Facile fabrication of mesoporous poly(ethylene- co -vinyl alcohol)/chitosan blend monoliths

Polypropylene/lignin blend monoliths used as sorbent in oil spill cleanup

With increasing industrial development, frequent oil spillages in water; therefore, it is imperative and challenging to develop absorbents materials that are eco-efficiency, cost-effective, and pollution prevention. In this study, sorbents obtained from Lignin incorporated with Polypropylene in different levels loading 0, 10, 20 % wt using thermally induced phase separation Technique (TIPS). The Polypropylene/Lignin blend monoliths were fabricated and compared in terms of morphological, thermal, and wetting characterizations. The successfully blending of different lignin concentrations with preserved the chemical structure of the polymer was confirmed by FTIR analysis. Thermogravimetric tests displayed that the existence of Lignin has changed the onset temperature (Tonset) of the blending sorbents, decreasing as the loading of Lignin is increased. The contact angle measurement showed a decrease in the hydrophobicity of sorbents with increasing lignin loading, Polypropylene/Lignin blend monoliths showed better absorption toward oils (soybean - engine) as compared to Polypropylene itself. PP10L showed an improvement in the oil sorption capacity around 2 times compared to the Polypropylene. These excellent features make Polypropylene/Lignin blend monoliths more competitive promising candidates than commercial absorbent.

Controlled preparation of interconnected 3D hierarchical porous carbons from bacterial cellulose-based composite monoliths for supercapacitors

The controlled design and synthesis of porous carbons with anticipated microstructures and morphologies, and a high specific surface area (SSA) have been focused on for supercapacitor development. Here, hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) with an interconnected three-dimensional morphology derived from a natural-based bacterial cellulose (BC) composite have been successfully prepared by thermally induced phase separation of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) and subsequent carbonization/activation. The SSA and porous architectures can be controlled by fine-tuning the preparation conditions such as the precursor morphology and structure, activator dosage and activation temperature, and the relationships between the super-capacitive properties and the SSA and pore size distribution have been further investigated. The obtained porous carbon material possesses a hierarchical porous structure with moderate micropores, favorable mesopores, interconnected macropores, a high SSA of 2161 m² g^-1 and a maximum oxygen-dopant content of 9.99%, enabling an increase in the active materials utilization efficiency and wettability. Due to the synergistic effects of these features, the obtained porous carbon electrode used in a supercapacitor shows a high specific capacitance of 420 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1, excellent rate performance with 75% capacitance retention at 20 A g^-1, and good cycling stability with ∼96.1% retention even after 10 000 continuous charge-discharge cycles at 5 A g^-1. Additionally, the assembled supercapacitor based on porous carbon displays a moderate energy density of 20 W h kg^-1. The good electrochemical performance and facile effective synthesis of bio-derived carbon materials with tunable porous structures indicate promising applications in supercapacitors.

Template-free synthesis of polystyrene monoliths for the removal of oil-in-water emulsion

Oil-in-water emulsions are harmful to both humankind and environment. Frequent oil spill disasters make it urgent to develop low cost and high-efficiency materials for the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions. In this study, we report the facile template-free synthesis of macroporous polystyrene (PS) monolith from PS solution using a thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) technique. The fabricated monolith showed high hydrophobicity, superoleophilicity, and macroporous structure. Moreover, the monolith exhibited high removal efficiency toward different oil-in-water emulsions. The monolith can be fabricated from cheap and commonly-used plastic. Thus, we anticipate that this research will contribute to both the recycling of PS and the treatment of oil spill accidents.

Biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) nanoparticle-based binary blends for oil spill control

In the current study, biocompatible and biodegradable blends based on poly(vinyl alcohol) nanoparticles - PVAn mixed with either chitosan (Ch) or starch (St) - were prepared and investigated as nanoabsorbents for oil elimination from wastewater. The use of water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a mixed solvent is the key factor for preparing aggregated PVAn, which is further mixed with Ch or St. Nanoblends were applied as oil absorbents, and the results showed that PVAn/St possess high adsorption capacity than PVAn/Ch and PVAn. The maximum sorption capacities (q_g/g) of the PVAn/Ch sorbents for hydraulic oil, kerosene, and toluene were 33.6, 73.96, and 93.1g/g, respectively. The absorbed oil could be rapidly recovered by simple mechanical squeezing and reused without any other modification. The blends showed excellent reusability and could be reused for at least 10 times with minimal losses. The current study demonstrates the application of these blends as an ideal alternative sorbent for oil spillage cleanup.

Facile synthesis of flexible macroporous polypropylene sponges for separation of oil and water

Oil spill disasters always occur accidentally, accompanied by the release of plenty of crude oil that could spread quickly over a wide area, creating enormous damage to the fragile marine ecological system. Therefore, the facile large-scale synthesis of hydrophobic three-dimensional (3-D) porous sorbents from low cost raw materials is in urgent demand. In this study, we report the facile template-free synthesis of polypropylene (PP) sponge by using a thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) technique. The obtained sponge showed macroporous structure, excellent mechanical property, high hydrophobicity, and superoleophilicity. Oil could be separated from an oil/water mixture by simple immersing the sponge into the mixture and subsequent squeezing the sponge. All of these features make this sponge the most promising oil sorbent that will replace commercial non-woven PP fabrics.
