Advancements in Polymer-Assisted Layer-by-Layer Fabrication of Wearable Sensors for Health Monitoring

Recent advancements in polymer-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) fabrication have revolutionized the development of wearable sensors for health monitoring. LbL self-assembly has emerged as a powerful and versatile technique for creating conformal, flexible, and multi-functional films on various substrates, making it particularly suitable for fabricating wearable sensors. The incorporation of polymers, both natural and synthetic, has played a crucial role in enhancing the performance, stability, and biocompatibility of these sensors. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the principles of LbL self-assembly, the role of polymers in sensor fabrication, and the various types of LbL-fabricated wearable sensors for physical, chemical, and biological sensing. The applications of these sensors in continuous health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and management are discussed in detail, highlighting their potential to revolutionize personalized healthcare. Despite significant progress, challenges related to long-term stability, biocompatibility, data acquisition, and large-scale manufacturing are still to be addressed, providing insights into future research directions. With continued advancements in polymer-assisted LbL fabrication and related fields, wearable sensors are poised to improve the quality of life for individuals worldwide.

Transparent regenerated cellulose film containing azobenzene group with reversible stimulus discoloration property

The cellulose film, exhibiting color alterations in response to external stimuli, presents itself as a promising functional material. In this study, a universal dissolution-regeneration technique was employed to manufacture a transparent, regenerated cellulose film, characterized by its reversible multi-stimulus discoloration property. This functional cellulose film, endowed with both photochromic and acid-chromic attributes, was synthesized through the introduction of a cellulose-grafted azobenzene derivative into the cellulose solution. The hue of a cellulose film irradiated with ultraviolet light could be inverted upon exposure to visible light or heat. Furthermore, when subject to heating, irradiation, or immersion in an acidic medium, this functional film demonstrated pronounced transparency. The acid-chromic behavior of the film was readily discernible when exposed to highly concentrated acidic aqueous solutions. Both the photochromic and acid-chromic phenomena were discernable to the unaided eye. After ten cycles, no fading of the reversible discoloration properties of the material occurred. This transparent regenerated cellulose film stands as a viable candidate for applications in optical data storage, intelligent switches, and sensors, owing to its capacity for reversible stimulus-triggered discoloration.

Self-assembly of porous cellulose fibers and the incorporation of graphene carbon quantum dots for stable luminescence

Porous fibers as excellent carriers can be used to prepare photoluminescence materials. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were derived from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. After CNCs were squeezed into a coagulating bath containing silicon precursors obtained by the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate, porous cellulose fibers were constructed through self-assembly and then incorporated with graphene carbon quantum dots (GQDs) to prepare porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers. The silicon precursor amount, self-assembly time, and corrosion time were optimized. In addition, the morphology, structure and optical properties of the products were investigated. These results showed that as-prepared porous cellulose fibers with mesopores presented loose and porous mesh. Interestingly, the porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers exhibited blue fluorescence, and the maximum emission peak appeared at 430 nm under the excitation wavelength of 350 nm. Furthermore, the relative fluorescence intensity of the porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers was significantly enhanced compared with nonporous photoluminescence cellulose fibers. This work provided a new method to prepare environmentally and stably photoluminescence fibers, which had potential applications in anti-counterfeit packaging and smart packaging.

A 3D smart wood membrane with high flux and efficiency for separation of stabilized oil/water emulsions

Oily sewage discharged from indiscriminate industrial and frequent oil spills have become a serious global problem. There is an urgent need to separate stable oil/water emulsions by efficient and environmentally friendly methods. Membrane separation technology has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost, thus is an effective solution to the problems of oily wastewater. However, the manufacture of multifunctional membranes with high efficiency, high flux and self-cleaning using renewable materials remains a challenge. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) smart membranes with switchable superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces were prepared by grafting photo-responsive poly-spiropyran (PSP) on wood-based substrates via surface atom transfer radical polymerization. This novel membrane can efficiently separate stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions due to reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition by switching UV and visible light irradiation. Remarkably, after immobilization, the PSP grafted on the wood substrate exhibited a faster photo response effect than the free spiropyran (SP). More importantly, the prepared 3D smart membranes showed exceptional high flux (4392 L•m^-2•h^-1) and efficiency (above 99.99 %), good cycle stability (99.99 % after 12 times) and durability (available for at least 60 days) for the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. This work opens a new avenue for the design of functional biomass-derived membranes for efficient and sustainable oily wastewater treatment with high flux, easy scale-up, and green regeneration.

Pyrolysis of Precious Chinese Xuan Paper Containing Ammonium Phytate as a Flame Retardant

Xuan paper with outstanding cultural and artistic values is one of the most precious Chinese handmade papers and is widely used in traditional calligraphy and painting. However, the highly combustible cellulosic raw materials of Xuan paper present potential fire hazards. Ammonium phytate (AP) originating from biosourced phytic acid has been used for the flame-retardant treatment of Chinese Xuan paper by facile spray coating. The limiting oxygen index value of the treated Xuan paper increased to higher than 40%, demonstrating that the flammability of Xuan paper was greatly reduced by this treatment. The excellent flame retardancy afforded by this treatment was confirmed by cone calorimetry. TGA was used to demonstrate that the presence of AP changed the thermal decomposition process to promote char formation during the degradation of Xuan paper. The flame-retardant mode of action of phytate-coated Xuan paper was investigated using TG-FTIR, SEM, and XPS spectra. A P-N cooperative effect was proposed to account for both the condensed phase and gas-phase flame-retardant actions. The phosphorus component promotes char formation in the condensed phase, while the nitrogen component releases inert species to dilute the fuel load in the gas phase. The ink-wetting property of the coated Xuan paper was influenced negligibly by the coating process. The development of fire-resistant Xuan paper using ecofriendly flame retardants through simple and convenient spray coating has been demonstrated.

Electro-Thermochromic Luminescent Fibers Controlled by Self-Crystallinity Phase Change for Advanced Smart Textiles

Smart textiles with tunable luminescence have received special attention due to their great potential in various advanced photonic applications. Particularly, the development of one-dimensional, on-demand, responsive fluorescence fibers with excellent adaptability is of great significance. Herein, we propose electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers regulated by a self-crystallinity phase change; that is, their tunable luminescence properties are derived from the reversible conversion of the dispersion state and fluorescence emission of fluorophore molecules during the crystallization/melting processes of phase-change materials. First results obtained with an alginate wet-spinning system demonstrate that the self-crystallinity phase change can produce polymeric fibers with thermochromic fluorescence behavior, which are prepared using microemulsion particles containing a phase-change fatty acid and coumarin fluorescent dyes. These thermochromic fluorescence fibers possess a fast response speed, high emission contrast, and good reversibility (>100 cycles). Particularly, the thermochromic fluorescent fibers can gain an electrotriggered capability by means of electric heating materials, and their great potential in precision operation applications is demonstrated. It is easy to adjust the switching point of the electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers, highlighting their potential use in a diverse range of applications, the designs of which can be personalized. This work offers a simple yet versatile strategy for constructing electro-thermochromic fluorescence fibers for advanced smart textiles.

Photoregulated Morphological Transformation of Spiropyran Derivatives Achieving the Tunability of Interfacial Hydrophilicity

Regulation of self-assembly morphology is an effective strategy to obtain advanced functional materials with expected properties. However, achieving remarkable morphological transformation by light irradiation is still a challenge. Herein, three simple spiropyran derivatives (SP1, SP2, and SP3) are constructed, achieving different degrees of morphological transformation from nanospheres to hollow tadpole-like structures (SP3), tubular structures (SP2), and microsheets (SP1) after ultraviolet light irradiation. Interestingly, the hollow tadpole-like structures (SP3) can further extend to Y-shaped or T-shaped tubular morphology. In the process, SP1, SP2, and SP3 can be isomerized from a closed-ring form (hydrophobicity) to an open-ring form (hydrophilicity) in different degrees, interacting differently with methanol solvent molecules. The formation of hollow structures or microsheets along with the isomerization of spiropyran derivatives contributes to the adjustment of the hydrophilicity of the interface. Therefore, SP1, SP2, and SP3 with photoregulated morphological transformation show promising applications in tunable interface materials.

Chiral Photonic Liquid Crystal Films Derived from Cellulose Nanocrystals

As a nanoscale renewable resource derived from lignocellulosic materials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have the features of high purity, high crystallinity, high aspect ratio, high Young's modulus, and large specific surface area. The most interesting trait is that they can form the entire films with bright structural colors through the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process under certain conditions. Structural color originates from micro-nano structure of CNCs matrixes via the interaction of nanoparticles with light, rather than the absorption and reflection of light from the pigment. CNCs are the new generation of photonic liquid crystal materials of choice due to their simple and convenient preparation processes, environmentally friendly fabrication approaches, and intrinsic chiral nematic structure. Therefore, understanding the forming mechanism of CNCs in nanoarchitectonics is crucial to multiple fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering application. Herein, a timely summary of the chiral photonic liquid crystal films derived from CNCs is systematically presented. The relationship of CNC, structural color, chiral nematic structure, film performance, and applications of chiral photonic liquid crystal films is discussed. The review article also summarizes the most recent achievements in the field of CNCs-based photonic functional materials along with the faced challenges.

Photochromic holo-cellulose wood-based aerogel grafted azobenzene derivative by SI-ATRP

Wood is actually a natural polymers composite that is easy to process, mainly constituted of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. However, most wood-based functional materials are prepared by physical methods, which undoubtedly limit the application of wood-based materials. Herein, the wood aerogel (WA) was obtained from wood by delignification and freezing dried. The WA then was fabricated into an unexpected photochromic wood aerogel (PWA) via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) covalently grafting poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl-azo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} (PMAZOM). Both WA and PWA showed good compression resilience. The hydrophobicity of PWA was obviously enhanced because of the surface modification. The color of PWA can change from yellow to orange-red after being irradiated by UV light for 30 s. The color of sample can be reversibly changed to yellow under sunlight for 200 s. The lightweight and photosensitive wood aerogel is potential to apply for optical information storage materials and photosensitive devices.

Encryption and authentication of security patterns by ecofriendly multi-color photoluminescent inks containing oxazolidine-functionalized nanoparticles

Counterfeiting of confidential documents has been a costly challenge for banks, companies, and customers. Encryption of invisible security marks, such as barcodes, quick response codes, and logos, in national or international confidential documents by high-security anticounterfeiting inks is the most significant solution for counterfeiting problems. Ecofriendly multi-color photoluminescent anticounterfeiting inks based on highly-fluorescent polymer nanoparticles functionalized with new oxazolidine derivatives were developed for the fast and facile encryption of security labels on cellulosic documents, such as paper currency, passport, and certificate. Depending on the polarity of functionalized polymer nanoparticles, a wide range of colors and fluorescence emissions were observed as a result of polar-polar interactions between the oxazolidine molecules and surface functional groups of the nanoparticles. The fluorescent polymer nanoparticles showed spherical, vesicular, and cauliflower-like morphologies resulted from different surface functional groups. Functional polymer nanoparticles displayed high stability and printability on cellulosic substrates due to hydrogen bonding interactions. The highly-fluorescent polymer nanoparticles were also used to prepare anticounterfeiting inks with different colors and fluorescence emissions. All the ecofriendly polymeric anticounterfeiting inks were loaded to stamps with specific marks, and then applied to different confidential documents. Printed labels displayed highly intense fluorescence emission in different colors (green, orange, pink, and purple depending on the matrix polarity) under UV irradiation (365 nm). These water-based multi-color fluorescent anticounterfeiting inks with highly intense, bright, and sensitive fluorescence emission have potential applications in encryption and authentication of security patterns.

The Electrical-Triggered High Contrast and Reversible Color-Changing Janus Fabric Based on Double Side Coating

A sensitive electro-thermochromic Janus fabric driven by voltage is demonstrated via a facial double side coating. The graphene forms a conductive layer that allows Joule heating to supply the thermal resource for the electro-thermochromic behavior of polyester fabric. The thermochromic dye with reversible color-changing property is coated on the opposite side of the graphene layer. The color of electro-thermochromic Janus fabric changes from blue to white with a gradual heating that exceeded 45 °C at the applied voltage of 10 V. The switching rate of color is rapid with the increase of temperature from the room temperature to above 45 °C in 8 s, resulting from the superior resistive heating of the graphene. The electrical conductivity of the electro-thermochromic Janus fabric is not disturbed once undergoing a bending angle range from 30° to 150° and the temperature remains stable after 1000 bending cycles which clearly indicates the excellent flexibility of the fabric. The steady signal in the heating/cooling curve is observed after 500 cycles, pointing out the outstanding durability of the electro-thermochromic Janus fabric under the supplied voltage. It is realizable that the color of electro-thermochromic Janus fabric is triggered accurately by varying the supplied voltage. The simplicity of this design makes it attractive for the application of flexible electro-thermochromic textile, such as active visual camouflage, personal thermal management, and information displays.

Multifunctional modification of cotton using layer-by-layer finishing with chitosan, sodium lignin sulphonate and boric acid

Functionally modified fabrics produced using sustainable techniques are in huge demand in today's world. In the present work, cotton fabric was modified using layer-by-layer two-stage finishing method using a solution of chitosan in citric acid (CS) and sodium lignin sulphonate (SLS) with boric acid (BA), thus granting several performance traits like wrinkle-free, antibacterial, flame retardant, UV protection and antioxidant properties. The finished fabric was evaluated for several textile properties like tensile strength, bending length, crease recovery, whiteness index and functional properties like antibacterial activity, UV protection, flame retardancy and antioxidant properties under standard conditions. The finished cotton showed an increase in CRA, antibacterial activity in the range 70-89%, UPF in the excellent range, much higher LOI values with a decrease in heat release and antioxidant activity of higher than 93%. The novel method of multifunctional finishing of cotton by layer-by-layer technique is explored.

Easily Prepared and Reusable Films for Fast-Response Rewritable Light Printing

Paper, for writing and printing, is consumed a lot in modern life. However, the production of conventional paper could cause many problems, such as deforestation and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to explore novel strategies to solve these problems. In this work, a polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high strength, excellent transparency, and fast photochromic properties is designed and prepared. The film can display different colors by using a variety of reagents, exhibiting its potential application as a paper medium. Its rapid photochromic properties allow complex high-resolution images to be displayed by UV light printing. It is found that the mechanical and photochromic properties could be regulated by the introduction of triethylene glycol, and the fading process could be controlled by changing the temperature and humidity. Moreover, it is rewritable, self-repairable, and recyclable, and can also achieve long-term preservation without fading. It is envisioned that the environmentally friendly films with low cost, ease of preparation, and recycling advantages have the potential to be an alternative to conventional paper for writing and printing.

Light-Induced Aggregation and Disaggregation of Stimuli-Responsive Latex Particles Depending on Spiropyran Concentration: Kinetics of Photochromism and Investigation of Reversible Photopatterning

Light-controlling the physical and chemical properties of smart polymers by using photochromic compounds has been an interesting research subject. Incorporation of spiropyran (SP) on the surface of particles can induce photoswitchable aggregation/disaggregation to stimuli-responsive colloids. Herein, we developed a novel class of stimuli-responsive latex particles bearing SP with different contents (0, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt %) by semicontinuous emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization, which is able to change the particle size by light-induced aggregation/disaggregation in response to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and visible light. The scanning electron microscopy images revealed the spherical morphology of the latex particles, with the size in the range of 400-900 nm. Light-induced aggregation and disaggregation of stimuli-responsive latex particles were investigated by dynamic light scattering and also confirmed by variation of transmittance during UV illumination time using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The range of the light-induced shift in the particle size is about 200-600 nm (depending on the concentration of SP), where the reduction of transmittance upon UV irradiation (and conversely upon visible light) confirms the ability of latex particles for displaying reversible photoswitchable aggregation/disaggregation and also light-controlling the particle size. The kinetics of SP to merocyanine (MC) and MC to SP isomerizations were experimentally investigated and fitted by exponential equations. The photochromic latexes displayed remarkable photoswitchability and photofatigue resistant properties under alternating UV and visible light irradiation cycles. Additionally, these stimuli-responsive latexes displayed potential applications such as anticounterfeiting inks in erasable and rewritable writings on cellulosic papers for increasing safety in security documents.

Rewritable Anticounterfeiting Polymer Inks Based on Functionalized Stimuli-Responsive Latex Particles Containing Spiropyran Photoswitches: Reversible Photopatterning and Security Marking

Increase of safety in security documents by using anticounterfeiting inks based on fluorochromic and photochromic compounds has attracted a great deal of attention in the recent years. Herein, we developed novel functionalized stimuli-responsive latex particles containing spiropyran (1 wt %) by semicontinuous emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, which are usable as anticounterfeiting inks for marking on security documents and also photopatterning on cellulosic papers. The size and morphology of the latex particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering and their functionality was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. All the stimuli-responsive latexes are composed of spherical particles with different hydroxyl, epoxy, and carboxylic acid functional groups, and the size of the particles varies in the range of 400-900 nm. Additionally, the latex particles undergo a remarkable light-induced size variation (aggregation-disaggregation) upon UV illumination (365 nm), depending on the functional group type, as a result of π-π stacking interactions and also electrostatic attractions between the different particles. The photochromic behavior, kinetics of the SP ⇌ MC isomerization, photoswitchability, and photofatigue-resistant characteristics of the prepared latexes were extensively investigated. The results display that the photochromic behavior and SP ⇌ MC isomerization can significantly be influenced by the polar interactions between the functional groups and MC molecules. As a novel application, the prepared stimuli-responsive latexes were used as anticounterfeiting inks for writing on cellulosic paper and also security marking on several monies, where the written phrase displayed red fluorescence emission and coloration under and after UV illumination (365 nm), respectively. Additionally, the latexes were sprayed on cellulosic papers to prepare stimuli-responsive papers for investigation of their photopatterning ability under UV irradiation and different masking. The presence of functional groups and large particle sizes are the main effective factors for stabilization of the latex particles on cellulosic papers. This is the first report on application of functionalized stimuli-responsive latex particles containing spiropyran as anticounterfeiting inks for security marking and photopatterning on cellulosic papers, directly and without using further additives.

Photochromic Paper Indicators for Acidic Food Spoilage Detection

A photoresponsive microstructured composite is fabricated through the impregnation of cellulosic filter paper (FP) with a spiropyran-modified acrylic polymer. The polymer enwraps uniformly each individual cellulose fiber, increases the thermal stability of cellulose, and ensures the preservation of the composite functionalities even upon removal of the surface layers through mechanical scratching. The photochromic spiropyran moieties of the polymer, even while embedded in the cellulosic sheet, can reversibly interconvert between the colorless spiropyran and the pink merocyanine isomeric states upon irradiation with UV and visible light, respectively. Moreover, the photochromic polymer presents a faster photochromic response and a higher resistance to photodegradation, with an outstanding reusability for more than 100 switching cycles when it is incorporated in the cellulose network. Most importantly, the acidochromism of the modified FP, attributed to the spiropyran molecules after UV activation, allows the real-time optical and visual detection of acidity changes and spoilage in food products, such as wine and milk. Spoilage due to bacterial degradation and oxidation processes generates acidic vapors that induce the protonation of the merocyanine. This results in a visually detectable chromic transition from pink to white of the treated cellulose fibers, corresponding to a blue shift in the absorption spectrum. The developed photoresponsive cellulose composite can serve as cost-effective robust optical component in integrated functional platforms and consumer-friendly indicators for smart food packaging, as well as portable on demand acidoresponsive interfaces for gas monitoring in industrial and environmental applications.

Application of Chitin/Chitosan and Their Derivatives in the Papermaking Industry

Chitin/chitosan and their derivatives have become of great interest as functional materials in many fields within the papermaking industry. They have been employed in papermaking wet-end, paper surface coating, papermaking wastewater treatment, and other sections of the papermaking industry due to their structure and chemical properties. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the application of chitin/chitosan and their derivatives in the papermaking industry. The development of their application in the papermaking area will be reviewed and summarized.
