Abstract
Currently, purification step in the recombinant protein manufacture is still a great challenge and its cost far outweighs those of the upstream process. In this study, a functionalized cellulose-based monolith was constructed as an efficient affinity adsorbent for one-step purification of recombinant proteins. Firstly, the fundamental cellulose monolith (CE monolith) was fabricated based on thermally induced phase separation, followed by being modified with nitrilotriacetic acid anhydride through esterification to give NCE monolith. After chelating with Ni2+, the affinity adsorbent NCE-Ni2+ monolith was obtained, which was demonstrated to possess a hierarchically porous morphology with a relatively high surface area, porosity and compressive strength. The adsorption behavior of NCE-Ni2+ monolith towards β2-microglobulin with 6 N-terminus His-tag (His-β2M) was evaluated through batch and fixed-bed column experiments. The results revealed that NCE-Ni2+ monolith exhibited a relatively fast His-β2M adsorption rate with a maximum adsorption capacity of 329.2 mg/g. The fixed-bed column adsorption implied that NCE-Ni2+ monolith showed high efficiency for His-β2M adsorption. Finally, NCE-Ni2+ monolith was demonstrated to have an excellent His-β2M purification ability from E. coli lysate with exceptional reusability. Therefore, the resultant NCE-Ni2+ monolith had large potential to be used as an efficient adsorbent for recombinant protein purification in practical applications.

Abstract
A novel cellulose composite (denoted as PEI@MMA-1) with porous interconnected structure was prepared by adsorbing methyl cellulose (MC) onto microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cross-linking polyethyleneimine (PEI) with MCC by the action of epichlorohydrin, which had the excellent adsorption property, wettability and elasticity. The performances of PEI@MMA-1 composite for removing tetracycline (TC), Cu2+ and coexistent pollutant (TC and Cu2+ mixture) were systematically explored. For single TC or Cu2+ contaminant, the maximum adsorption capacities were 75.53 and 562.23 mg/g at 30 °C, respectively, while in the dual contaminant system, they would form complexes and Cu2+ could play a "bridge" role to remarkably promote the adsorption of TC with the maximum adsorption capacities of 281.66 and 253.58 mg/g for TC and Cu2+. In addition, the adsorption kinetics, isotherms and adsorption mechanisms of single-pollutant and dual-pollutant systems have been thoroughly investigated. Theoretical calculations indicated that the amide group of TC molecule with the assistance of Cu2+ interacted with the hydroxyl group of PEI@MMA-1 composite to enhance the TC adsorption capacity. Cycle regeneration and fixed bed column experiments revealed that the PEI@MMA-1 possessed the excellent stability and utility. Current PEI@MMA-1 cellulose composite exhibited a promising application for remediation of heavy metals and antibiotics coexistence wastewater.

Abstract
Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a main cause of pre-hospital death. Given the importance of hemostatic wound dressings in pre-hospital emergency treatment, novel composite materials are required for fast hemostasis, synergistic bacterial ablation with negligible resistance and wound healing acceleration. Herein, multifunctional SCTF cryogels were fabricated by the simultaneous cross-linking of sodium alginate (SA) and tannic acid (TA) with Fe3+ ions. As a result, the prepared SCTF cryogels consisted of Fe3+/TA-based metal phenolic networks (MPNs) and Fe3+/SA-based 3D skeleton for collagen (CA). MPNs endowed the cryogels with photothermal effect, photothermal-enhanced Fenton activity and pH/photothermal dual-responsive release property of TA and Fe2+, which were beneficial for the antibacterial capacity. Due to the intrinsic high porosity, in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated that SCTF cryogels possessed good hemostatic capacity. Moreover, the synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and pH/photothermal responsive chemo-therapy dramatically enhanced the bactericidal efficacy of SCTF cryogels both in vitro and in vivo. Eventually, their outstanding healing-accelerating effects were confirmed via animal experiments, which were attributed to the presence of CA and TA. Therefore, the developed composite materials could offer new strategy on exploiting multifunctional wound dressing for clinical applications in the future.

Abstract
The development of new bio-based cryogel materials with low environmental impact and various properties such as self-healing, flame-retardancy, low thermal conductivity has emerged as a cutting-edge research topic in special-purpose materials and a significant challenge. Herein, we report a simple processing methodology for preparing new mesoporous light weight thermal insulation biomass hybrid cryogels based on natural and biocompatible polymers, including marine glycosaminoglycan carrageenan moss (CM) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) abbreviated as CM/PMMA under cryo conditions. The mechanical, thermal, and physicochemical characterization of the obtained hybrid cryogel was studied. The effect of increasing thickness on thermal conductivity and compressive strength was investigated. The results show that the thermal conductivity increases from 0.068 W m-1 K-1 to 0.124 W m-1 K-1 with increasing thickness. Also, the compressive strength changed from 89.5% MPa to 95.4% MPa. The results revealed that cryogel has a wrinkled surface and interconnected pores and exhibits high flexibility, self-healing ability, flame retardancy, and low thermal conductivity.

Abstract
The highly efficient removal of bilirubin from blood by hemoperfusion for liver failure therapy remains a challenge in the clinical field due to the low adsorption capacity and poor hemocompatibility of currently used carbon-based adsorbents. Polysaccharide-based cryogels seem to be promising candidates for hemoperfusion adsorbents owing to their inherited excellent hemocompatibility. However, the weak mechanical strength and relatively low adsorption capacity of polysaccharide-based cryogels limited their application in bilirubin adsorption. In this work, we presented a freezing-triggered strategy to fabricate QCS/MFC cryogels, which were formed by quaternized chitosan (QCS) crosslinked with divinylsulfonyl methane (BVSM) and reinforced with microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). Ice crystal exclusions triggered the chemical crosslinking to generate the cryogels with dense pore walls. The obtained QCS/MFC cryogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM, stress-strain test, and hemocompatibility assay, which exhibited interconnected macroporous structures, excellent shape-recovery and mechanical performance, and outstanding blood compatibility. Due to the quaternary ammonium functionalization of chitosan, the QCS/MFC showed a high adsorption capacity of 250 mg g-1 and a short adsorption equilibrium time of 3 h. More importantly, the QCS/MFC still exhibited high adsorption efficiency (over 49.7%) in the presence of 40 g L-1 albumin. Furthermore, the QCS/MFC could also maintain high dynamic adsorption efficiency in self-made hemoperfusion devices. This facile approach provides a new avenue to develop high-performance hemoperfusion adsorbents for bilirubin removal, showing great promise for the translational therapy of hyperbilirubinemia.

Abstract
Nanofibrous materials are considered as promising candidates for fabricating high-efficiency chromatography media, which are urgently needed in protein pharmaceuticals purification and biological research, yet still face several bottlenecks. Herein, novel negatively charged composite nanofibrous hydrogel membranes (NHMs) are obtained by a facile combination of electrospinning and surface coating modification. The resulting NHMs exhibit controllable morphologies and chemical structures. Benefitting from the combined effect of the stable framework of silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanofiber and the function layer of negatively charged hydrogel, as well as good pore connectivity among nanofibers, NHMs exhibit a high protein adsorption capacity of around 1000 mg g-1, and are superior to the commercial cellulose fibrous adsorbent (Sartobind®) and the reported nanofibrous membranous adsorbents. Moreover, due to their relatively stable physicochemical and mechanical properties, NHMs possess comprehensive adsorption performance, favorable resistance to acid and solvents, good selectivity, and excellent regenerability. The designed NHMs composite adsorbents are expected to supply a new protein chromatography platform for effective protein purification in biopharmaceuticals and biochemical reagents.

Abstract
To meet the demand for the separation of specific substances, the construction of porous composite aerogels with a high specific surface area and a strong adsorption capacity is still a challenge. Herein, a sodium alginate/bentonite composite aerogel was efficiently prepared through supercritical fluid drying. The aerogel’s volume shrank less during supercritical drying, maintaining its original three-dimensional mesh structure. The resulting aerogel had a large specific surface area (445 m2/g), a low density (0.059 g/cm3), and a large pore volume (3.617 cm3/g). Due to the fixation and intercalation effects, bentonite was uniformly dispersed in the sodium alginate matrixes. The adsorption of lysozyme by the composite aerogel was evaluated, and the results showed that the optimal adsorption pH was 8 when the pH of the phosphoric acid buffer solution was between pH = 5 and 8.5. The time for adsorption to reach equilibrium was 8 h. The adsorption capacity increased with the increase in bentonite content, and when the initial concentration of lysozyme was from 0.2 to 1.2 g/L, the adsorption capacity first increased and then stabilized, and the maximum adsorption amount was 697 mg/g. The adsorption behavior was simulated in the isothermal region, and the linear correlation coefficient of Langmuir isothermal adsorption fitting was found to be 0.997. Thus, this composite aerogel with strong adsorption capacity can be used as a good alternative to enzymatic adsorbents or immobilized materials.

Abstract
The availability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and ease of chemical modification make cellulose a promising natural polymer for the production of biomedical materials. Cryogelation is a relatively new and straightforward technique for producing porous light and super-macroporous cellulose materials. The production stages include dissolution of cellulose in an appropriate solvent, regeneration (coagulation) from the solution, removal of the excessive solvent, and then freezing. Subsequent freeze-drying preserves the micro- and nanostructures of the material formed during the regeneration and freezing steps. Various factors can affect the structure and properties of cellulose cryogels, including the cellulose origin, the dissolution parameters, the solvent type, and the temperature and rate of freezing, as well as the inclusion of different fillers. Adjustment of these parameters can change the morphology and properties of cellulose cryogels to impart the desired characteristics. This review discusses the structure of cellulose and its properties as a biomaterial, the strategies for cellulose dissolution, and the factors affecting the structure and properties of the formed cryogels. We focus on the advantages of the freeze-drying process, highlighting recent studies on the production and application of cellulose cryogels in biomedicine and the main cryogel quality characteristics. Finally, conclusions and prospects are presented regarding the application of cellulose cryogels in wound healing, in the regeneration of various tissues (e.g., damaged cartilage, bone tissue, and nerves), and in controlled-release drug delivery.
