Abstract
Superabsorbent hydrogels made from agro waste materials have the potential to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental sustainability. These hydrogels not only help reduce water consumption and increase crop yields but also contribute to minimizing waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Recent research on superabsorbent hydrogels derived from agro wastes has focused on the preparation of hydrogels based on natural polymers isolated from agro wastes, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This review provides an in-depth examination of hydrogels developed from raw agro waste materials and natural polymers extracted from agro wastes, highlighting that these studies start with raw wastes as the main materials. The utilization strategies for specific types of agro wastes are comprehensively described. This review outlines different methods utilized in the production of these hydrogels, including physical cross-linking techniques such as dissolution-regeneration and freeze-thawing, as well as chemical cross-linking methods involving various cross-linking agents and graft polymerization techniques such as free radical polymerization, microwave-assisted polymerization, and γ radiation graft polymerization. Specifically, this review explores the applications of agro waste-based superabsorbent hydrogels in enhancing soil properties such as water retention and slow-release of fertilizers for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Mercury pollution in waters attracts lots of attention due to its serious toxicity and high bioenrichment and many efforts have been devoted in the development of adsorbents for mercury detection and removal. Herein, a cellulose-based adsorbent Cell-TriA-HQ is functionalized with quinoline fluorophore by covalent immobilization through "Click reaction" with high yield. In addition to the admirable adsorptive performance, the prepared adsorbent exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg (II) in water that the detection limit for Hg (II) is determined to be as low as 1.92 × 10-7 M. The sensitive fluorescence enhancement response is considered to be resulted from the inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer between triazole and quinoline groups and the reinforcement of structural rigidity. The easy manipulation along with excellent performance of adsorption capacity, detective ability and reusability for the multifunctional adsorbent makes it potential in mercury monitoring and removal from aqueous solutions in the field of water treatment.

Abstract
Frost damage remains a significant challenge for agricultural practices worldwide, leading to substantial economic losses and food insecurity. Practically, traditional methods for frost management have proven ineffective and come with several drawbacks, such as energy consumption and limited efficacy. Hence, proposing an anti-freezing coating can be an innovative idea. The potential of sodium alginate (SA) to construct anti-freezing hydrogels has been explored in several sciences. SA hydrogels can form protective films around plants as a barrier against freezing temperatures and ice crystals on the plant's surface. Sodium alginate exhibits excellent water retention, enhancing plant hydration during freezing conditions. This coating can provide insulation, effectively shielding the plant from frost damage. The advantages of SA as a coating material, such as its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxic nature, are highlighted. Therefore, the proposed use of SA as an innovative coating material holds promise for safeguarding plants from frost damage. Following SA potential and frost's huge damage, the present review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in SA-based anti-freezing hydrogels, their applications, and their potential in agriculture as anti-freezing coatings. However, further research and field trials are necessary to optimize the application methods and understand the long-term effects on productivity.

Abstract
The development of cost-effective, eco-friendly conductive hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties, self-healing capabilities, and non-toxicity holds immense significance in the realm of biosensors. The biosensors demonstrate promising applications in the fields of biomedical engineering and human motion detection. A unique double-network hydrogel was prepared through physical-chemical crosslinking using chitosan (CS), polyacrylic acid (AA), and sodium alginate (SA) as raw materials. The prepared double-network hydrogels exhibited exceptional mechanical properties, as well as self-healing and conductive capabilities. Polyacrylic acid as the first layer network, while chitosan and sodium alginate were incorporated to establish the second layer network through electrostatic interactions, thereby imparting self-healing and self-recovery properties. The hydrogel was subsequently immersed in the salt solution to induce network winding. The mechanical robustness of the hydrogel was significantly enhanced through synergistic coordination of covalent and non-covalent interactions. When the concentration of sodium alginate was 20 g/L, the double-network hydrogel exhibits enhanced mechanical properties, with a tensile fracture stress of up to 1.31 MPa and a strength of 4.17 MPa under 80% compressive deformation. Furthermore, the recovery rate of this double-network hydrogel reached an impressive 89.63% within a span of 30 min. After 24 h without any external forces, the self-healing rate reached 26.11%, demonstrating remarkable capabilities in terms of self-recovery and self-healing. Furthermore, this hydrogel exhibited consistent conductivity properties and was capable of detecting human finger movements. Hence, this study presents a novel approach for designing and synthesizing environmentally friendly conductive hydrogels for biosensors.

Abstract
The cross-linker-free hydrogels have gained attention due to their lack of need for chemically modified polymers, resulting in better biocompatibility. The hydrogel properties can be enhanced by altering physical forces such as electrostatics and H-bonds. Tuning the physical interactions between polymers, salts, and plasticisers can unlock new horizons in material properties. This article examines four different salts and mixtures to determine their impact on gelatin-alginate biomaterial design. Drug release, swelling, and rheological properties are represented using a 3-D plot, and optimum samples are identified. It is concluded that kosmotropes yield better release and swelling results than chaotropes. The physical interactions of these salts with polymers are explained using DLS and FTIR/ATR studies, and these findings are corroborated with release, swelling, and rheological analyses. Another aspect of the biomaterial, self-healing property, is also considered. A 3-D plot is prepared using release kinetics, gel strength, and recovery percentage (three important factors for self-healing hydrogels). Chaotropes are identified as better candidates for self-healing behaviour. However, when considering gel strength, release, and self-healing, kosmotropes are favourable. Hence, different salts can be selected based on the desired application for hydrogels. It is also concluded that electrostatic forces hinder the formation of H-bonds between polymer chains.

Abstract
This study synthesized new cellulose-based hydrogels, namely cellulose and cellulose/poly acrylic acid, using cellulose extracted from rice straw via alkaline and acidic pulping processes. The research demonstrated alkaline treatment with sodium hydroxide to be more effective for cellulose extraction compared to acidic treatment. Hydrogel synthesis used graft polymerization and chemical crosslinking with potassium persulfate as initiator and epichlorohydrin as a crosslinker. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterized the prepared hydrogels. Important factors determining hydrogel competence are swelling ratio and water retention rate. The cellulose hydrogel exhibited the highest swelling ratio in tap water (9811%) with 76.25 wt% water retention and in artificial hard water (3121.43%) with 64.58 wt% retention after 4 days outdoors at 298 K. Finally, hydrogels were investigated extensively for agricultural applications. Fenugreek seeds germinated and grew well (67% germination after 7 days) in normal soil mixed with 10% cellulose hydrogel. Biodegradability testing exhibited 6% degradation after 40 days and 10% after 120 days in an open-air lab at room temperature and 60% humidity.

Abstract
Plastics displaying many merits have been indispensable in daily life and they still maintain the strong momentum of development. Nevertheless, petroleum-based plastics possess a stable polymer structure and most of them are incinerated or accumulated in the environment, leading to devastating impacts on our ecology system. Thus, exploiting renewable and biodegradable materials to substitute or replace these traditional petroleum-derived plastics is an urgent and important task. In this work, renewable and biodegradable all-biomass cellulose/grape-seed-extract (GSEs) composite films with high transparency and anti-ultraviolet performance were fabricated successfully from pretreated old cotton textiles (P-OCTs) using a relatively simple, green, yet cost-effective, approach. It is proved that the obtained cellulose/GSEs composite films exhibit good ultraviolet shielding performance without sacrificing their transparency, and their UV-A and UV-B blocking values can reach as high as nearly 100%, indicating the good UV-blocking performance of GSEs. Meanwhile, the cellulose/GSEs film show higher thermal stability and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) than most common plastics. Moreover, the mechanical property of the cellulose/GSEs film can be adjusted by the addition of a plasticizer. Briefly, the transparent all-biomass cellulose/grape-seed-extracts composite films with high anti-ultraviolet capacity were manufactured successfully and they can be used as potential materials in the packaging field.

Abstract
In this paper, g-C3N4-based hydrogel with a 3D network structure was synthesized via a simple and cheap reaction, using hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as the main materials. Electron microscope images revealed that the microstructure of g-C3N4-HEC hydrogel was rough and porous. The luxuriant scaly textures of this hydrogel were due to the uniform distribution of g-C3N4 nanoparticles. It was found that this hydrogel showed great removal ability of bisphenol A (BPA) through a synergistic effect of adsorption and photodegradation. The adsorption capacity and degradation efficiency of g-C3N4-HEC hydrogel (3%) for BPA were 8.66 mg/g and 78% under the conditions of C0 = 9.94 mg/L and pH = 7.0, which were much higher than those for the original g-C3N4 and HEC hydrogel. In addition, g-C3N4-HEC hydrogel (3%) exhibited excellent removal efficiency (98%) of BPA (C0 = 9.94 mg/L) in a dynamic adsorption and photodegradation system. Meanwhile, the mechanism of removal was investigated in depth. The superior batch and continuous removal capability of this g-C3N4-based hydrogel make it promising for environmental applications.

Abstract
In this work, a porous tobacco straw-based polyacrylic acid hydrogel STS-PAA with high adsorption performance was prepared by polymerizing pretreated waste tobacco straw (TS) with acrylic acid/potassium acrylate by UV radiation initiation. The adsorption performance of metal ions was investigated. The effects of different temperatures (25°C, 35°C, and 45°C), adsorption times (1-420 min), pH values (2.0-6.0) and initial concentrations (0.25-4.0 mmol L-1) of metal ions on the adsorption amount of heavy metal ions were investigated. The results showed that the hydrogel had a high removal rate of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The adsorption of Pb2+ was particularly effective. When C0 = 4.0 mmol L-1, pH = 6, the equilibrium adsorption amount of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ reached 1.49 mmol g-1, 1.02 mmol L-1 and 0.94 mmol g-1, respectively. The chemical structure and morphology of the hydrogels were characterized by FT-IR, EDS, SEM and XPS. The Langmuir model fits well with the adsorption system. The kinetic data suggest the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ follow the pseudo-first-order model. This indicates that STS-PAA adsorption of three heavy metal ions is monolayer physical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ by STS-PAA is an endothermic (ΔH>0) entropy increase (ΔS>0) non-spontaneous reaction.

Abstract
A purely chemical method is demonstrated to treat a variety of biomass wastes for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) with a consistent property. By hydrothermal reaction, carbon dots (CDs) can be easily grafted on the surface of CNFs to act as photo-thermal agents and enable fast water evaporation rate at 2.5 kg m-2h-1 with about 96.45% solar-to-vapor efficiency under one sun irradiation. This derives from good hydration ability of this system, which lowers the evaporation enthalpy. Moreover, this system not only adsorbs dye contaminants effectively by the formation of hydrogen bonds, but also possesses long-term antifouling solar desalination by means of rationally drilled millimeter-sized channels. Given the sustainable biomass resources and scalable fabrication process, this work offers a promising strategy towards construct low-cost evaporators with the excellent water purification performance.

Abstract
Disposable paper cups are widely used in daily life and most of them are landfilled or incinerated after use, resulting in a serious ecological hazard and significant waste of resources due to the usage of thin polyethylene (PE) as their inner coating. Hence, converting these common solid domestic wastes into high-value added materials is attractive and meaningful. In this study, transparent cellulose-based films were achieved from old bamboo-based disposable paper cups after pretreatment through using the room ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) as solvent. The cellulose-based film with a dense texture demonstrated a relatively nice mechanical and UV-shielding performances, and its tensile strength was as high as 48 MPa, much higher than that of commercial polyethylene (PE, 12 MPa) film. Thus, the resultant cellulose-based film showed a great potential in the packaging field. Besides, the flexible paper plastic composites (PPC) were also fabricated from the rest thin PE coating with the stuck fibers, and it was found that PPC showed excellent mechanical property and hydrophobicity. Consequently, a feasible and eco-friendly process of recycling and reusing waste disposable paper cups was developed to achieve a complete utilization and valorization of waste disposable paper cups.

Abstract
In this study, cellulose-based superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), acrylic acid (AA), and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) to enhance its water absorbency and salt tolerance for soil-conditioning applications in areas suffering from drought and soil salinization. Superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) were prepared by CMC-Na and AMPS successfully, using chemical graft technology. Structure, morphology, thermal stability, and water absorbency of SHs were deduced. The cellulose-based hydrogel showed a high salt tolerance that the maximum water absorbency reached 604 and 119% in distilled water and saline water, respectively. The swelling behavior in aqueous solvents indicated that the water absorption of hydrogels was improved with the increasing ratio of CMC-Na. All SHs exhibited adsorption of nitrogen with the maximum adsorption of ammonia nitrogen 30 mg·g-1 and the presence of hydrogels could slow down the loss of nutrients in the soil. This study provided a feasible strategy that AMPS was substituted by CMC-Na to synthesize SHs with strong water absorbency and high salt tolerance which could be efficiently applied in agriculture as a soil conditioner.

Fabrication and Characterization of Transparent and Uniform Cellulose/Polyethylene Composite Films from Used Disposable Paper Cups by the "One-Pot Method". Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14061070. Abstract
Disposable paper cups are usually composed of high-grade paper board and an inner polyethylene coatings and are extensively used in daily life. However, most disposable paper cups are only used for a short time and then incinerated or accumulated in landfill at the end of their service due to the difficulty in separating the components, leading to a serious threat to our ecosystem. Therefore, developing a facile and green method to recycle and reuse disposable paper cups is vital. By using ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) as a solvent, transparent and homogenous cellulose/polyethylene composite films were successfully prepared from used bamboo-based disposable paper cups through the "one-pot method", without any pre-treatment. It was found that there was a transformation of cellulose I to II after the dissolution and regeneration processes, and the crystallinity degree of the regenerated cellulose-based materials decreased significantly, resulting in a change in thermal properties. Meanwhile, compared to traditional pure cellulose films, the composite films possessed good UV-shielding properties and hydrophobicity. Moreover, they also displayed good mechanical properties. Additionally, the size of the ground PE coatings displayed obvious effects on the structures and properties of the composite films, where the CPE100 (sieved with 100-200 mesh) possessed the most homogeneous texture and the highest tensile strength (82 Mpa), higher than that of commercial polyethylene film (9-12 MPa), showing superiority as packaging or wrapping materials. Consequently, the goals to fabricate uniform cellulose/polyethylene composite films and valorize the solid waste from disposable paper cups were simultaneously achieved by a facile and green "one-pot method".

Abstract
We prepared super-hydrophobic nanocellulose films using a non-toxic octadecylamine/polydopamine system. Octadecylamine, a low surface energy material, was used to provide hydrophobic alkyl long chains. Polydopamine was produced by dopamine under alkaline conditions, creating an adhesive substance, which reinforced the hydrophobic long chains and increased the surface roughness of nanocellulose. The effects of reagent concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time on hydrophobicity were then investigated. The results showed that with a 1:1 mass ratio of nanocellulose to octadecylamine, and reacting at 60 °C for 4 h, the contact angle of the obtained composite membrane reached 168.2°. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that the modified nanocellulose had a smaller particle size and more uniform distribution, which effectively improved the hydrophobicity of the nanocellulose. Thus, the green preparation of superhydrophobic films with high-temperature resistance and wear resistance was realized, which contributed to the high-value utilization of nanocellulose.

Transparent cellulose/aramid nanofibers films with improved mechanical and ultraviolet shielding performance from waste cotton textiles by in-situ fabrication. Carbohydr Polym 2021; 273:118569. Abstract
Cellulose films with biodegradability and intrinsically antistatic property have many applications. However, conventional cellulose films show poor toughness and UV-shielding property, and the major sources are high-grade cotton linter or wood pulp. Herein, by using low-cost waste cotton textiles as the raw materials, we successfully fabricated transparent cellulose/aramid nanofibers (ANFs) films, in which in-situ retained ANFs had a diameter of 20-30 nm and a length of several micrometers. Because ANFs and cellulose chains formed strong hydrogen bonding interactions, the tensile strength and elongation of the resultant cellulose/ANFs film with 1.0 wt% ANFs could reach 54.4 MPa and 15.8%, respectively, increased by 63.4% and 154% compared to those of pure cellulose film (33.3 MPa and 6.2%). Meanwhile, the cellulose/ANFs films show excellent UV-shielding properties and irradiation stability. Hence, the novel cellulose/ANFs films with improved mechanical and UV-shielding performance were in-situ prepared leading to enhance the valorization of waste cotton textiles.

Transparent Cellulose-Based Films Prepared from Used Disposable Paper Cups via an Ionic Liquid. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13234209. Abstract
Paper cups are widely employed in daily life with many advantages, but most of the used paper cups are incinerated or landfilled, due to the great challenge of separating the thin inner polyethylene (PE) coating, causing the waste of energy and the pollution of our environment. Therefore, recycling and converting the used paper cups into high-value materials is meaningful and important. In this work, transparent cellulose-based films were successfully prepared from the used paper cups via 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid after simple pretreatment. Additionally, the difference in properties and structures of cellulose-based films regenerated in different coagulation baths (water or ethanol) was also explored. It was found that the cellulose-based film possessed good thermal property and displayed better hydrophobicity than the traditional pure cellulose film. Moreover, they also demonstrated good mechanical property and the tensile strength of cellulose-based film regenerated in water can reach 31.5 Mpa, higher than those of cellulose-based film regenerated in ethanol (25.5 Mpa) and non-degradable polyethylene film (9-12 MPa), indicating their great potential as the packaging materials. Consequently, valorization of the low cost used paper cups and preparation of high-valve cellulose-based films were realized simultaneously by a facile and green process.

Abstract
After entering in water, Fe3+ is enriched in the human body and along the food chain, causing chronic poisoning and irreversible harm to human health. In order to solve this problem, we synthesized citric acid POSS (CAP) from aminopropyl POSS (OAP) and citric acid. Then, we synthesized fluorescent hydrogels (CAP-agarose hydrogel, CAHG) with CAP and agarose. The luminescence mechanism of CAP was investigated by theoretical calculation. CAP plays a dual role in composite hydrogels: one is to give the gels good fluorescence properties and detect Fe3+; the second is that the surface of CAP has a large content of carbonyl and amide groups, so it can coordinate with Fe3+ to enhance the adsorption properties of hydrogels. The experimental results show that the lowest Fe3+ concentration that CAHG can detect is 5 μmol/L, and the adsorption capacity for Fe3+ is about 26.75 mg/g. In a certain range, the fluorescence intensity of CAHG had an exponential relation with Fe3+ concentration, which is expected to be applied to fluorescence sensors. Even at a lower concentration, CAHG can effectively remove Fe3+ from the solution. The prepared fluorescent hydrogel has great potential in the field of fluorescent probes, fluorescent sensors, and ion adsorption. Besides, CAHG can be used as photothermal material after adsorbing Fe3+, allowing for material recycling and reducing material waste.

Cellulose-Based Films with Ultraviolet Shielding Performance Prepared Directly from Waste Corrugated Pulp. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13193359. [PMID: 34641187 PMCID: PMC8512157 DOI: 10.3390/polym13193359] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/25/2021] [Revised: 09/22/2021] [Accepted: 09/27/2021] [Indexed: 02/06/2023] Open
Abstract
As the most important paper packaging materials, corrugated cartons with a tremendous amount of production demonstrate several advantages and have been widely used in daily life. However, waste corrugated cartons (WCCs) are usually recycled and reused to produce new corrugated cartons, and their properties are decreased dramatically after several cycles. Therefore, recycling and converting WCCs into cellulose-based film with high value is attractive and significant. Herein, without any pretreatment, the waste old corrugated cartons were directly dissolved in ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, and semitransparent cellulose-based films were successfully fabricated. It was indicated that cellulose-based films displayed better UV-shielding property and hydrophobicity than traditional cellulose films. Interestingly, the cellulose-based films regenerated from deionized water displayed higher tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness. Their tensile strength could reach 23.16 MPa, exhibiting enormous superiority as wrapping and packaging materials to replace the petrochemical polyethylene membrane (8.95 MPa). Consequently, these renewable, biodegradable, and high-valued cellulose-based films were successfully fabricated to simultaneously realize the valorization of old corrugated cartons and supplement the petrochemical plastics.
