Influence of reaction media on synthesis of dialdehyde cellulose/GO composites and their adsorption performances on heavy metals

Dialdehyde carbohydrates - Advanced functional materials for biomedical applications

Dialdehyde carbohydrates (DCs) have found applications in a wide range of biomedical field due to their great versatility, biocompatibility/biodegradability, biological properties, and controllable chemical/physical characteristics. The presence of dialdehyde groups in carbohydrate structure allows cross-linking of DCs to form versatile architectures serving as interesting matrices for biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine). Recently, DCs have noticeably contributed to the development of diverse physical forms of advanced functional biomaterials i.e., bulk architectures (hydrogels, films/coatings, or scaffolds) and nano/-micro formulations. We underline here the current scientific knowledge on DCs, and demonstrate their potential and newly developed biomedical applications. Specifically, an update on the synthesis approach and functional/bioactive attributes is provided, and the selected in vitro/in vivo studies are reviewed comprehensively as examples of the latest progress in the field. Moreover, safety concerns, challenges, and perspectives towards the application of DCs are deliberated.

High nitrogen content bimolecular co-functionalized graphene nanoflakes for hypertoxic Cr(VI) removal: Insights into adsorption behavior and mechanisms

The proven high carcinogenicity to humans and high destructive force to the environment determine the extreme urgency of eliminating hypertoxic Cr(VI) in water bodies. Herein, a route of room temperature synthesis and secondary grafting was proposed to fabricate graphene oxide-based nanoadsorbent co-functionalized with polydopamine and branched polyethyleneimine (GOPP) to remove Cr(VI). The flexible decoration of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine on GO flakes could gradually enhance the amount of N-containing functional groups and realize selective removal of Cr(VI) with the maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 564.7 mg/g, displaying a significantly high separation factor against alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and other transition metal ions. Various combination mechanisms, such as electrostatic attraction, reduction, complexation, and hydrogen bonding, were demonstrated to be involved in the adsorption process of Cr(VI) by XPS, ESP, and DFT calculations. And the interaction energies of the five protonated configurations of primary amine, tertiary amine, secondary amine, imine, and secondary amine on the ring with HCrO4- were: -22.66, -12.08, -24.92, -24.26, -27.64 kcal/mol. In the actual industrial wastewater study, a Cr(VI) removal rate of 85.8% was realized. This work provided a viable idea for the elimination of Cr(VI) and was expected to be applied in the field of wastewater treatment.

High Internal Phase Emulsion Stabilization through Restricted Interdrop Fusion across Water Drainage Channels

This study introduces a promising approach to stabilize high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) in which droplets are enveloped by octadecane (C18)-grafted bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF_diC18), which are mainly surrounded by carboxylate anions and hydrophobically modified with C18 alkyl chains. For this purpose, BCNF_diC18, in which two octadecyl chains were grafted onto each of several cellulose unit rings on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidized BCNFs, was fabricated using the Schiff base reaction. The wettability of BCNF_diC18 was adjusted by controlling the amount of the grafted C18 alkyl chain. Interfacial rheological analysis revealed that BCNF_diC18 enhanced the membrane modulus at the oil-water interface. We figured out that such a resilient interfacial membrane substantially prevented interdrop fusion across the water drainage channel formed between the jammed oil droplets, which was confirmed theoretically using the modified Stefan-Reynolds equation. These findings highlight that the use of surfactants in the form of nanofibers to form a rigid interfacial film plays a key role in hindering the interfusion of the internal phase and the collapse of the emulsion, which is essential for HIPE stabilization.

A non-heat-source process for preparing graphene oxide with low energy consumption

As the most widely used method for preparing graphene oxide (GO), Hummers' method always involves a key step, that is adding water to concentrated sulfuric acid. We found that if this process is cancelled, the oxidation degree of GO will be significantly reduced. This means that the heat released during concentrated sulfuric acid dilution will promote further oxidation of GO. In this paper, we fully utilize the heat released during concentrated sulfuric acid dilution to develop a new non-heat-source process without any low-/high-temperature auxiliar, exponentially reducing the energy consumption and largely avoiding the frequent temperature control. The result shows that GO prepared by Hummers' method and that prepared by the proposed process show a similar structure, composition, morphology, and defect degree. Meanwhile, the corresponding reduced GO (rGO) obtained after reduction shows similar capacitive behavior. Their specific capacitances are 243.6 F g^-1 and 240.3 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1, respectively, and they both have a long-term cycling performance (with a 100% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 30 A g^-1). This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of GO with low energy consumption.

Efficient removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media by unmodified and modified nanodiamonds

This article deals with the adsorption performances of the unmodified nanodiamond (ND) and thermally oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND) for the removal of different heavy metal ions such as Fe (III), Cu (II), Cr (VI), and Cd (II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of the ions onto adsorbents are higher and follow the order: Ox-ND-3 > Ox-ND-1.5 > ND, which is consistent with their surface areas, zeta potentials, and the presence of carboxyl groups, suggesting that electrostatic attractions between the positive metal ions and the negatively charged adsorbents are the predominant adsorption mechanisms. Adsorption capacities of these adsorbents were found to be 26.8, 31.3, and 45.7 mg/g for Fe (III), 25.2, 30.5, and 44.5 mg/g for Cu (II), 33.6, 44.1, and 55.9 mg/g for Cr (VI), and 40.9, 52.9, and 67.9 mg/g for Cd (II) over ND, Ox-ND-1.5, and Ox-ND-3, respectively. The impact of various operating parameters such as agitation time, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, pH solution, adsorbent dosage, and coexistence of the metal ions on the adsorption performance of Ox-ND-3 towards Cd (II) ions along with the batch adsorption experiments were performed. The equilibrium was reached in 120 min and adsorption data were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic as well as the Freundlich isotherm models. Adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, while the maximum removal efficiency of Cd (II) ions occurred at pH of 6.9 and at 4 g/L dosage. These findings demonstrated that thermally oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND) can be a versatile adsorbent to remove the Cd (II) ions from wastewater.

A Colorimetric Ag+ Probe for Food Real-Time Visual Monitoring

Monitoring food quality throughout the food supply chain is critical to ensuring global food safety and minimizing food losses. Here we find that simply by mixing an aqueous solution of sugar-stabilized Ag+ and amines in an open vessel leads to the generation of Ag NPs and an intelligent evaluation system based on a colorimetric Ag+ probe is developed for real-time visual monitoring of food freshness. The self-assembly reaction between methylamine (MA) generated during meat storage and the colorimetric Ag+ probe produces different color changes that indicate changes in the quality of the meat. The colorimetric Ag+ probe was integrated into food packaging systems for real-time monitoring of chilled broiler meat freshness. The proposed evaluation system provides a versatile approach for detecting biogenic amines and monitoring chilled broiler meat freshness and it has the advantages of high selectivity, real-time and on-site measurements, sensitivity, economy, and safety and holds great public health significance.

The Removal of Pb2+ from Aqueous Solution by Using Navel Orange Peel Biochar Supported Graphene Oxide: Characteristics, Response Surface Methodology, and Mechanism

The value-added utilization of waste resources to synthesize functional materials is important to achieve the environmentally sustainable development. In this paper, the biochar supported graphene oxide (BGO) materials were prepared by using navel orange peel and natural graphite. The optimal adsorption parameters were analyzed by response surface methodology under the conditions of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and rotating speed. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic model fitting experiments were carried out according to the optimal adsorption parameters, and the mechanism of BGO adsorption of Pb2+ was explained using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM-EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Compared with virgin biochar, the adsorption capacity of Pb2+ on biochar supported graphene oxide was significantly increased. The results of response surface methodology optimization design showed that the order of influence on adsorption of Pb2+ was solution pH > adsorbent dosage > rotating speed. The optimal conditions were as follows: solution pH was 4.97, rotating speed was 172.97 rpm, and adsorbent dosage was 0.086 g. In the adsorption−desorption experiment, the desorption efficiency ranged from 54.3 to 63.3%. The process of Pb2+ adsorption by BGO is spontaneous and endothermic, mainly through electrostatic interaction and surface complexation. It is a heterogeneous adsorption process with heterogeneous surface, including surface adsorption, external liquid film diffusion, and intra-particle diffusion.

Multifunctional Cellulose and Cellulose-Based (Nano) Composite Adsorbents

In recent years, faced with the improvement of environmental quality problems, cellulose and cellulose-based (nano) composites have attracted great attention as adsorbents. In this review article, we first report the recent progress of modification and functionalization of cellulose adsorbents. In addition, the adsorbents produced by the modification and functionalization of carboxymehyl cellulose are also introduced. Moreover, the cellulose-based (nano) composites as adsorbents are reviewed in detail. Finally, the development prospect of cellulose and cellulose-based (nano) composites is studied in the field of the environment. In this review article, a critical comment is given based on our knowledge. It is believed that these biomass adsorbents will play an increasingly important role in the field of the environment.

Bridging-induced densification strategy based on biomass-derived aldehyde tanning integrated with terminal Al(III) crosslinking towards high-performance chrome-free leather production

Chrome-free leather manufacturing has been acknowledged as a desirable option to eliminate potential environmental and human health risks of conventional chrome tanning. This work applied a sequential bridging-induced densification strategy to produce high-performance chrome-free leather with high crosslinking density derived from the biomass-derived aldehyde (BAT) crosslinking (BAT tanning of leather), followed by terminal Al(III) crosslinking (TAC). The TAC conditions for BAT tanned leather were optimized and the results suggested that the optimized conditions were as follows: the fixation pH was 4.2, the pre-penetration time was 180 min, the fixation temperature was 40 °C, and the dosage of the aluminum tanning agent (ATA) was 0.5% (based on Al₂O₃). Under the optimized conditions, the resultant BAT-TAC crust leather exhibited favorable overall performances compared with BAT crust leather in terms of higher hydrothermal stability, mechanical strengths, more pleasant uniform color, and comparable smooth grain surface. The obtained high-performance chrome-free leather is scalable, providing an avenue for designing and rationalizing other engineering technology towards high-performance eco-leather production.

Amelioration of adsorptive efficacy by synergistic assemblage of functionalized graphene oxide with esterified cellulose nanofibers for mitigation of pharmaceutical waste

An effort has been undertaken for valorization of surplus biomass to synthesize sustainable and commercially competitive nanoadsorbents utilizing green synthetic strategies. This study encompasses a pioneering research on the comparative adsorption analysis of different modified forms of graphene oxide (GO) combined with functionalized cellulose nanofibers (CNF) derived from surplus biomass for elimination of noxious drug species from aqueous environment with a comprehensive study for evaluating the effect of loading percentage of functionalized GO. Characteristic assessments of the prepared nanocomposites were performed using FT-IR studies, powder XRD studies, FESEM analysis, EDS analysis and BET studies. The prepared nanohybrids were evaluated for their adsorptive performance for elimination of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin and their performance was optimized in terms of adsorbent loading, pH and initial drug concentration. Further, investigation of adsorbent properties and the adsorption process was undertaken by studying different kinetic and isotherm models of adsorption. The adsorption potential of functionalized CNF was substantially ameliorated through its facile assemblage with functionalized GO. The experimental outcomes revealed that 20 wt% loading of carboxylated graphene oxide within the perforated surface of esterified cellulose nanofibres exhibited best adsorption performance with maximum removal capacity of 45.04 mg g^-1 and 85.30 mg g^-1 for ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, respectively. The outstanding regenerability and reusability of nanocomposites present tremendous potential for development of inexpensive and sustainable sorbent materials for managing pharmaceutical pollution. Literature presents scarce data and insufficient number of reports which thoroughly compares the role of differently functionalized GO to potentiate the adsorptive performance of biomass based nanocellulose and its broad application prospects in wastewater remediation. This marks the novelty of the present investigation.

Fabrication of MNPs/rGO/PMMA Composite for the Removal of Hazardous Cr(VI) from Tannery Wastewater through Batch and Continuous Mode Adsorption

Herein, we report the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) composite (MNPs/rGO/PMMA) as adsorbent via an in situ fabrication strategy and, in turn, the application for adsorptive removal and recovery of Cr(VI) from tannery wastewater. The composite material was characterized via XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses. Under batch mode experiments, the composite achieved maximum adsorption of the Cr(VI) ion (99.53 ± 1.4%, i.e., 1636.49 mg of Cr(VI)/150 mg of adsorbent) at pH 2, adsorbent dose of 150 mg/10 mL of solution and 30 min of contact time. The adsorption process was endothermic, feasible and spontaneous and followed a pseudo-2nd order kinetic model. The Cr ions were completely desorbed (99.32 ± 2%) from the composite using 30 mL of NaOH solution (2M); hence, the composite exhibited high efficiency for five consecutive cycles without prominent loss in activity. The adsorbent was washed with distilled water and diluted HCl (0.1M), then dried under vacuum at 60 °C for reuse. The XRD analysis confirmed the synthesis and incorporation of magnetic iron oxide at 2θ of 30.38°, 35.5°, 43.22° and 57.36°, respectively, and graphene oxide (GO) at 25.5°. The FTIR analysids revealed that the composite retained the configurations of the individual components, whereas the SEM analysis indicated that the magnetic Fe3O4-NPs (MNPs) dispersed on the surface of the PMMA/rGO sheets. To anticipate the behavior of breakthrough, the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were applied to fixed-bed column data, which indicated good agreement with the experimental data. This study evaluates useful reference information for designing a cost-effective and easy-to-use adsorbent for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Therefore, it can be envisioned as an alternative approach for a variety of unexplored industrial-level operations.

Amidation modified waste polystyrene foam as an efficient recyclable adsorbent for organic dyes removal

Modifying environmentally harmful waste polystyrene foam as an efficient recyclable adsorbent for organic dyes is important. Amidation modified polystyrene (PS-SD) was prepared by the Friedel-Crafts reaction and N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) dehydration condensation reaction of waste polystyrene foam. PS-SD had highly efficient removal performance for organic dyes in large volume water sample solutions, and equilibrium was achieved in 0.5 h. The maximum adsorption capacities for Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) were 881.62 and 1,880.91 mg/g, respectively, at room temperature according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R² > 0.99). The kinetic data of the two dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The removal percentage remained high (>85%) after eight filtration-regeneration cycles. Experimental results showed that PS-SD was an excellent adsorbent for water treatment with high recyclability and long life.

Adsorption-photocatalysis performance of polyaniline/dicarboxyl acid cellulose@graphene oxide for dye removal

A novel 3-D biopolymer-based adsorption-photocatalytic composite, polyaniline/dicarboxyl acid cellulose@graphene oxide was synthesized and was employed to remove the reactive brilliant red K-2G from aqueous solution. The addition of dicarboxyl acid cellulose could improve the morphology, structure, stability and dispersity of the nanocomposite, thus providing excellent adsorption and photocatalysis performance to the product. Batch of experiments were conducted in two scenarios: adsorption followed by photocatalysis process and simultaneous adsorption-photocatalysis process. For the first scenario, adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 25 min, the expected adsorption capacity was 447.0 mg·g^-1; the subsequent photocatalysis process was carried out under light irradiation and the removal capacity could further improve to 729.0 mg·g^-1 under equilibrium state (about 180 min). For the simultaneous adsorption-photocatalytic process, the removal capacity was about 558.1 mg·g^-1 at about 25 min and the total removal capacity could reach to 733.3 mg·g^-1 under equilibrium state. PANI-DCC@GO exhibited excellent reusability and had potential in the treatment of dyes polluted wastewater.

Sustainable dialdehyde polysaccharides as versatile building blocks for fabricating functional materials: An overview

Dialdehyde polysaccharide (DAP), containing multiple aldehyde groups, can react with materials having amino groups via Schiff base crosslinking. Besides, it can also react with materials having carbonyl/hydroxyl groups via aldol reactions. Based on these intriguing properties, DAPs can be employed as versatile building blocks to fabricate functional materials used in biomedical field, wastewater treatment, leather manufacture, and electrochemistry field. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in fabricating biomaterials, adsorbents, leather tanning agents, and electrochemical materials based on DAPs. The basic fabricating strategy and principle of these materials and their performances are overall summarized, along with a discussion of associated scalability challenges, technological strategies to overcome them, and the prospect for commercial translations of this versatile material. Blending the versatility of DAP with material science and technological advances can provide a powerful tool to develop more DAP-based functional materials in a scalable way.

Effect of graphene between photoanode and sensitizer on the intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer process

The main goal of this work is to investigate the effects of a graphene layer between the photosensitive layer and semiconductor substrates on the electron transport performance of dye-sensitized solar cells from the perspective of intramolecular arrangement and interfaces. The benzothiadiazole sensitizer YKP-88 is used as the photosensitive layer and the influence of the graphene layer on the short-circuit current density (J_sc) and open-circuit voltage (V_oc) is also discussed by exploring the frontier molecular orbitals, intramolecular charge transfer, weak interaction, interfacial electron dynamic propagations and other microscopic parameters after the anchoring of the graphene layer. The results demonstrate that the graphene layer can accelerate the electron injection of dye molecules into the semiconductor substrate, which not only has a qualitative reduction in injection time, but also has a qualitative change in the increase of the injection amount. In addition, it is also found that the graphene layer increases the stereoscopic effect, the absorption of long wavelength (>700 nm) photon flu and the amount of electron injection into the photoanode, which benefits the intramolecular charge transfer and increases the J_sc and V_oc of solar cells. The combination of intermolecular and interfacial perspectives indicates that the appropriate configuration of graphene layers can effectively improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.
