Color-switchable hybrid dots/hydroxyethyl cellulose ink for anti-counterfeiting applications

Coffee-Ring Mediated Thinning and Thickness-Dependent Dewetting Modes in Printed Polymer Droplets Coupled with Assembly of Quantum Dots for Anti-Counterfeiting

Molecular transport processes in printed polymer droplets hold enormous importance for understanding wetting phenomena and designing systems in applications such as encoding, electronics, photonics, and sensing. This paper studies thickness-dependent dewetting modes that are activated by thermal annealing and driven by interfacial interactions within microscopically confined polymeric features. The printing of poly(2-vinylpyridine) is performed in a regime where coffee-ring effects lead to strong thinning of the central region of the deposit. Thermal annealing leads to two different modes of dewetting that depend on the thickness of the central region. Mode I refers to the formation of randomly positioned small features surrounded by large hemispherical ones located along the periphery of the printed features and occurs when the central regions are thin. Observed at large central thicknesses, Mode II mediates significant molecular transport from edges toward the center of the printed droplet with thermal annealing and forms a hemispherical feature from the initial ring-like deposit. The selective adsorption of red, green, and blue emitting quantum dots over the poly(2-vinylpyridine) results in photoluminescent patterns. The selective assembly of photoluminescent quantum dots over patterned surfaces leads to deterministic and stochastic features beneficial to creating security labels for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Flexible transparent and hydrophobic SiNCs/PDMS coatings for anti-counterfeiting applications

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have attracted considerable attention in many advanced applications due to silicon's high natural abundance, low toxicity, and impressive optical properties. However, little attention has been paid to fluorescence anti-counterfeiting applications based on lipophilic silicon nanocrystals. Moreover, it is also a challenge to fabricate aging-resistant anti-counterfeiting coatings based on silicon nanocrystals. Herein, this paper presents a demonstration of aging-resistant fluorescent anti-counterfeiting coatings based on red fluorescent silicon nanocrystals. In this work, lipophilic silicon nanocrystals (De-SiNCs) with red fluorescence were prepared first by thermal hydrosilylation between hydrogen-terminated silicon nanocrystals (H-SiNCs) and 1-decene. Subsequently, a new SiNCs/PDMS coating (De-SiNCs/DV) was fabricated by dispersing De-SiNCs into reinforcing PDMS composites with vinyl-capped silicone resin. Interestingly, the De-SiNCs/DV composites exhibit superior transparency (up to 85%) in the visible light range, outstanding fluorescence stabilities with an average lifetime of 20.59 μs under various conditions including acidic/alkaline environments, different organic solvents, high-humidity environments and UV irradiation. Meanwhile, the encapsulation of De-SiNCs is beneficial to enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal stability of De-SiNCs/DV composites. Additionally, the De-SiNCs/DV coating exhibits an excellent anti-counterfeiting effect on cotton fabrics when used as an ink in screen-printing. These findings pave the way for developing innovative flexible multifunctional anti-counterfeiting coatings in the future.

Recent advances in photoresponsive printing inks for security encoding applications

Counterfeiting of banknotes, important documents, and branded goods continues to be a major worldwide problem for governments, businesses, and consumers. This problem has serious financial, security, and health implications. Due to their stability for printing on various substrates, the photochromic anticounterfeiting inks have received important interest. There have been various photochromic agents, such as polymer nanoparticles, quantum and carbon dots, and organic and inorganic fluorophores and luminophores, which have been broadly used for antiforging applications. In comparison to organic agents, inorganic photochromic materials have better stability under reversible/long-term light illumination. Recently, the remarkable optical characteristics and chemical stability of photoluminescent and photochromic agents have led to their extensive usage anticounterfeiting products. There have been also several strategies to tackle the rising problem of counterfeiting. Both of solvent-based and water-based inks have been developed for security encoding purposes. Additionally, the printing methods, including screen printing, labeling, stamping, inkjet printing, and handwriting, that have been used to apply anticounterfeiting inks onto various surfaces are discussed. The limitations of photoluminescent and photochromic agents and the potential for their future preparation to combat counterfeiting were discussed. This review would benefit academic researchers and industrial developers who are interested in the area of security printing.

Uncovering the Recent Progress of CNC-Derived Chirality Nanomaterials: Structure and Functions

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), as a renewable resource, with excellent mechanical performance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and unique optical performance, is becoming a novel candidate for the development of smart material. Herein, the recent progress of CNC-based chirality nanomaterials is uncovered, mainly covering structure regulations and function design. Undergoing a simple evaporation process, the cellulose nanorods can spontaneously assemble into chiral nematic films, accompanied by a vivid structural color. Various film structure-controlling strategies, including assembly means, physical modulation, additive engineering, surface modification, geometric structure regulation, and external field optimization, are summarized in this work. The intrinsic correlation between structure and performance is emphasized. Next, the applications of CNC-based nanomaterials is systematically reviewed. Layer-by-layer stacking structure and unique optical activity endow the nanomaterials with wide applications in the mineralization, bone regeneration, and synthesis of mesoporous materials. Besides, the vivid structural color broadens the functions in anti-counterfeiting engineering, synthesis of the shape-memory and self-healing materials. Finally, the challenges for the CNC-based nanomaterials are proposed.

Investigating the Presence of Falsified and Poor-Quality Fixed-Dose Combination Artemether-Lumefantrine Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms in Kumasi, Ghana

Artemether-lumefantrine (AL) is a highly effective and commonly used Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) for treating uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including drug-resistant strains. However, ineffective regulatory systems in resource-limited settings can lead to the infiltration of poor-quality and counterfeit antimalarial medicines into the pharmaceutical supply chain, causing treatment failures, prolonged illness, and disease progression. The objective of the study was to assess the quality of selected brands of fixed-dose combination (FDC) AL tablets and suspensions marketed in Kumasi, Ghana. A total of fourteen brands of FDC AL medicines, comprising eight tablets and six suspensions were purchased from various retail pharmacy outlets in Kumasi, Ghana. All samples were subjected to thorough visual inspection as a quick means of checking quality through meticulous observation of the packaging or dosage form. The quality parameters of the tablets were determined using uniformity of weight, hardness, friability, and disintegration tests. Suspensions were assessed based on pH and compared with the British Pharmacopeia (BP) standard. The samples were then analyzed for drug content (assay) using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). All the tablet samples conformed to BP specification limits for uniformity of weight (deviation of less than ± 5%), hardness (4.0-10 kg/mm2), friability (<1%), and disintegration time (<15 minutes). The active pharmaceutical ingredients' quantitative assay demonstrated that all the tablets met the BP specifications (90-110%). The results of the pH studies showed that out of the six brands of suspension investigated, five (83.3%) were compliant with the official specification for pH, while one (16.7%) failed the requirement. Unlike the tablet brands, drug content analysis of the six suspensions showed that two (33.3%) were substandard. The artemether and lumefantrine contents in these failed suspensions were variable (artemether: 81.31%-116.76%; lumefantrine: 80.35%-99.71%). The study results indicate that most of the tested products met the required quality standards, demonstrating satisfactory drug content and other quality specifications. The presence of substandard drugs underscores the necessity for robust pharmacovigilance and surveillance systems to eliminate counterfeit and substandard drugs from the Ghanaian market.

Luminescent Mechanism and Anti-Counterfeiting Application of Hydrophilic, Undoped Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Silicon Nanocrystals

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have attracted extensive attention in many advanced applications due to silicon's high natural abundance, low toxicity, and impressive optical properties. However, these applications are mainly focused on fluorescent SiNCs, little attention is paid to SiNCs with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their relative applications, especially water-dispersed ones. Herein, this work presents water-dispersible RTP SiNCs (UA-SiNCs) and their optical applications. The UA-SiNCs with a uniform particle size of 2.8 nm are prepared by thermal hydrosilylation between hydrogen-terminated SiNCs (H-SiNCs) and 10-undecenoic acid (UA). Interestingly, the resultant UA-SiNCs can exhibit tunable long-lived RTP with an average lifetime of 0.85 s. The RTP feature of the UA-SiNCs is confirmed to the n-π* transitions of their surface C═O groups. Subsequently, new dual-modal emissive UA-SiNCs-based ink is fabricated by blending with sodium alginate (SA) as the binder. The customized anticounterfeiting labels are also prepared on cellulosic substrates by screen-printing technique. As expected, UA-SiNCs/SA ink exhibits excellent practicability in anticounterfeiting applications. These findings will trigger the rapid development of RTP SiNCs, envisioning enormous potential in future advanced applications such as high-level anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and so forth.

One-step hydrothermal method synthesized pH-dependent carbon dots for multistage anti-counterfeiting

Work to combat counterfeiting has always been crucial to defending the interests of the public. The usual anti-counterfeiting marks are now fundamental and easy to imitate. Therefore, it is more beneficial to anti-counterfeiting work to develop an anti-counterfeiting mark with more variations to make forgery more difficult. Due to its exceptional stability and fluorescence variability, carbon dots (CDs), a newly developed fluorescent material, offer a wide range of potential applications in anti-counterfeiting. However, there currently needs to be more CD applications in multi-level anti-counterfeiting, and additional issues include high cost and environmental contamination. Therefore, considering the problems of green environmental protection and cost, CDs with excellent green (530 nm) and blue (475 nm, 486 nm) luminescence properties were prepared by a one-step reaction of m-phenylenediamine and glucose. The average fluorescence lifespan is longer than 5 ns, and the optimal quantum yield can reach 37%. Due to the large number of protonated amino groups and surface carboxyl functional groups, the prepared carbon dots exhibit green and blue fluorescence emission modes under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. Based on this situation, we produced CD ink and successfully used it for multi-level anti-counterfeiting.

Food-Grade Physically Unclonable Functions

Counterfeit products in the pharmaceutical and food industries have posed an overwhelmingly increasing threat to the health of individuals and societies. An effective approach to prevent counterfeiting is the attachment of security labels directly on drugs and food products. This approach requires the development of security labels composed of safely digestible materials. In this study, we present the fabrication of security labels entirely based on the use of food-grade materials. The key idea proposed in this study is the exploitation of food-grade corn starch (CS) as an encoding material based on the microscopic dimensions, particulate structure, and adsorbent characteristics. The strong adsorption of a food colorant, erythrosine B (ErB), onto CS results in fluorescent CS@ErB microparticles. Randomly positioned CS@ErB particles can be obtained simply by spin-coating from aqueous solutions of tuned concentrations followed by transfer to an edible gelatin film. The optical and fluorescence microscopy images of randomly positioned particles are then used to construct keys for a physically unclonable function (PUF)-based security label. The performance of PUFs evaluated by uniformity, uniqueness, and randomness analysis demonstrates the strong promise of this platform. The biocompatibility of the fabricated PUFs is confirmed with assays using murine fibroblast cells. The extremely low-cost and sustainable security primitives fabricated from off-the-shelf food materials offer new routes in the fight against counterfeiting.

Water-stable, biocompatible, and highly luminescent perovskite nanocrystals-embedded fiber-based paper for anti-counterfeiting applications

In this study, we present a promising and facile approach toward the fabrication of non-toxic, water-stable, and eco-friendly luminescent fiber paper composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer and CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ core-shell perovskite nanocrystals. PCL-perovskite fiber paper was fabricated using a conventional electrospinning process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly revealed incorporation of CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ nanocrystals in the fibers, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that incorporation of CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ nanocrystals did not affect the surface and diameter of the PCL-perovskite fibers. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle measurements have demonstrated that the PCL-perovskite fibers exhibit excellent thermal and water stability. The fabricated PCL-perovskite fiber paper exhibited a bright green emission centered at 520 nm upon excitation by ultra-violet (UV) light (374 nm). We have demonstrated that fluorescent PCL-perovskite fiber paper is a promising candidate for anti-counterfeiting applications because various patterns can be printed on the paper, which only become visible after exposure to UV light at 365 nm. Cell proliferation tests revealed that the PCL-perovskite fibers are cytocompatibility. Consequently, they may be suitable for biocompatible anti-counterfeiting. The present study reveals that PCL-perovskite fibers may pave way toward next generation biomedical probe and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Design of a biomimetic cellulose nanofibre-based double information encryption sensor for fingerprint imaging

The development of double encryption system enables information to switch reversibly between "False" and "True", which helps to ensure information security in the transmission process. Herein, a biomimetic cellulose nanofibre-based double information encryption sensor (CNF-DIES) with an excellent pH response and fluorescence colour-switching performance was prepared with fluorescein isothiocyanate and protoporphyrin IX modified acetylated cellulose nanofibres (ACNF) as the pH response switch and background, respectively. Interestingly, with the addition of cellulose, CNF-DIES can be regarded as both a dye and an ink binder, which can realize direct writing function. The fluorescein grafted to ACNF guaranteed the stability of writing and avoided the "coffee ring" phenomenon. The handwriting written by CNF-DIES processes excellent light/pH double encryption performance. Besides, the film prepared by CNF-DIES can realize high resolution fingerprint imaging. This work demonstrated a strategy for pH-responsive colour-tunable materials for sensors and double information encryption.

Water-borne, durable and multicolor silicon nanoparticles/sodium alginate inks for anticounterfeiting applications

Recently, water-borne fluorescent inks have attracted extensive attention in anti-counterfeiting applications due to their convenient implementation and eco-friendliness. However, due to poor service durability, the latent authorization information from the inks is easily damaged, and even disappears when encountering water. Moreover, most of the existing fluorescent inks are monochromic, toxic, and allergic to skin, thus are unsuitable for their sustainability during real-life applications. Herein, this work presents environment-friendly, durable, and multicolor fluorescent anti-counterfeiting silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs)/sodium alginate (SA) inks. The multicolor SiNPs are synthesized by a one-pot method with defined morphologies and optical properties. Subsequently, SA is employed as the binder to prepare the fluorescent inks with optimized rheological properties. Practicability results show that the SiNPs/SA inks not only exhibit excellent printability, but also impart authentic information with superior covert performance. More notably, spraying solution of calcium dichloride can further improve fluorescent fastnesses of the SiNPs/SA inks by ionic crosslinking.

Cellulose as an Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Material for Optical Anticounterfeiting Applications: An Up-to-Date Appraisal

The falsification of documents, currency, pharmaceuticals, branded goods, clothing, food products, and packaging leads to severe consequences. Counterfeited products can not only pose health risks to consumers but also cause substantial economic losses that can negatively impact the global markets. Unfortunately, most anticounterfeiting strategies are easily duplicated due to rapid technological advancements. Therefore, innovative and cost-effective antiforgery techniques that can offer superior multilevel security features are continuously sought after. Due to the ever-growing global awareness of environmental pollution, renewable and eco-friendly native biopolymers are garnering wide attention in anticounterfeiting applications. This review highlights the potential use of cellulose-based eco-friendly materials to combat the counterfeiting of goods. The initial section of the review focuses on the structure, properties, and chemical modifications of cellulose as a sustainable biomaterial. Further, the topical developments reported on cellulose and nanocellulose-based materials used as fluorescent security inks, films, and papers for achieving protection against counterfeiting are presented. The studies suggest the convenient use of celluose and modified cellulose materials for promising optical antiforgery applications. Furthermore, the scope for future research developments is also discussed based on the current critical challenges in the fabrication of cellulose-based materials and their anticounterfeit applications.

Photoluminescent Polymer Nanoparticles Based on Oxazolidine Derivatives for Authentication and Security Marking of Confidential Notes

Colloidal materials have widely been used to develop innovative anticounterfeiting nanoinks for information encryption. Latex nanoparticles based on methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) bearing hydroxyl functional groups were synthesized via semicontinuous miniemulsion polymerization. The size determination of the nanoparticles and microscopic results showed mostly spherical nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution and a mean size of about 80 nm. Two oxazolidine derivatives were physically doped at the surface of the nanoparticles to prepare photoluminescent polymer nanoparticles. Hydroxyl functional groups at the surface of the nanoparticles led to their hydrogen bonding interactions with the doped luminescent compounds. Optical analysis of the photoluminescent nanoparticles displayed different fluorescence emission and UV-vis absorbance intensities based on the amount of polar groups located at the surface of colloidal nanoparticles. Reducing the particle size to below 100 nm along with increasing the surface area can assist the decrease of the light reflectance and improvement of the latex nanoparticles' efficiency in the anticounterfeiting industry. This preparation methodology can efficiently provide remarkable photoreversible anticounterfeiting nanoinks used in different applications, such as print marking, security encoded tags, labeling, probing, and handwriting.

Multimode Anticounterfeiting Labels Based on a Flexible and Water-Resistant NaGdF4Yb3+,Er3+@Carbon Dots Chiral Fluorescent Cellulose Film

Advanced fluorescent anticounterfeiting technology has attracted a great deal of attention and inspired researchers to develop reliable fluorescent materials with multimodal luminescence. Herein, hydrophobic NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺ nanoparticles with dual-mode luminescence were prepared through a one-step solvothermal method using oleic acid as a chelating agent and octadecene as a solvent. The as-synthesized sample was found to provide both green upconversion luminescence and blue downconversion luminescence at excitation wavelengths of 365 and 980 nm. The structure and composition analysis showed that the as-obtained samples were spherical NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺@carbon dots (CDs) with a 14.5 ± 0.2 nm particle size and good dispersity in nonpolar solvents. Subsequently, NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺@CDs were coated on a cholesteric nanocellulose film with structural color to prepare multimode circularly polarized fluorescent materials. The prepared composite film is flexible and water-resistant, meaning that it is very suitable for anticounterfeiting labels, not only providing a simple and rapid synthesis method with which to prepare multimode fluorescent materials but also presenting a novel anticounterfeiting technology.

A Self-Color-Changing Film with Periodic Nanostructure for Anti-Counterfeit Application

A self-color-changing film aimed at enhanced security and anti-counterfeit packaging is presented. Its function is to change color automatically when flipped under visible light. It is low-cost, takes a few seconds to check by the naked eye, and does not need any special tools to evaluate. The design of the color-changing, anti-counterfeiting film is based on a frequency-selective surface (FSS). The film is designed with aluminum nanocubes. They are laid out as an array in a plane with equal distance from one another. This arrangement allows us to select certain wavelengths of light to pass through by the size of the cubes and the separation distance between them. The performance is evaluated by a finite element analysis (FEA) method. The results show that the intersection of transmittance and the reflectance curves cause the film to change its color automatically when flipped. We also propose a method to predict the color of the film based on the transmittance values. The accuracy of this method is verified by actual colors from experiments with an error of no more than 12.8%, analyzed by the CIE chromaticity diagram.

A Review and Classification Framework of Traceability Approaches for Identifying Product Supply Chain Counterfeiting

Counterfeiting is found today in many industries and in various forms with severe consequences for supply chain operations. Products counterfeiting can be detected in consumer goods such as clothing, food and beverages, accessories, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and luxury goods. The continuous violations in the supply chain have led to the need for mobilization of all involved stakeholders to overcome counterfeiting challenges. Effective traceability seems to be the only way to combat this phenomenon, ensuring safe and sustainable supply chain operations. This paper presents a structured literature review on traceability approaches for combatting the product supply chain counterfeiting phenomenon that led to forming a structured classification framework. The performed analysis aims to identify trends and good practices and can be used as a guideline for real-life projects against supply chain counterfeiting. The results show that traditional traceability methods are not effective as they can be easily falsified using today’s technological advancements. However, these same advancements also present valuable technologies such as blockchain and the internet of things to ensure safe and sustainable supply chain operations.

Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks with Uncoordinated Lewis Base Sites: Tunable Luminescence, Antibiotic Detection, and Anticounterfeiting

Several new isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), {[Ln₂(L)₃DMA₄]·2DMA}_n (1-Ln, where Ln = Eu, Tb, or Eu_xTb_1-x), were first constructed via the solvothermal reactions of 4,6-di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine and Ln³⁺ ions. 1-Ln exhibits a 4-connected two-dimensional framework endowed with uncoordinated Lewis base sites. An exploration of luminescence sensing demonstrated 1-Eu can be used for the selectivity detection of dimetridazole and metronidazole antibiotics in other antibiotics, blood plasma, and urine, acting as an exceptional recyclable luminescent probe. More importantly, the luminescent inks of 1-Ln are invisible, color adjustable, and stabilized, which may greatly improve their anticounterfeiting applications.

Photoluminescent Nanoinks with Multilevel Security for Quick Authentication of Encoded Optical Tags by Sunlight: Effective Physicochemical Parameters on Responsivity, Printability, and Brightness

Investigation of developed photoactive security inks and anticounterfeiting technologies in recent years indicates significant challenges for future of this research area, such as increase of security, fast responsivity, and facile authentication. Here, amine-functionalized latex nanoparticles were synthesized by emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). Size of the latex nanoparticles was increased as a function of poly(dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) (PDMAEMA) contents, and also a decrease of particle size was obtained in response to an increase of temperature from 25 to 70 °C, above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PDMAEMA. Surface physical modification of the functional latex nanoparticle with spiropyran photoswitches led to the development of anticounterfeiting nanoinks that have multilevel security and photochromic/fluorescence properties with a higher intensity and also brightness. The photoluminescent nanoinks were made of spiropyran latex nanoparticles and used for printing of the encoded optical security tags on cellulosic papers and banknotes. The results displayed that an increase of the particle size above 100 nm and an increase of the PDMAEMA contents led to a remarkable decrease of printability, fluorescent emission, brightness, intensity of photochromism, and also resolution of the printed security tags. As a significant advantage of the developed security inks, the printed security tags could be authenticated easily and fast upon sunlight irradiation by means of photochromism. The responsivity of encoded tags from the invisible to visible state is immediate upon sunlight irradiation for some seconds, whose intensity of coloration is appropriate and detectable clearly by naked eyes. The security anticounterfeiting inks based on spiropyran with multilevel security have been reported for the first time for applying in printing of encoded security tags on cellulosic papers, banknotes, and other documents, where the printed marks are detectable on sunlight exposure.

Thermal Disproportionation for the Synthesis of Silicon Nanocrystals and Their Photoluminescent Properties

In the past decades, silicon nanocrystals have received vast attention and have been widely studied owing to not only their advantages including nontoxicity, high availability, and abundance but also their unique luminescent properties distinct from bulk silicon. Among the various synthetic methods of silicon nanocrystals, thermal disproportionation of silicon suboxides (often with H as another major composing element) bears the superiorities of unsophisticated equipment requirements, feasible processing conditions, and precise control of nanocrystals size and structure, which guarantee a bright industrial application prospect. In this paper, we summarize the recent progress of thermal disproportionation chemistry for the synthesis of silicon nanocrystals, with the focus on the effects of temperature, Si/O ratio, and the surface groups on the resulting silicon nanocrystals’ structure and their corresponding photoluminescent properties. Moreover, the paradigmatic application scenarios of the photoluminescent silicon nanocrystals synthesized via this method are showcased or envisioned.

Photoluminescent and Chromic Nanomaterials for Anticounterfeiting Technologies: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Counterfeiting and inverse engineering of security and confidential documents, such as banknotes, passports, national cards, certificates, and valuable products, has significantly been increased, which is a major challenge for governments, companies, and customers. From recent global reports published in 2017, the counterfeiting market was evaluated to be $107.26 billion in 2016 and forecasted to reach $206.57 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 14.0%. Development of anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies with multilevel securities is a powerful solution to overcome this challenge. Stimuli-chromic (photochromic, hydrochromic, and thermochromic) and photoluminescent (fluorescent and phosphorescent) compounds are the most significant and applicable materials for development of complex anticounterfeiting inks with a high-security level and fast authentication. Highly efficient anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies have been developed to reach high security and efficiency. Applicable materials for anticounterfeiting applications are generally based on photochromic and photoluminescent compounds, for which hydrochromic and thermochromic materials have extensively been used in recent decades. A wide range of materials, such as organic and inorganic metal complexes, polymer nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymer dots, carbon dots, upconverting nanoparticles, and supramolecular structures, could display all of these phenomena depending on their physical and chemical characteristics. The polymeric anticounterfeiting inks have recently received significant attention because of their high stability for printing on confidential documents. In addition, the printing technologies including hand-writing, stamping, inkjet printing, screen printing, and anticounterfeiting labels are discussed for introduction of the most efficient methods for application of different anticounterfeiting inks. This review would help scientists to design and develop the most applicable encryption, authentication, and anticounterfeiting technologies with high security, fast detection, and potential applications in security marking and information encryption on various substrates.
