Enzymatically produced cellulose nanocrystals as reinforcement for waterborne polyurethane and its applications

Evaluating the reinforcing potential of enzymatic cellulose nanocrystals in polypropylene nanocomposite

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) produced through enzymatic hydrolysis exhibit physicochemical properties that make them attractive as eco-friendly reinforcing agents in polymer composites. However, the extent of their efficacy within a polymeric matrix is yet to be fully established. This study investigated the reinforcing capabilities of enzymatic CNC (approximately 3 nm in diameter) isolated from bleached eucalyptus Kraft pulp (BEKP), focusing on its application in polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites produced by injection molding. The study compared the performance of this enzymatic CNC (1-5 % wt) with PP composites reinforced with micro-sized cellulose fibers (BEKP at 10-30 % wt, approximately 13 μm) and additionally with commercial CNC produced by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Despite enzymatic CNC experiencing agglomeration during spray-drying, leading to an average diameter increase to 3 μm, it still significantly increased the crystallization and glass transition temperature of the PP matrix. However, this agglomeration likely hindered the improvement of the mechanical properties within the nanocomposites. The results also showed that enzymatic CNC provided higher thermal stability at lower reinforcement levels compared to BEKP, but this came with a reduction in stiffness, posing a significant consideration in composite design. The addition of a coupling agent greatly enhanced the dispersion of reinforcements and the interfacial adhesion within the matrix, contributing to the enhanced performance of the composite properties. Additionally, enzymatic CNC demonstrated potential for superior reinforcement efficacy compared to commercially available CNC produced by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. In conclusion, enzymatic CNC exhibited a promising role as nano-reinforcement for thermoplastic polymer nanocomposites, exhibiting higher thermal properties at lower reinforcing loads than traditional micro-sized fiber reinforcements. The absence of sulfur, coupled with its higher thermal stability and sustainable potential, positions enzymatic CNC as a particularly favorable choice for applications involving direct contact with food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical materials.

Preparation of lignin-based full-color carbon quantum dots and their multifunctionalization with waterborne polyurethanes

Lignin is a popular material for energy transition and high-value utilization due to its low cost, non-toxicity, renewability, and widespread availability. However, its complex structure has hindered its application. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) uses water as a dispersion medium, which is safer for humans and the environment but also leads to disadvantages such as poor mechanical properties and water resistance. In this study, we prepared multicolor photoluminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in a wide range of wavelengths from lignin. We successfully prepared panchromatic CQDs by additive mixing. The redshift of the emission wavelength is attributed to the synergistic effect of the sp2 conjugated structure and the surface functional groups. The full-color solid-state luminescence of the CQDs was successfully achieved, and most importantly, the application of full-color CQDs in light-emitting diodes was realized. Moreover, the embedding of the multicolor CQDs in WPU not only makes WPU luminescent but also improves the water resistance and mechanical properties of WPUs. The hydrogen-bonding interactions between the functional groups on the surface of the CQDs and the urethane were responsible for the high performance of the composite. We investigated the UV and strong blue light shielding abilities of WPU/yellow CQDs films, which resulted from the unique absorption peaks of yellow CQDs in the UV region and the strong blue light region. This work provides an efficient method for the high-value utilization of biomass materials and paves the way for the multifunctional application of WPU.

Biotechnological innovations in nanocellulose production from waste biomass with a focus on pineapple waste

New materials' synthesis and utilization have shown many critical challenges in healthcare and other industrial sectors as most of these materials are directly or indirectly developed from fossil fuel resources. Environmental regulations and sustainability concepts have promoted the use of natural compounds with unique structures and properties that can be biodegradable, biocompatible, and eco-friendly. In this context, nanocellulose (NC) utility in different sectors and industries is reported due to their unique properties including biocompatibility and antimicrobial characteristics. The bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based materials have been synthesized by bacterial cells and extracted from plant waste materials including pineapple plant waste biomass. These materials have been utilized in the form of nanofibers and nanocrystals. These materials are found to have excellent surface properties, low density, and good transparency, and are rich in hydroxyl groups for their modifications to other useful products. These materials are well utilized in different sectors including biomedical or health care centres, nanocomposite materials, supercapacitors, and polymer matrix production. This review explores different approaches for NC production from pineapple waste residues using biotechnological interventions, approaches for their modification, and wider applications in different sectors. Recent technological developments in NC production by enzymatic treatment are critically discussed. The utilization of pineapple waste-derived NC from a bioeconomic perspective is summarized in the paper. The chemical composition and properties of nanocellulose extracted from pineapple waste may have unique characteristics compared to other sources. Pineapple waste for nanocellulose production aligns with the principles of sustainability, waste reduction, and innovation, making it a promising and novel approach in the field of nanocellulose materials.

High-yield production of rod-like and spherical nanocellulose by controlled enzymatic hydrolysis of mechanically pretreated cellulose

In this study, a simple and scalable mechanical pretreatment was evaluated as means to increase the cellulose accessibility of cellulose fibers, with the aim of improving the efficiency of enzymatic reactions for the production of cellulose nanoparticles (CNs). In addition, the effects of enzyme type (endoglucanase - EG, endoxylanase - EX, and a cellulase preparation - CB), composition ratio (0-200UEG:0-200UEX or EG, EX, and CB alone), and loading (0 U-200 U) were investigated in relation to CN yield, morphology, and properties. The combination of mechanical pretreatment and specific conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis substantially improved CN production yield, reaching up to 83 %. The production of rod-like or spherical nanoparticles and their chemical composition were highly dependent on the type of enzyme, composition ratio, and loading. However, these enzymatic conditions minimally affected the crystallinity index (approximately 80 %) and thermal stability (T_max within 330-355 °C). Collectively, these results demonstrate that mechanical pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis under specific conditions is a suitable method to produce nanocellulose with a high yield and tunable properties such as purity, rod-like or spherical forms, high thermal stability, and high crystallinity. Therefore, this production route is a promising approach to produce tailored CNs with the potential to offer superior performance in a variety of sophisticated applications, including, but not limited to, wound dressings, drug delivery, thermoplastic composites, 3D (bio)printing, and smart packaging.

Castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane/tunicate cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposites for wearable strain sensors

In this study, tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs) were introduced into castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to prepare bio-based nanocomposites through a simple solution blending method. The effect of TCNCs content on the particle size and stability of the composite dispersions, as well as the thermophysical and mechanical properties of the composite films were studied and discussed. The unique structure and properties of TCNCs, such as high crystallinity, large aspect ratio and high modulus, not only greatly improved the storage stability of WPU, but also showed significant reinforcing/toughening effects and excellent compatibility to WPU. By drip-coating silver nanowires (AgNWs) on the surface of the composite films, the flexible strain sensors were fabricated, which showed excellent sensitivity in monitoring human movement.

Effect of ultrasonication on lubrication performance of cellulose nano-crystalline (CNC) suspensions as green lubricants

Industrial lubricants are widely introduced to the mechanical systems to reduce the wear and energy losses. With the increasing demand for environmental protection, developing eco-friendly lubricants becomes more crucial. Due to their abundance, biodegradability, non-toxicity, high thermal stability and low cost, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) may be an appropriate choice for formulating green lubricants. In this study, using different microstructural and tribological characterization methods, we systematically investigated the effect of ultrasonic treatment on lubrication performance of CNC aqueous suspensions. It was observed that within sonication energy of 4-50 kJ/g_CNC, there exists an optimum condition for tribological measurements. In comparison to the unsonicated suspensions, sonicated CNC lubricants could decrease COF (coefficient of friction) and wear by almost 25 and 30% respectively. Results of this study suggest that ultrasonication processing can significantly improve lubrication performance of CNC aqueous suspensions.

A comprehensive investigation on cellulose nanocrystals with different crystal structures from cotton via an efficient route

The crystal structures of cellulose nanomaterials play an important role in their morphologies and applications, however, there was still lacking systematic research on preparing various crystalline allomorphs of cellulose nanocrystals with high thermal stability. Herein, the efficient synthesis route was presented to design various crystalline allomorphs of cellulose from cotton. And then, cellulose nanocrystals with different crystal structures (CNC-I, CNC-II, CNC-III_II, CNC-IV_II) were prepared by hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis of resultant cellulose. Overall, needle-like CNC-I (length of 180 ± 25 nm, diameter of 12 ± 2 nm), near-spherical CNC-II (diameter of 101 ± 12 nm), and spherical CNC-III_II (diameter of 22 ± 3 nm) and CNC-IV_II (diameter of 21 ± 2 nm) all exhibited remarkable dispersibility and thermal stability (T_max > 357 °C). This work provides a simple and low-cost synthesis route for various crystalline allomorphs of CNCs with high thermal stability from the same raw materials (cotton).

A Brief Introduction to the Polyurethanes According to the Principles of Green Chemistry

Polyurethanes are most often called “green” when they contain natural, renewable additives in their network or chemical structure, such as mono- and polysaccharides, oils (mainly vegetable oils), polyphenols (e.g., lignins, tannins), or various compounds derived from agro-waste white biotechnology (Principle 7). This usually results in these polyurethanes obtained from less hazardous substrates (Principle 4). Appropriate modification of polyurethanes makes them susceptible to degradation, and the use of appropriate processes allows for their recycling (Principle 10). However, this fulfilment of other principles also predisposes them to be green. As in the production of other polymer materials, the synthesis of polyurethanes is carried out with the use of catalysts (such as biocatalysts) (Principle 9) with full control of the course of the reaction (Principle 11), which allows maximization of the atomic economy (Principle 2) and an increase in energy efficiency (Principle 6) while minimizing the risk of production waste (Principle 1). Moreover, traditional substrates in the synthesis of polyurethanes can be replaced with less toxic ones (e.g., in non-isocyanate polyurethanes), which, at the same time, leads to a non-toxic product (Principle 3, Principle 5). In general, there is no need for blocking compounds to provide intermediates in the synthesis of polyurethanes (Principle 8). Reasonable storage of substrates, their transport, and the synthesis of polyurethanes guarantee the safety and the prevention of uncontrolled reactions (Principle 12). This publication is a summary of the achievements of scientists and technologists who are constantly working to create ideal polyurethanes that do not pollute the environment, and their synthesis and use are consistent with the principles of sustainable economy.

Nanocelluloses Reinforced Bio-Waterborne Polyurethane

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of two kinds of bio- nano-reinforcements, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and bacterial cellulose (BC), on the properties of castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) films. CNCs were obtained by the acidolysis of microcrystalline cellulose, while BC was produced from Komagataeibacter medellinensis. A WBPU/BC composite was prepared by the impregnation of a wet BC membrane and further drying, while the WBPU/CNC composite was obtained by casting. The nanoreinforcement was adequately dispersed in the polymer using any of the preparation methods, obtaining optically transparent compounds. Thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, dynamical mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, contact angle, and water absorption tests were carried out to analyze the chemical, physical, and thermal properties, as well as the morphology of nanocelluloses and composites. The incorporation of nanoreinforcements into the formulation increased the storage modulus above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The thermal stability of the BC-reinforced composites was slightly higher than that of the CNC composites. In addition, BC allowed maintaining the structural integrity of the composites films, when they were immersed in water. The results were related to the relatively high thermal stability and the particular three-dimensional interconnected reticular morphology of BC.

Degradability of Polyurethanes and Their Blends with Polylactide, Chitosan and Starch

One of the methods of making traditional polymers more environmentally friendly is to modify them with natural materials or their biodegradable, synthetic equivalents. It was assumed that blends with polylactide (PLA), polysaccharides: chitosan (Ch) and starch (St) of branched polyurethane (PUR) based on synthetic poly([R,S]-3-hydroxybutyrate) (R,S-PHB) would degrade faster in the processes of hydrolysis and oxidation than pure PUR. For the sake of simplicity in the publication, all three modifiers: commercial PLA, Ch created by chemical modification of chitin and St are called bioadditives. The samples were incubated in a hydrolytic and oxidizing environment for 36 weeks and 11 weeks, respectively. The degradation process was assessed by observation of the chemical structure as well as the change in the mass of the samples, their molecular weight, surface morphology and thermal properties. It was found that the PUR samples with the highest amount of R,S-PHB and the lowest amount of polycaprolactone triol (PCL_triol) were degraded the most. Moreover, blending with St had the greatest impact on the susceptibility to degradation of PUR. However, the rate of weight loss of the samples was low, and after 36 weeks of incubation in the hydrolytic solution, it did not exceed 7% by weight. The weight loss of Ch and PLA blends was even smaller. However, a significant reduction in molecular weight, changes in morphology and changes in thermal properties indicated that the degradation of the samples should occur quickly after this time. Therefore, when using these polyurethanes and their blends, it should be taken into account that they should decompose slowly in their initial life. In summary, this process can be modified by changing the amount of R,S-PHB, the degree of cross-linking, and the type and amount of second blend component added (bioadditives).
