Abstract
The adherence of foodborne microorganisms threatens human health, necessitating the development of antibacterial food packaging films. In this study, the antibacterial agent carvacrol (CV), hindered by its high volatility and intense aromatic odor, was encapsulated within the photosensitive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material PCN-224 (loading rate 50%). Subsequently, the microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS) technique was employed for the rapid fabrication of CV@PCN-224/polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS) nanofiber films. The incorporation of CV@PCN-224 NPs enhances the nanofiber films' thermal stability and mechanical properties and improves the water vapor permeability while maintaining the sustained release of CV over an extended period and good biocompatibility. Due to the simultaneous loading of antibacterial agent (CV) and photosensitive agent (PCN-224), the CV@PCN-224/PCL/CS films exhibited good synergistic antibacterial functionality, as demonstrated by effective inhibition against both E. coli and S. aureus. All results show the vast potential of the prepared nanofiber films in antibacterial food packaging.

Abstract
Recently, fiber-based and functional paper food packaging has garnered significant attention for its versatility, excellent performance, and potential to provide sustainable solutions to the food packaging industry. Fiber-based food packaging is characterized by its large surface area, adjustable porosity and customizability, while functional paper-based food packaging typically exhibits good mechanical strength and barrier properties. This review summarizes the latest research progress on food packaging based on fibers and functional paper. Firstly, the raw materials used for preparing fiber and functional paper, along with their physical and chemical properties and roles in food packaging, were discussed. Subsequently, the latest advancements in the application of fiber and paper materials in food packaging were introduced. This paper also discusses future research directions and potential areas for improvement in fiber and functional paper food packaging to further enhance their effectiveness in ensuring food safety, quality, and sustainability.

Abstract
Over the last decade, scientists have shifted their focus to the development of smart carriers for the delivery of chemotherapeutics in order to overcome the problems associated with traditional chemotherapy, such as poor aqueous solubility and bioavailability, low selectivity and targeting specificity, off-target drug side effects, and damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Nanofiber-based drug delivery systems have recently emerged as a promising drug delivery system in cancer therapy owing to their unique structural and functional properties, including tunable interconnected porosity, a high surface-to-volume ratio associated with high entrapment efficiency and drug loading capacity, and high mass transport properties, which allow for controlled and targeted drug delivery. In addition, they are biocompatible, biodegradable, and capable of surface functionalization, allowing for target-specific delivery and drug release. One of the most common fiber production methods is electrospinning, even though the relatively two-dimensional (2D) tightly packed fiber structures and low production rates have limited its performance. Forcespinning is an alternative spinning technology that generates high-throughput, continuous polymeric nanofibers with 3D structures. Unlike electrospinning, forcespinning generates fibers by centrifugal forces rather than electrostatic forces, resulting in significantly higher fiber production. The functionalization of nanocarriers on nanofibers can result in smart nanofibers with anticancer capabilities that can be activated by external stimuli, such as light. This review addresses current trends and potential applications of light-responsive and dual-stimuli-responsive electro- and forcespun smart nanofibers in cancer therapy, with a particular emphasis on functionalizing nanofiber surfaces and developing nano-in-nanofiber emerging delivery systems for dual-controlled drug release and high-precision tumor targeting. In addition, the progress and prospective diagnostic and therapeutic applications of light-responsive and dual-stimuli-responsive smart nanofibers are discussed in the context of combination cancer therapy.

Abstract
The threat posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the challenge of biofilm formation has highlighted the inadequacies of conventional antibacterial therapies, leading to increased interest in antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in recent years. This approach offers advantages such as minimal invasiveness, low systemic toxicity, and notable effectiveness against drug-resistant bacterial strains. Porphyrins and their derivatives, known for their high molar extinction coefficients and singlet oxygen quantum yields, have emerged as crucial photosensitizers in aPDT. However, their practical application is hindered by challenges such as poor water solubility and aggregation-induced quenching. To address these limitations, extensive research has focused on the development of porphyrin-based nanomaterials for aPDT, enhancing the efficacy of photodynamic sterilization and broadening the range of antimicrobial activity. This review provides an overview of various porphyrin-based nanomaterials utilized in aPDT and biofilm eradication in recent years, including porphyrin-loaded inorganic nanoparticles, porphyrin-based polymer assemblies, supramolecular assemblies, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Additionally, insights into the prospects of aPDT is offered, highlighting its potential for practical implementation.

Abstract
Strawberries spoil rapidly after harvest due to factors such as the ripening process, weight loss, and, most importantly, microbial contamination. Traditionally, several methods are used to preserve strawberries after harvest and extend their shelf life, including thermal, plasma, radiation, chemical, and biological treatments. Although these methods are effective, they are a concern from the perspective of safety and consumer acceptance of the treated food. To address these issues, more advanced environment-friendly technologies have been developed over the past decades, including modified and controlled atmosphere packaging, active biopolymer-based packaging, or edible coating formulations. This method can not only significantly extend the shelf life of fruit but also solve safety concerns. Some studies have shown that combining two or more of these technologies can significantly extend the shelf life of strawberries, which could significantly contribute to expanding the global supply chain for delicious fruit. Despite the large number of studies underway in this field of research, no systematic review has been published discussing these advances. This review aims to cover important information about postharvest physiology, decay factors, and preservation methods of strawberry fruits. It is a pioneering work that integrates, relates, and discusses all information on the postharvest fate and handling of strawberries in one place. Additionally, commercially used techniques were discussed to provide insight into current developments in strawberry preservation and suggest future research directions in this field of study. This review aims to enrich the knowledge of academic and industrial researchers, scientists, and students on trends and developments in postharvest preservation and packaging of strawberry fruits.

Abstract
Green food packaging plays an important role in environmental protection and sustainable development. Therefore, it is advisable to employ low-energy consumption manufacturing techniques, select environmentally friendly materials, and focus on cost-effectiveness with high production yields during the production process. In this study, an amphiphilic polyquaternium called PBzCl was proposed and synthesized by free radical polymerization of cost-efficient quaternary ammonium salts and methacrylate monomers. Then, biodegradable PCL and PVP were used to rapidly prepare the PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofiber films via environmentally friendly microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS). The best antibacterial effect was observed at a PBzCl loading concentration of 13.5%, and the PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofiber films had 91% and 100% antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Besides, the loading of PBzCl improved the water stability of the PCL/PVP nanofiber films, and the films also showed excellent biocompatibility. Overall, PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofibre films have promising food packaging potential.

Abstract
Using novel active food packaging has gradually become a daily necessity in terms of impeding microbial contamination. Here, an antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (PDI) pH-responsive film is developed by incorporating aloe-emodin (AE) into a vehicle of gelatin/chitosan (GC). Besides enhancement in hydrophobicity, the well-dispersed crystals of AE in the GC matrix by hydrogen bonding can upgrade the film's mechanical strength and barrier. The matrix is capable of regulating the release of AE in response to acidic stimuli by a combination mechanism of diffusion and polymer relaxation. Being benefitted from the inherent bioactivity of AE and the PDI activity under visible light irradiation (i.e., 456 nm), the target film of GC-AE2 has excellent antibacterial effect towards Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, showing bacterial viability of 9.93 ± 1.33 % and 14.85 ± 1.16 %, respectively. Furthermore, the film can effectively thwart Botrytis cinerea infection in cherry tomatoes, demonstrating its potential in preventing the microbial spoilage of postharvest fruits.

Abstract
The development of novel packaging materials with antimicrobial properties is crucial in preventing the microbial-induced spoilage of fruits, vegetables, and foodborne illnesses. In this study, homojunction g-C3N4 (HCN) photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic performance were incorporated into a matrix consisting of pullulan/chitosan (Pul/CS). These photocatalysts were then electrostatically spun onto polylactic acid (PLA) films to fabricate PLA@Pul/CS/HCN nanofibrous composite films. The design of the bilayer films aimed to combine the physical properties of PLA film with the excellent antibacterial properties of nanofiber films, thereby achieving synergistic advantages. The incorporation of the HCN photocatalysts resulted in enhanced hydrophobicity, barrier function, and mechanical properties of the composite films. Under visible light irradiation, the PLA@Pul/CS/HCN films exhibited approximately 3.43 log and 3.11 log reductions of Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), respectively, within 2 h. The excellent antimicrobial performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect of CS and the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from HCN. Moreover, the strawberries packaged in the PLA@Pul/CS/HCN film demonstrated diminished quality degradation and a prolonged shelf life following visible light irradiation treatment. This study will provide new insights into the exploration of safe and efficient antimicrobial food packaging.

Abstract
Exploring biopolymer-based antibacterial packaging materials is promising to tackle the issues caused by petroleum plastic pollution and microbial contamination. Herein, a novel packaging material with two antibacterial modes, continuous and efficient, is constructed by dispersing positively charged spermidine carbon dots (Spd-CDs) in a carrageenan/polyvinyl alcohol (CP) composite biopolymer. The obtained nanocomposite film (CP/CDs film) not only gradually releases the ultra-small Spd-CDs but also rapidly generates reactive oxygen species to inhibit the reproduction of E. coli and S. aureus. Benefiting from the complementary advantages of carrageenan and polyvinyl alcohol, as well as the addition of Spd-CDs, the CP/CDs films exhibit high transparency, good mechanical performance, water vapor barrier ability, low migration, etc. The CP/CDs film as a packaging material is validated to be effective in preventing microbial contamination of pork samples. Our prepared nanocomposite film with sustainability and efficient antibacterial properties is expected as food active packaging.

Abstract
This study aimed to encapsulate Malva sylvestris extract (MSE) into chitosan-carrageenan (CH-KC) fibers using the electrospinning technique and monitor the freshness of silver carp fillets during the refrigerated storage conditions for 8 days. The CH-KC + MSE 4 % fiber mats were red at pH values lower than 3, purple at pH 4-6, dark blue at pH 7, green at pH 8-10, and brown at pH 11-12. The tensile strength, elongation at break, water vapor permeability, oxygen transmission rate, moisture content, and water solubility of fabricated fiber mats were 7.71-11.02 MPa, 13.12 %-30.00 %, 7.35-20.01 × 10-4 g mm/m2 h Pa, 3.81-8.23 cm3/m2 h, 15.74 %-27.34 %, and 3.90 %-7.56 %, respectively. Regarding the potential application of a fabricated indicator for freshness monitoring of silver carp fillets, total viable count, psychrotrophic bacterial count, pH, and total volatile basic nitrogen reached 8.91 log CFU/g, 8.03 log CFU/g, 8.10, and 40.18 mg N/100 g at the end of the study, respectively. Meanwhile, the CH-KC + MSE 4 % fiber mat color changed from white to green. These findings suggest that CH-KC + MSE 4 % fiber mats can be further utilized in the food industry to control the freshness of refrigerated silver carp fillets.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded metal-organic frameworks (CEO@MOF) on the properties of gelatin/pullulan (Gel/Pull)-based composite films (Gel/Pull-based films). The incorporation of CEO@MOF into Gel/Pull-based films demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. enterica, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes. Additionally, CEO@MOF integrated film exhibited a 98.16 % ABTS radical scavenging, with no significant change in the mechanical properties of the neat Gel/Pull film. The UV blocking efficiency of the composite films increased significantly from 81.38 to 99.56 % at 280 nm with the addition of 3 wt% CEO@MOF. Additionally, Gel/Pull/CEO@MOF films effectively extended the shelf life of meat preserved at 4 °C by reducing moisture loss by 3.35 %, maintaining the pH within the threshold limit (6.2), and inhibiting bacterial growth by 99.9 %. These results propose that CEO@MOF has significant potential as an effective additive in active packaging to improve shelf life and food safety.

Abstract
The electrospinning technology has set off a tide and given rise to the attention of a widespread range of research territories, benefiting from the enhancement of nanofibers which made a spurt of progress. Nanofibers, continuously produced via electrospinning technology, have greater specific surface area and higher porosity and play a non-substitutable key role in many fields. Combined with the degradability and compatibility of the natural structure characteristics of polysaccharides, electrospun polysaccharide nanofiber membranes gradually infiltrate into the life field to help filter air contamination particles and water pollutants, treat wounds, keep food fresh, monitor electronic equipment, etc., thus improving the life quality. Compared with the evaluation of polysaccharide-based nanofiber membranes in a specific field, this paper comprehensively summarized the existing electrospinning technology and focused on the latest research progress about the application of polysaccharide-based nanofiber in different fields, represented by starch, chitosan, and cellulose. Finally, the benefits and defects of electrospun are discussed in brief, and the prospects for broadening the application of polysaccharide nanofiber membranes are presented for the glorious expectation dedicated to the progress of the eras.

Abstract
Essential oils have become increasingly popular in fields of medical, food and agriculture, owing to their strongly antimicrobial, anti-inflammation and antioxidant effects, greatly meeting demand from consumers for healthy and safe natural products. However, the easy volatility and/or chemical instability of active ingredients of essential oils (EAIs) can result in the loss of activity before realizing their functions, which have greatly hindered the widely applications of EAIs. As an emerging trend, micro/mesoporous nanomaterials (MNs) have drawn great attention for encapsulation and controlled release of EAIs, owing to their tunable pore structural characteristics. In this review, we briefly discuss the recent advances of MNs that widely used in the controlled release of EAIs, including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs), and provide a comprehensive summary focusing on the pore engineering strategies of MNs that affect their controlled-release or triggered-release for EAIs, including tailorable pore structure properties (e.g., pore size, pore surface area, pore volume, pore geometry, and framework compositions) and surface properties (surface modification and surface functionalization). Finally, the variegated applications and potential challenges are also given for MNs based delivery strategies for EAIs in the fields of healthcare, food and agriculture. These will provide considerable instructions for the rational design of MNs for controlled release of EAIs.

Abstract
Pullulan is naturally occurring polysaccharide exhibited potential applications for food preservation has gained increasing attention over the last half-century. Recent studies focused on efficient preservation and targeted inhibition using active composite ingredients and advanced technologies. This has led to the emergence of pullulan-based biofilm preservation. This review extensively studied the characteristics of pullulan-based films and coatings, including their mechanical strength, water vapor permeability, thermal stability, and potential as a microbial agent. Furthermore, the distinct characteristics of pullulan, production methods, and activation strategies, such as pullulan derivatization, various compounded ingredients (plant extracts, microorganisms, and animal additives), and other technologies (e.g., ultrasound), are thoroughly studied for the functional property enhancement of pullulan-based films and coatings, ensuring optimal preservation conditions for diverse food products. Additionally, we explore hypotheses that further illuminate pullulan's potential as an eco-friendly bioactive material for food packaging applications. In addition, this review evaluates various methods to improve the efficiency of the film-forming mechanism, such as improving the direct coating process, bioactive packaging films, and implementing layer-by-layer coatings. Finally, current analyses put forward suggestions for future advancement in pullulan-based bioactive films, with the aim of expanding their range of potential applications.

Abstract
Increasing demand for high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables has led to the development of innovative active packaging materials that exhibit controlled release of antimicrobial/antioxidant agents. In this study, composite biopolymer films consisting of methylcellulose (MC) and chitosan nanofibers (ChNF) were fabricated, which contained lactoferrin (LAC)-loaded silver-metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) nanoparticles. The results indicated that the nanoparticles were uniformly distributed throughout the biopolymer films, which led to improvements in tensile strength (56.1 ± 3.2 MPa), thermal stability, water solubility, swelling index, water vapor barrier properties (from 2.2 ± 2.1 to 1.9 ± 1.9 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s. Pa), and UV-shielding effects. The Ag-MOF-LAC2% films also exhibited strong and long-lasting antibacterial activity against E. coli (19.8 ± 5.2 mm) and S. aureus (20.1 ± 3.2 mm), which was attributed to the slow release of antimicrobial LAC from the films. The composite films were shown to maintain the fresh appearance of apples for at least seven days, which was attributed to their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Consequently, these composite films have the potential in the assembly of innovative active packaging materials for protecting fresh fruits and vegetables. However, further work is required to ensure their safety and economic viability.

Abstract
In the context of food waste and human diseases caused by food pollution, color renderement intelligent packaging came into being. Improving its indicator stability and sensitivity is essential for application. On the basis of our previous work, corn starch/polyvinyl alcohol was used as the matrix, the synthesized zirconium-based UiO-66 and anthocyanin-loaded ovalbumin-carboxymethylcellulose nanocomposites were embedded in to stabilize anthocyanins and improve gas adsorption performance of film. The study found that incorporating appropriate amount of UiO-66 (3%) in films resulted in uniform distribution and formation of holes. Mechanical properties, water stability and barrier properties were significantly improved, and gas adsorption capacity increased by approximately 10 times. More crucially, films that incorporate UiO-66 can react more quickly and visibly to lower concentrations of ammonia gas. The color change of SP/OVA-CMC-ACNs/3% UiO-66 film was noticeable (from purple to gray and then to green) when applied to monitor freshness of shrimp and pork.

Abstract
Electrospinning is one of the most promising techniques for producing biopolymer nanofibers for various applications. Proteins and polysaccharides, among other biopolymers, are attractive substrates for electrospinning due to their favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, there are still challenges to improve the mechanical properties, water sensitivity and biological activity of biopolymer nanofibers. Therefore, these strategies such as polymer blending, application of cross-linking agents, the addition of nanoparticles and bioactive components, and modification of biopolymer have been developed to enhance the properties of biopolymer nanofibers. Among them, antibacterial aroma compounds (AACs) from essential oils are widely used as bioactive components and property modifiers in various biopolymer nanofibers to enhance the functionality, hydrophobicity, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of nanofibers, which depends on the electrospun strategy of AACs. This review summarizes the recently reported antimicrobial activities and applications of AACs, and compares the effects of four electrospinning strategies for encapsulating AACs on the properties and applications of nanofibers. The authors focus on the correlation of the main characteristics of these biopolymer electrospun nanofibers with the encapsulation strategy of AACs in the nanofibers. Moreover, this review also particularly emphasizes the impact of the characteristics of these nanofibers on their application field of antimicrobial materials.

Abstract
The development of sustainable and well-performing food packaging materials takes on critical significance, whereas it is still challenging. To overcome the shortcomings of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a degradable packaging material, in this work, hydrophobic quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) modified cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and tannic acid‑iron ion coordination complexes (TA-Fe) were adopted for the preparation of functional PVA films. The modified CNF (CNF-QAS) not only improved the mechanical properties and water resistance of PVA, but also endowed it with antibacterial ability. In addition, the synergistic antibacterial capability with CNF-QAS was achieved using TA-Fe with photothermal therapy. As a result, the modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength, and water contact angle of the prepared PVA films were examined as 88 MPa, 200 %, 11.7 MPa, and 94.8°, respectively. Furthermore, with the assistance of CNF-QAS and TA-Fe, the films inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus by 99.8 % and 99.7 %, respectively, and they exhibited high cell viability of 90.5 % for L929 fibroblasts. Based on the above encouraging properties, the functional PVA films could significantly extend the shelf life of oranges for over two weeks, proving the excellent application prospects in the food packaging field.

Abstract
Membrane separation is considered an effective approach to water purification. Nevertheless, membrane fouling dramatically decreases the separation efficiency and lifetime of membranes, thus limiting its further development and application. Herein, a multifunctional self-cleaning MIL-88A(Fe) decorated polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (MIL-88A(Fe)@PVA-SA) nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning and in-situ growth methods for the separation of oil/water emulsions and photo-Fenton degradation of dyes. The membrane possesses superhydrophilicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 0° and superoleophobicity with underwater oil contact angle (UCA) of 161.7°, and exhibits superior separation efficiency (>99.5 %) and permeation flux (1140-2455 L/m2/h) for different oil/water emulsions. Moreover, the membrane exhibited an outstanding photo-Fenton performance under visible light, with degradation efficiencies (~99.9 %) towards methylene blue (MB) and reactive red 24 (RR24) within 90 min. Importantly, the membrane can be easily regenerated by simple rinsing and photo-Fenton self-cleaning treatment. In this study, MIL-88A(Fe)@PVA-SA nanofiber membrane has a promising application in dye removal and oil/water separation, providing a new idea to develop novel membrane materials.

Abstract
In this study, antimicrobial biocomposite films based on gelatin-κ-carrageenan (Gκ) with 1, 2 and 4 % lactoferrin (L) loaded chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (L@Cr-MOFs) nanoparticles were synthesized by casting methods. The addition of L loaded Cr-MOFs into Gκ based films increased elongation at break from 2.19 to 14.92 % and decreased the tensile strength from 65.1 to 31.22 MPa. L@Cr-MOFs addition reduced swelling index (from 105 to 70.8 %), water solubility (from 61.3 to 34.63 %) and water vapor permeability (from 2.46 to 2.19 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s). When the additional amount was 4 wt%, the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films showed antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zone of 19.7 mm and 20.2 mm, respectively. In addition, strawberries preservation trial shown that the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films delayed the growth of spoilage molds on the surface of fruits. This research indicated that Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs are promising active packaging materials for the preservation of perishable fruits.

Abstract
Edible films applied in food packaging must possess excellent inhibitory and mechanical properties. Protein-based films exhibit a high capacity for film formation and offer good gas barrier properties. However, they have weak mechanical and water barrier characteristics. The objective of this research was to develop active composite films based on reinforced soy protein isolate (SPI)/Kappa-carrageenan (K) with varying concentrations of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCN). Increasing the BCN concentration improved the morphological, structural, mechanical, water vapor barrier, and moisture content properties. In comparison to the pure SPI film (S), the film with a high BCN concentration demonstrated a significant decrease in WS (22.98 ± 0.78 %), MC (21.72 ± 0.68 %), WVP (1.22 ± 0.14 g mm-1 S-1 Pa-1 10-10), and EAB (57.77 ± 5.25 %) properties. It should be emphasized that there was no significant alteration in the physicomechanical properties of the optimal film (SKB0.75) containing Zenian-loaded metal-organic frameworks (ZM). However, it substantially enhanced the thermal stability of this film, which can be attributed to the strong interfacial interactions between polymer chains and ZM. Furthermore, the ZM films inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria and increased the DPPH antioxidant activity. Thus, SKB0.75-ZM2 films can be utilized as practical components in food packaging.

Abstract
Innovative active and pH-colorimetric composite films were fabricated from gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Gel/PVA) integrated with copper-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) and red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA). The incorporation of Cu-MOFs improved the tensile strength, water resistance, and UV shielding properties of the developed composite films. The addition of anthocyanins and 3 wt% Cu-MOFs endowed the polymer matrix with excellent antioxidant (100 % against ABTS and DPPH radicals) and antibacterial (against Gram-positive and Gram-negative foodborne pathogenic bacteria) functions. The fabricated composite films exhibited significant color change at alkaline conditions of pH 7-12 and a marked color change upon exposure to ammonia. The designed indicator films used for shrimp freshness tracking and a visual color change from pink (for fresh shrimp) to green (for spoiled shrimp) was observed during storage at 28 °C for 24 h. The potential applications of the engineered composite films were studied by shrimp packaging, and the quality parameters of packaged samples were monitored during storage. The synergistic effects of adding anthocyanins and MOF nanostructures works for better product freshness preservation and responds well to shrimp spoilage level, introducing novel active and intelligent packaging options for practical smart packaging applications.

Abstract
The incorporation of different functional fillers has been widely used to improve the properties of polymeric materials. The polyhydroxy structure of PVA with excellent film-forming ability can be easily combined with organic/inorganic multifunctional compounds, and such an interesting combining phenomenon can create a variety of functional materials in the field of materials science. The composite membrane material obtained by combining MOF material with high porosity, specific surface area, and adjustable structure with PVA, a non-toxic and low-cost polymer material with good solubility and biodegradability, can combine the processability of PVA with the excellent performance of porous filler MOFs, solving the problem that the poor machinability of MOFs and the difficulty of recycling limit the practical application of powdered MOFs and improving the physicochemical properties of PVA, maximizing the advantages of the material to develop a wider range of applications. Firstly, we systematically summarize the preparation of MOF/PVA composite membrane materials using solution casting, electrostatic spinning, and other different methods for such excellent properties, in addition to discussing in detail the various applications of MOF/PVA composite membranes in water treatment, sensing, air purification, separation, antibacterials, and so on. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the difficulties that need to be overcome during the film formation process to affect the performance of the composite film and offer encouraging solutions.

Abstract
Biofilms are the primary source of contamination linked to nosocomial infections by promoting bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents, including disinfectants. Using essential oils, this study aims to inhibit and eradicate the biofilm of enterobacteria and staphylococci responsible for nosocomial infections at Guelma Hospital, northeastern Algeria. Thymbra capitata, Thymus pallescens and Artemesia herba-alba essential oils were evaluated against clinical strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils under consideration was assessed using an agar disc diffusion assay and the determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). In addition, the crystal violet method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluated biofilm inhibition and eradication by those antimicrobial agents. The results indicate that T. pallescens essential oil was the most effective antimicrobial agent against pathogenic bacteria, with large zones of inhibition (up to 50 mm against S. aureus), low MICs (0.16 to 0.63 mg/mL), and powerful biofilm eradication up to 0.16 mg/mL in both 24 h and 60-min exposure times. Thus, Algerian thyme and oregano could be used in various ways to combat the biofilm that causes nosocomial infection in local hospitals.

Abstract
Globally, food safety and security are receiving a lot of attention to ensure a steady supply of nutrient-rich and safe food. Nanotechnology is used in a wide range of technical processes, including the development of new materials and the enhancement of food safety and security. Nanomaterials are used to improve the protective effects of food and help detect microbial contamination, hazardous chemicals, and pesticides. Nanosensors are used to detect pathogens and allergens in food. Food processing is enhanced further by nanocapsulation, which allows for the delivery of bioactive compounds, increases food bioavailability, and extends food shelf life. Various forms of nanomaterials have been developed to improve food safety and enhance agricultural productivity, including nanometals, nanorods, nanofilms, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanolayers, and nanosheets. Such materials are used for developing nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanomaterials to induce plant growth, genome modification, and transgene expression in plants. Nanomaterials have antimicrobial properties, promote plants' innate immunity, and act as delivery agents for active ingredients. Nanocomposites offer good acid-resistance capabilities, effective recyclability, significant thermostability, and enhanced storage stability. Nanomaterials have been extensively used for the targeted delivery and release of genes and proteins into plant cells. In this review article, we discuss the role of nanotechnology in food safety and security. Furthermore, we include a partial literature survey on the use of nanotechnology in food packaging, food safety, food preservation using smart nanocarriers, the detection of food-borne pathogens and allergens using nanosensors, and crop growth and yield improvement; however, extensive research on nanotechnology is warranted.

Abstract
Non-biodegradability and disposal problems are the major challenges associated with synthetic plastic packaging. This review article discusses a new generation of biodegradable active and smart packaging based on porous nanomaterials (PNMs), which maintains the quality and freshness of food products while meeting biodegradability requirements. PNMs have recently gained significant attention in the field of food packaging due to their large surface area, peculiar structures, functional flexibility, and thermal stability. We present for the first time the recently published literature on the incorporation of various PNMs into renewable materials to develop advanced, environmentally friendly, and high-quality packaging technology. Various emerging packaging technologies are discussed in this review, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it provides general information about PNMs, their characterization, and fabrication methods. It also briefly describes the effects of different PNMs on the functionality of biopolymeric films. Furthermore, we examined how smart packaging loaded with PNMs can improve food shelf life and reduce food waste. The results indicate that PNMs play a critical role in improving the antimicrobial, thermal, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of natural packaging materials. These tailor-made materials can simultaneously extend the shelf life of food while reducing plastic usage and food waste.

Abstract
Thymol (THY) is commonly used in active food packaging, however because of its high volatility, poor water solubility, and strong aromatic odor, the application of THY is facing challenges. Herein, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized in room temperature by asymmetric monomer exchange method for THY encapsulation, and solution blow spinning was used to fabricate the THY@COF/polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous films. The synthesized COFs had a large specific surface area, porous structure, and loading capacity of 30.35% for THY, and THY@COFs possessed good thermal stability. Characterization analysis showed that THY@COFs were successfully incorporated into the PCL films and increased the barrier property of the films. Besides, the films showed good biocompatibility and antibacterial activity. Moreover, THY@COF/PCL films exhibited temperature-responsive THY release profiles, which is important for practical preservation applications, especially for preserving food in warm environments. Overall, THY@COF/PCL films possess promising potential in active food packaging.

Abstract
Ethylene, a ripening hormone, is critical in limiting the shelf life of fresh produce, specifically climacteric fruits and vegetables. A simple and benign fabrication approach is used to transform sugarcane bagasse, an agro-industrial waste into lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNF). In this investigation, biodegradable film was fabricated using LCNF (extracted from sugarcane bagasse) and guar gum (GG) which was reinforced with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8/zeolite. The LCNF/GG film not only acts as a biodegradable matrix to hold the ZIF-8/zeolite composite, but also possesses ethylene scavenging, antioxidant, and UV-blocking properties. The characterization results suggested that pure LCNF showed antioxidant activity of around 69.55 %. The LCNF/GG/MOF-4 film has shown lowest UV-transmittance (5.06 %) and highest ethylene scavenging capacity (40.2 %) among all the samples. After 6 days of storage at 25 ± 2 °C, packaged control bananas samples underwent significant degradation. In contrast, a banana package consisting of LCNF/GG/MOF-4 film maintained their high quality in terms of colour. Fabricated novel biodegradable film has potential application prospects for being used in prolonging the shelf life of fresh produce.

Abstract
Active packaging that can extend the shelf-life of fresh fruits and vegetables after picking can assure food quality and avoid food waste. Such packaging can prevent the growth of microbial and bacterial pathogens or delay the production of ethylene, which accelerates the ripening of fruits and vegetables after harvesting. Proposed technologies include packaging that enables the degradation of ethylene, modified atmosphere packaging, and bioactive packaging. Packaging that can efficiently adsorb/desorb ethylene, and thus control its concentration, is particularly promising. However, there are still large challenges around toxicity, low selectivity, and consumer acceptability. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are porous, have a specific surface area, and have excellent gas adsorption/desorption performance. They can encapsulate and release ethylene and are thus good candidates for use in ethylene-adjusting packaging. This review focuses on MOF-based active-packaging materials and their applications in post-harvest fruit and vegetable packaging. The fabrication and characterization of MOF-based materials and the ethylene adsorption/desorption mechanism of MOF-based packaging and its role in fruit and vegetable preservation are described. The design of MOF-based packaging and its applications are reviewed. Finally, the potential future uses of MOF-based active materials in fresh food packaging are considered.

Abstract
Wound dressings with outstanding biocompatibility, antimicrobial, and tissue regeneration activities are essential to manage emerging recalcitrant antifungal infections to speed up healing. In this study, we have engineered p-cymene-loaded gellan/PVA nanofibers using electrospinning. Morphological and physicochemical properties of the nanofibers were characterized using a multitude of techniques to validate the successful integration of p-cymene (p-cym). The fabricated nanomaterials exhibited strong antibiofilm activity against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata compared to pure p-cymene. In vitro biocompatibility assay demonstrated that nanofibers did not possess any cytotoxicity to the NIH3T3 cell lines. In vivo, full-thickness excision wound healing study showed that the nanofibers were able to heal skin lesions faster than the conventional clotrimazole gel in 24 days without forming any scar. These findings unraveled p-cymene-loaded gellan gum (GA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers as an effective biomaterial for cutaneous tissue regeneration.

Abstract
To prevent food spoilage caused by microbial infection, the development of an environmentally friendly antimicrobial preservation material is crucial. Here, the microporous γ-CD-MOFs was utilized to encapsulate the hydrophobic active substance curcumin, resulting in the preparation of a non-toxic antimicrobial material (Cur-CD-MOFs). The results revealed that curcumin encapsulation in Cur-CD-MOFs occurred primarily in the carbonyl group, benzene ring, and enolic side ring of curcumin. The Cur-CD-MOFs had a 100% bactericidal effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at 4 h and 8 h, and a strong inhibitory effect on aerial mycelium of Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea. Furthermore, the incorporation of Cur-CD-MOFs improved the Pul/Tre film barrier and mechanical properties. The effectiveness of Cur-CD-MOFs-Pul/Tre in retaining fruit freshness was validated using Centennial Seedless grapes. This study confirmed that Cur-CD-MOFs is a promising antibacterial material, and Cur-CD-MOFs-Pul/Tre will be a potent candidate for food preservation.

Abstract
Nisin, a natural substance from Lactococcus lactis, displays a promising antibacterial ability against the gram-positive bacteria. However, it is susceptible to the external environment, i.e. temperature, pH, and food composition. In this study, a dual stabilization method, coaxial electrospinning, was applied to protect nisin in food packaging materials and the effect of nisin concentration on the properties of the nanofibers was investigated. The core-shell nanofibers with pullulan as a core layer and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) as shell layer were prepared, and then the prepared CMCS-nisin nanogels (CNNGs) using a self-assembly method were loaded into the core layer of the nanofibers as antibacterial agents. The result revealed that the smooth surface can be observed on the nanofibers by microstructure characterization. The CNNGs-loaded nanofibers exhibited enhanced thermal stability and mechanical strength, as well as excellent antibacterial activity. Importantly, the as-formed nanofibers were applied to preserve bass fish and found that the shelf life of bass fish packed by CNNGSs with nisin at a concentration of 8 mg/mL was effectively extended from 9 days to 15 days. Taken together, the CNNGs can be well stabilized with the core-shell nanofibers, thus exerting significantly improved antimicrobial stability and bioactivity. This special structure exerts a great potential for application as food packaging materials to preserve aquatic products.

Abstract
In this study, amphiphilic chitosan (NPCS-CA) was synthesized by grafting quaternary phosphonium salt and cholic acid onto the chain of chitosan, aiming to develop an active edible film based on NPCS-CA and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) incorporated with cinnamon essential oil (CEO) by the casting method. The chemical structure of the chitosan derivative was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and XRD. Through the characterization of FT-IR, TGA, mechanical and barrier properties of the composite films, the optimal proportion of NPCS-CA/PVA was determined as 5/5. And, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the NPCS-CA/PVA (5/5) film with 0.4 % CEO were 20.32 MPa and 65.73 %, respectively. The results revealed that the NPCS-CA/PVA-CEO composite films exhibited an excellent ultraviolet barrier property at 200-300 nm and significantly reduced oxygen permeability, carbon dioxide permeability and water vapor permeability. Furthermore, the antibacterial property of film-forming solutions against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. lagenarium was distinctly improved with the increase of NPCS-CA/PVA proportion. And, the multifunctional films effectively extended the shelf-life of mangoes at 25 °C based on the characterization of surface changes and quality indexes. The NPCS-CA/PVA-CEO films could be developed as biocomposite food packaging material.

Abstract
Biodegradable chitosan/gelatin (CS/GEL) films have attracted attention as food packaging, but the poor water sensitivity and functional limitations of these films should be addressed. In this study, the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES, 0-15 %) consisting of thymol and octanoic acid was used to improve the water resistance and antibacterial performance of the CS/GEL composite films. FTIR and SEM analyses revealed a strong interaction between the CS/GEL matrix and DES. The films blended with DES showed increased water contact angle values and thermal stability. Furthermore, the addition of DES resulted in a significant increase in the elasticity and decrease water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The CS/GEL films blended with 9% DES showed a 38.5% decrease in WVTR compared to those without DES. Additionally, the DES-containing film displayed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Overall, the CS/GEL-DES composite films are expected to contribute an improvement to food packaging.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global crisis with an increasing number of untreatable or exceedingly difficult-to-treat bacterial infections, due to their growing resistance to existing drugs. It is predicted that AMR will be the leading cause of death by 2050. In addition to ongoing efforts on preventive strategies and infection control, there is ongoing research towards the development of novel vaccines, antimicrobial agents, and optimised diagnostic practices to address AMR. However, developing new therapeutic agents and medicines can be a lengthy process. Therefore, there is a parallel ongoing worldwide effort to develop materials for optimised drug delivery to improve efficacy and minimise AMR. Examples of such materials include functionalisation of surfaces so that they can become self-disinfecting or non-fouling, and the development of nanoparticles with promising antimicrobial properties attributed to their ability to damage numerous essential components of pathogens. A relatively new class of materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is also being investigated for their ability to act as carriers of antimicrobial agents, because of their ultrahigh porosity and modular structures, which can be engineered to control the delivery mechanism of loaded drugs. Biodegradable polymers have also been found to show promising applications as antimicrobial carriers; and, recently, several studies have been reported on delivery of antimicrobial drugs using composites of MOF and biodegradable polymers. This review article reflects on MOFs and polymer-MOF composites, as carriers and delivery agents of antimicrobial drugs, that have been studied recently, and provides an overview of the state of the art in this highly topical area of research.

Abstract
Metal-porphyrinic frameworks are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These porous materials exhibit a large number of applications for sustainable development and related environmental considerations. Their attractive features include (1) as a free base or metalated with zinc(II) or iron(II or III), they are environmentally benign, and (2) they absorb visible light and are emissive and semi-conducting, making them convenient tools for sensing agrochemicals. But the key feature that makes these nano-sized pristine materials or their composites in many ways superior to most MOFs is their ability to photo-generate reactive oxygen species with visible light, including singlet oxygen. This review describes important issues related to agriculture, including controlled delivery of pesticides and agrochemicals, detection of pesticides and pathogenic metals, elimination of pesticides and toxic metals, and photodynamic antimicrobial activity, and has an important implication for food safety. This comprehensive review presents the progress of the rather rapid developments of these functional and increasingly nano-sized materials and composites in the area of sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
The development of innovative fibrous materials with valuable multifunctional properties based on biodegradable polymers and modifying additives presents a challenging direction for modern materials science and environmental safety. In this work, high-performance composite fibrous materials based on semicrystalline biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and natural iron-containing porphyrin, hemin (Hmi) were prepared by electrospinning. The addition of Hmi to the feed PHB mixture (at concentrations above 3 wt.%) is shown to facilitate the electrospinning process and improve the quality of the electrospun PHB/Hmi materials: the fibers become uniform, their average diameter decreases down to 1.77 µm, and porosity increases to 94%. Structural morphology, phase composition, and physicochemical properties of the Hmi/PHB fibrous materials were studied by diverse physicochemical methods, including electronic paramagnetic resonance, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, mechanical analysis, etc. The proposed nonwoven Hmi/PHB composites with high porosity, good mechanical properties, and retarded biodegradation due to high antibacterial potential can be used as high-performance and robust materials for biomedical applications, including breathable materials for wound disinfection and accelerated healing, scaffolds for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

Abstract
The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is restricted by the susceptibility of fresh produce to deterioration caused by postharvest physiological and metabolic activities. Developing efficient preservation strategies is thus among the most important scientific issues to be urgently addressed in the field of food science. The incorporation of active agents into a polymer matrix to prepare biodegradable active packaging is being increasingly explored to mitigate the postharvest spoilage of fruits and vegetables during storage. This paper reviews the composition of biodegradable polymers and the methods used to prepare biodegradable active packaging. In addition, the interactions between bioactive ingredients and biodegradable polymers that can lead to plasticizing or cross-linking effects are summarized. Furthermore, the applications of biodegradable active (i.e., antibacterial, antioxidant, ethylene removing, barrier, and modified atmosphere) packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are illustrated. These films may increase sensory acceptability, improve quality, and prolong the shelf life of postharvest products. Finally, the challenges and trends of biodegradable active packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are discussed. This review aims to provide new ideas and insights for developing novel biodegradable active packaging materials and their practical application in the preservation of postharvest fruits and vegetables.
