Metal Ion-Containing Hydrogels: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications in Bone Tissue Engineering

Hydrogel, as a unique scaffold material, features a three-dimensional network system that provides conducive conditions for the growth of cells and tissues in bone tissue engineering (BTE). In recent years, it has been discovered that metal ion-containing hybridized hydrogels, synthesized with metal particles as the foundation, exhibit excellent physicochemical properties, osteoinductivity, and osteogenic potential. They offer a wide range of research prospects in the field of BTE. This review provides an overview of the current state and recent advancements in research concerning metal ion-containing hydrogels in the field of BTE. Within materials science, it covers topics such as the binding mechanisms of metal ions within hydrogel networks, the types and fabrication methods of various metal ion-containing hydrogels, and the influence of metal ions on the properties of hydrogels. In the context of BTE, the review delves into the osteogenic mechanisms of various metal ions, the applications of metal ion-containing hydrogels in BTE, and relevant experimental studies in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, future improvements in bone repair can be anticipated through advancements in bone bionics, exploring interactions between metal ions and the development of a wider range of metal ions and hydrogel types.

Design and synthesis of drug hydrogels containing carboxymethylcellulose with honeycomb structure and pH-sensitivity as drug delivery systems for adriamycin, metformin, and naproxen

The aim of this research is to prepare and identify functionalized carboxymethylcellulose/mesoporous silica nanohydrogels (CMC/NH2-MCM-41) for obtaining a pH-sensitive system for the controlled release of drugs. The beads of CMC/NH2-MCM-41 nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing NH2-MCM-41 in a CMC polymer matrix and crosslinking with ferric ions (Fe3+). The SEM analysis of samples revealed enhancement in surface porosity of the functionalized nanohydrogel beads compared to the conventional beads. Swelling of the prepared functionalized nanohydrogels was evaluated at various pH values including pH = 7.35-7.45 (simulated body fluid or healthy cells), pH = 6 (simulated intestinal fluid), and pH = 1.5-3.5 (simulated gastric fluid). The swelling of CMC/MCM-41 and CMC/NH2-MCM-41 nanohydrogels at the pH values of simulated body fluid and simulated intestinal fluid is much higher than that of simulated gastric fluid, indicating successful synthesis of pH-sensitive nanohydrogels for drug delivery. The drug loading results showed that drug release in the CMC/NH2-MCM-41 system is much slower than that in the CMC/MCM-41 system. The results of the survival studies for the manufactured systems showed a very good biocompatibility of the designed drug delivery systems for biological applications. By coating the surface of functionalized mesopores with CMC hydrogel, we were able to develop a pH-sensitive intelligent drug delivery system.

A biocompatible double network hydrogel based on poly (acrylic acid) grafted onto sodium alginate for doxorubicin hydrochloride anticancer drug release

This study involved the synthesis of a new biocompatible slow-release hydrogel named poly (acrylic acid) grafted onto sodium alginate (poly (AA-g-SA)) double network hydrogel (DNH). The hydrogel was created by polymerization of acrylic acid grafted onto sodium alginate polysaccharide using crosslinkers N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and calcium chloride via free radical polymerization. The water absorbency of the poly (AA-g-SA) double network hydrogel was improved by optimizing the quantities of ammonium persulfate initiator, pH-sensitive monomer of acrylic acid, and crosslinkers. Various analytical techniques including attenuated total reflection Fourier-transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area analysis (BET) were used to characterize the synthesized hydrogels. The swelling and on-off switching behaviors of the hydrogels were investigated in deionized (DI) water at different temperatures and pH values. The optimum poly (AA-g-SA) DNH was tested for in vitro release of a hydrophilic chemotherapeutic drug, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). The eco-friendly hydrogel favorably optimized the DOX slow release owing to its swelling rate, high absorption and regeneration capabilities. The findings of this study may have significant implications for medical and scientific research.

Magnetically Actuated Shape Memory Polymers for On-Demand Drug Delivery

Repeated use of intravenous infusions to deliver drugs can cause nerve damage, pain, and infection. There is an unmet need for a drug delivery method that administers drugs on demand for prolonged use. Here, we developed magnetically responsive shape memory polymers (SMPs) to enhance control over drug release. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (mnps) were synthesized and incorporated into previously developed SMPs to enable magnetically induced shape memory effects that can be activated remotely via the application of an alternating magnetic field. These materials were tested for their shape memory properties (dynamic mechanical analysis), cytocompatibility (3T3 fibroblast viability), and tunable drug delivery rates (UV−VIS to evaluate the release of incorporated doxorubicin, 6-mercaptopurine, and/or rhodamine). All polymer composites had >75% cytocompatibility over 72 h. Altering the polymer chemistry and mnp content provided methods to tune drug release. Namely, linear polymers with higher mnp content had faster drug release. Highly cross-linked polymer networks with lower mnp content slowed drug release. Shape memory properties and polymer/drug interactions provided additional variables to tune drug delivery rates. Polymers that were fixed in a strained secondary shape had a slower release rate compared with unstrained polymers, and hydrophobic drugs were released more slowly than hydrophilic drugs. Using these design principles, a single material with gradient chemistry and dual drug loading was synthesized, which provided a unique mechanism to deliver two drugs from a single scaffold with distinct delivery profiles. This system could be employed in future work to provide controlled release of selected drug combinations with enhanced control over release as compared with previous approaches.

Formulation of Magneto-Responsive Hydrogels from Dually Cross-Linked Polysaccharides: Synthesis, Tuning and Evaluation of Rheological Properties

Smart hydrogels based on natural polymers present an opportunity to fabricate responsive scaffolds that provide an immediate and reversible reaction to a given stimulus. Modulation of mechanical characteristics is especially interesting in myocyte cultivation, and can be achieved by magnetically controlled stiffening. Here, hyaluronan hydrogels with carbonyl iron particles as a magnetic filler are prepared in a low-toxicity process. Desired mechanical behaviour is achieved using a combination of two cross-linking routes—dynamic Schiff base linkages and ionic cross-linking. We found that gelation time is greatly affected by polymer chain conformation. This factor can surpass the influence of the number of reactive sites, shortening gelation from 5 h to 20 min. Ionic cross-linking efficiency increased with the number of carboxyl groups and led to the storage modulus reaching 103 Pa compared to 101 Pa–102 Pa for gels cross-linked with only Schiff bases. Furthermore, the ability of magnetic particles to induce significant stiffening of the hydrogel through the magnetorheological effect is confirmed, as a 103-times higher storage modulus is achieved in an external magnetic field of 842 kA·m−1. Finally, cytotoxicity testing confirms the ability to produce hydrogels that provide over 75% relative cell viability. Therefore, dual cross-linked hyaluronan-based magneto-responsive hydrogels present a potential material for on-demand mechanically tunable scaffolds usable in myocyte cultivation.

High efficacy of tamoxifen-loaded L-lysine coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in cell cycle arrest and anti-cancer activity for breast cancer therapy

Introduction: Due to the side effects of drugs, the development of nanoscale drug delivery systems has led to a significant improvement in medicinal therapies due to drug pharmacokinetics changes, decreased toxicity, and increased half-life of the drug. This study aimed to synthesize tamoxifen (TMX)-loaded L-lysine coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as a nano-carrier to investigate its cytotoxic effects and anti-cancer properties against MCF-7 cancer cells.

Methods: Magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with L-lysine (F-Lys NPs). Then, TMX was loaded onto these NPs. The characteristics of synthesized nanoparticles (F-Lys-TMX NPs) were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The drug release was analyzed at pH 5.8 and pH 7.4. The MCF-7 cells were exposed to F-Lys-TMX NPs, F-Lys NPs, and TMX for 24, 48, and 72 hours. To evaluate the cytotoxic potential of designed nanoparticles, MTT and apoptosis assays, real-time PCR, and cell cycle analysis was carried out.

Results: The F-Lys-TMX NPs had spherical morphology with a size ranging from 9 to 30 nm. By increasing the nanoparticles concentration and treatment time, more cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis induction were observed in F-Lys-TMX NPs-treated cells compared to the TMX. The expression levels of ERBB2, cyclin D1, and cyclin E genes were down-regulated and expression levels of the caspase-3 and caspase-9 genes were up-regulated. Studies on the drug release revealed a slow and controlled pH-dependent release of the nanoparticles. Cell cycle analysis indicated that F-Lys-TMX NPs could arrest the cells at the G0/G1 phase.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that F-Lys-TMX NPs are more effective and have the potential for cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis induction compared to the TMX. Hence, F-Lys-TMX NPs can be considered as an anti-cancer agent against MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Preparation of Cross-linked Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt Hydrogel Films Loading Drug of Gentamicin Sulfate for Antibacterial Wound Dressing

Hydrogels, possessing high biocompatibility and adaptability to biological tissue, show great usability in medical applications. In this research, a series of novel cross-linked chitosan quaternary ammonium salt loading with gentamicin sulfate (CTMCSG) hydrogel films with different cross-linking degrees were successfully obtained by the reaction of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (TMCS) and epichlorohydrin. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterize the chemical structure and surface morphology of CTMCSG hydrogel films. The physicochemical property, gentamicin sulphate release behavior, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity of the CTMCSG against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were determined. Experimental results demonstrated that CTMCSG hydrogel films exhibited good water stability, thermal stability, drug release capacity, as well as antibacterial property. The inhibition zone of CTMCSG hydrogel films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus could be up to about 30 mm. Specifically, the increases in maximum decomposition temperature, mechanical property, water content, swelling degree, and a reduction in water vapor permeability of the hydrogel films were observed as the amount of the cross-linking agent increased. The results indicated that the CTMCSG-4 hydrogel film with an interesting physicochemical property, admirable antibacterial activity, and slight cytotoxicity showed the potential value as excellent antibacterial wound dressing.

Composite Hydrogel of Poly(acrylamide) and Starch as Potential System for Controlled Release of Amoxicillin and Inhibition of Bacterial Growth

Novel composite hydrogels of poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) and starch, at different ratios, were studied as potential platforms for controlled release of amoxicillin. The composite hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and swelling kinetic measurements. The morphology analysis revealed the presence of starch granules well embedded within the PAAm network. The increase in starch content increased the rate of water uptake and the swelling degree at equilibrium. The amoxicillin release kinetics was sensitive to pH and temperature conditions. The in vitro bacterial growth inhibition of antibiotic-loaded hydrogels was tested though disc diffusion assays with Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and a carbapenemase producer Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. The optimal release profile at physiological conditions and the powerful bacteria growth inhibition effects of amoxicillin-loaded hydrogels evidenced its potential for biomedical applications, particularly in oral administration and the local treatment of bacterial infections.

Target-Specific Superparamagnetic Hydrogel with Excellent pH Sensitivity and Reversibility: A Promising Platform for Biomedical Applications

Superparamagnetism has been widely used for many biomedical applications, such as early detection of inflammatory cancer and diabetes, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), hyperthermia, etc., whereas incorporation of superparamagnetism in stimulus-responsive hydrogels has now gained substantial interest and attention for application in these fields. Recently, pH-responsive superparamagnetic hydrogels showing the potential use in disease diagnosis, biosensors, polymeric drug carriers, and implantable devices, have been developed based on the fact that pH is an important environmental factor in the body and some disease states manifest themselves by a change in the pH value. However, improvement in pH sensitivity of magnetic hydrogels is a dire need for their practical applications. In this study, we report the distinctly high pH sensitivity of new synthesized dual-responsive magnetic hydrogel nanocomposites, which was accomplished by copolymerization (free-radical polymerization) of two pH-sensitive monomers, acrylic acid (AA) and vinylsulfonic acid (VSA) with an optimum ratio, in the presence of presynthesized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4(OH) x ). The monomers contain pH-sensitive functional groups (COO- and SO3 - for AA and VSA, respectively), and they have also been widely used as biomaterials because of the good biocompatibility. The pH sensitivity of the superparamagnetic hydrogel, poly(acrylic acid-co-vinylsulfonic acid), PAAVSA/Fe3O4, was investigated by swelling studies at different pH values from pH 7 to 1.4. Distinct pH reversibility of the system was also demonstrated through swelling/deswelling analysis. Thermal stability, chemical configuration, magnetic response, and structural properties of the system have been explored by suitable characterization techniques. Furthermore, the study reveals a pH-responsive significant change in the overall morphology and packing fraction of iron oxide nanoparticles in PAAVSA/Fe3O4 via energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) elemental mapping with the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) study (for freeze-dried PAAVSA/Fe3O4, swelled at different pH values), implying a drastic change in susceptibility and induced saturation magnetization of the system. These important features could be easily utilized for the purpose of diagnosis using magnetic probe and/or impedance analysis techniques.

Mechanically enhanced graphene oxide/carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibril composite fiber as a scalable adsorbent for heavy metal removal

Recently, graphene oxide(GO) has gained much attention for heavy metal removal due to its high surface area and lots of functional groups on the surface. However, GO itself in powder form is far away from practical adsorbents because it remains dispersed in liquid phase which causes difficulty in the separation from effluent. In this study, GO/carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibril (CMCNF) composite fiber(CF) is developed as an efficient and durable adsorbent. Cross-linked GO/CMCNF CF was continuously produced by employing Fe³⁺ ion as a coagulant during a typical wet-spinning process. Based on multiple interactions such as ionic bonding and electrostatic interactions between Fe³⁺ and carboxyl group on CMCNF, the CF exhibits enhanced mechanical property than pure GO fiber. GO/CMCNF-Fe³⁺ CF showed efficient lead (Pb²⁺) uptake with successful adsorbent recovery, which indicates durable and cost-competitive fiber type adsorbent for heavy metal ions.

Fabrication and evaluation of carboxymethylated diethylaminoethyl cellulose microcarriers as support for cellular applications

Cellulose based microcarriers can be used in biomedical science as supports for cell adhesion and proliferation. However, to facilitate cell attachment to their surface, they require appropriate functional surface charge. Cell function such as adhesion and growth is increased on the modified surfaces with cationic and anionic groups. In this research, diethylaminoethyl cellulose was carboxymethylated to produce soluble multifunctional cellulose with simultaneous presence of cationic and anionic functional groups. Then, carboxymethylated diethylaminoethyl cellulose (CM-DEAEC) were produced by ionic crosslinking. Various instrumental techniques were applied to characterize the microcarriers. Biological tests were also performed to determine cell seeding efficiency, proliferation and attachment on microcarriers. Fabricated CM-DEAEC microcarriers had 1500-1800 μm diameter, +26.0 surface potential, 376% swelling behavior and 233 °C glass transition temperature respectively. The findings showed that CM-DEAEC microcarriers support cellular attachment and proliferation very well and hence are promising materials for cell therapy and tissue engineering applications.

Formation and Physiochemical Properties of Silver Nanoparticles with Various Exopolysaccharides of a Medicinal Fungus in Aqueous Solution

Natural polysaccharides are the most widely used biopolymers for green synthesis of eco-friendly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In a previous study, a high molecular weight (MW) fraction of exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by a medicinal fungus Cs-HK1 has been shown useful for green and facile synthesis of AgNPs in water. This study was to further evaluate the effects of molecular properties of EPS on the formation, stability and properties of AgNPs with different EPS fractions at various pH conditions. Three EPS fractions (P_0.5, P_2.0 and P_5.0: MW high to low and protein content low to high) were reacted with silver nitrate at various pH 3.0-8.0 in water. The most favorable pH range was 5.5-8.0 for the formation and stable dispersion of AgNPs. At a given pH, the maximum amount of AgNPs was produced with P_5.0, and the minimum with P_0.5. The shape, size and physiochemical properties of AgNPs were strongly affected by the molecular characteristics of EPS (MW and conformation). The results may be helpful for understanding the factors and mechanisms for formation of stable AgNPs with natural polysaccharides and the interactions between AgNPs and the polysaccharide hydrocolloids in water.

Synthesis and characterization of insulin/zirconium phosphate@TiO2 hybrid composites for enhanced oral insulin delivery applications

In this work, a series of composites of insulin (Ins)/zirconium phosphate (ZrP) were synthesized by intercalation method, then, these composites were coated with TiO₂ by sol-gel method to prepare Ins/ZrP@TiO₂ hybrid composites and the drug release of the composites was investigated by using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Ins/ZrP (10, 30, 60 wt%) composites were prepared by intercalation of insulin into the ZrP layers in water. Then Ins/ZrP composites were coated with different amounts of TiO₂ (30, 50, 100 wt %) by using titanium tetra n-butoxide, as precursor. Formation of intercalated Ins/ZrP and Ins/ZrP@TiO₂ hybrid composites was characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, BET and XRD analysis. Zeta potential of the optimized Ins/ZrP@TiO₂ hybrid composite was determined -27.2 mV. Cytotoxic effects of the optimized Ins/ZrP@TiO₂ hybrid composite against HeLa and Hek293T cell lines were evaluated using MTT assay and the results showed that designed drug delivery system was not toxic in biological environment. Compared to the Ins/ZrP composites, incorporation of TiO₂ coating enhanced the drug entrapment considerably, and reduced the drug release. The Ins/ZrP composites without TiO₂ coating released the whole drug after 30 min in pH 7.4 (phosphate buffer solution) while the TiO₂-coated composites released the entrapped drug after 20 h. In addition to increasing the shelf life of hormone, this nanoencapsulation and nanocoating method can convert the insulin utilization from injection to oral and present a painless and more comfortable treatment for diabetics.

Composites of Polymer Hydrogels and Nanoparticulate Systems for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Applications

Due to their unique structures and properties, three-dimensional hydrogels and nanostructured particles have been widely studied and shown a very high potential for medical, therapeutic and diagnostic applications. However, hydrogels and nanoparticulate systems have respective disadvantages that limit their widespread applications. Recently, the incorporation of nanostructured fillers into hydrogels has been developed as an innovative means for the creation of novel materials with diverse functionality in order to meet new challenges. In this review, the fundamentals of hydrogels and nanoparticles (NPs) were briefly discussed, and then we comprehensively summarized recent advances in the design, synthesis, functionalization and application of nanocomposite hydrogels with enhanced mechanical, biological and physicochemical properties. Moreover, the current challenges and future opportunities for the use of these promising materials in the biomedical sector, especially the nanocomposite hydrogels produced from hydrogels and polymeric NPs, are discussed.

Personalizing Biomaterials for Precision Nanomedicine Considering the Local Tissue Microenvironment

New advances in (nano)biomaterial design coupled with the detailed study of tissue-biomaterial interactions can open a new chapter in personalized medicine, where biomaterials are chosen and designed to match specific tissue types and disease states. The notion of a "one size fits all" biomaterial no longer exists, as growing evidence points to the value of customizing material design to enhance (pre)clinical performance. The complex microenvironment in vivo at different tissue sites exhibits diverse cell types, tissue chemistry, tissue morphology, and mechanical stresses that are further altered by local pathology. This complex and dynamic environment may alter the implanted material's properties and in turn affect its in vivo performance. It is crucial, therefore, to carefully study tissue context and optimize biomaterials considering the implantation conditions. This practice would enable attaining predictable material performance and enhance clinical outcomes.

Recent Advances in Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Magnetic Oxide Nanomaterials

Oxide nanomaterials are in great demand due to their unique physical, chemical and structural properties. The nanostructured materials with desired magnetic properties are the future of power electronics. Unique magnetic properties and excellent biocompatibility of these materials found applications in pharmaceutical field also. For these applications, the synthesis of magnetic oxide nanomaterials with required properties is highly desirable. Till now, various techniques have been evolved for the synthesis of oxide nanomaterials with full control over their shape, size, morphology and magnetic properties. In nanoscale, the magnetic properties are totally different from their bulk counterparts. In this range, each nanoparticle acts as a single magnetic domain and shows fast response to applied magnetic field. This review article discusses the synthesis techniques, properties and the applications of magnetic oxide nanomaterials. Various characterization techniques for magnetic materials have been discussed along with the literature of iron oxide, nickel oxide, and cobalt oxide nanomaterials. The challenges for further development of these materials have also been presented to broaden their rapidly emerging applications.

Development of a Layer-by-Layer Assembled Film on Hydrogel for Ocular Drug Delivery

Hydrogel is a kind of attractive drug carriers because of its good biocompatibility and transparency. But traditional hydrogel showed some restrictions in its application in ocular drug delivery. A simple surface modification technique based on layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembled multilayer for ocular drug delivery was developed in this work. Polycarboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (poly(CM-β-CD))/poly-l-lysine (PLL) multilayer film was designed and constructed for ocular drug delivery, sinceβ-CD showed good drug delivery property. The properties such as the contact angle and transparency varied a little with the deposition of poly(CM-β-CD)/PLL multilayer. Orfloxacin and puerarin were loaded into multilayer during the self-assembly procedure by two methods, which were tracked by the largest drug absorbance of UV spectrum. The loaded drug amount by incorporating drugs into poly(CM-β-CD) solution was larger than that by incorporating drugs into PLL solution. The loaded drug in the multilayer could gradually be released from multilayer in some period either for orfloxacin or for puerarin. The drug release behavior was influenced by drug loading method and pH value of released medium. Moreover, the balanced released drug amount by incorporating drugs into poly(CM-β-CD) solution is much smaller than that by incorporating drugs into PLL solution.

Novel functionalization of discrete polymeric biomaterial microstructures for applications in imaging and three-dimensional manipulation

Adapting ways to functionalize polymer materials is becoming increasingly important to their implementation in translational biomedical sciences. By tuning the mechanical, chemical, and biological qualities of these materials, their applications can be broadened, opening the door for more advanced integration into modern medical techniques. Here, we report on a method to integrate chemical functionalizations into discrete, microscale polymer structures, which are used for tissue engineering applications, for in vivo localization, and three-dimensional manipulation. Iron oxide nanoparticles were incorporated into the polymer matrix using common photolithographic techniques to create stably functional microstructures with magnetic potential. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we can promote visualization of microstructures contained in small collections, as well as facilitate the manipulation and alignment of microtopographical cues in a realistic tissue environment. Using similar polymer functionalization techniques, fluorine-containing compounds were also embedded in the polymer matrix of photolithographically fabricated microstructures. The incorporation of fluorine-containing compounds enabled highly sensitive and specific detection of microstructures in physiologic settings using fluorine MRI techniques ((19)F MRI). These functionalization strategies will facilitate more reliable noninvasive tracking and characterization of microstructured polymer implants as well as have implications for remote microstructural scaffolding alignment for three-dimensional tissue engineering applications.

Synthesis of a novel supermagnetic iron oxide nanocomposite hydrogel based on graft copolymerization of poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) onto salep for controlled release of drug

In this research, a novel supermagnetic iron oxide nanocomposite hydrogel was prepared using simultaneous in situ formation of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) and three-dimensional cross-linked polymer networks based on graft copolymerization of poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) onto salep (PDMA-g-salep). The prepared ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel was systematically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). In addition, the ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel exhibits favorable swelling properties that are sensitive to temperature, pH, and external magnetic field (EMF). The drug release behavior of the prepared hydrogel under EMF, different temperatures and pHs was also studied for the evaluation of the release mechanism and determination of diffusion coefficients. Finally, the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity studies of the prepared hydrogel were examined. These results suggested that the ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel could be a promising candidate for biological dressing applications.
