Preparation of Environmentally Friendly Oil- and Water-Resistant Paper Using Holo-Lignocellulosic Nanofibril (LCNF)-Based Composite Coating

In the present study, an environmentally friendly oil- and water-resistant paper was developed using a holo-lignocellulosic nanofibril (LCNF)-based composite coating. The LCNF was prepared from wheat straw using a biomechanical method. Characterizations of oil- and water-resistant coated paper and the effect of LCNF content on the performance of the coated paper were confirmed by combining contact angle analysis, Cobb 300s, and mechanical performance tests. The results show that the barrier performance and mechanical strength of the coated paper were greatly improved with the increase of LCNF content. The contact angle of oil and water of coated paper containing 50% LCNF were 69° and 78°, respectively, while the contact angle of oil and water of the base paper were only 30° and 20°, respectively. Cobb 300s values reduced from 110 g/m2 to 30 g/m2 when the LCNF content increased from 50% to 90%. Moreover, under the coating amount of 20 g/m2, the tensile strength of the coating paper was 0.980 KN/m, an increase of 10.11% compared with the base paper. The bursting strength reached 701.930 KPa, which was 10.75% higher than the base paper. In short, it is feasible to prepare LCNF from wheat straw, and apply it to produce water-proof and oil-proof paper. The water-proof and oil-proof paper developed in this study not only offers a novel approach to addressing white pollution but also presents a new research avenue for exploring the potential applications of agricultural waste.

Transparent, super stretchable, freezing-tolerant, self-healing ionic conductive cellulose based eutectogel for multi-functional sensors

In this study, we propose a non - toxic and low-cost fabrication of cellulose-based eutectogel through the ZnCl2/H2O/H3PO4 deep eutectic solvent (DES) to dissolve cellulose followed by free-radical polymerization of acrylamide. Particularly, the introduction of cellulose enhances the mechanical properties of eutectogels while eliminating the environmental concerns of the traditional nanocellulose fabrication process. Owing to the dynamic transfer of ions in the eutectogel network, the prepared eutectogels exhibit adjustable conductivity (0.9- 1.37 Sm-1, 15 °C) and stretching sensitivity (Gauge factor = 5.4). The resulting DES - cellulose-based eutectogels (DCEs) exhibited ultra stretchability (4086 %), high toughness (261.3 MJ/m3), excellent ionic conductivity (1.64 Sm-1, 20 °C), high transparency (>85 %), outstanding antifreezing performance (<-80 °C), and other comprehensive characteristics. The DCEs had been proven to have multiple sensitivities to external stimuli, like temperature, strain, and pressure. As a result, the DCEs can be assembled into multifunctional sensors. Moreover, this work also demonstrated the satisfactory performance of DCEs in flexible electroluminescent devices. The low cost and high efficiency made the preparation method of this experiment an efficient strategy for developing high-performance cellulose-based eutectogels, which would greatly promote the application of such materials in areas such as artificial skin for soft robots and other wearable devices.

Characterization of microcrystalline cellulose prepared from long and short fibers and its application in ibuprofen tablets

As a bio-based material, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) has been applied in many fields including pharmaceuticals, foods, and cosmetics in recent years. However, traditional preparation methods of MCC are facing many challenges due to economic and eco-environmental issues. In this study, softwood dissolved pulp was sieved to long fiber (LF) and short fiber (SF), and subsequently to prepare LF-MCC and SF-MCC by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis at different acid dosages (3-7 wt%), reaction times (30-90 min), and temperatures (75-95 °C). The as-obtained MCC products were compared in terms of morphology, size, crystallinity, and chemical structure. The results indicated that the crystallinity and yield of LF-MCC were high, with maximum values of 78.41 % and 98.68 %, respectively. The particle size distribution of SF-MCC was more uniform in the range of 20-80 μm, with a maximum of 59.44 % at 20-80 μm occupancy proportion. Moreover, SF-MCC had a typical rod-like shape and larger surface area as well as better thermal behavior than LF-MCC. When LF-MCC and SF-MCC were used as fillers in the production of ibuprofen tablets, the tablets added with LF-MCC exhibited higher hardness, friability, dissolution rate, and shorter disintegration time. Therefore, this work is very beneficial for the preparation and application of MCC.

Biodegradable, Strong, and Hydrophobic Regenerated Cellulose Films Enriched with Esterified Lignin Nanoparticles

The scientific community is pursuing significant efforts worldwide to develop environmentally viable film materials from biomass, particularly transparent, high-performance regenerated cellulose (RC) films, to replace traditional plastics. However, the inferior mechanical performance and hydrophilic nature of RC films are generally not suitable for use as a substitute for plastics in practical applications. Herein, lignin homogenization is used to synthesize high-performance composite films. The esterified lignin nanoparticles (ELNPs) with dispersible and binding advantages are prepared through esterification and nanometrization. In the presence of ELNPs, RC films exhibit a higher tensile strength (110.4 MPa), hydrophobic nature (103.6° water contact angle, 36.6% water absorption at 120 min, and 1.127 × 10-12 g cm cm-2 s-1 Pa-1 water vapor permeability), and exciting optical properties (high visible and low ultraviolet transmittance). The films further display antioxidant activity, oxygen barrier ability, and thermostability. The films completely biodegrade at 12 and 30% soil moisture. Overall, this study offers new insights into lignin valorization and regenerated cellulose composite films as novel bioplastic materials.

Diagnostic value of dynamic contrast enhancement combined with conventional MRI in differentiating benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours

AIM

To establish the diagnostic value of the quantitative parameters of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with conventional MRI in differentiating of benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis of primary lacrimal gland epithelial tumours confirmed by histopathology was conducted. Conventional MRI features and DCE-MRI quantitative parameters were collected and subjected to analysis. The diagnostic value was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 53 patients were enrolled of which 29 had malignant, whereas 24 had benign tumours. Conventional MRI revealed statistically significant differences between benign and malignant tumours regarding maximum tumour diameter, posterior margin characteristic, bone destruction, and erosion. The Ktrans and Kep values obtained by DCE-MRI were higher in malignant than in benign tumours, with a statistically significant (p<0.001 and p=0.022). A type I time-signal intensity (TIC) curve was more frequent in benign tumours, whereas a type II TIC curve was prevalent in malignant tumours (p=0.001). ROC analysis showed that Ktrans had the best diagnostic value of the DCE-MRI parameters (area under the ROC curve [AUC] of 0.822, 75.9% sensitivity, and 83.3% specificity, p<0.001). The combination of conventional MRI and DCE-MRI factors had the best diagnostic value and balanced sensitivity and specificity (AUC of 0.948, 93.1% sensitivity, and 91.7% specificity, p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The present findings indicate that the combination of quantitative parameters of DCE-MRI and image characteristics of conventional MRI have a high diagnostic value for the diagnosis of benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours.

Enhancing photocatalytic destruction of lignin via cellulose derived carbon quantum dots/g-C3N4 heterojunctions

Lignocellulosic biomass exhibits a promising potential for production of carbon materials. Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,P-CQDs) were fabricated via (NH4)2HPO4 assisted hydrothermal treatment of cellulose pulp fibers. The as-prepared N,P-CQDs were characterized by HRTEM, FTIR, fluorescence and UV-vis, and then incorporated into g-C3N4 (CN) through sonication and liquid deposition, forming N,P-CQDs/sonication treated g-C3N4 (C-SCN) composites, which were then explored as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic ability of C-SCN towards model lignin was further analyzed. The results showed that, the fluorescence intensity and photoluminescence performance of N,P-CQDs were much higher than that of CQDs; the heterojunction was successfully constructed between the composites of N,P-CQDs and SCN; the incorporation of N,P-CQDs enhanced the visible light absorption, but reduced the band gap of the composite heterojunction; the resultant photocatalysts exhibited a good photocatalytic ability of model lignin via catalyze the fracture of β-O-4' ether bond and CC bond, i.e., the photocatalytic degradation ratio reached up to 95.5 %; and the photocatalytic reaction generated some valuable organics such as phenyl formate, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid. This study would promote the high value-added utilization of lignocellulosic resources especially in the transformation of lignin, conforming the concept of sustainable development.

[Characteristics and clinical analysis of MLH1 c.463dupC gene mutation in a Lynch syndrome family]

In this study, a case of Lynch syndrome (LS) family line with a novel mutation site in the MLH1 c.463dupC gene was reported and the clinical and pathogenic genetic features of this family were analyzed. A 40-year-old female patient with colon cancer diagnosed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University on October 2, 2020 was retrospectively included. The clinical data of the family were collected and the family lineage was drawn. The family tumor history met the Amsterdam Criteria Ⅱ and the diagnostic criteria of LS in Chinese, which was a typical LS family lineage. A germline code-shift missense mutation c.463dupC in the MLH1 gene located in exon 6, a possible pathogenic variant, was detected by second-generation sequencing (NGS) in the patient. Subsequently, Sanger sequencing was performed on a total of 20 direct lineage members of the family of the MLH1 gene, 7 cases were found to harbor the mutation and included in the LS high-risk control. Follow-up to October 2023 showed that the patient had endometrial and cervical polyps, one case had colorectal cancer, and two cases had intestinal polyps, all were treated with early intervention and therapy; two cases did not show any clinical symptoms. This study is the first to report a new mutation site for the potentially pathogenic MLH1 c.463dupC, providing a rationale for the pathogenicity of the mutation and standardized health management for familial carriers.

Lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment with a lignin stabilization strategy and valorization toward multipurpose fractionation

Lignocellulosic biomass has emerged as a promising alternative with sustainable advantages for the production of a wide range of renewable products and value-added chemicals. In this study, a pretreatment strategy that use a fully recyclable acid hydrotrope (p-TsOH aqueous solution) to extract lignin and employ glyoxylic acid (GA) to stabilize lignin was proposed for biomass valorization toward multipurpose fractionation. 83.0 % of lignin was dissolved out by p-TsOH hydrotrope (80 wt%) with GA addition to form GA-stabilized product at 80 o C for 15 min. The stabilized lignin was subsequently used as an additive in the preparation of lignin-based suncream. Notably, the incorporation of 4 wt% lignin nanospheres into an SPF15 sunscreen yielded a measured SPF of 59.94. Furthermore, the depolymerization of uncondensed lignin into aromatic monomers yielded a high lignin-oil yield of 84.2 %. Additionally, direct heating of the pretreatment liquor facilitated the conversion of monosaccharides into furfural, achieving a desired yield of 53.7 % without the addition of any acid catalyst. The pretreatment also enhanced the enzymatic hydrolysis of glucan, resulting in a saccharification yield of 98.4 %. Moreover, short-term ultrasonication of the pretreated substrate yielded pulp suitable for papermaking. Incorporating 15 wt% fibers into the produced paper sheets led to a 5.3 % increase in tear index and a 25.4 % increase in tensile index. This study presents a viable pretreatment strategy for the multipurpose fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, offering potential avenues for biomass valorization.

Schiff base and coordinate bonds cross-linked chitosan-based eutectogels with ultrafast self-healing, self-adhesive, and anti-freezing capabilities for motion detection

Ion conductors offer great potential for diverse electric applications. However, most of the ion conductors were fabricated from non - degradable petroleum-based polymers with non or low biodegradability, which inevitably leads to resource depletion and waste accumulation. Fabricating ion conductors based on renewable, and sustainable materials is highly desirable and valuable. Herein, a series of eutectogels were designed through dual-dynamic-bond cross-linking among ferric iron (Fe3+), protocatechualdehyde (PA), and chitosan (CS) in 1 - allyl-3 - methylimidazole chloride ionic liquid/urea (AmimCl/urea) eutectic-based ionic liquid. Due to the presence of AmimCl/urea eutectic-based ionic liquid, the obtained CS - PA@Fe eutectogels showed excellent ionic conductivity, superior anti-freezing properties that could maintain flexibility and high electrical properties at -20 °C. Dual-dynamic-bond cross-linking of catechol-Fe coordinate and dynamic Schiff base bonds equip CS - PA@Fe eutectogels with excellent injectable, and self-healing abilities. Additionally, due to the presence of phenolic hydroxyl groups of PA, the obtained CS - PA@Fe eutectogels present good adhesiveness. Based on the CS - PA@Fe eutectogels, multifunctional flexible strain sensors with high sensitivity, stability, as well as rapid response speed at wide operating temperature ranges were successfully fabricated. Thus, this study offers a promising strategy for fabricating naturally occurring biopolymers based eutectogels, which show great potential as high-performance flexible strain sensors for next-generation wearable electronic devices.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Production of Lignin-Derived Functional Material for Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption with an Ultralow Filler Ratio

Industrial lignin, a by-product of pulping for papermaking fibers or of second-generation ethanol production, is primarily served as a low-grade combustible energy source. The fabrication of high-value-added functional materials with industrial lignin is still a challenge. Herein, a three-dimensional hierarchical lignin-derived porous carbon (HLPC) was prepared with lignosulfonate as the carbon source and MgCO3 as the template. The uniform mixing of precursor and template agent resulted in the construction of a three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure. HLPC presented excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. With a low filler content of 7 wt%, HLPC showed a minimum reflection loss (RL) value of -41.8 dB (1.7 mm, 13.8 GHz), and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.53 GHz (1.6 mm). In addition, the enhancement mechanism of HLPC for EMW absorption was also explored through comparing the morphology and electromagnetic parameters of lignin-derived carbon (LC) and lignin-derived porous carbon (LPC). The three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure endowed the carbon with a high pore volume, resulting in an abundant gas-solid interface between air and carbon for interfacial polarization. This structure also provided conductive networks for conduction loss. This work offers a strategy to synthesize biomass-based carbon for high-performance EMW absorption.

Recent advances in sustainable preparation of cellulose nanocrystals via solid acid hydrolysis: A mini-review

As a green and renewable nanomaterial, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have received numerous attention due to the unique structural features and superior physicochemical properties. Conventionally, CNC was isolated from lignocellulosic biomass mostly depending on sulfuric or hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. Although this approach is effective, some critical issues such as severe equipment corrosion, excessive cellulose degradation, serious environmental pollution, and large water usage are inevitable. Fortunately, solid acid hydrolysis is emerging as an economical and sustainable CNC production technique and has achieved considerable progress in recent years. Herein, the preparation of CNC by solid acid hydrolysis was summarized systematically, including organic solid acids (citric, maleic, oxalic, tartaric, p-toluenesulfonic acid) and inorganic solid acids (phosphotungstic, phosphoric, and Lewis acid). The advantages and disadvantages of organic and inorganic solid acid hydrolysis methods were evaluated comprehensively. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in the later exploitation and application of solid acid hydrolysis to prepare CNC in the industrial context are discussed. Considering the future development of this technology in the large-scale CNC production, much more efforts should be made in lowering CNC processing cost, fabricating high-solid-content and re-dispersible CNC, developing value-added applications of CNC, and techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment on the whole process.

Lignin Nanoparticles Produced from Wheat Straw Black Liquor Using γ-Valerolactone

The valorization of the black liquor produced during the chemical pulping of wheat straw is the key to the sustainable use of this abundant agricultural waste. However, the silica problem has hampered the recovery process. Herein, nanoprecipitation technology was used to produce lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) from wheat straw black liquor using γ-valerolactone (GVL) as a solvent and water as an anti-solvent. The results showed that a uniform, well-dispersed, and stable LNP was produced. The particle size and Zeta potential of 161 nm and -24 mV of the LNP suspension were obtained at a GVL concentration of 87%. The chemical structure and bonding of the lignin were adequately preserved after nanoprecipitation based on two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-HSQC NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, and thermal stability was improved based on thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, the abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups of LNP quantified by 31P-NMR analysis are beneficial for chemical cross-linking and modification. This work not only achieved the valorization of wheat straw black liquor but also opened up a new avenue for advanced nanomaterials.

Super-stretching and high-performance ionic thermoelectric hydrogels based on carboxylated bacterial cellulose coordination for self-powered sensors

Self-powered sensors that do not require external power sources are crucial for next-generation wearable electronics. As environment-friendly ionic thermoelectric hydrogels can continuously convert the low-grade heat of human skin into electricity, they can be used in intelligent human-computer interaction applications. However, their low thermoelectric output power, cycling stability, and sensitivity limit their practical applications. This paper reports a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized carboxylated bacterial cellulose (TOBC) coordination double-network ionic thermoelectric hydrogel with lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (LiTFSI) as an ion provider for thermodiffusion, as LiTFSI exhibits excellent thermoelectric properties with a maximum power output of up to 538 nW at a temperature difference of 20 K. The interactions between the ions and the hydrogel matrix promote the selective transport of conducting ionic ions, producing a high Seebeck coefficient of 11.53 mV K-1. Hydrogen bonding within the polyacrylamide (PAAm) network and interactions within the borate ester bond within the TOBC confer excellent mechanical properties to the hydrogel such that the stress value at a tensile deformation of 3100 % is reaches 0.85 MPa. The combination of the high ionic thermovoltage and excellent mechanical properties ionic thermoelectric hydrogels provides an effective solution for the design and application of self-powered sensors based on hydrogels.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

Waterproof and ultrasensitive paper-based wearable strain/pressure sensor from carbon black/multilayer graphene/carboxymethyl cellulose composite

Huge electronic wastes motivated the flourishing of biodegradable electrically conductive cellulosic paper-based functional materials as flexible wearable devices. However, the relatively low sensitivity and unstable output in combination with poor wet strength under high moisture circumstances impeded the practical application. Herein, a superhydrophobic cellulosic paper with ultrahigh sensitivity was proposed by innovatively employing ionic sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as bridge to reinforce the interfacial interaction between carbon black (CB) and multilayer graphene (MG) and SiO₂ nanoparticles as superhydrophobic layer. The resultant paper-based (PB) sensor displayed excellent strain sensing behaviors, wide working range (-1.0 %-1.0 %), ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 70.2), and satisfied durability (>10,000 cycles). Moreover, the superhydrophobic surface offered well waterproof and self-cleaning properties, even stable running data without encapsulation under extremely high moisture conditions. Impressively, when the fabricated PB sensor was applied for electronic-skin (E-skin), the signal capture of spatial strain of E-skin upon bodily motion was breezily achieved. Thus, our work not only provides a new pathway for reinforcing the interfacial interaction of electrically conductive carbonaceous materials, but also promises a category of unprecedentedly superhydrophobic cellulosic paper-based strain sensors with ultra-sensitivity in human-machine interfaces field.

Effect of dietary lutein on the egg production, fertility, and oxidative injury indexes of aged hens

OBJECTIVE

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary lutein on egg production, follicles, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, and oxidative injury indexes of hens.

METHODS

Treatments consisted of a control diet (CON) and three lutein-supplementing diets at 25 (L1), 50 (L2), or 75 (L3) mg/kg of diet. Egg production was measured using 576 Arbor Acres breeder hens at 61 to 65 wk and follicles grades, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, tissue lutein contents, and oxidative injury indexes were determined at 65 wk.

RESULTS

The results showed that at 65 wk, lutein- supplementing diets increased (p<0.05) egg production, follicular grades, fertility, hatchability, estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone, progesterone (PROG), lutein content in the serum and yolk, compared to CON. L2 and L3 showed more pronounced (p<0.05) effects on egg production, PROG, and yolk lutein content than L1. With the increase of lutein doses from 25 to 75 mg/kg, there were linear increases (p<0.05) in egg production, lutein content, and PROG, and a quadratic trend (p<0.05) in E2. For the oxidative injury products, lutein-supplementing diets decreased (p<0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) in the serum, MDA and 8-hydroxy 2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in the yolk. There were linear decreases (p<0.05) in 8-OHdG in the serum, MDA, PCO, and 8-OHdG in the yolk, a quadratic trend (p<0.05) on serum 8-OHdG.

CONCLUSION

It is concluded that lutein supplementation can improve egg production and fertility by beneficially regulating reproductive hormones and oxidative status in aged hens.

[Expression changes of NaV channel subunits correlate with developmental maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the variations in the expression of voltage-gated sodium (Na_v) channel subunits during development of rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons and their correlation with maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of the neurons.

METHODS

We observed the changes in the expression levels of Na_V1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 during the development of Purkinje neurons using immunohistochemistry in neonatal (5-7 days after birth), juvenile (12-14 days), adolescent (21-24 days), and adult (42-60 days) SD rats. Using whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we recorded the spontaneous electrical activity of the neurons in ex vivo brain slices of rats of different ages to analyze the changes of electrophysiological characteristics of these neurons during development.

RESULTS

The expression of Na_V subunits in rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons showed significant variations during development. Na_V1.1 subunit was highly expressed throughout the developmental stages and increased progressively with age (P < 0.05). Na_V1.2 expression was not detected in the neurons in any of the developmental stages (P > 0.05). The expression level of Na_V1.3 decreased with development and became undetectable after adolescence (P < 0.05). Na_V1.6 expression was not detected during infancy, but increased with further development (P < 0.05). Na_V1.1 and Na_V1.3 were mainly expressed in the early stages of development. With the maturation of the rats, Na_V1.3 expression disappeared and Na_V1.6 expression increased in the neurons. Na_V1.1 and Na_V1.6 were mainly expressed after adolescence. The total Na_V protein level increased gradually with development (P < 0.05) and tended to stabilize after adolescence. The spontaneous frequency and excitability of the Purkinje neurons increased gradually with development and reached the mature levels in adolescence. The developmental expression of Na_V subunits was positively correlated with discharge frequency (r=0.9942, P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with the excitatory threshold of the neurons (r=0.9891, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The changes in the expression levels of Na_V subunits are correlated with the maturation of high frequency electrophysiological properties of the neurons, suggesting thatmature Na_V subunit expressions is the basis of maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of the neurons.

Final Measurement of the ^{235}U Antineutrino Energy Spectrum with the PROSPECT-I Detector at HFIR

This Letter reports one of the most precise measurements to date of the antineutrino spectrum from a purely ^{235}U-fueled reactor, made with the final dataset from the PROSPECT-I detector at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. By extracting information from previously unused detector segments, this analysis effectively doubles the statistics of the previous PROSPECT measurement. The reconstructed energy spectrum is unfolded into antineutrino energy and compared with both the Huber-Mueller model and a spectrum from a commercial reactor burning multiple fuel isotopes. A local excess over the model is observed in the 5-7 MeV energy region. Comparison of the PROSPECT results with those from commercial reactors provides new constraints on the origin of this excess, disfavoring at 2.0 and 3.7 standard deviations the hypotheses that antineutrinos from ^{235}U are solely responsible and noncontributors to the excess observed at commercial reactors, respectively.

Quantitative cardiac MRI parameters for assessment of myocarditis in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To evaluate the role of quantitative cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) parameters in myocarditis, including acute and chronic myocarditis (AM and CM), for children and adolescents.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PRISMA principles were followed. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and grey literature were searched. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) checklist were utilised for quality assessment. Quantitative CMRI parameters were extracted and a meta-analysis was performed in comparison with healthy controls. The overall effect size was measured as the weighted mean difference (WMD).

RESULTS

Ten quantitative CMRI parameters of seven studies were analysed. Compared with the control group, the myocarditis group reported longer native T1 relaxation time (WMD=54.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 33.21,74.79, p<0.001), longer T2 relaxation time (WMD=2.13, 95% CI: 0.98, 3.28, p<0.001), increased extracellular volume (ECV; WMD=3.13, 95% CI: 1.34,4.91, p=0.001), elevated early gadolinium enhancement (EGE) ratio (WMD=1.47, 95% CI: 0.65,2.28, p<0.001), and increased T2-weighted ratio (WMD=0.43, 95% CI: 0.21,0.64, p<0.001). The AM group had longer native T1 relaxation times (WMD=72.02, 95% CI: 32.78,111.27, p<0.001), increased T2-weighted ratios (WMD=0.52, 95% CI: 0.21,0.84 p=0.001), and impaired left ventricular ejection fractions (LVEF; WMD=-5.84, 95% CI: -9.69, -1.99, p=0.003). Impaired LVEF (WMD=-2.24, 95% CI: -3.32, -1.17, p<0.001) was observed in the CM group.

CONCLUSION

Statistical differences can be observed in some CMRI parameters between patients with myocarditis and healthy controls; however, apart from native T1 mapping, there were no large differences in other parameters between two groups, which may reveal the limited benefit of CMRI in assessing myocarditis in children and adolescents.

First Measurement of Quasielastic Λ Baryon Production in Muon Antineutrino Interactions in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the main injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10^{20} protons on target running in neutrino mode, and 4.9×10^{20} protons on target running in anti-neutrino mode. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.0_{-1.7}^{+2.2}×10^{-40}  cm^{2}/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.

Production of nanocellulose using acidic deep eutectic solvents based on choline chloride and carboxylic acids: A review

Nowadays, nanocellulose production processes with numerous merits of green, eco-friendly, and cost-effective are in urgent need. Acidic deep eutectic solvent (ADES), as an emerging green solvent, has been widely applied in the preparation of nanocellulose over the past few years, owing to its unique advantages, including non-toxicity, low cost, easy synthesis, recyclability, and biodegradability. At present, several studies have explored the effectiveness of ADESs in nanocellulose production, particularly those based on choline chloride (ChCl) and carboxylic acids. Various acidic deep eutectic solvents have been employed, with representative ones such as ChCl-oxalic/lactic/formic/acetic/citric/maleic/levulinic/tartaric acid. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the latest progress of these ADESs, focusing on the treatment procedures and key superiorities. In addition, the challenges and outlooks of ChCl/carboxylic acids-based DESs implementation in the fabrication of nanocellulose were discussed. Finally, some suggestions were proposed to advance the industrialization of nanocellulose, which would help for the roadmap of sustainable and large-scale production of nanocellulose.

A morphology control engineered strategy of Ti3C2Tx/sulfated cellulose nanofibril composite film towards high-performance flexible supercapacitor electrode

2D Ti₃C₂T_x MXene is an ideal material for fabricating supercapacitor electrodes due to its excellent physical-chemical properties. However, the inherent self-stacking, narrow interlayer spacing, and low general mechanical strength limit its application in flexible supercapacitors. Herein, facile structural engineering strategies by drying (vacuum drying, freeze drying, and spin drying) were proposed to fabricate 3D high-performance Ti₃C₂T_x/sulfated cellulose nanofibril (SCNF) self-supporting film supercapacitor electrodes. Compared with other composite films, the freeze-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film exhibited a looser interlayer structure with more space which was conducive to charge storage and ion transport in the electrolyte. Therefore, the freeze-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film exhibited a higher specific capacitance (220 F/g) compared to the vacuum-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film (191 F/g) and the spin-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film (211 F/g). After 5000 cycles, the capacitance retention rate of the freeze-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF film electrode was close to 100 %, showing excellent cycle performance. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of freeze-dried Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film (13.7 MPa) was much greater than that of the pure film (7.4 MPa). This work demonstrated a facile strategy for control of Ti₃C₂T_x/SCNF composite film interlayer structure by drying for fabricating well-designed structured flexible and free-standing supercapacitor electrodes.

Viscosity & SO2-sensitive dual colorimetric effect fluorescent sensor enabled imaging detection within plant onion and biological system

The biological microenvironment includes important parameters such as viscosity, polarity, temperature, oxygen content and pH. In particular, abnormal cell viscosity is associated with the development of major diseases. Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) serves not only as an essential atmospheric pollutant but also an influential signalling molecule in biological cells, predisposing individuals to increased respiratory disease. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe CouCN-V&S with dual response to micro environmental viscosity and SO₂. The probe monitored viscosity and SO₂ separately through dual emission channels with a difference of 135 nm. The probe responded sensitively to SO₂ (<1s) and exhibited satisfactory immunity to interference and pH stability. The probe was successfully applied to imaging cellular, intra-zebrafish viscosity and SO₂ changes. Interestingly, we took onion epidermal cells as model and explored the capability of probe CouCN-V&S to image SO₂ in plant cells for the first time.

Cellulose-based superhydrophobic wrinkled paper and electrospinning film as green tribolayer for water wave energy harvesting

Water waves are viable low-carbon and renewable sources of power that can be optionally combined with triboelectric nanogeneration (TENG). Herein, we report on the synthesis of a TENG device based on green wrinkled paper tribolayers (W-TENG) assembled in grids (G-TENG) with channels that enable contact-separation modes involving metal balls that roll in phase with the waves. The paper's wrinkle wavelength and amplitude were adjusted by using a crepe blade at a given angle with respect to a drying cylinder, as well as the speed and torque. Polar hierarchical superhydrophobic cellulose micro/nanostructures, proposed as positive tribolayers with enhanced contact area and triboelectric density. The negative (biodegradable) tribolayers were prepared by electrospinning aqueous suspensions of polyvinyl alcohol and poly (ethylene oxide) reinforced with cellulose nanofibers. The charge transfer by the W-TENG reached up to 40 nC in air and retained 27 nC under 85 % relative humidity, ~5 and 7 times higher than those measured in planar TENG counterparts. A G-TENG array charging time (100-μF capacitor) of ~188 s was measured when the voltage of the capacitor raised to ~1.5 V. Overall, we introduce a new, scalable TENG system that is demonstrated for its remarkable ability to harvest blue energy.

π -Extended BTD derivatives: synthesis, photophysical properties, and applications in biological systems imaging for discriminating living and dead cells

Benzothiadiazole (BTD) is one of the popular compounds for organic electronic devices, organic synthesis, and fluorescent probes. Here, benzothiadiazole derivatives were successfully synthesized by heck coupling reaction, which exhibited the the advantages of simplicity and efficiency, wild substrate csope, easily available substrates and high yield. The fluorescent probe BTDAr-PEG targeting lipid droplets was successfully prepared by the nucleophilic substitution reaction between the heck coupling reaction product 3h and Amino polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (Mn=2000). BTDAr-PEG exhibited the advantages of high selectivity, good stability and pH resistance. The use of PEG as a substrate gave BTDAr-PEG good biocompatibility. It was worth mentioning that BTDAr-PEG could not only track LDs in cells under different physiological conditions, but also distinguish between living and dead cells in biological systems.

Design of AgNPs doped chitosan/sodium lignin sulfonate/polypyrrole films with antibacterial and endotoxin adsorption functions

There is an urgent need to develop materials to prevent bacterial infection and the deleterious effects of endotoxins. In this study, we introduce a one-step electrodeposition method to prepare films composed of chitosan/Ag/polypyrrole and layer-by-layer self-assembly to introduce lignin sulphonate (LS) to obtain chitosan/Ag/polypyrrole/LS films. Antibacterial effects against both E. coli and S. aureus are shown by bacterial growth profiles and observation of bacteriostatic zones. Meanwhile, the addition of self-assembled LS improved the antibacterial effect of the film. For E. coli, the inhibition zone diameter was 0.93 cm, while for S. aureus, the inhibition zone diameter was 0.72 cm. Rapid and efficient endotoxin adsorption effects were shown whereby the electrostatic interactions between chitosan and endotoxin molecules played a major role. After adsorption for 1 h, in initial concentration of 1 EU/mL endotoxin solution, the adsorption efficiency could reach up to 85 %, while in initial concentration of 5 EU/mL endotoxin solution, the adsorption efficiency could reach up to 87.6 %. The results suggest chitosan/Ag/polypyrrole/LS films for their capability as a new type of antibacterial film with intrinsic endotoxin adsorption activity.

High-performance carboxymethyl cellulose-based composite film tailored by versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework

Robust biopolymer-based composite film with multifunctional performances significantly contributes to the packaging field. Herein, we proposed a sort of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based composite film via incorporating versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials. Compared to pristine CMC film, the OTR, WVTR, and tensile strength of CMC/ZIF composite film with 1 wt ‰ Zn/Co-ZIF were improved from 64.89 cm³*μm/(m²*d*kPa), 1579.21 g/(m²*24h) and 16.9 MPa to 20.79 cm³*μm/(m²*d*kPa), 1209.58 g/(m²*24h) and 70.1 MPa, respectively. Notably, owing to the reduced band gap and intrinsic chemical and thermal stability of Zn/Co-ZIF, the fabricated Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC composite film presented well UV protection capability within the whole UV region and excellent UV-blocking durability after being exposed to UV-light at 365 nm for 12 h. In practice, the photocatalytic degradation of RhB solutions under UV light could be effectively suppressed when using Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC film as UV protection layer. Our findings proposed the potential application of these versatile ZIF materials as functional nanofiller within biopolymer substances for UV protection and transparent packaging area.

High mechanical property and antibacterial poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/functional enzymatically-synthesized cellulose biodegradable composite

Biodegradable materials with antibacterial properties are highly promising. A novel antimicrobial nanocellulose (ECP) was synthesized in one-step by enzyme-catalyzed method to improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(HB-co-HV)]. The biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending and the performance analysis results show that the nanocomposites display enhanced mechanical performances and antibacterial activities. Compared with the neat P(HB-co-HV), the P(HB-co-HV) doped with 0.5 wt%-ECP shows the highest mechanical properties with yield strength/elongation at break of 29.3 MPa, 7.63 %, respectively, an increase of 38 %/59 %, and a clear inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of approximately 3.0 mm. As a heterogeneous nucleation agent, ECP optimizes nucleation, and the interfacial interaction between phenol group and matrix promotes the compatibility and dispersion of ECP, resulting in superior mechanical properties of ECP-based composites. The P(HB-co-HV)/ECP nanocomposites have great potential in biomedical materials especially for the bone defect filling material.

First Constraints on Light Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Combined Appearance and Disappearance Searches with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the 3+1 active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current ν_{e} and ν_{μ} interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37×10^{20} protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the 95% confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2} and the sterile neutrino mixing angles θ_{μe} and θ_{ee}, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of ν_{e} appearance and ν_{e} disappearance effects due to the full 3+1 treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this Letter and will be addressed by future analyses.

All-biodegradable soy protein isolate/lignin composite cross-linked by oxidized sucrose as agricultural mulch films for green farming

Microplastics produced from the discarded traditional non-degradable mulch film deteriorate the ecological environment and pose a great threat to human health. Developing eco-friendly and biodegradable materials to substitute traditional plastic mulch film highly contributed to the progress of green agriculture. Herein, a category of eco-friendly and all-biodegradable soy protein isolate (SPI)/oxidized sucrose (OS)/Lignin mulch film was innovatively proposed by employing OS as green cross-linker and lignin as nanofiller under chemical/physical interaction. The cross-linking effect and hydrogen bonds between biopolymers act as sacrificial bonds for energy dissipation and effectively reinforced the intermolecular interactions as well as tensile strength from 6.67 MPa of pristine SPI film to 8.45 MPa of SPI/OS/Lignin film. Moreover, the SPI/OS/Lignin mulch film also presented excellent UV-shielding, moisture retention, heat preservation effect and sustained urea release properties. Benefitting from the above-mentioned merits, higher germination rate of cabbage seed was achieved when the natural soil was covered by such multifunctional mulch film compared to traditional low-density PE film. Our findings paved a solid way in rational designing and fabricating eco-friendly, low-cost and all-biodegradable mulch film to facilitate the crops growth, boosting the development of green farming.

Alleviating effect of mulberry leaf 1-deoxynojirimycin on resistin-induced hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in mice

Resistin is upregulated in obese humans and mice, and elevated serum resistin induces insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Previous studies have revealed that mulberry 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) is important for a variety of physiological processes, especially carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. However, it remains unclear whether DNJ has a positive effect on insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, and what the exact mechanism is. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with resistin with or without DNJ. DNJ reversed the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)-induced by resistin and significantly decreased triglyceride levels both in the serum and liver. A histological analysis demonstrated that lipid accumulation significantly decreased in the DNJ group compared to the resistin group. A mechanistic analysis showed that DNJ significantly inhibited the resistin-induced decline in enzyme activities of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and hepatic lipase (HL) in serum and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in liver. FAS and Acox13α were significantly altered by resistin but restored by DNJ. Furthermore, DNJ partially but significantly restored insulin-stimulated glucose uptake compared with the resistin group, suggesting that DNJ reversed the insulin sensitivity impaired by hyperresistinemia. Treatment of AML12 cells with DNJ significantly restored the expression level and phosphorylation of Akt. The transcriptional levels of InsR and IRS1, as well as the protein levels of InsR and Glut4 and phosphorylation of PI3K and GSK3β, were also normalized in the DNJ-treated group. In conclusion: mulberry DNJ significantly alleviated liver steatosis and insulin resistance in hyperresistinemia.

Fabrication of a Carbonized Cellulose Nanofibrils/Ti3C2Tx MXene/g-C3N4 Heterojunction for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis

Photocatalytic degrading pollutants driven by visible-light irradiation has attracted tremendous attention. One strategy of preparing carbonized cellulose nanofibrils/Ti₃C₂T_x MXene/g-C₃N₄ (CMCN) as a photocatalyst was developed. The as-prepared CMCN was comprehensively characterized in terms of the chemical composition, chemical and crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrochemical properties. The CMCN was explored as a photocatalyst and exhibited good photocatalytic performance in degrading MB (96.5%), RhB (95.4%), and TC (86.5%) under visible-light conditions. In addition, the CMCN as a photocatalyst exhibited good reusability and stability. It is found that the incorporation of cellulose nanofibrils provided a high carbon content, a high porosity, and a large specific surface area, enhanced the electron transfer, improved the photocatalytic performance, and ensured a semiconductor with a high stability. It is believed that this study would provide an effective approach to preparing a photocatalyst and broaden the potential application of cellulose nanofibrils in photocatalysis.

A xylan assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for rapid food safety detection

Cellulose fiber/paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is considered as a promising food safety detection technology due to its non-toxicity, low cost, flexibility, and hygroscopicity for possible rapid on-site agricultural product contaminant detection. However, it faces the problems of poor noble metal adhesion and toxic noble metal reducing agent. In this study, a natural macromolecule—xylan was used as both a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent to prepare stable Au-Ag bimetal nanoparticles, which were anchored on the paper surface by xylans in order to fabricate a paper-based Au-Ag bimetallic SERS substrate. The results show that the SERS substrate has a high Raman enhancement performance and reproductively. The substrate can effectively detect trace pesticide, i.e., thiram, and the limit of detection is as low as 1 × 10^–6 mol/L (0.24 ppm). In addition, the paper-based SERS substrate can be used for direct detection of pesticide residues on the surface of fruit. The paper-based SERS substrate developed in this study has great potential in applications for rapid food safety detection.

High performance bio-supercapacitor electrodes composed of graphitized hemicellulose porous carbon spheres

A template-free and one-step carbonization process was developed for fabricating graphitic porous carbon spheres (GPCSs) on hemicelluloses as the electrode material for supercapacitors. This method is green, low-energy, and less time consuming compared to the conventional two-step process (pore-forming and graphitizing). It uses K₂FeO₄, a mild activating agent that fulfills synchronous activation and graphitization. The GPCSs is regular spherical shape, have high nanoporosity, a large specific surface area (1,250 m2 g⁻¹), and have a high graphitization degree. A unique structural advantage includes a rich interconnected conductive network for electron transfer that shortens the ion transport distance of the electrolyte. Remarkably, the GPCSs electrode displays outstanding electrochemical performance including high specific capacitance (262 F g⁻¹ at 1.0 A g⁻¹), rate capability energy (80%, 20 A g⁻¹), and excellent cycling stability (95%, 10,000 cycles). This work represents a powerful methodology to develop sustainable and low-cost energy storage devices from hemicellulose.

Lignin-silver triggered multifunctional conductive hydrogels for skinlike sensor applications

Conductive hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention as a novel generation of wearable devices and body monitoring due to their great stretchability and high flexibility. Here, a multifunctional cellulose nanocrystal @sodium lignosulfonate-silver-poly(acrylamide) nanocomposite hydrogel was prepared by radical polymerization within only a few minutes. This polymerization rapidly occurred by lignosulfonate-silver (Ls-Ag) dynamic catalysis that efficiently activated ammonium persulfate (APS) to initiate the free-radical polymerization. In particular, the hydrogel exhibited excellent tensile strength (406 kPa), ultrahigh stretchability (1880 %), self-recovery, and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, due to the inclusion of Ls-Ag metal ion nanocomposite in the hydrogels, the composite hydrogel presented repeated adhesion to various objects, excellent conductivity (σ ∼ 9.5 mS cm^-1), remarkable UV resistance (100 % shielding of the UV spectral region), and high antibacterial activity (above 98 %), which enabled the hydrogel to be applied to epidermal sensors. In addition, the high-sensitivity (gauge factor of 2.46) sensor constructed of the hydrogel monitored the large and subtle movements of the human body and was used as a biological electrode to collect human electromyography and electrocardiographic signals. This work provided a novel strategy for the high-value utilization of lignin, which had potential application prospects in many fields such as wearable bioelectrodes.

Antifreezing Proton Zwitterionic Hydrogel Electrolyte via Ionic Hopping and Grotthuss Transport Mechanism toward Solid Supercapacitor Working at -50 °C

Hydrogel electrolyte is widely used in solid energy storage devices because of its high ionic conductivity, environmental friendliness, and non-leakage property. However, hydrogel electrolyte is not resistant to freezing. Here, a high proton conductive zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte with super conductivity of 1.51 mS cm^-1 at -50 °C is fabricated by random copolymerization of acrylamide and zwitterionic monomer in the presence of 1 m H₂ SO₄ and ethylene glycol (EG). The antifreezing performance and low temperature conductivity are ascribed to hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds between the components and water molecules in the system and can be tuned by changing the monomer ratio and EG contents. The proton hopping migration on the ionic group of the polymer chains and Grotthuss proton transport mechanism are responsible for the high proton conductivity while Grotthuss transport is dominated at the glassy state of the polymer chains. The electrolyte-assembled supercapacitor (SC) offers high specific capacitance of 93.5 F g^-1 at 25 °C and 62.0 F g^-1 at -50 °C with a capacitance retention of 91.1% and 81.5% after 10 000 cycles, respectively. The SC can even work at -70 °C. The electrolyte outperforms most reported antifreezing hydrogel electrolytes and has high potential in low-temperature devices.

A Skin-Inspired Design Integrating Mechano-Chemical-Thermal Robustness into Superhydrophobic Coatings

Designing scalable coatings with a wide spectrum of functions such as liquid repellency, anticorrosion, and antiflaming and a high level of mechano-chemical-thermal robustness is crucial in real-life applications. However, these individual functionalities and robustness are coupled together or even have conflicting requirements on the interfacial or bulky properties of materials, and thus, simultaneously integrating all these individual features into one coating has proved challenging. Herein, an integral skin-inspired triple-layered coating (STC) that resolves conflicting demands imposed by individual features on the structural, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of materials is proposed. Specifically, the rational design of multiple gradients in roughness, wetting, strength, and flame retardancy and the formation of continuous interfaces along its triple layers endow a sustained liquid repellency, anticorrosion, and flame retardancy even under harsh environments, as well as strong antiabrasion on surfaces and adhesion with the substrate. Such an all-in-one design enhances the durability and lifetime of coatings and reduces the maintenance and repair, thereby contributing to cost and energy saving. Together with a facile spraying fabrication process, this STC provides a feasible and sustainable strategy for constructing energy and resource-saving materials.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

A cellulose nanofibril-reinforced hydrogel with robust mechanical, self-healing, pH-responsive and antibacterial characteristics for wound dressing applications

Background

Bacterial infection in wounds has become a major threat to human life and health. With the growth use of synthetic antibiotics and the elevated evolution of drug resistant bacteria in human body cells requires the development of novel wound curing strategies. Herein, a novel pH-responsive hydrogel (RPC/PB) was fabricated using poly(vinyl alcohol)-borax (PB) and natural antibiotic resveratrol grafted cellulose nanofibrils (RPC) for bacterial-infected wound management.

Results

In this hydrogel matrix, RPC conjugate was interpenetrated in the PB network to form a semi-interpenetrating network that exhibited robust mechanical properties (fracture strength of 149.6 kPa), high self-healing efficiency (> 90%), and excellent adhesion performance (tissue shear stress of 54.2 kPa). Interestingly, the induced RPC/PB hydrogel showed pH-responsive drug release behavior, the cumulative release amount of resveratrol in pH 5.4 was 2.33 times than that of pH 7.4, which was adapted well to the acidic wound microenvironment. Additionally, this RPC/PB hydrogel exhibited excellent biocompatibility and antioxidant effect. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo results revealed that such RPC/PB hydrogel had excellent antibacterial, skin tissue regeneration and wound closure capabilities.

Conclusion

Therefore, the generated RPC/PB hydrogel could be an excellent wound dressing for bacteria-infected wound healing.

Sleep Disturbances During the Menopausal Transition: The Role of Sleep Reactivity and Arousal Predisposition

BACKGROUND

Sleep disturbances are common during the menopausal transition and several factors can contribute to this increased incidence. This study examined the association between sleep reactivity, arousal predisposition, sleep disturbances, and menopause.

METHODS

Data for this study were derived from a longitudinal, population-based study on the natural history of insomnia. A total of 873 women (40-60 years) were divided into two groups according to their menopausal status at baseline: reproductive (n = 408) and postmenopausal (n = 465). Participants were evaluated annually throughout the five-year follow-up period. Four questionnaires were used to examine sleep quality, insomnia severity, sleep reactivity, and arousal predisposition. The data were analyzed using two approaches: cross-sectional with a multivariate analysis and binary regression, and longitudinal with a linear mixed models using menopausal groups (3) x time (5) design.

RESULTS

Cross-sectional analyses showed that postmenopausal women reported significantly more severe insomnia and poorer sleep quality than reproductive women. Sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition were significant predictors of sleep disturbances. Longitudinal analyses revealed increased sleep disturbances in the two years before and after the menopausal transition. Sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition did not moderate the temporal relationship between menopausal transition and sleep disturbances.

CONCLUSION

More sleep disturbances were reported during the menopausal transition, but those difficulties were not explained by sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition. These results suggest the involvement of other psychophysiological factors in the development of sleep disturbances during the menopause.

2D Zinc-Based Metal–Organic Complexes Derived N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets as Durable Air Cathode for Rechargeable Zn–Air Batteries

The defect and N-doping engineering are critical to developing the highly efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), mainly because they can efficiently regulate the geometric/electronic structures and sur-/interface properties of the carbon matrix. Herein, we provide a facile and scalable strategy for the large-scale synthesis of N-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) with hierarchical pore structure, only involving solvothermal and pyrolysis processes. Additionally, the turnover frequency of ORR (TOF_ORR) was calculated by taking into account the electron-transfer number (n). Benefiting from the trimodal pore structures, high specific surface area, a higher pore volume, high-ratio mesopores, massive vacancies/long-range structural defects, and high-content pyridinic-N (~2.1%), the NPCNs-1000 shows an excellent ORR activity (1600 rpm, j_s = ~5.99 mA cm⁻²), a selectivity to four-electron ORR (~100%) and a superior stability in both the three-electrode tests (CP test for 7500 s at 0.8 V, Δj_s = ~0.58 mA cm⁻²) and Zn–Air battery (a negligible loss of 0.08 V within 265 h). Besides, the experimental results indicate that the enhancement of ORR activity mainly originates from the defects and pyridinic-N. More significantly, this work is expected to realize green and efficient energy storage and conversion along with the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

AB0784 Symptoms compatible with Rome IV functional bowel disorder in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Background

Clinical manifestations of gut problems except for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have not been well-established in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). One study investigated that 30% patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms meeting Rome III criteria.[1]

Objectives

To determine the frequency of symptoms meeting Rome IV functional bowel disorder (FBD) in patients with AS, investigate factors associated with FBD symptoms, and assess whether having FBD symptoms might influence AS disease activity.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, we consecutively enrolled 153 AS patients without known colonic ulcer and 56 sex- and age-matched controls to evaluate FBD (or its subtypes) symptoms.[2] In AS group, logistic regression models were used to explore whether demographic data, disease activity, level of gut inflammation, drug use, and fibromyalgia [3] were associated with presence of gut symptoms. Finally, potential impacts of gut symptoms on AS disease status were assessed in linear regression models.

Results

Sixty (39.2%) of 153 AS patients had FBD symptoms, which was more prevalent than controls (23.2%). Besides, symptoms compatible with IBS and chronic diarrhea were detected in 18 and 43 AS patients respectively. For AS group, multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that symptoms of FBD, IBS, and chronic diarrhea were negatively associated with using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and positively associated with comorbid fibromyalgia, respectively. In exploration about effects of FBD (or its subtypes) symptoms on AS disease activity by multivariable linear regression analyses, FBD symptoms and chronic diarrhea had positive associations with assessments of AS respectively.

Conclusion

Patients with AS had frequent symptoms compatible with FBD, IBS, and chronic diarrhea, proportions of which were lower in those with NSAID-use. The improvement of FBD symptoms, especially chronic diarrhea, might be conducive to disease status of AS patients.

High-performance cellulose acetate-based gas barrier films via tailoring reduced graphene oxide nanosheets

Improving the gas molecule barrier performance and structural stability of bio-plastic films dramatically contribute to packaging and protective fields. Herein, we proposed a novel nanocomposite film consisting of cellulose acetate (CA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-NiCoFeO_x) with high gas barrier property by applying "molecular glue" and "nano-patching" strategies. Systematical investigations demonstrated that the CA/rGO interfacial interaction was effectively enhanced due to the "molecular glue" role of PEI chains via physical/chemical bonds and the defective regions in rGO plane were nano-patched through hydrophilic interactions between edged oxygen-containing functional groups and ultrafine NiCoFeO_x nanoparticles (~3 nm). As a result, the oxygen and moisture transmission rates of the prepared CA/PEI/rGO-NPs hybrid film were significantly reduced to 0.31 cm³ ∗ μm/(m² ∗ d ∗ kPa) and 314.23 g/m² ∗ 24 h, respectively, which were 99.60% and 54.69% lower than pristine CA films. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of hybrid film was increased from 25.90 MPa to 40.67 MPa. More importantly, the designed nanocomposite film possesses excellent structural stability without obvious GO layer shedding and hydrophobicity attenuation after persistent bending at least 100 times. The exceptional robust and high gas barrier film displays great promising application in food, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and electronic instruments packaging industry.
