Preparation of a novel double crosslinked chitin aerogel via etherification with high strength

Sustainable versatile chitin aerogels: facile synthesis, structural control and high-efficiency acoustic absorption

Bio-based materials with excellent acoustic absorption properties are in great demand in architecture, interior, and human settlement applications for efficient noise control. In this study, crayfish shells, a form of kitchen waste, are utilized as the primary material to produce ultralight and multifunctional chitin aerogels, which effectively eliminate noise. Different replacement solvents and freezing rates were employed to regulate the porous structures of chitin aerogels, and their resulting acoustic absorption performance was investigated. Results demonstrate that employing deionized water as the replacement solvent and utilizing a common-freeze mode (frozen via refrigerator at -26 °C) can produce chitin aerogels with larger porosity (96.26%) and apertures, as well as thicker pore walls. This results in superior broadband acoustic absorption performance (with a maximum absorption coefficient reaching 0.99) and higher Young's modulus (28 kPa). Conversely, chitin aerogels solvent-exchanged with tert-butyl alcohol or subjected to quick-freeze mode (frozen via liquid nitrogen) exhibit smaller porosity (92.32% and 94.84%) and apertures, thereby possessing stronger diffuse reflection of visible light (average reflectance of 94.30% and 88.18%), and enhanced low-frequency (500 to 1600 Hz) acoustic absorption properties. Additionally, the acoustic absorption mechanism of fabricated chitin aerogels was predicted using a simple three-parameter analysis Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge (JCAL) model. This study presents a novel approach to developing multifunctional biomass materials with excellent acoustic absorption properties, which could have a wide range of potential applications.

Mechanically Strengthened Aerogels through Multiscale, Multicompositional, and Multidimensional Approaches: A Review

In recent decades, aerogels have attracted tremendous attention in academia and industry as a class of lightweight and porous multifunctional nanomaterial. Despite their wide application range, the low mechanical durability hinders their processing and handling, particularly in applications requiring complex physical structures. "Mechanically strengthened aerogels" have emerged as a potential solution to address this drawback. Since the first report on aerogels in 1931, various modified synthesis processes have been introduced in the last few decades to enhance the aerogel mechanical strength, further advancing their multifunctional scope. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art developments of mechanically strengthened aerogels through multicompositional and multidimensional approaches. Furthermore, new trends and future directions for as prevailed commercialization of aerogels as plastic materials are discussed.

Hybrid Amyloid-Chitin Nanofibrils for Magnetic and Catalytic Aerogels

In the quest for a sustainable and circular economy, it is essential to explore environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional petroleum-based materials. A promising pathway toward this goal lies in the leveraging of biopolymers derived from food waste, such as proteins and polysaccharides, to develop advanced sustainable materials. Here, we design versatile hybrid materials by hybridizing amyloid nanofibrils derived by self-assembly of whey, a dairy byproduct, with chitin nanofibrils exfoliated from the two distinct allomorphs of α-chitin and β-chitin, extracted from seafood waste. Various hydrogels and aerogels were developed via the hybridization and reassembly of these biopolymeric nanobuilding blocks, and they were further magnetized upon biomineralization with iron nanoparticles. The pH-phase diagram highlights the significant role of electrostatic interactions in gel formation, between positively charged amyloid fibrils and negatively charged chitin nanofibrils. Hybrid magnetic aerogels exhibit a ferromagnetic response characterized by a low coercivity (<50 Oe) and a high specific magnetization (>40 emu/g) at all temperatures, making them particularly suitable for superparamagnetic applications. Additionally, these aerogels exhibit a distinct magnetic transition, featuring a higher blocking temperature (200 K) compared to previously reported similar nanoparticles (160 K), indicating enhanced magnetic stability at elevated temperatures. Finally, we demonstrate the practical application of these hybrid magnetic materials as catalysts for carbon monoxide oxidation, showcasing their potential in environmental pollution control and highlighting their versatility as catalyst supports.

Glycerol/organic acid-based ternary deep eutectic solvents as a green approach to recover chitin with different molecular weight from seafood waste

In this study, we designed a green and efficient approach for the fractionation of high-purity chitin with tunable molecular weights from seafood waste. This was achieved by using ternary deep eutectic solvents (TDESs) composed of choline chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor, glycerol as the polyol-based hydrogen bond donor, together with lactic acid or malic acid. Two binary DESs and four TDESs were evaluated for their ability to recover chitin. The extracted chitin exhibited not only high yield with excellent protein and mineral removal, but also high purity with similar crystallinity patterns as standard chitin. However, the average molecular weights, viscosity behavior and morphology of chitin extracted by DESs were varied and influenced by organic acid to glycerol molar ratios. The molecular weights of chitin extracted by lactic acid-based TDES ranged from 264 kDa to 541 kDa, but malic acid-based TEDS displayed a stronger depolymerization effect, resulting in chitin with a smaller molecular weight of less than 300 kDa. Lactic acid-based TDES revealed that the purity of chitin remained higher than 92 % after three cycles. This sustainable and environmentally friendly extraction system holds great potential to recover chitin from seafood waste, opening a new era for chitin extraction and applications.

Biopolymer-Polysiloxane Double Network Aerogels

A new series of transparent aerogels of biopolymer-polysiloxane double networks is reported. Biopolymer aerogels have attracted much attention from green and sustainable aspects but suffered from strong hydrophilicity and difficulty to make homogeneous structures in nanoscale; these drawbacks are overcome by compositing with a polysiloxane network. Alginate-polymethylsilsesquioxane aerogel has high optical transparency, water repellency, comparable superinsulation property and improved bending flexibility compared to pure polymethylsilsesquioxane aerogel. The nanoscale homogeneity is realized by separating the crosslinking steps for two networks in a sequential protocol: condensation of siloxane bonds and metal-crosslinking of biopolymer. The crosslinking order, biopolymer-first or siloxane-first, and universality/limitation of biopolymer-crosslinker pairs are discussed to construct fundamental chemistry of double network systems for their further application potentials.

Characterization of chitosan-gelatin cryogel templates developed by chemical crosslinking and oxidation resistance of camellia oil cryogel-templated oleogels

In this study, chitosan-gelatin conjugates were prepared by chemical crosslinking of tannic acid. The cryogel templates were developed through freeze-drying and immersed in camellia oil to construct cryogel-templated oleogels. Chemical crosslinking resulted in apparent colour changes and improved emulsion-related/rheological properties on conjugates. The cryogel templates with different formulas exhibited different microstructures with high porosities (over 96 %), and crosslinked samples might have higher hydrogen bonding strength. Tannic acid crosslinking also led to enhanced thermal stabilities and mechanical properties. Cryogel templates could reach a considerable oil absorption capacity of up to 29.26 g/g and prevent oil from leaking effectively. The obtained oleogels with high tannic acid content possessed outstanding antioxidant abilities. After 8 days of rapid oxidation at 40 °C, Oleogels with a high degree of crosslinking owned the lowest POV and TBARS values (39.74 nmol/kg, and 24.40 μg/g, respectively). This study indicates that the involvement of chemical crosslinking would favor the preparation and the application potential of cryogel-templated oleogels, and the tannic acid in the composite biopolymer systems could act as both the crosslinking agent and the antioxidant.

High-strength, antibacterial, antioxidant, hemostatic, and biocompatible chitin/PEGDE-tannic acid hydrogels for wound healing

Natural polymer hydrogels are widely used in various aspects of biomedical engineering, such as wound repair, owing to their abundance and biosafety. However, the low strength and the lack of function restricted their development and application scope. Herein, we fabricated novel multifunctional chitin/PEGDE-tannic acid (CPT) hydrogels through chemical- and physical-crosslinking strategies, using chitin as the base material, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) and tannic acid (TA) as crosslinking agents, and 90 % ethanol as the regenerative bath. CPT hydrogels maintained a stable three-dimensional porous structure with suitable water contents and excellent biocompatibility. The mechanical properties of hydrogels were greatly improved (tensile stress up to 5.43 ± 1.14 MPa). Moreover, CPT hydrogels had good antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostatic activities and could substantially promote wound healing in a rat model of full-thickness skin defect by regulating inflammatory responses and promoting collagen deposition and blood vessel formation. Therefore, this work provides a useful strategy to fabricate novel multifunctional CPT hydrogels with excellent mechanical, antibacterial, antioxidant, hemostatic, and biocompatible properties. CPT hydrogels could be promising candidates for wound healing.

Biocompatible and biodegradable chitin-based hydrogels crosslinked by BDDE with excellent mechanical properties for effective prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesion

Postoperative peritoneal adhesions are common complications caused by abdominal and pelvic surgery, which seriously impact the quality of life of patients and impose additional financial burdens. Using of biomedical materials as physical barriers to completely isolate the traumatic organ and injured tissue is an optimal strategy for preventing postoperative adhesions. However, the limited efficacy and difficulties in the complete degradation or integration of biomedical materials with living tissues restrict the application of these materials. In this study, novel chitin-based crosslinked hydrogels with appropriate mechanical properties and flexibilities were developed using a facile and green strategy. The developed hydrogels simultaneously exhibited excellent biocompatibilities and resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption and NIH/3T3 fibroblast adhesion. Furthermore, these hydrogels were biodegradable and could be completely integrated into the native extracellular matrix. The chitin-based crosslinked hydrogels also effectively inhibited postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rat models of adhesion and recurrence. Therefore, these novel chitin-based crosslinked hydrogels are excellent candidate physical barriers for the efficient prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesions and provide a new anti-adhesion strategy for biomedical applications.

High strength chitin/chitosan-based aerogel with 3D hierarchically macro-meso-microporous structure for high-efficiency adsorption of Cu(II) ions and Congo red

A high-strength aerogel with a 3D hierarchically macro-meso-microporous structure (HPS-aerogel) was designed based on biological macromolecules of chitin and chitosan. The macropores can be created within HPS-aerogel after CaCO₃ removal, and meso-micropores resulting from water sublimation during freeze-drying. The macro-meso-microporous structure endowed HPS-aerogel with high porosity, good mechanical properties, and excellent compression strength (1472 kPa at strain of 80 %). The HPS-aerogel exposed many adsorption sites and was used as an adsorbent to simultaneously remove Cu(II) and Congo red (CR) from water for the first time. The adsorption capability for Cu(II) and CR was 59.21 mg/g and 2074 mg/g at 303 K, respectively, and the adsorption processes matched Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models with spontaneous and endothermic nature. Additionally, HPS-aerogel showed good anti-interference ability for coexisting pollutant. Importantly, HPS-aerogel exhibited an effective fixed-bed column adsorption performance for dynamic Cu(II) and CR with superior reusability and stability. Furthermore, HPS-aerogel showed outstanding adsorption efficiencies for Cu(II) and CR in real samples. The main adsorption mechanism for Cu(II) was attributed to the electrostatic attraction and chelation, and which was electrostatic attraction, Schiff base, and hydrogen bonding for CR. Therefore, HPS-aerogel should to be a promising adsorbent for removing both heavy-metal ions and dyes from wastewater.

Adsorption properties and recognition mechanisms of a novel surface imprinted polymer for selective removal of Cu(II)-citrate complexes

Cu(II)-citrate (Cu(II)-CA) complex, as one of the components in plating solutions, increases the difficulty of Cu(II) treatment due to its stable structure and high mobility. In this work, a novel surface imprinted polymer (Cu-CA-SIP) for selective removal of Cu(II)-CA complex from aqueous solution is synthesized by using polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafted onto chloromethylated polystyrene (CMP) microspheres. Cu(II)-CA anions are successfully imprinted with the molar ration of 1:1 by Cu-CA-SIP at initial pH 4.0. Nearly 100% removal rate can be achieved even at low Cu(II)-CA concentration (0.5 mmol/L), and the maximum Cu(II) uptake of Cu-CA-SIP reaches 1.38 mmol/g at 303 K. In Cu(II)/Fe(III)-CA, Cu(II)/Ni(II)-CA, Cu(II)/Zn(II)-CA and Cu(II)/Cd(II)-CA systems, the relative selectivity coefficients of Cu-CA-SIP for Cu(II)-CA are 9.66, 2.32, 1.40 and 44.55, respectively. Moreover, Cu-CA-SIP can be retrieved with negligible loss of adsorption capacity after six times of reuse. The Cu-CA-SIP column can effectively treat the actual electroplating wastewater within 114 BV, and can still reach 104 BV after three dynamic cycles. Therefore, an innovative imprinted material is designed for the first time on the basis of coordination-configuration recognition mechanism for the treatment of electroplating wastewater, providing a new insight in developing surface imprinted polymer in environmental remediation.
