A facile template approach to preparing stable NFC/Ag/polyaniline nanocomposites for imparting multifunctionality to paper

Advances in hybridized nanoarchitectures for improved oro-dental health

On a global note, oral health plays a critical role in improving the overall human health. In this vein, dental-related issues with dentin exposure often facilitate the risk of developing various oral-related diseases in gums and teeth. Several oral-based ailments include gums-associated (gingivitis or periodontitis), tooth-based (dental caries, root infection, enamel erosion, and edentulous or total tooth loss), as well as miscellaneous diseases in the buccal or oral cavity (bad breath, mouth sores, and oral cancer). Although established conventional treatment modalities have been available to improve oral health, these therapeutic options suffer from several limitations, such as fail to eradicate bacterial biofilms, deprived regeneration of dental pulp cells, and poor remineralization of teeth, resulting in dental emergencies. To this end, the advent of nanotechnology has resulted in the development of various innovative nanoarchitectured composites from diverse sources. This review presents a comprehensive overview of different nanoarchitectured composites for improving overall oral health. Initially, we emphasize various oral-related diseases, providing detailed pathological circumstances and their effects on human health along with deficiencies of the conventional therapeutic modalities. Further, the importance of various nanostructured components is emphasized, highlighting their predominant actions in solving crucial dental issues, such as anti-bacterial, remineralization, and tissue regeneration abilities. In addition to an emphasis on the synthesis of different nanostructures, various nano-therapeutic solutions from diverse sources are discussed, including natural (plant, animal, and marine)-based components and other synthetic (organic- and inorganic-) architectures, as well as their composites for improving oral health. Finally, we summarize the article with an interesting outlook on overcoming the challenges of translating these innovative platforms to clinics.

Size-Controlled Silver Nanoparticles Supported by Pyrolytic Carbon from Microcrystalline Cellulose

A facile method was developed for preparing size-controlled silver nanoparticles supported by pyrolytic carbon from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The pyrolysis of cellulose-AgNO3 mixture caused the oxidation of cellulose, resulting in carboxyl groups to which silver ions can bind firmly and act as nuclei for the deposition of silver nanoparticles. The structure and properties of the obtained nanocomposite were characterized by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results suggest that silver nanoparticles were integrated successfully and dispersed uniformly in the pyrolytic carbon matrix. The average particle size varied between 20 nm and 100 nm in correlation to the dose of silver nitrate and temperature of pyrolysis. The products showed high electric conductivity and strong antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Nature-inspired self-powered cellulose nanofibrils hydrogels with high sensitivity and mechanical adaptability

It is still a challenge to integrate high sensitivity, mechanical adaptability, and self-powered properties for hydrogels. Herein, we report a conductive polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel based on natural nanoclay and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The CNFs and PVA chains could construct a double network structure, resulting in a high mechanical composite hydrogel. Meanwhile, the nanoclay could be well dispersed and immobilized in the network of the hydrogel, thus improving mechanical adaptability of the hydrogel for curved and dynamic surfaces. Moreover, the conductive ions (Al³⁺) imparted the hydrogel with high conductivity (6.67 S m^-1) and gauge factor (1.17). Therefore, the composite hydrogel exhibited high sensitivity to tiny pressure changes, enabling recognition of the complicated sounding and handwriting. More importantly, the composite hydrogel possessed self-powered property, which could generate an output voltage of up to 78 mV. In summary, the multi-functional composite hydrogel may have giant applications in artificial electronic skins or wearable devices.

Electromagnetic radiation driving of volume changes in nanocomposites made of a thermosensitive hydrogel polymerized around conducting polymer nanoparticles

Polymeric nanocomposites were obtained by the formation of a thermosensitive hydrogel matrix around conducting polymer (CP) nanoparticles. The CP is able to absorb electromagnetic radiation which is converted into heat and induces the phase transition of the surrounding hydrogel. The method chosen to form the hydrogel is the free radical polymerization of a copolymer (N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropano sulfonic acid (AMPS), PNIPAM-co-2% AMPS) in the presence of bisacrylamide as the crosslinker. The nanoparticles are polypyrrole nanospheres (PPy NP), polyaniline nanofibers (PANI NF), and polyaniline nanospheres (PANI NP). The morphology of the composites was studied using SEM microscopy and the percentage composition of each material was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The swelling equilibrium capacity and rate are clearly affected by the nanoparticle shape and nature. However, the nanocomposites LCST are similar to that of the matrix. Upon RF irradiation, the three nanocomposites increase the temperature and reach the LCST after 320 seconds of irradiation (320 kJ). Upon MW application, the local temperature reaches the LCST after only 30 s (21 kJ), resulting in a MW more effective than RF to drive the transition. These results demonstrate that the proposed materials are useful as a remotely driven actuator.

A novel synthetic method of photothermally activated nanocomposites by in situ formation of hydrogel matrixes around dispersed conducting polymer nanoparticles is described.

Highly conductive carbon nanotubes and flexible cellulose nanofibers composite membranes with semi-interpenetrating networks structure

Highly conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and flexible cellulose nanofibers (CNF) membranes with semi-interpenetrating networks structure were fabricated using the typical paper-making method, which was simple and cost-effective. The Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to estimate the morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability of the membranes. The mechanical, optical, and electrical properties of the membranes were characterized with a uniaxial tensile testing machine, ultraviolet visible spectroscope, and digital multimeter, respectively. The results indicated that the membranes containing 10 wt% of MWCNTs showed a high conductivity value of 37.6 S/m, and the sheet resistances of the membranes were stable at different bending states. Furthermore, we demonstrated the electrical features of membrane-based capacitive pressure sensors based on CNF/MWCNTs. The proposed method for fabricating CNF/MWCNTs membranes can simplify the production process and have great practical potential in various electronics applications such as touch screens.
