Abstract
In this present investigation, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose grafted with Fumaric acid/Acrylamide (CMC/FA/AAm=CFA) hydrogel and their silver nanocomposite hydrogels (CFA-Ag x, x = 5, 10 and 20) were developed by simple, cost effective and ecofriendly greener method. Mint leaf extract was used as an efficient natural reducing agent due to presence of active and antioxidant potential of polyphenol and flavonoid components. Swelling equilibrium of CFA hydrogel showed Seq% 3000 both in pH medium and distilled water. CFA (90:10) hydrogel has been produced greater than Seq% 6000. The synthesized CFA (90:10)-Ag-5, CFA (90:10)-Ag-10 and CFA (90:10)-Ag-20 nanocomposite hydrogels have been observed lower Seq% 2000-3000 than the CFA hydrogel. The homogeneous distribution of AgNPs throughout the CFA hydrogel and nanocomposites has been explored by SEM analysis. The interaction of network heteroatoms with AgNPs has been strongly revealed by the FTIR spectra and XRD analysis. The thermal stability of CFA (90:10)-Ag-5, 10, and 20 nanocomposite hydrogels have showed greater stability than CFA hydrogel which is confirmed by TGA/DSC thermogram analysis. The TEM analysis was used to explore a uniform distribution of spherical AgNPs (10 nm-50 nm) embedded on the CFA composite hydrogel. The CFA (90:10)-Ag-20 nanocomposite hydrogel has showed good antibacterial activity beside E. coli (Gram positive) and S. aureus (Gram negative) pathogens. Based on the antibacterial activity and swelling properties of CFA-Ag nanocomposite hydrogels have the ability to accelerate the antibacterial activity and are potential candidates for medical and environmental applications.

Abstract
Gum-based hydrogels (GBHs) have been widely employed in diverse water purification processes due to their environmental properties, and high absorption capacity. More desired properties of GBHs such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, material cost, simplicity of manufacture, and wide range of uses have converted them into promising materials in water treatment processes. In this review, we explored the application of GBHs to remove pollutants from contaminated waters. Water resources are constantly being contaminated by a variety of harmful effluents such as heavy metals, dyes, and other dangerous substances. A practical way to remove chemical waste from water as a vital component is surface adsorption. Currently, hydrogels, three-dimensional polymeric networks, are quite popular for adsorption. They have more extensive uses in several industries, including biomedicine, water purification, agriculture, sanitary products, and biosensors. This review will help the researcher to understand the research gaps and drawbacks in this field, which will lead to further developments in the future.

Abstract
The excessive use of herbicides had caused serious environmental pollution and ecological problems. Therefore, it is imperative to explore an effective method to reduce herbicide residues and pollution. In the present study, we used superabsorbent hydrogels coated 14C-acetochlor (SH-ACE) to investigate its behavior in different soils under oxic conditions. After 100 days, the mineralization by SH-ACE was increased by 2.3%, 2.5% and 3.3% in the red clay soils, fluvio-marine yellow loamy soils and coastal saline soils, respectively, compared to the control group. This result indicated that the SH-ACE treatment resulted in more complete degradation and detoxification of acetochlor. In addition, the dissipation rates of acetochlor were significantly faster in the SH-ACE treatment, which reduced the persistence of acetochlor. The probable degradation pathways of acetochlor involved dechlorination, hydroxylation, deethoxymethylation, and the formation of thioacetic acid derivatives in the two treatments, but the contents of transformation products were completely different. These findings suggest that the SH-ACE treatment has a significant effect to accelerate the degradation of acetochlor. When developing green pesticides, we emphasize that superabsorbent hydrogel coating treatment should be considered as a promising method for ecological safety in the environment.

Abstract
Acrylamide-methacrylic acid copolymer named P (AM-co-MAA) was synthesized via aqueous solution polymerization, and then mixed with crosslinker, flame retardants and initiators to prepare multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogels with transparency, fire resistance and anti-ageing property. The results show that the application of multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel imparts high level of transparency and excellent fire resistance to the fire-resistant glass, and the light transmittance and fire resistance of the flame-retarded hydrogel increases with the increasing mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). When the mass ratio of AM to MAA is 4:1, the obtained P(AM-co-MAA) imparts the lowest backside temperature of 130 °C at 3600 s and highest light transmittance of 86.1% to the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel. TG and DSC analysis show that the addition of P(AM-co-MAA) increases the thermal stability of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogels due to the formation of numerous hydrogen bonds via the complexation between amide and carboxyl groups. Accelerated ageing test indicates that the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel containing P(AM-co-MAA) exerts durable fire resistance and transparency, and the ageing resistance of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel depends on the mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy to prepare a novel multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel with excellent light transmittance, fire resistance and anti-ageing properties.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to fabricate and evaluate a pH sensitive cross-linked polymeric network through the free radical polymerization technique for the model drug, cyclophosphamide, used in the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The Hydrogels were prepared using a polymeric blend of agarose, Pluronic acid, glutaraldehyde, and methacrylic acid. The prepared hydrogels were characterized for drug loading (%), swelling pattern, release behavior, the ingredient’s compatibility, structural evaluation, thermal integrity, and toxicity evaluation in rabbits. The new polymer formation was evident from FTIR findings. The percentage loaded into the hydrogels was in the range of 58.65–75.32%. The developed hydrogels showed significant differences in swelling dynamics and drug release behavior in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) when compared with simulated gastric fluid (SGF). The drug release was persistent and performed in a controlled manner for up to 24 h. A toxicity study was conducted on white albino rabbits. The developed hydrogels did not show any signs of ocular, skin, or oral toxicity; therefore, these hydrogels can be regarded as safe and potential carriers for controlled drug delivery in biomedical applications.

Abstract
Recently, removal of synthetic dyes, especially cationic dye of malachite green (MG), and inhibition of the growth of pathogenic microorganism from drinking water have gained much interest due to their high toxic potency for aquatic biosystems. Herein, a new dye adsorbent with outstanding antibacterial activity was fabricated based on xanthan gum (XG) and SiO2 nanoparticles through ultrasonication followed by the crosslinking polymerization with vinyl imidazole monomer. The nano adsorbents were characterized with various techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM. The nanocomposites were applied as a filter for discarding MG dye and killing the growth of bacterial strains such as E.coli and S.aureus which are considered as the common impurities for drinking water. The data revealed that a maximum adsorption capacity was recorded as 99.5% (Qmax = 588.2 mg/g) at optimum conditions including 10 mg nanocomposite, 10 mL of MG dye (450 ppm), pH = 7, the temperature of 30 °C, and the adsorption time was adjusted within 6 h. The process of dye adsorption was applied to the common isotherm models of Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich, and the findings showed that the adsorption behavior was well fitted with the Langmuir one (R2 = 0.9983). Moreover, different adsorption kinetic models such as pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion were studied for understanding the mechanism of MG adsorption onto nanocomposite surface. It was found that both intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-first-order have participated evenly in the adsorption mechanism of MG dye. Ultimately, the as-prepared nanocomposites were tested against the growth of S. aureus, and E.coli manifesting a superior inhibition diameter as 23.5 ± 0.50, and 25.33 ± 0.47 mm against E.coli, and S. aureus, respectively. Therefore, our new XG-g-PVI/SiO2 adsorbent is a very promising adsorbent for the fast and efficient capture of dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
A porous hydrogel nanocomposite has been made by grafting poly(itaconic acid) on the polysaccharide, gum ghatti and by embedding magnetite nanoparticles in the copolymer gel matrix. This novel functional material Ggh-g-PIA/Fe3O4 was characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, XRD, BET, Zeta potential measurements and VSM techniques. The nanocomposite possesses mesoporous structure with high surface area and exhibits super-paramagnetic behavior due to the presence of magnetite nanoparticles. The hydrogel nanocomposite was evaluated as an adsorbent material for removal of dyes and divalent metal ions. Significant adsorption capacities of 410.2, 387.6, 416.5 and 401.4 mg g-1 towards methylene blue, rhodamine 6G, Cu (II) and Hg (II) ions respectively were observed. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich isotherm model and kinetic studies demonstrated the adsorption to be a pseudo second order kinetic process. Intraparticle diffusion model suggested adsorption to occur by a multi-step diffusion process. Thermodynamic studies indicated a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Further, the desorption study indicated the possibility of successful regeneration of the adsorbent. A high removal efficiency, recyclability, convenient recovery after use due to the magnetic nature makes this polysaccharide based nanocomposite an environment friendly adsorbent material for water purification.

Abstract
In this study, the capacity of methylene blue (MB) uptake from aqueous solution was investigated using acrylic amide-co-3-Allyloxy-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt/Gum Arabic semi-IPN hydrogel. The semi-IPN hydrogels were prepared by the classical free radical solution technique. The swelling experiments were carried out gravimetrically and the swelling kinetics parameters were calculated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the semi-IPN hydrogel formation. The MB uptake was studied by the batch technique and the impact of different conditions was investigated. It was found that the obtained semi-IPN hydrogels gave adsorption capacity for the dye within a range of 101-187 mg g-1 at the initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order) and the adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin equations) were tested and the adsorption data was well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.8718) was 655.2 mg g-1. The thermodynamic study indicated the spontaneity and the endothermic nature of MB adsorption. Furthermore, the usability study showed that the prepared adsorbents could be employed repeatedly for successive 5 cycles of adsorption and desorption.

Abstract
Abstract
The application of superabsorbent polymer hydrogels is gaining much research attention. Industrial applications include agriculture, environmental engineering, biomedical and tissue engineering, oilfield, construction and electrical products, personal care products, and wastewater treatment. In this study, the swelling performance and adsorption kinetics of two commercial superabsorbent polymer hydrogels were evaluated based upon their stimuli response to pH and salinity at varying temperature and reaction time periods. Characterisation and evaluation of the materials were performed using analytical techniques—optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and the gravimetric method. Experimental results show that reaction conditions strongly influence the swelling performance of the superabsorbent polymer hydrogels considered in this study. Generally, increasing pH and salinity concentration led to a significant decline in the swelling performance of both superabsorbent polymer hydrogels. An optimal temperature range between 50 and 75 °C was considered appropriate based on swell tests performed between 25 c to 100 °C over 2-, 4- and 6-h time periods. These findings serve as a guideline for material technologist and field engineers in the use of superabsorbent polymer hydrogels for a wide range of applications. The study results provide evidence that the two superabsorbent polymer hydrogels can be used for petroleum fraction-saline water emulsions separation, among other applications.
Graphic abstract
Highlights
The swelling performance of the two superabsorbent polymer hydrogels experimentally studied showed a maximum absorbency in the range of 270 to 300g/g.
Thermal gravimetric analysis curves show that both superabsorbent polymer hydrogels are stable at high temperatures.
Commercially available superabsorbent polymer hydrogels can be used in industrial water absorption applications.

Abstract
Ammonia in gas phase has an unpleasant smell and is hazardous to human health. Though activated carbon has been widely used as a representative adsorbent, it is significantly vulnerable to humidity. In the study, a nonwoven fibrous polypropylene polymer was synthesized using a photo-graft reaction with imidazole followed by quaternization with CH3I. The time of each reaction was optimized for the maximum adsorption. The FT-IR confirmed that 1-vinyl imidazole (Vim) and methyl group (-CH3) were successfully introduced into PP fibers. The Langmuir isotherm characterized that the adsorption capacity was 44.84 mg NO3-N g-1. The adsorption intensity, 1/n, by Freundlich adsorption isotherm was 0.41 indicating that the adsorption of NO3-N onto PP-g-Vim-CH3I was favorable at the studied conditions. In the gas phase, maximum adsorption of was calculated to be 40 ± 0.69 mg NH3 g-1 by BET model. Though the adsorption amount decreased by 2.5 times as the temperature increased from 15 °C to 45 °C, the amounts and rates of adsorption were not influenced by humidity. In conclusion, the synthesized PP-g-Vim-CH3I was able to ammonia in the gas phase at a range of humidity.

Abstract
Abstract
Acrylamide/acrylic acid copolymers (AAm/AA) have been synthesized by microemulsion polymerization in absence and presence of trivalent cations Al+3 and Fe+3. Starch materials were obtained by introducing cations Al+3 and Fe+3, in the form of aqueous solutions of sulphates(VI) (modif. starch/Me+3), into the oxidized starch (modif. starch). The flocculation performance of obtained polyacrylamide copolymers and the one based on the natural polymer was compared with the performance of the commercial AAm/AA flocculant (CF). All materials were characterized by capillary viscometry, FTIR and DSC methods. An aqueous suspension of talc was used for the flocculation studies. The flocculation effectiveness was evaluated on the basis of reduction of suspension extinction and the sludge volume. It was found that synthesized AAm/AA/Me+3 copolymers and modif. starch/Me+3 materials exhibit better flocculation properties for a model talc suspension than a commercially available floculant.

Abstract
In this study, sodium alginate was employed as a starting material for preparing two kinds of biocompatible adsorbents, including calcium alginate hydrogel beads and magnetic hydrogel beads. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray techniques were used to characterize the prepared adsorbents. The performance of the prepared adsorbents for the removal of methyl violet from aqueous solution was studied in detail. Both kinetics and equilibrium aspects of methyl violet adsorption were investigated, and the obtained equilibrium and kinetics data were described with various adsorption models. The effects of initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on adsorption performance were investigated. Thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were obtained as well.

Abstract
The prospective uses of tree gum polysaccharides and their nanostructures in various aspects of food, water, energy, biotechnology, environment and medicine industries, have garnered a great deal of attention recently. In addition to extensive applications of tree gums in food, there are substantial non-food applications of these commercial gums, which have gained widespread attention due to their availability, structural diversity and remarkable properties as 'green' bio-based renewable materials. Tree gums are obtainable as natural polysaccharides from various tree genera possessing exceptional properties, including their renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature and their ability to undergo easy chemical modifications. This review focuses on non-food applications of several important commercially available gums (arabic, karaya, tragacanth, ghatti and kondagogu) for the greener synthesis and stabilization of metal/metal oxide NPs, production of electrospun fibers, environmental bioremediation, bio-catalysis, biosensors, coordination complexes of metal-hydrogels, and for antimicrobial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, polysaccharides acquired from botanical, seaweed, animal, and microbial origins are briefly compared with the characteristics of tree gum exudates.

Abstract
Environmentally responsive biomaterials have played key roles in the design of biosensors and drug delivery vehicles. Their physical response to external stimuli, such as temperature or pH, can transduce a signal or trigger the release of a drug. In this work, we designed a robust, highly tunable, pH-responsive nanoscale hydrogel system. We present the design and characterization of poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide) hydrogel nanoparticles, crosslinked with methylenebisacrylamide, through inverse emulsion polymerization. The effects of polymerization parameters (i.e., identities and concentrations of monomer and surfactant) and polymer composition (i.e., weight fraction of ionic and crosslinking monomers) on the nanoparticles' bulk and environmentally responsive properties were determined. We generated uniform, spherical nanoparticles which, through modulation of crosslinking, exhibit a volume swelling of 1.77-4.07, relative to the collapsed state in an acidic environment. We believe our system has potential as a base platform for the targeted, injectable delivery of hydrophilic therapeutics. With equal importance, however, we hope that our systematic analysis of the individual impacts of polymerization and purification conditions on nanoparticle composition, morphology, and performance can be used to expedite the development of alternate hydrophilic nanomaterials for a range of biomedical applications. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Salecan is a water-soluble extracellular β-glucan and has excellent physicochemical and biological properties for hydrogel preparation. In this study, a new pH/magnetic field dual-responsive hydrogel was prepared by the graft copolymerization of salecan with 4-pentenoic acid (PA) and N-hydroxyethylacrylamide (HEAA) in the presence of Fe3 O4 @SiO2 nanoparticles for doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) release. Integration of Fe3 O4 @SiO2 nanoparticles in salecan-g-poly(PA-co-HEAA) copolymers afforded magnetic sensitivity to the original material. DOX-loaded hydrogels exhibited a clear capacity for pH/magnetic field dual-responsive controlled drug release. Lowering the pH to acidic conditions or introducing an external magnetic field caused an enhancement in DOX release. This salecan-g-poly(PA-co-HEAA)/Fe3 O4 @SiO2 composite hydrogel is a promising drug carrier for magnetically targeted drug delivery with enhanced DOX cytotoxicity against A549 cells.
