Abstract
Cancer, as the foremost challenge among human diseases, has plagued medical professionals for many years. While there have been numerous treatment approaches in clinical practice, they often cause additional harm to patients. The emergence of nanotechnology has brought new directions for cancer treatment, which can deliver anticancer drugs specifically to tumor areas. This article first introduces the application scenarios of nanotherapies and treatment strategies of nanomedicine. Then, the noteworthy characteristics exhibited by biopolymer materials were described, which make biopolymers stand out in polymeric nanomedicine delivery. Next, we focus on summarizing the state-of-art studies of five categories of proteins (Albumin, Gelatin, Silk fibroin, Zein, Ferritin), nine varieties of polysaccharides (Chitosan, Starch, Hyaluronic acid, Dextran, cellulose, Fucoidan, Carrageenan, Lignin, Pectin) and liposomes in the field of anticancer drug delivery. Finally, we also provide a summary of the advantages and limitations of these biopolymers, discuss the prevailing impediments to their application, and discuss in detail the prospective research directions. This review not only helps readers understand the current development status of nano anticancer drug delivery systems based on biopolymers, but also is helpful for readers to understand the properties of various biopolymers and find suitable solutions in this field through comparative reading.

Abstract
To enhance the resistant starch (RS) content of corn starch, in this work, carboxymethyl chitosan/corn starch/sodium alginate microcapsules (CMCS/CS/SA) with varying concentrations of SA in a citric acid (CA) solution were designed. As the SA concentration increased from 0.5% to 2%, the swelling of the CMCS/CS/SA microcapsule decreased from 15.28 ± 0.21 g/g to 3.76 ± 0.66 g/g at 95 °C. Comparatively, the onset, peak, and conclusion temperatures (To, Tp, and Tc) of CMCS/CS/SA microcapsules were higher than those of unencapsulated CS, indicating that the dense network structure of microcapsules reduced the contact area between starch granules and water, thereby improving thermal stability. With increasing SA concentration, the intact and dense network of CMCS/CS/SA microcapsules remained less damaged after 120 min of digestion, suggesting that the microcapsules with a high SA concentration provided better protection to starch, thereby reducing amylase digestibility. Moreover, as the SA concentration increased from 0.5% to 2%, the RS content of the microcapsules during in vitro digestion rose from 42.37 ± 0.07% to 57.65 ± 0.45%, attributed to the blocking effect of the microcapsule shell on amylase activity. This study offers innovative insights and strategies to develop functional starch with glycemic control properties, holding significant scientific and practical value in preventing diseases associated with abnormal glucose metabolism.

Abstract
Starch as an edible, biosafe, and functional biopolymer, has been tailored at nanoscale to deliver bioactive guests. Nanostarches fabricated in various morphologies including nanosphere, nanorod, nanoworm, nanovesicle, nanopolyhedron, nanoflake, nanonetwork etc., enable them to assemble different kinds of bioactives due to structural particularity and green modification. Previous studies have reviewed nanostarch for its preparation and application in food, however, no such work has been done for the potential of delivery system via polymorphic nanostarches. In this review, we focus on the merits of nanostarch empowered by multi-morphology for delivery system, and also conclude the assembly strategies and corresponding properties of nanostarch-based carrier. Additionally, the advantages, limitations, and future perspectives of polymorphic nanostarch are summarized to better understand the micro/nanostarch architectures and their regulation for the compatibility of bioactive molecules. According to the morphology of carrier, nanostarch effectively captures bioactives on the surface and/or inside core to form tight complexes, which maintains their stability in the human microenvironment. It improves the bioavailability of bioactive guests by different assembly approaches of carrier/guest surface combination, guest@carrier embedment, and nanostarch-mediated encapsulation. Targeted release of delivery systems is stimulated by the microenvironment conditions based on the complex structure of nanostarch loaded with bioactives.

Abstract
Recently, the role of starch-based carrier systems in anticancer drug delivery has gained considerable attention. Although there are same anticancer drugs, difference in their formulations account for unique therapeutic effects. However, the exploration on the effect-enhancing of anticancer drugs and their loading system by modified starch from the perspective of carrier regulation is still limited. Moreover, research on the reduced toxicity of the anticancer drugs due to modified starch as the drug carrier mediated by the intestinal microenvironment is lacking, but worth exploring. In this review, we examined the effect of modified starch on the loading and release properties of anticancer drugs, and the effect of resistant starch and its metabolites on intestinal microecology during inflammation. Particularly, the interactions between modified starch and drugs, and the effect of resistant starch on gene expression, protein secretion, and inflammatory factors were discussed. The findings of this review could serve as reference for the development of anticancer drug carriers in the future.

Abstract
Non-thermal plasma has increasingly been used for surface modification of various materials as a novel green technology. In this study, we prepared potato starch nanocrystals (SNCs) assisted by dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology and investigated its multiscale structure, physicochemical properties and rheology. Plasma treatment did not change the morphology and crystalline pattern of SNCs but reduced the crystallinity. The amylose content, swelling power, gelatinization temperature, and apparent viscosity of SNCs decreased after the plasma process by depolymerizing the amylopectin branch chains and degrading SNCs molecules. Besides, plasma increased the rapidly digestible starch and resistant starch content. Changes in rheological properties of plasma treated SNCs suggested that the plasma process increased the flowing capacity. The effective structural and functional changes of plasma treated SNCs confirm that plasma technology has great potential for modification of SNCs.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the most widespread deadly diseases, following cardiovascular disease, worldwide. Chemotherapy is widely used in combination with surgery, hormone and radiation therapy to treat various cancers. However, chemotherapeutic drugs can cause severe side effects due to non-specific targeting, poor bioavailability, low therapeutic indices, and high dose requirements. Several drug carriers successfully overcome these issues and deliver drugs to the desired sites, reducing the side effects. Among various drug delivery systems, polysaccharide-based carriers that target only the cancer cells have been developed to overcome the toxicity of chemotherapeutics. Polysaccharides are non-toxic, biodegradable, hydrophilic biopolymers that can be easily modified chemically to improve the bioavailability and stability for delivering therapeutics into cancer tissues. Different polysaccharides, such as chitosan, alginates, cyclodextrin, pullulan, hyaluronic acid, dextran, guar gum, pectin, and cellulose, have been used in anti-cancer drug delivery systems. This review highlights the recent progress made in polysaccharides-based drug carriers in anti-cancer therapy.

Abstract
In recent years, starch nanoparticles (SNPs) have attracted growing attention due to their unique properties as a sustainable alternative to common nanomaterials since they are natural, renewable and biodegradable. SNPs can be obtained by the breakdown of starch granules through different techniques which include both physical and chemical methods. The final properties of the SNPs are strongly influenced by the synthesis method used as well as the operational conditions, where a controlled and monodispersed size is crucial for certain bioapplications. SNPs are considered to be a good vehicle to improve the controlled release of many bioactive compounds in different research fields due to their high biocompatibility, potential functionalization, and high surface/volume ratio. Their applications are frequently found in medicine, cosmetics, biotechnology, or the food industry, among others. Both the encapsulation properties as well as the releasing processes of the bioactive compounds are highly influenced by the size of the SNPs. In this review, a general description of the different types of SNPs (whole and hollow) synthesis methods is provided as well as on different techniques for encapsulating bioactive compounds, including direct and indirect methods, with application in several fields. Starches from different botanical sources and different bioactive compounds are compared with respect to the efficacy in vitro and in vivo. Applications and future research trends on SNPs synthesis have been included and discussed.

Abstract
Although nanotechnology-driven drug delivery systems are relatively new, they are rapidly evolving since the nanomaterials are deployed as effective means of diagnosis and delivery of assorted therapeutic agents to targeted intracellular sites in a controlled release manner. Nanomedicine and nanoparticulate drug delivery systems are rapidly developing as they play crucial roles in the development of therapeutic strategies for various types of cancer and malignancy. Nevertheless, high costs, associated toxicity and production of complexities are some of the critical barriers for their applications. Green nanomedicines have continually been improved as one of the viable approaches towards tumor drug delivery, thus making a notable impact on which considerably affect cancer treatment. In this regard, the utilization of natural and renewable feedstocks as a starting point for the fabrication of nanosystems can considerably contribute to the development of green nanomedicines. Nanostructures and biopolymers derived from natural and biorenewable resources such as proteins, lipids, lignin, hyaluronic acid, starch, cellulose, gum, pectin, alginate, and chitosan play vital roles in the development of cancer nanotherapy, imaging and management. This review uncovers recent investigations on diverse nanoarchitectures fabricated from natural and renewable feedstocks for the controlled/sustained and targeted drug/gene delivery systems against cancers including an outlook on some of the scientific challenges and opportunities in this field. Various important natural biopolymers and nanomaterials for cancer nanotherapy are covered and the scientific challenges and opportunities in this field are reviewed.

Abstract
In this study, a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) comprising poly (IA-co-cellulose-co-VSA-co-AA; ICVA) core-SAP (CSAP) was synthesized through radical polymerization using itaconic acid (IA), acrylic acid (AA), cellulose, and vinyl sulfonic acid (VSA) as monomers. The absorption performances and relative biodegradability of various compositions prepared by adjusting the amounts of cellulose and VSA with constant IA and AA content were compared. Increasing the cellulose content in CSAP contributed to improved biodegradation of the surface-crosslinked SAP (SSAP) and gel strength, although the free absorbency (FA) and centrifuge retention capacity (CRC) decreased. Increasing the VSA content resulted in strong anionicity, which enables the absorption of large amounts of water. Surface-crosslinking technology was applied to the CSAP synthesized with the optimal composition ratio to increase its absorption performance and gel strength. Improved performance of the synthesized SSAP (a CRC of 30.4 g/g, absorbency under load (AUL) of 23.3 g/g, and permeability of 55 s) was achieved by selecting the optimal surface-crosslinking treatment time and the amount of distilled water in the surface-crosslinking solution: as the latter was increased in the surface-crosslinking solution, the AUL and permeability of the SSAP were improved, and its biodegradability was found to be 54% compared to the 100% biodegradable cellulose hydrogel in the control group.

Abstract
The development of advanced adsorbents with fast adsorption rate, simple preparation, low cost, and high adsorption capacity is one of the most important topics for water purification. Herein, a novel and pollution-free adsorbent, three-dimensional nanoporous starch-based nanomaterial (3D-PSN), was prepared via sacrifice template method and functionalized for the first time in this work. Relevant characterization was performed through XRD, SEM, TGA, zeta potential analysis, FTIR, and XPS to confirm the formation of nanomaterials. Owing to its unique three-dimensional network nanostructure and abundant active sites, this adsorbent displayed outstanding adsorption properties for heavy metal ions removal, as high as 532.28 mg/g for Cd (II), 381.47 mg/g for Hg(II), 354.15 mg/g for Cu(II), 238.39 mg/g for Pb(II), completed within 30 min. In this process, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model appeared more consistent with the adsorption kinetic data, and the adsorption behavior complied with the Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption mechanism mainly replied on the ion-exchange reaction, as well as chemical complexation formation. This adsorbent has remarkable recyclability, exhibiting strong application prospects for water purification and environmental remediation.

Abstract
Enzymatic hydrolysis and self-assembly are considered promising methods for preparation of starch nanoparticles (SNPs) because they are environmentally friendly, and time- and cost-effective. These methods are based on the self-assembly of short-chain glucans released from the α-1,6 bonds in amylopectin. Since their discovery, many studies have described the structural and physicochemical properties of self-assembled SNPs. Self-assembled SNPs can be prepared by two methods: using only the soluble portion containing the short-chain glucans, or using the whole hydrolyzate including both insoluble and soluble fractions. Although the structural and physical properties of self-assembled SNPs can be attributed to the composition of the hydrolyzates that participate in self-assembly, this aspect has not yet been discussed. This review focuses on SNPs self-assembled with only soluble short-chain glucans and addresses their characteristics, including formation mechanisms as well as structural and physicochemical properties, compared with SNPs prepared with total hydrolyzates.

Abstract
The effect of repeated heat-moisture treatment (RHMT) on the structural characteristics of waxy maize starch nanocrystals was investigated. Compared with native waxy maize starch (WMS), waxy maize starch nanocrystals (WMSNs) changed the crystalline pattern from A-type to B-type, and displayed the lower crystallinity (RC), molecular order (MO), enthalpy (∆H) and double-helix (DH) content, indicating a reduction in the long- and short-range orders of starch molecules. Single heat-moisture treatment significantly increased values, including RC, MO, α (power law exponent obtained by SAXS), ∆H, DH, and the melting temperatures (To, Tp and Tc), while repeated heat-moisture treatment further increased values of these parameters except ∆H, indicating the reinforcement of the long- and short-range orders of WMSNs. In addition, repeated heat-moisture treatment also caused a gradual conversion from B-type to "A + B"-type (Cb, Cc to Ca polymorphs in sequence) and finally to A-type crystallites.

Abstract
The development of hollow nanoparticles has attracted widespread interest due to their potential commercial applications. This work aimed to prepare a novel hollow starch nanoparticles (HSNPs) from debranched waxy corn starch (DBS) via an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion templating method. The effects of different concentrations of DBS on the formation of HSNPs at 4 °C and 25 °C were investigated. The monodispersed HSNPs obtained with 0.5% concentrations of DBS at 25 °C had spherical shapes, ranging between 200 and 800 nm. HSNPs with relative crystallinities of 16.9%-29.7% exhibited V-type or B + V-type structures, which indicated that DBS at low concentrations (0.5%-2.0%) could recrystallize and concomitantly form starch-lipid complexes around emulsion droplets. This novel approach of preparing HSNPs is viable and simple. The developed HSNPs could have great potential for delivering drugs or active ingredients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Starch nanoparticles have become among the most interesting nanovehicles for drug delivery because of their relatively easy synthesis, biocompatibility, and numerous botanical sources. Starch nanoparticles obtained from green bananas were cross-linked with citric acid and loaded with β-carotene. RESULTS Mean particle size, encapsulation efficiency, and β-carotene release in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids and food simulants were studied. Cross-linked nanoparticles showed higher loading efficiency and encapsulation capacity, indicating that they can accommodate more molecules than their unmodified counterparts, while mathematical models showed a diffusion of released β-carotene into food simulant media. CONCLUSIONS Cross-linked nanoparticles showed more controlled release under gastric conditions, mainly in the simulated intestinal fluid, indicating that they are suitable as vehicles for intestine-specific targeting. This controlled released was also observed in food simulants, with lower release values in the more aqueous simulants. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In recent thirty years, protein-based nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention, and they are being widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical fields. Wheat glutenin, an important natural vegetable protein, has been demonstrated to be nutritive and biocompatible. This study aimed to develop a new type of redox-sensitive protein nanoparticles. The glutenin nanoparticles (GNPs) were synthesized with glutenin concentrations (0.082%, 0.5%, and 0.83%) through the adoption of an antisolvent titration technique and the use of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidative cross-linking for different periods. At a glutenin concentration of 0.83% and oxidation time of 20 h, the obtained GNPs were spherical in shape and approximately 100-300 nm in size, as measured by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The formation of disulfide was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The turbidity values of the GNP suspensions were decreased by half after the addition of β-mercaptoethanol. Nile blue A, a model hydrophilic substance, was entrapped in the GNPs with 77.67% loading efficiency. The newly developed GNPs can be used as redox-responsive carriers for delivering hydrophilic active substances.

Abstract
Functionality in nanoengineered materials has been usually explored on structural and chemical compositional aspects of matter that exist in such solid materials. It is well known that the absence of solid matter is also relevant and the existence of voids confined in the nanostructure of certain particles is no exception. Indeed, over the past decades, there has been great interest in exploring hollow nanostructured materials that besides the properties recognized in the dense particles also provide empty spaces, in the sense of condensed matter absence, as an additional functionality to be explored. As such, the chemical synthesis of hollow nanostructures has been driven not only for tailoring the size and shape of particles with well-defined chemical composition, but also to achieve control on the type of hollowness that characterize such materials. This review describes the state of the art on late developments concerning the chemical synthesis of hollow nanostructures, providing a number of examples of materials obtained by distinct strategies. It will be apparent by reading this progress report that the absence of solid matter determines the functionality of hollow nanomaterials for several technological applications.

Abstract
In recent years, nano carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have received increasing attention due to their properties such as small size, fluorescence emission, chemical stability, water solubility, easy synthesis, and the possibility of functionalization. CQDs are fluorescent 0D carbon nanostructures with sizes below 10 nm. The fluorescence in CQDs originates from two sources, the fluorescence emission from bandgap transitions of conjugated π-domains and fluorescence from surface defects. The CQDs can emit fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region which makes them appropriate for biomedical applications. The fluorescence in these structures can be tuned with respect to the excitation wavelength. The CQDs have found applications in different areas such as biomedicine, photocatalysis, photosensors, solar energy conversion, light emitting diodes (LEDs), etc. The biomedical applications of CQDs include bioimaging, drug delivery, gene delivery, and cancer therapy. The fluorescent CQDs have low toxicity and other exceptional physicochemical properties in comparison to heavy metals semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) which make them superior candidates for biomedical applications. In this review, the synthesis routes and optical properties of the CQDs are clarified and recent advances in CQDs biomedical applications in bioimaging (in vivo and in vitro), drug delivery, cancer therapy, their potential to pass blood-brain barrier (BBB), and gene delivery are discussed.

Abstract
Biopolymer-based nanohydrogels have great potential for various applications, including in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Herein, starch nanohydrogels were prepared for the first time via reverse emulsification coupled with internal gelation. The effects of starch type (normal corn, potato, and pea starches), amylose content, and gelation time on the structural, morphological, and physicochemical properties of starch nanohydrogels were investigated. The diameter of starch nanohydrogel particles was around 100 nm after 12 h of retrogradation time. The relative crystallinity and thermal properties of starch nanohydrogels increased gradually with an increasing amylose content and gelation time. The swelling behavior of starch nanohydrogels was dependent upon the amylose content, and the swelling ratios were between 2.0 and 14.0, with the pea starch nanogels exhibiting the lowest values and the potato starch nanogels exhibiting the highest values.

Abstract
Chagas disease is a public health problem, affecting about 7 million people worldwide. Benznidazole (BZN) is the main treatment option, but it has limited effectiveness and can cause severe adverse effects. Drug delivery through nanoparticles has attracted the interest of the scientific community aiming to improve therapeutic options. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of benznidazole-loaded calcium carbonate nanoparticles (BZN@CaCO3) on Trypanosoma cruzi strain Y. It was observed that BZN@CaCO3 was able to reduce the viability of epimastigote, trypomastigote and amastigote forms of T. cruzi with greater potency when compared with BZN. The amount of BZN necessary to obtain the same effect was up to 25 times smaller when loaded with CaCO3 nanoparticles. Also, it was observed that BZN@CaCO3 enhanced the selectivity index. Furthermore, the cell-death mechanism induced by both BZN and BZN@CaCO3 was evaluated, indicating that both substances caused necrosis and changed mitochondrial membrane potential.

Abstract
Novel biodegradable diselenide cross-linked starch-based hydrogels were synthesized via free radical copolymerization, which serve as stimuli-responsive drug release materials composed of starch chain backbones with an enzyme hydrolysis property and selenium-containing cross-linkers with a redox responsive cleavage property. Rhodamine B (RB) loaded starch-based hydrogels were prepared in order to investigate their stimuli-responsive release behaviours. In the presence of external redox agents, the enzyme stimuli as well as the mixture of the above stimuli, the prepared starch-based hydrogels exhibit controlled multi-responsive release behavior of RB. Overall, the merits of good biodegradation and multi-stimuli responsiveness make these kinds of starch-based hydrogels promising biomedical candidates for the realization of controlled drug delivery.
