction/deletion and the mutual orientation of aromatic rings was analyzed. Chemical modifications of 2nd generation lead structure of 3-(3-(4-(diphenylmethyl)piperazin-1-yl)-2-hydroxypropyl)-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-methylimidazolidine-2,4-dione (2, KKB16) were performed. New derivatives (4-18) were designed and synthesized. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the representative compound 5-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-[2-hydroxy-3-(4-phenylpiperazin-1-yl)propyl]-5-methylimidazolidine-2,4-dione (3) was performed to support molecular modeling and SAR studies. The affinity for 5-HT7R, D2R and 5-HT1AR in radioligand binding assays for the entire series and ADME-Tox parameters in vitro for selected compounds (7, 10, and 13) were evaluated. Molecular docking and pharmacophore model assessment were performed. According to the obtained results, 5-methyl-5-naphthylhydantoin derivatives were found to be the new highly active 5-HT7R agents (Ki ≤ 5 nM) with significant selectivity over 5-HT1AR and D2R. On the contrary, the (1-naphthyl)piperazine moiety was gained with the potent dual 5-HT7R/5-HT1AR action (Ki: 11 nM/19 nM).

Abstract
As one of the most powerful biocides, N-halamine based antimicrobial materials have attracted much interest due to their non-toxicity, rechargeability, and rapid inactivation against a broad range of microorganisms. In this study, novel titanium dioxide-ADMH core-shell nanoparticles [TiO2@poly (ADMH-co-MMA) NPs] were prepared via miniemulsion polymerization using 3-allyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (ADMH) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with nano-TiO2. The produced nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR, TEM, TGA, and XPS. The UV stability of N-halamine nanoparticles has been improved with the addition of titanium dioxide. After chlorination treatment by sodium hypochlorite, biocidal efficacies of the chlorinated nanoparticles against S. aureus (ATCC 6538) and E. coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43895) were determined. The nanoparticles showed excellent antimicrobial properties against bacteria within brief contact time. In addition, in vitro cell cytocompatibility tests showed that the antibacterial nanoparticles had good biocompatibility.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop new films based on chitosan functionalized with sulfonamide drugs (sulfametoxydiazine, sulfadiazine, sulfadimetho-xine, sulfamethoxazol, sulfamerazine, sulfizoxazol) in order to enhance the biological effects of chitosan. The morphology and physical properties of functionalized chitosan films as well the antioxidant effects of sulfonamide-chitosan derivatives were investigated. The chitosan-derivative films showed a rough surface and hydrophilic properties, which are very important features for their use as a wound dressing. The film based on chitosan-sulfisoxazol (CS-S6) showed the highest swelling ratio (197%) and the highest biodegradation rate (63.04%) in comparison to chitosan film for which the swelling ratio was 190% and biodegradation rate was only 10%. Referring to the antioxidant effects the most active was chitosan-sulfamerazine (CS-S5) which was 8.3 times more active than chitosan related to DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging ability. This compound showed also a good ferric reducing power and improved total antioxidant capacity.
