Longitudinal changes in bifidobacterial population during the first two years of life

Early life microbiota encompasses of a large percentage of Bifidobacterium, while it is not sufficiently understood how the Bifidobacterium population develops after infant's birth. Current study investigated the longitudinal changes in Bifidobacterium population during the first two years of life in 196 term born infants (1,654 samples) using 16S rRNA-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analysis. Throughout the first two years of life, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum and Bifidobacterium adolescentis were most dominant and prevalent in the Bifidobacterium population, while B. breve had the highest relative abundance and prevalence during the first week of life and it was taken over by B. longum subsp. longum around two years after birth. Sampling time points, early antibiotic(s) exposure (effect only measurable within a month after birth), delivery mode (effect still detectable two-months after birth) and feeding mode (effect lasted until six months after birth), significantly contributed to the overall variation in the bifidobacterial population. From six months onwards, introducing of solid food and cessation of breastfeeding were accompanied with drastic changes in the composition in bifidobacterial population. Altogether, current study confirmed the effect of potential contributors to the longitudinal changes within the bifidobacterial population during the first two years of life. [Pulmonary co-infection with Nocardia otitidiscaviarum and Aspergillus: a case report]

Nocardia is a rarely encountered opportunistic gram-positive bacterium that exhibits marked invasiveness and dissemination. Typically, acquired through trauma or inhalation, this pathogen primarily affects immunocompromised individuals and is a potentially life-threatening risk in severe cases. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum is a particularly rare subtype of Nocardia infection, and the occurrence of concurrent Aspergillus infection is extremely rare. In cases where both infections manifest concomitantly, rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential to facilitate the subsequent selection of appropriate anti-infective interventions. This paper reported the diagnostic and therapeutic experience in managing a case of pulmonary co-infection with Nocardia otitidiscaviarum and Aspergillus. The patient presented with an acute onset, rapid progression, and early manifestation of respiratory failure. The diagnostic process included respiratory pathogen culture and bronchoscopy, which was supplemented with targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS). These comprehensive diagnostic modalities led to the identification of pulmonary co-infection with Nocardia otitidiscaviarum and Aspergillus. After adjustment of the antibiotic regimen, the patient's condition improved rapidly, culminating in a timely discharge.

[Clinicopathological analysis of benign mammary ductal cystic papillomatosis with loss of myoepithelial cells]

Objective: To investigate the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of benign apocrine cystic papillary hyperplasia of the breast with loss of myoepithelial cell layer. Methods: The clinical data, histopathological features and immunohistochemical profile of patients with benign apocrine cystic papillary hyperplasia of breast with loss of myoepithelial cell layer from January 2016 to December 2021 were examined, in which six patients were identified. Results: All six patients were female, aged 36-61 years (median 46 years), who presented with a breast mass; three cases were from the left breast and three cases were from the right breast. Microscopic examination of all cases showed breast hyperplasia with apocrine cysts, accompanied by different degrees of micropapillary and papillary hyperplasia of apocrine cells. One case was associated with lobular carcinoma in situ, and one case was associated with apocrine ductal carcinoma in situ with intraductal dissemination in adenosis. Immunohistochemical staining of CK5/6, p63, SMA, SMMHC, Calponin and CD10 showed complete absence of myoepithelial cell layer surrounding ducts in apocrine cystic papillary hyperplasia. Conclusions: The myoepithelial cells of apocrine cystic papillary hyperplasia of the breast may undergo abnormal changes and may even be completely lost. The diagnosis should be comprehensively considered along with cytomorphological and histological features to avoid overdiagnosis.

Trackability of proteins from probiotic Bifidobacterium spp. in the gut using metaproteomics

Beneficial effects of Bifidobacterium spp. on gut microbiota development and infant health have been reported earlier. Therefore, supplementation of infant formulas with probiotic bifidobacteria, as well as prebiotics stimulating bifidobacterial growth, has been proposed. Here, we studied the faecal microbiome of infants supplemented with specialized nutrition, of which some received a standard amino acid-based formula (AAF) and others an AAF with a specific mixture of prebiotics and a probiotic (synbiotics) using metaproteomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Faecal samples were taken at baseline, as well as after 6 and 12 months fed with the specialized formula. The aim was to compare microbial differences between infants treated with the standard AAF and those who received the additional synbiotics. Our findings show that infants who received AAF with synbiotics have significantly higher levels of Bifidobacteriaceae DNA as well as significantly increased levels of Coriobacteriaceae proteins, over time. Moreover, at visit 12 months higher levels of some bifidobacterial carbohydrate-active enzymes, known to metabolize oligosaccharides, were observed in the synbiotic group compared to the non-synbiotic group. The results indicate that the synbiotics provided in our study are trackable in faecal samples on the DNA and protein level during the intervention period.

Novel requirements for HAP2-mediated gamete fusion in Tetrahymena

The ancestral gamete fusion protein, HAP2, catalyzes sperm-egg fusion in a broad range of taxa dating to the last eukaryotic common ancestor. Remarkably, HAP2 orthologs are structurally related to the class II fusogens of modern-day viruses, and recent studies make clear that these proteins utilize similar mechanisms to achieve membrane merger. To identify factors that may regulate HAP2 activity, we screened mutants of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila for behaviors that mimic Δhap2 knockout phenotypes in this species. Using this approach, we identified two new genes, GFU1 and GFU2, whose products are necessary for the formation of membrane pores during fertilization and show that the product of a third gene, namely ZFR1, may be involved in pore maintenance and/or expansion. Finally, we propose a model that explains cooperativity between the fusion machinery on apposed membranes of mating cells and accounts for successful fertilization in T. thermophila's multiple mating type system.

Impact of economic growth on physical activity and sedentary behaviors: a Systematic Review

OBJECTIVES

This study systematically reviewed scientific evidence regarding the impact of economic growth on physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviors.

METHODS

A keyword and reference search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EBSCO from the inception of an electronic bibliographic database to November 2021. Studies that met all of the following criteria were included in the review: (1) study designs: observational studies; (2) study subjects: people of all ages; (3) exposure: macroeconomic growth; (4) outcomes: PA or sedentary behaviors/sitting time.

RESULTS

15 studies were identified. Eight among 12 studies found economic growth positively associated with at least one domain/measure of PA, whereas the remaining four found an inverse relationship. One of two studies examined the association of economic growth and physical inactivity found a positive relationship, while another found no significant relationship. Four studies examined the associations between economic growth and sedentary behaviors, and the results were inconclusive. The impact of economic growth on PA is through three main pathways-(a) building and maintaining parks and green spaces, (b) adoption of the modern workplace and high technology, and (c) motorized transportation.

CONCLUSION

Building and maintaining parks and green spaces can effectively promote leisure time physical activity and active commute in developed countries, whereas promoting workplace and transportation-related PA could be prioritized in developing nations. Future research calls for longitudinal study design and further exploration of macro-environmental factors. Policymakers and stakeholders should be informed about the potential PA reduction resulting from economic growth and develop preventive strategies to alleviate the problem.

Clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis: a literature review

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP).

METHODS

We conducted a computer literature search in five databases and comprehensively extracted all kinds of information from each article. Traditional Chinese medicine inheritance support system (TCMISS) V2.5 was adopted to perform association analysis. The effectiveness, safety and methodological quality were analyzed using randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs).

RESULTS

A total of 2880 related articles were collected. Finally, 423 articles which included 312 RCTs were included for in-depth analysis. We collected 369 Chinese medicine prescriptions and found that the top three frequently used herbs in the treatment of PMOP were Epimedii Folium (Yinyanghuo), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui). The top Chinese patent medicine was Gushukang capsule. No serious adverse reaction (AR) had been reported in the Chinese medical treatment group.

CONCLUSION

The effectiveness of TCM in treating PMOP needs to be further explored, and the safety is good. Therefore, high-quality evidence is urgently needed to supplement.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section σ(E_{ν}) for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer (ν). Data corresponding to 5.3×10^{19} protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy E_{ν} and reconstructed neutrino energy E_{ν}^{rec} and between the energy transfer ν and reconstructed hadronic energy E_{had}^{rec} are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the E_{had}^{rec} distributions between data and a MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy, and polar angle to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section σ(E_{ν}) and the differential cross section dσ/dν on argon.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral-Current Δ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩  GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80×10^{20} protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π^{0} events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with Eight Years of IceCube Data

We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

A prospective study on vulvovaginal candidiasis: multicentre molecular epidemiology of pathogenic yeasts in China

BACKGROUND

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is frequent in women of reproductive age, but very limited data are available on the epidemiology in cases of VVC in China.

OBJECTIVES

The current study has been conducted to reveal the prevalence, species distribution of yeast causing VVC and molecular genetics of Candida albicans in China.

METHODS

Vaginal swabs were collected from 543 VVC outpatients recruited in 12 hospitals in China between September 2017 and March 2018. They were preliminarily incubated on Sabouraud dextrose agar and then positive subjects of which were then transmitted to our institute for further identification. CHROMagar™ was used to isolate Candida species, and all isolates were finally identified by DNA sequencing. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to analyse phylogenetic relationships of the various C. albicans isolates.

RESULTS

Eleven different yeast species were identified in 543 isolates, among which C. albicans (84.7%) was the most frequent, followed by C. glabrata (8.7%). We obtained 117 unique diploid sequence types from 451 clinical C. albicans isolates and 92 isolates (20.4%) belonged to a New Clade. All the strains appearing in the New Clade were from northern China and they were isolated from non-recurrent VVC.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that C. albicans are still the main cause of VVC in China and the majority of C. albicans isolates belongs to Clade 1 with DST 79 and DST 45 being two most common. Moreover, the New Clade revealed in our study seems to be specific to northern China.

A systematic review of risk factors for postinduction hypotension in surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia

OBJECTIVE

Clinical evidence has proved that postinduction hypotension (PIH) is very prevalent in surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia, and commonly develops within 20 min after the induction of general anesthesia. However, the risk factors for PIH are not clear till now, therefore, a systematic review of current evidence was conducted.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, and Web of Science were searched for articles published in English up to June 2021. The following search items were used: postinduction, postintubation, propofol induction, anesthesia induction, general anesthesia induction, hypotension, risk factor, general anesthesia, surgery. The articles were screened using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the data from included studies were extracted and analyzed.

RESULTS

Twelve studies were included. Seven studies reported the association between age and PIH, and six showed age was a risk factor. Five or three studies reported the association between mean arterial pressure (MAP) and PIH or between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and PIH, but the results were conflicting. Results from two studies regarding gender and PIH were conflicting. Two studies reported that weight was negatively correlated with PIH. Low baseline blood volume, emergency operation, long-term intake of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) were risk factors for PIH. One study showed that ASA III-V, propofol induction, and increasing fentanyl dosage were risk factors for PIH.

CONCLUSIONS

Aging, ASA III-V, emergency operation, low baseline blood volume, long-term intake of ACEI/ARB, propofol induction, and increasing fentanyl dosage are potential risk factors for PIH, while body weight gain is a protective factor. Based on the current evidence, it is difficult to determine whether baseline blood pressure or gender is associated with the development of PIH.

Predicting haemodynamic significance of coronary stenosis with radiomics-based pericoronary adipose tissue characteristics

AIM

To investigate the diagnostic performance of the radiomics features of pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) in determining haemodynamically significant coronary artery stenosis as evaluated by fractional flow reserve (FFR).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 92 patients with clinically suspected coronary artery disease who underwent coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography (CCTA), invasive coronary angiography (ICA), and FFR examination within 1 month were included retrospectively, and 121 lesions were randomly assigned to the training and testing set. Based on manual segmentation of PCAT, 1,116 radiomics features were computed. After radiomics robustness assessment and feature selection, radiomics models were established using the different machine-learning algorithms. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and net reclassification index (NRI) were analysed to compare the discrimination and reclassification abilities of radiomics models.

RESULTS

Two radiomics features were selected after exclusions, and both were significantly higher in coronary arteries with FFR ≤0.8 than those with FFR >0.8. ROC analysis showed that the combination of CCTA and decision tree radiomics model achieved significantly higher diagnostic performance (AUC: 0.812) than CCTA alone (AUC: 0.599, p=0.015). Furthermore, the NRI of the combined model was 0.820 and 0.775 in the training and testing sets, respectively, suggesting the radiomics features of PCAT had were effective in classifying the haemodynamic significance of coronary stenosis.

CONCLUSIONS

Adding PCAT radiomics features to CCTA enabled identification of haemodynamically significant coronary artery stenosis.

Search for a Higgs Portal Scalar Decaying to Electron-Positron Pairs in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for the decays of a neutral scalar boson produced by kaons decaying at rest, in the context of the Higgs portal model, using the MicroBooNE detector. We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93×10^{20} protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9±0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of θ<(3.3-4.6)×10^{-4} at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200)  MeV/c^{2}. We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K_{L}^{0}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. We also provide a model-independent limit on a new boson X produced in K→πX decays and decaying to e^{+}e^{-}.

[Clinical features of primary isolated chylopericardium: a retrospective review study]

Objective: To examine the clinical characteristics and abnormal reflux branches of primary isolated chylopericardium. Methods: Totally 43 patients with primary isolated chylopericardium at Department of Lymphatic Surgery, Affiliated Beijing Shijitan Hospital,Capital Medical University from June 2007 to January 2018 were recruited in this study. There were 21 males and 22 females, aging (23.0±15.9) years (range: 2 to 57 years). The levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, total protein and albumin in pericardial effusion and blood were compared by paired-t test, and the characteristics of lymphatic system in direct lymphangiography and postoperative CT were analyzed. Results: Pericardial effusion was mainly milky white and monocytes, and 95.3%(41/43) were positive for Rivalta test. The level of triglyceride in pericardial effusion was significantly higher than that of blood ((9.67±5.11) mmol/L vs. (1.28±0.89) mmol/L, t=10.557, P<0.01), and the levels of total cholesterol ((2.19±0.52) mmol/L vs. (4.12±1.06) mmol/L, t=-3.732, P<0.01), total protein ((61.25±16.17) g/L vs. (68.26±8.30) g/L, t=-2.958, P=0.005) and albumin ((36.63±7.06) g/L vs. (42.32±4.73) g/L, t=-5.747, P<0.01) were significantly lower than that of blood. In the direct lymphangiography, the imaging of iliac and retroperitoneal lymphatics showed dilated or tortuous in 90.7% (39/43), the thoracoabdominal segment of thoracic duct showed dilation in 46.5% (20/43), and cervical thoracic duct imaging showed dilation in 44.2% (19/43) and stenosis in 55.8% (24/43). The image of lipiodol flowing into the vein showed obstruction at the venous angle. There were 60.5%(26/43) of the patients with lipiodol reflux through the bronchomediastinal trunk (type Ⅰ), 11.6%(5/43) with lipiodol diffusion to the pericardium through the abnormal pathway from the thoracic segment of the thoracic duct (type Ⅱ), while no communication pathway between the thoracic duct and the pericardial cavity (type Ⅲ) found in 27.9%(12/43). CT images obtained after the direct lymphangiography showed 34.9%(15/43) had abnormal distribution of lipiodol in pericardium, mediastinal lymph nodes and lung hilar lymph nodes, 46.5%(20/43) in mediastinal lymph nodes and lung hilar lymph nodes, 14.0%(6/43) only mediastinal lymph nodes, 4.6%(2/43) had no lipiodol in the above areas. Conclusions: Pericardial effusion compared with same period blood, has higher triglyceride, lower total cholesterol, total protein and albumin. The obstruction of the cervical segment of the thoracic duct and the formation of abnormal reflux branches would be corelative to primary isolated chylopericardium.

[Analysis of gut microbiome in patients with lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma]

To investigate the diversity and composition of gut microbiota in patients with lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma. A single-center and case-control study was conducted to consecutively enroll a total of 27 lung cancer patients, including 15 males and 12 females, who were seen at the Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine between September 2018 to October 2020. A total of 20 cases of healthy healthy physical examiners, including 9 males and 11 females were recruited as healthy control group (HC) during the same period. Clinical data and stool samples were collected from each participants, and lung cancer patients were divided into lung adenocarcinoma group (AC, 19 patients, 8 males and 11 females) and lung squamous cell carcinoma group (SCC, 8 patients, 7 males and 1 females) according to the pathology type. Genomic DNA were extracted to amplify 16S rDNA V3-V4 region, then the Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing platform and QIIME software were used for sequencing and analyzing the structure of the gut microbiota, respectively. Analysis of variance, χ² test, K-W test were used to analyze the differences in age, gender,α diversity, and relative abundance of microbiota among the three groups. AC, SCC, and HC were aged (58.74±9.27), (63.38±6.12), and (55.65±7.79) years old, respectively. There were no difference in gender and age among the three groups (gender and age are respectively:χ²=5.155, P=0.076;F=2.598,P=0.086). And no significant difference in alpha diversity were found among the three groups (Chao and Shannon index were respectively: F=0.616, P=0.545; F=2.484, P=0.095), while β-diversity analysis indicated significant differences in the structure of intestinal flora among AC, SCC and HC (P=0.001). LEfSe analysis showed that AC and SCC both have dominant bacterials. Megasphaera (H=7.855,P=0.020) and Erysipelatoclostridium (H=7.426,P=0.024) were enriched in patients with AC, while Enterococcus (H=8.400, P=0.015), Veillonella (H=9.957,P=0.007), and Eubacterium_eligens_group (H=10.514,P=0.005) were enriched in patients with SCC. Lung cancer patients have gut microbiota imbalance, while lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma patients have no significant difference in gut microbiota diversity, but lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma have their own unique microbiota. This imbalance of the intestinal microenvironment is of great significance for studying the occurrence and development of different pathological types of lung cancer.

Effect of front-of-package nutrition labeling on food purchases: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES

This study systematically reviewed evidence from interventions on the effect of front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling on food purchases.

STUDY DESIGN

The study design used in this study is a systematic review.

METHODS

Keyword search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library.

RESULTS

Fifteen studies (10 randomized controlled trials, four pre-post studies, and one case-control study) met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Five studies were conducted in a controlled setting through the establishment of an online virtual supermarket or physical laboratory food store solely for the intervention. In contrast, the remaining ten studies were conducted in a naturalistic setting where people commonly purchase foods (e.g., supermarket, grocery store, school/hospital cafeteria, or vending machine). FOP labels assessed included traffic lights, health star rating, daily intake guides, health warnings, and high sugar symbol labels. Compared with the control, FOP labels were effective for helping participants make healthier food purchase decisions in five of the 12 studies that assessed traffic lights labels, in one of the two studies that assessed health warning labels, and in one study that assessed high sugar symbol labels. Three assessed health star ratings and one assessed daily intake guide labels, but none revealed an effect on food purchases compared with the control.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings on the effectiveness of FOP nutrition labels in 'nudging' consumers toward healthier food purchases remain mixed and inconclusive. Future studies should examine other types of FOP labels beside the traffic lights labels and explore the different effects by consumer affordability, population subgroup, and shopping environment.

First Measurement of Differential Charged Current Quasielasticlike ν_{μ}-Argon Scattering Cross Sections with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report on the first measurement of flux-integrated single differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino (ν_{μ}) scattering on argon with a muon and a proton in the final state, ^{40}Ar (ν_{μ},μp)X. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector with an exposure of 4.59×10^{19} protons on target. Events are selected to enhance the contribution of CC quasielastic (CCQE) interactions. The data are reported in terms of a total cross section as well as single differential cross sections in final state muon and proton kinematics. We measure the integrated per-nucleus CCQE-like cross section (i.e., for interactions leading to a muon, one proton, and no pions above detection threshold) of (4.93±0.76_{stat}±1.29_{sys})×10^{-38}  cm^{2}, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The single differential cross sections are also in overall good agreement with theoretical predictions, except at very forward muon scattering angles that correspond to low-momentum-transfer events.

Significant, long-lasting pain relief in primary dysmenorrhea with low-dose naproxen sodium compared with acetaminophen: a double-blind, randomized, single-dose, crossover study

Objectives: Many women experience menstrual cramps, which adversely affects quality-of-life. Both naproxen and acetaminophen are indicated to relieve menstrual pain. This study assessed the analgesic efficacy of a single, maximum non-prescription dose of naproxen sodium compared with that of acetaminophen in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.Methods: Healthy females with primary dysmenorrhea were included in our double-blind, randomized, crossover study (trial registration no. NCT03448536). When pain was moderate (≥5 on 0-10 numerical rating scale), subjects took a single dose of naproxen sodium (440 mg) and crossed over to acetaminophen (1000 mg) in the next cycle, or vice versa. Total pain relief over 12 h (TOTPAR0-12) was the primary outcome, while secondary outcomes included summed pain intensity differences (SPID) and TOTPAR scores throughout 12 h, and subject overall evaluation of treatment.Results: The per protocol population (n = 189) used naproxen sodium (n = 170) and acetaminophen (n = 160). TOTPAR0-12 was significantly greater with naproxen sodium than acetaminophen (least-squares (LS) mean difference = 4.31; p < .001), and pain intensity was significantly lower (SPID0-12 LS mean difference = 9.80; p < .001). Some measures of pain intensity favoring naproxen sodium became significant at earlier time points (e.g. SPID4-6 LS mean difference = 1.49; p = .02). After 6 h post-dose, naproxen sodium was significantly more effective than acetaminophen, maintained for 12 h (SPID6-12 LS mean difference = 8.27; TOTPAR6-12 LS mean difference = 3.75; both p < .001). Significantly more subjects rated naproxen sodium as good-to-excellent (70.6%) vs acetaminophen (63.1%) (p = .002).Conclusions: A single, maximum non-prescription dose of naproxen sodium was more effective than acetaminophen over 12 h.

Effects of dietary calcium pyruvate on gastrointestinal tract development, intestinal health and growth performance of newly weaned piglets fed low-protein diets

AIM

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary calcium pyruvate supplementation on growth performance and intestinal health of weaned piglets fed low-protein diets.

METHODS AND RESULTS

After a 7-day adaptation period, 60 individually housed piglets (Duroc × Yorkshire-Landrace) weaned at 28 days of age were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments (20 pigs/treatment) for 28 days: control diet (20·0% crude protein [CP]), low-protein diet (15·5% CP), and experimental (15·5% CP + 1·8% calcium pyruvate). At the end of the experiment, six piglets from each diet group were slaughtered and blood and tissue samples were collected. Compared with the control group, feeding piglets with 15·5% CP decreased the daily body weight gain; lengths of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum; and weights of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum and ileum (P < 0·05), while 15·5% CP + 1·8% calcium pyruvate supplementation removed those differences (P > 0·05). Compared with the control group, the diarrhoea incidence and relative richness of Firmicutes in the colon contents of piglets in both the 15·5% CP and 15·5% CP + 1·8% calcium pyruvate groups was decreased. The relative richness of Bacteriodetes in the colon contents of piglets was higher in the 15·5% CP + 1·8% calcium pyruvate group than in the control and 15·5% CP groups (P < 0·05).

CONCLUSION

Calcium pyruvate supplementation for four weeks removed the negative effects of a low-protein diet on the gastrointestinal tract development and daily body weight gain of weaned piglets.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This study showed that supplementing a low-protein diet with calcium pyruvate, an effective alternative metabolic fuel to amino acids, was beneficial in improving the intestinal health and maximizing the growth of newly weaned piglets.

First Measurement of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections on Argon at E_{ν}∼0.8 GeV with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of the double-differential and total muon neutrino charged current inclusive cross sections on argon at a mean neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster neutrino beam and correspond to 1.6×10^{20} protons on target of exposure. The measured differential cross sections are presented as a function of muon momentum, using multiple Coulomb scattering as a momentum measurement technique, and the muon angle with respect to the beam direction. We compare the measured cross sections to multiple neutrino event generators and find better agreement with those containing more complete treatment of quasielastic scattering processes at low Q^{2}. The total flux integrated cross section is measured to be 0.693±0.010(stat)±0.165(syst)×10^{-38}  cm^{2}.

[The effect of perioperative fluid therapy on early postoperative pulmonary complications after orthotopic liver transplantation]

Objective: To investigate the effect of perioperative fluid therapy on early postoperative pulmonary complication (PPC) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Methods: The clinical data of 132 patients who underwent OLT in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from April 2016 to December 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. These patients included 96 males and 36 females, aged (47.3±9.6) years (range: 24-69 years). Based on the clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging findings of patients in ICU and PPC occurrence within 7 days after OLT surgery, the patients were divided into 2 groups: non-PPC group and PPC group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between perioperative variables and PPC. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate cumulative survival of recipients with or without PPC within 2-years. Results: During the follow-up, 11 patients (8.3%) died and 72 patients (54.5%) developed PPC after operation. There were 34 cases, 6 cases, 3 cases, 4 cases, 15 cases, 6 cases and 4 cases of only pleural effusion, only pulmonary edema, only pneumonia, pleural effusion with pneumonia, pleural effusion with pulmonary edema, pleural effusion with atelectasis, and pleural effusion with pneumonia and pneumonia in PPC, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that the preoperative factors (model for end-stage liver disease score), the intra-operative factors (duration of surgery, total infusion volume, total blood products) and the postoperative cumulative fluid balance within the first 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h were the prognosis factors of PPC (P<0.05). At least two out of the first three postoperative days with a fluid balance of ≤-500 ml was a protective factor. Using multivariate analysis by Logistic regression, only the red blood units >10 U (OR=3.55, 95% CI: 1.35-9.26, P=0.010) and the cumulative fluid intake >12 L (OR=2.98, 95% CI: 1.14-7.80, P=0.026) within the first 72 h after operation were independent prognosis factors of PPC after OLT. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the cumulative survival rate was lower in PPC group than that in non-PPC group (χ(2)=6.590, P=0.01). Conclusion: Massive red blood cell transfusion and the cumulative fluid volume >12 L during perioperative 72 hours are independent prognosis factors of PPC after OLT.

Night-time eating and body weight status among US adults, 2007-2016

BACKGROUND

The present study assessed the relationship between night-time eating and body weight status among US adults, using in-person 24-h dietary recall data from a nationally representative survey.

METHODS

Individual-level data (n = 23 003) came from the 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (five waves). Multivariate linear and logistic regressions were performed to estimate the effect of energy, sugar, fat and saturated fat intake during night-time on body mass index (BMI), obesity (BMI ≥30 kg m^-2 ), waist circumference (WC) and abdominal obesity (WC ≥88 cm in women; WC ≥102 cm in men), adjusting for daily total energy intake, physical activity, sleeping and other individual characteristics.

RESULTS

Approximately 36.5% and 56.7% of the NHANES adult participants had obesity and abdominal obesity, respectively. The proportion of energy, total fat, saturated fat and total sugar intake within the time window of 00.00 h to 05.59 h and 22.00 h to 23.59 h averaged 5.7%, 5.3%, 5.7% and 6.8%, respectively. Energy intake within the time window was not found to be associated with BMI, WC, obesity or abdominal obesity in the regression analyses. Sensitivity analyses applying alternative time windows to capture night-time eating found night-time intakes of energy, total fat, saturated fat and total sugar not to be associated BMI, WC, obesity or abdominal obesity.

CONCLUSIONS

Night-time eating was not found to be associated with body weight status in a US nationally representative adult sample. Restricting night-time food consumption alone without an overall reduction in daily caloric intake may not prevent obesity. The findings of the present study warrant replication in a future experimental study with habitual dietary behaviour measures.

[Evaluation and comparison of prognostic value of serum free light chain ratio/difference in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma]

目的

比较评估初诊时血清游离轻链比值（rFLC）及差值（dFLC）对多发性骨髓瘤（MM）患者预后的价值。

方法

收集整理2012年1月至2016年3月有FLC检测记录的479例初治MM患者的相关临床资料，采用四分位间距法将rFLC、dFLC进行分组。将rFLC分别为3组：≤14.828、14.828~364.597、≥364.597。将dFLC分为3组：≤112.85 mg/L、112.85~2 891.83 mg/L、≥2 891.83 mg/L。随后分别对不同分组进行预后分析比较。使用Kaplan-Meier进行无进展生存（PFS）和总生存期（OS）比较，使用Cox回归进行单因素、多因素预后相关性分析。

结果

不同截断范围rFLC或dFLC患者的OS及PFS差异均有统计学意义。rFLC≤14.828组OS明显优于其他两组（未达到对61个月对47个月，P=0.019）；PFS与rFLC 14.828~364.597组相比，差异无统计学意义（P=0.227），与rFLC≥364.597相比，差异有统计学意义（P=0.024）。dFLC≤112.85 mg/L组与其他两组相比PFS、OS差异均有统计学意义。单因素、多因素分析显示rFLC仅与患者OS显著相关，而dFLC与患者OS、PFS均显著相关。4年OS率比较，rFLC≤14.828组4年OS率达90.84%，明显高于其他两组（59.29%、62.26%）；dFLC≤112.85 mg/L组4年OS率达89.97%，明显高于其他两组（41.32%、71.95%）（P<0.05）。

结论

对于初治MM患者，不同截断范围的rFLC、dFLC对患者生存预后影响不同。其中rFLC≤14.828或dFLC≤112.85 mg/L，其生存预后差异更为明显，且具有更低的死亡风险，危险比也更低。以此截断值判断患者预后较为理想。

[Cytogenetic abnormalities and prognosis of 532 patients with multiple myeloma]

目的

探讨多发性骨髓瘤（MM）6种常见细胞遗传学异常对预后的影响。

方法

对532例初诊MM患者通过CD138免疫磁珠富集骨髓瘤细胞，采用间期荧光原位杂交（FISH）技术对13q−、17p−、1q+、t（4;14）、t（11;14）和t（14;16）等MM常见遗传学异常进行检测，比较不同遗传学异常对预后的影响。

结果

532例患者中，细胞遗传学异常检出率为78.20%（416/532），其中13q−的检出率为42.29%（225/532），17p−为16.35%（87/532），1q＋为53.38%（284/532），t（4;14）为25.94%（138/532），t（11;14）为21.62%（115/532），t（14;16）为2.07%（11/532）。将6种细胞遗传学异常进行相关性分析，得出13q−与17p−、1q+、t（4;14）、t（14;16）的发生均相关（P值均<0.05）。单因素分析结果显示，13q−、1q+、t（4;14）和t（14;16）对患者无进展生存（PFS）有明显影响，13q−、17p−、t（4;14）和t（14;16）对患者总生存（OS）有明显影响。多因素分析结果显示，1q+、t（4;14）和t（14;16）是影响患者PFS的独立预后不良因素，17p−、t（4;14）和t（14;16）是影响患者OS的独立预后不良因素。将患者根据所伴有的独立预后不良因素的数量进行分组，伴有0、1、2、3个独立预后不良因素的患者中位PFS时间分别为30.9、28.4、18.7、17.6个月（P＝0.035），中位OS分别为54.4、46.1、38.0、21.2个月（P＝0.004）。

结论

1q+、17p−、t（4;14）和t（14;16）是影响MM患者生存的独立预后不良因素；13q−的发生常伴随着17p−、1q＋和（或）t（4;14），单纯13q−不是独立预后因素；伴有的独立预后不良因素数量越多，患者预后越差。

Abstract P3-11-17: A novel biodynamic imaging assay predicts success or failure of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients

Background: Use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer patients has increased significantly over the past decade. The clinical benefits of NAC, including potential to downstage disease, facilitation of breast conserving surgery and use of pathologic response as a prognostic marker, are well established. However, with multiple regimens approved and recommended for NAC, choosing the optimal therapy for individual patients remains a challenge. Biodynamic imaging (BI), a novel technology that captures cellular motility in living tissue via Doppler spectroscopy, could be used ex-vivo to prospectively evaluate the efficacy of systemic therapies in patient tumor samples prior to treatment. This study aimed to determine whether BI could accurately predict likelihood of response to NAC in breast cancer patients.

Methods: Fresh core biopsies were obtained from 84 patients prospectively enrolled in an IRB-approved clinical trial at 5 institutions between 1/5/17 and 8/3/2018. Patient tumor tissue was collected at time of routine diagnostic biopsy and sent to a central laboratory where it was divided into intact tumor fragments measuring approximately 1mm in diameter. Fragments were placed into 96 well plates and imaged using the BI assay (Onco4D™), while being challenged by various cytotoxic agents for up to 20 hours. Cellular characteristics and motility signatures were evaluated and compared to pathologic NAC response established upon surgical resection (mastectomy or lumpectomy).

Results: At the time of this analysis, centrally-confirmed pathologic response data were available for 17 patients treated with doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide + taxane (AC). Pathologic outcomes are pending for an additional 8 AC patients. The remainder of the 84 patients initially enrolled in the study either did not receive NAC (n=10), have not yet selected a course of therapy (n=12), or received NAC regimens other than AC (n=37). Of the 17 currently evaluable AC-treated patients, 4 had triple negative (TN) disease, 12 were hormone receptor positive, and 1 hormone receptor negative patient showed equivocal HER2 results. Two of the TN patients were known to harbor pathogenic BRCA1 mutations and received carboplatin in addition to AC. Seven of 17 patients (40%) displayed resistance to AC (2 with progressive and 5 with stable disease) while 10 experienced objective response (8 partial and 2 complete response). A multilinear regression model using 10 BI markers accurately classified 16 of 17 patients (94%) while producing 1 false prediction of partial response for a patient with stable disease clinically (R-squared=0.9994, p&lt;.0001). The positive predictive and negative predictive values of BI to AC response were 100% and 91%, respectively.

Conclusion: BI was able to accurately predict patient response to neoadjuvant AC, demonstrating the potential for the platform to support personalized patient therapy. This clinical trial is ongoing and will report out results for TC (docetaxel/cyclophosphamide), TCHP (docetaxel/carboplatin/trastuzumab + pertuzumab), and additional AC patients as outcome data are accrued.

Applications of social network analysis to obesity: a systematic review

People's health behaviours and outcomes can be profoundly shaped by the social networks they are embedded in. Based on graph theory, social network analysis is a research framework for the study of social interactions and the structure of these interactions among social actors. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science for articles published until August 2017 that applied social network analysis to examine obesity and social networks. Eight studies (three cross-sectional and five longitudinal) conducted in the US (n = 6) and Australia (n = 2) were identified. Seven focused on adolescents' and one on adults' friendship networks. They examined structural features of these networks that were associated with obesity, including degree distribution, popularity, modularity maximization and K-clique percolation. All three cross-sectional studies that used exponential random graph models found individuals with similar body weight status and/or weight-related behaviour were more likely to share a network tie than individuals with dissimilar traits. Three longitudinal studies using stochastic actor-based models found friendship network characteristics influenced change in individuals' body weight status and/or weight-related behaviour over time. Future research should focus on diverse populations and types of social networks and identifying the mechanisms by which social networks influence obesity to inform network-based interventions.

Effectiveness of A Body Shape Index (ABSI) in predicting chronic diseases and mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Anthropometric measures are simple, inexpensive, noninvasive tools to assess the risk of morbidity and mortality. This systematic review assessed the performance of A Body Shape Index (ABSI) in predicting hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality and compared the differential predictability between ABSI and two other common anthropometric measures - body mass index and waist circumference. A keyword and reference search were conducted in the PubMed and Web of Science for articles published until 1 November 2017. Thirty-eight studies were included in the review, including 24 retrospective cohort studies and 14 cross-sectional studies conducted in 15 countries. Meta-analysis found that a standard deviation increase in ABSI was associated with an increase in the odds of hypertension by 13% and type 2 diabetes by 35% and an increase in cardiovascular disease risk by 21% and all-cause mortality risk by 55%. ABSI outperformed body mass index and waist circumference in predicting all-cause mortality but underperformed in predicting chronic diseases. ABSI is highly clustered around the mean with a rather small variance, making it difficult to define a clinical cutoff for clinical practice. Future studies are warranted to assess ABSI's potential usefulness as an anthropometric measure in population-level health surveillance.

Impact of ambient fine particulate matter air pollution on health behaviors: a longitudinal study of university students in Beijing, China

OBJECTIVES

Poor air quality has become a national public health concern in China. This study examines the impact of ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) air pollution on health behaviors among college students in Beijing, China.

STUDY DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

METHODS

Health surveys were repeatedly administered among 12,000 newly admitted students at Tsinghua University during 2012-2015 over their freshman year. Linear individual fixed-effect regressions were performed to estimate the impacts of ambient PM_2.5 concentration on health behaviors among survey participants, adjusting for various time-variant individual characteristics and environmental measures.

RESULTS

Ambient PM_2.5 concentration was found to be negatively associated with time spent on walking, vigorous physical activity and sedentary behavior in the last week, but positively associated with time spent on nighttime/daytime sleep among survey participants. An increase in the ambient PM_2.5 concentration by one standard deviation (36.5 μg/m³) was associated with a reduction in weekly total minutes of walking by 7.3 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 5.3-9.4), a reduction in weekly total minutes of vigorous physical activity by 10.1 (95% CI = 8.5-11.7), a reduction in daily average hours of sedentary behavior by 0.06 (95% CI = 0.02-0.10) but an increase in daily average hours of nighttime/daytime sleep by 1.07 (95% CI = 1.04-1.11).

CONCLUSIONS

Ambient PM_2.5 air pollution was inversely associated with physical activity level but positively associated with sleep duration among college students. Future studies are warranted to replicate study findings in other Chinese cities and universities, and policy interventions are urgently called to reduce air pollution level in China's urban areas.

Global warming and obesity: a systematic review

Global warming and the obesity epidemic are two unprecedented challenges mankind faces today. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO and Scopus for articles published until July 2017 that reported findings on the relationship between global warming and the obesity epidemic. Fifty studies were identified. Topic-wise, articles were classified into four relationships - global warming and the obesity epidemic are correlated because of common drivers (n = 21); global warming influences the obesity epidemic (n = 13); the obesity epidemic influences global warming (n = 13); and global warming and the obesity epidemic influence each other (n = 3). We constructed a conceptual model linking global warming and the obesity epidemic - the fossil fuel economy, population growth and industrialization impact land use and urbanization, motorized transportation and agricultural productivity and consequently influences global warming by excess greenhouse gas emission and the obesity epidemic by nutrition transition and physical inactivity; global warming also directly impacts obesity by food supply/price shock and adaptive thermogenesis, and the obesity epidemic impacts global warming by the elevated energy consumption. Policies that endorse deployment of clean and sustainable energy sources, and urban designs that promote active lifestyles, are likely to alleviate the societal burden of global warming and obesity.

The Pandora multi-algorithm approach to automated pattern recognition of cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector

The development and operation of liquid-argon time-projection chambers for neutrino physics has created a need for new approaches to pattern recognition in order to fully exploit the imaging capabilities offered by this technology. Whereas the human brain can excel at identifying features in the recorded events, it is a significant challenge to develop an automated, algorithmic solution. The Pandora Software Development Kit provides functionality to aid the design and implementation of pattern-recognition algorithms. It promotes the use of a multi-algorithm approach to pattern recognition, in which individual algorithms each address a specific task in a particular topology. Many tens of algorithms then carefully build up a picture of the event and, together, provide a robust automated pattern-recognition solution. This paper describes details of the chain of over one hundred Pandora algorithms and tools used to reconstruct cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector. Metrics that assess the current pattern-recognition performance are presented for simulated MicroBooNE events, using a selection of final-state event topologies.

Childhood obesity and school absenteeism: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Regular school attendance is a key determinant of student's academic achievement and psychosocial development. Obesity may affect children's school attendance through its detrimental impact on their physical and mental health. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library for articles published until April 2017 that examined the relationship between unhealthy body weight and school absenteeism among children and adolescents. Thirteen studies total (10 cross-sectional and three longitudinal) conducted in seven countries were identified. The mean and median sample sizes were 24,861 and 3,113, respectively. Ten studies objectively measured children's height and weight, and three were based on parents' self-report. Four studies measured absenteeism using school administrative data, and nine administered questionnaires on children's parents. Among them, 11 reported a statistically significant positive association between childhood overweight/obesity and school absence, whereas two reported null effect. The meta-analysis found that the odds of being absent from school was 27% and 54% higher among children with overweight and obesity than among their normal weight counterparts, respectively. Future studies should adopt an experimental study design and accurate measures on school attendance and delineate the underlining pathways linking childhood obesity to school absenteeism through obesity-related illnesses and psychosocial problems.
