Hydrophobic thermoplastic starch supramolecularly-induced by a functional sucrose based ionic liquid crystal

Synthesis and physical properties of tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids based on 1-aryl-4,5-dimethylimidazolium cations

We present a new class of tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs) based on 1-aryl-4,5-dimethylimidazolium cations with electron-withdrawing and -donating substituents in different positions of the phenyl ring and the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NTf2) anion. We investigated the effect of additional methyl groups in the backbone of the imidazolium core on the physical properties regarding viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical window. With an electrochemical window of up to 6.3 V, which is unprecedented for TAAILs with an NTf2 anion, this new class of TAAILs demonstrates the opportunities that arise from modifications in the backbone of the imidazolium cation.

Starch-fiber foaming biodegradable composites with polylactic acid hydrophobic surface

Starch and plant fibers are abundant natural polymers that offer biodegradability, making them potential substitutes for plastics in certain applications, but are usually limited by its high hydrophilicity, and low mechanical performance. To address this issue, polylactic acid (PLA) is blended with cellulose and chitosan to create a waterproof film that can be applied to starch-fiber foaming biodegradable composites to enhance their water resistance properties. Here, plant fibers as a reinforcement is incorporated to the modified starch by foaming mold at 260 °C, and PLA based hydrophobic film is coated onto the surface to prepare the novel hydrophobic bio-composites. The developed bio-composite exhibits comprehensive water barrier properties, which is significantly better than that of traditional starch and cellulose based materials. Introducing PLA films decreases water vapor permeability from 766.83 g/m2·24h to 664.89 g/m2·24h, and reduce hysteresis angles from 15.57° to 8.59° within the first five minutes after exposure to moisture. The water absorption rate of PLA films also decreases significantly from 12.3 % to 7.9 %. Additionally, incorporating hydrophobic films not only enhances overall waterproof performance but also improves mechanical properties of the bio-composites. The fabricated bio-composite demonstrates improved tensile strength from 2.09 MPa to 3.53 MPa.

Supramolecular interactions between functional saccharide-based ionic liquids and cellulose macromolecules

Interactions between polysaccharides and ionic liquids (ILs) at the molecular level are essential to elucidate the dissolution and/or plasticization mechanism of polysaccharides. Herein, saccharide-based ILs (SILs) were synthesized, and cellulose membrane was soaked in different SILs to evaluate the interactions between SILs and cellulose macromolecules. The relevant results showed that the addition of SILs into cellulose can effectively reduce the intra- and/or inter-molecular hydrogen bonds of polysaccharides. Glucose-based IL showed the intensest supramolecular interactions with cellulose macromolecules compared to sucrose- and raffinose-based ILs. Two-dimensional correlation and perturbation-correlation moving window Fourier transform infrared techniques were for the first time used to reveal the dynamic variation of the supramolecular interactions between SILs and cellulose macromolecules. Except for the typical HO⋯H interactions of cellulose itself, stronger -Cl⋯HO hydrogen bonding interactions were detected in the specimen of SILs-modified cellulose membranes. Supramolecular interactions of -Cl⋯H, HO⋯H, C-Cl⋯H, and -C=O⋯H between SILs and cellulose macromolecules sequentially responded to the stimuli of temperature. This work provides a new perspective to understanding the interaction mechanism between polysaccharides and ILs, and an avenue to develop the next-generation ILs for dissolving or thermoplasticizing polysaccharide materials.

Flame-retardant phytic acid-decorated thermoplastic starch/halloysite nanotube composite films with enhanced mechanical strength and excellent barrier properties

Thermoplastic starch (TPS), a green and fully biodegradable composite, is considered the most viable option for replacing petroleum-based polymers. However, the poor mechanical properties, high flammability and moisture absorption susceptibility of TPS severely restrict its large-scale applications. Through PA phosphorylation and blending with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), phytic acid (PA)-phosphorylated HNT/TPS composite films (HNTPSFs) were fabricated with enhanced mechanical strength, excellent flame retardancy, and improved barrier properties. The introduction of HNTs substantially increased the mechanical properties (tensile strength increased 54.3 % and elongation at break decreased 37.0 %) of TPS films and reduced the diffusion of water vapor (decreased 34.1 %). Thermogravimetric analysis studies demonstrated that the HNTPSFs had exceptional thermal stability at their anticipated working temperatures. Furthermore, when the PA content in the composite films increased, the peak heat release rate, total heat release and fire growth index of the HNTPSFs all decreased substantially, demonstrating the improved flame retardancy of HNTPSFs. Hence, the synthesized fully biodegradable TPS composites show enormous potential in the field of renewable biopolymers.

Enhanced compatibility and functionality of thermoplastic cassava starch blended PBAT blown films with erythorbate and nitrite

Improved miscibility between thermoplastic starch (TPS) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) enhances processability and properties of TPS-based biodegradable plastic packaging. This research investigated compatibility and functionality of TPS/PBAT (50/50) blends with sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate (1-5%) via blown film extrusion. Film morphology and mechanical and barrier properties were investigated. Sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate improved processing efficiency of TPS, modified film flexibility and enhanced physical and chemical compatibility between TPS and PBAT matrices via hydrolysis, confirmed by ¹H NMR and ATR-FTIR analyses. These chemical reactions also affected thermal and phase transition behaviors. Increased starch granule dispersion caused smoother microstructure, resulting in higher oxygen barrier. Sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate functionalized TPS/PBAT films reduced discoloration of packaged cured meat during storage at 4 °C for 9 days. These compounds provided extra functionality and improved compatibility between TPS and PBAT biodegradable plastic blends for novel and sustainable food packaging.
