Abstract
Aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) has been used as a flame retardant for a long time. Previous studies about AHP employed in flame retardant materials mostly focus on coating, modification, and complex system. It is valuable to explore simple experimental steps to prepare nano hybrids with AHP and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). We found acidic substances could etch zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) to obtain MOF derivatives. Unfortunately, AHP and ZIF-67 could not directly form a hybrid. Therefore, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is introduced as a dual function layer (buffer and support). The CMC resists the complete conversion of ZIF-67 etched by phosphoric acid to amorphous cobalt phosphate hydrate (ACP). Meanwhile, CMC containing hydroxyl groups combines with AHP through electrostatic interaction and coordination bonds. A double-layer hollow MOF derivative is synthesized through this one-stone-two-birds strategy. Due to multiple flame retardant elements and unique nanostructure, this MOF derivative endows epoxy (EP) resin with excellent flame retardancy. With 2.0 wt% addition, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) of EP/AHP/ACP@CMC are decreased by 47.8 and 21.0 %, respectively. This study proposes a novel scheme that converts AHP into MOF derivatives as high-performance FRs.

Abstract
Polylactide is a high potential polymer that can satisfy the growing demand for sustainable and lightweight materials in construction, packaging, and structural applications. However, their high flammability poses a serious concern. Herein, with the aid of solvent exchange and noncovalent interactions, poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) thermoreversible gel was modified with sodium alginate (SA), chitosan (CS), and phytic acid (PA) via a layer-over-layer approach. Freeze-drying of the modified hydrogel furnished a highly flame retardant aerogel with shape stability and no shrinkage. The modified PLLA aerogel (PLLA@SA@CS@PA) exhibited self-extinguishment of flame, the highest limiting oxygen index of any porous polylactide (∼32%), and a tremendous reduction in flammability parameters such as the heat release rate, heat release capacity, total heat release, etc. A comprehensive mechanism of flame retardancy was proposed. This work provides a sustainable strategy for the flame retardant modification of semicrystalline polymer-based aerogels and is expected to expand their practical applications in various industrial sectors.

Abstract
To enhance char formation of flame retardant epoxy (EP) composites, carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) is employed as an etchant for or ZIF-67 derivatives. In the early stage, etching plays a dominant role. The mismatch in size between CM-β-CD opening and ZIF-67 pore leads to the stacking of carboxyl cobalt complexes on the shell. When the reaction time is prolonged, crosslinking occurs between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Crosslinked CM-β-CD weakens and eventually stops the etching process. Triethyl phosphate (TEP), an additive to improve flame retardancy, is also absorbed on the shell in this one-pot synthesis. Herin, the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives can impart multiple functions to MOF. This novel nanohybrid significantly improved flame retardancy of EP composites with only 2.0 wt% loading. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 54.8 and 46.9%, respectively. The integrated multi-element system resulted in an expanded and reinforced char layer. This study proposes a simple and precise method for controlling the structure of MOF-carbohydrate hybrids through competition between chemical reactions.

Abstract
The topic of biobased flame-retardant PLA has always been of great interest. In our study, we successfully synthesized a phosphorus-containing chitosan derivative (PCS) and combined it with aluminum hypophosphate (AP) to create an effective flame-retardant PLA system. PCS acted as an enhancer, enhancing the thermal performance, crystallinity, and toughness of PLA/AP. Compared to PLA modified with 12 wt% AP achieving UL-94 V-2 level and 24.3 % of limited oxygen index, PLA containing 3 wt% PCS and 9 wt% AP achieved UL-94 V-0 level and limited oxygen index of 28 %. The system testing studies such as CCT, Raman, XPS, and TG-IR results indicated that PLA/AP/PCS exhibited a dual flame-retardant mechanism of condensed and gas phases.

Abstract
Phosphoramides, as a kind of high-efficient fire retardants, have been designed in many structures and endowed exceptional fire retardancy to polylactide (PLA). However, due to ignorance of the structure-property correlation, the effect of phosphoramides' structure on the fire retardancy and mechanical properties of PLA is still unclear. Herein, a series of biobased phosphoramides (phosphoramide (V1), linear polyphosphoramide (V2) and hyperbranched polyphosphamide (V3)) were designed and incorporated into PLA, and the structural effect of phosphoramides on the fire-retardant and mechanical properties of PLA was deeply researched. Among three kinds of phosphoramides, the hyperbranched polyphosphoramide is more effective than the corresponding linear polyphosphoramide and phosphoramide in improving the fire-retardant and anti-dripping properties of PLA, and only linear polyphosphoramide shows a positive effect in the mechanical strength of PLA. This work provides a feasible strategy for creating mechanically robust and fire-retardant polymer composites by molecularly tailoring the structure of fire retardants and uncovering their structure-property relationship.

Abstract
Adding bio-based flame retardants to improve the flame retardancy of polymer materials without sacrificing other properties is a great challenge. Herein, a novel flame-retardant CS-DOPA was prepared from chitosan and 10-hydroxy-9,10-dihydro-9-oza-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide by acid-base neutralization reaction and fully characterized. The 4 wt% CS-DOPA modified EP showed good flame retardancy in both gaseous and condensed phase. The peak heat release rate, total smoke production, CO production, and smoke production rate of EP composites containing 4 wt% CS-DOPA were reduced by 55 %, 34 %, 45 %, and 46 %, respectively, to pass the UL-94 V-1 rating with a limiting oxygen index of 34.1 %. The CS-DOPA contributes to the formation of the condensed phase of the thermo-oxidation-resistant high-quality char layer with non-flammable other and phosphorus-containing free radicals released in the gas phase. In addition, EP/4CS-DOPA has good water resistance, mechanical properties, and transparency, with tensile and flexural strength improved by 12.7 % and 13.9 %, respectively, and still has high strength even after water treatment. The present work provides a green and facile strategy to use chitosan as a main raw material to manufacture EP materials with high performance.

Abstract
Despite good biodegradability and mechanical strength, the intrinsic flammability of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) impede its practical application. Introducing phosphoramide is an effective method to enhance the flame retardancy of PLA. However, most of the reported phosphoramides derive from petroleum resources, and their addition tends to deteriorate the mechanical properties, especially toughness, of PLA. Herein, a bio-based, furan-containing polyphosphoramide (DFDP) with high flame-retardant efficiency was synthesized for PLA. Our study found that 2 wt% DFDP enabled PLA to pass a UL-94 V-0 rating, and 4 wt% DFDP increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) to 30.8 %. DFDP effectively maintained the mechanical strength and toughness of PLA. The tensile strength of PLA with 2 wt% DFDP reached 59.9 MPa, and its elongation at break and impact strength were increased by 15.8 % and 34.3 %, respectively, relative to those of virgin PLA. The UV protection of PLA was significantly enhanced by introducing DFDP. Hence, this work provides a sustainable and comprehensive strategy for the creation of flame-retardant biomaterials with improved UV protection and well-preserved mechanical properties, which possess a broad prospect in industrial application.

Preparation and Characterization of Cardanol-Based Flame Retardant for Enhancing the Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Adhesives. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14235205. Abstract
Epoxy resin has a versatile set of applications due to its excellent properties. However, its easily flammable property limits further applications. A bio-based flame retardant, cardanyl diphenylphosphate (CDPP), was successfully synthesized via condensation reaction between cardanol and diphenyl phosphoryl chloride. The chemical structure of CDPP was confirmed via 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To overcome the flammable property of epoxy resin, different amounts of CDPP were incorporated into the epoxy resin. The thermal stability of epoxy resin with CDPP was reduced due to its phosphorus component, which had a relatively weak bond. Meanwhile, the measured char residue of epoxy resin with CDPP was increased compared to its calculated value, which indicated that CDPP promoted the formation of char residue. The limiting oxygen index of epoxy resin with CDPP was enhanced as the amount of CDPP increased from 22.1% for EP0 to 32.7% for EP10. The maximum value of the heat release rate per unit area and total heat release values of EP10 decreased by 23.23% and 12.02%, respectively, as compared to those of EP0. Additionally, single lap shear strength confirmed the improvement in the adhesion property of EP5. The lap shear strength increased to 7.19 MPa for EP5 compared to 6.27 MPa for EP0. This behavior might be due to the higher polarity of the phosphorus components. Based on the findings gathered in the present study, the incorporation of a bio-based flame retardant (CDPP) in epoxy resin has the potential for improving flame retardancy and adhesion property, which will be promising for the industrial area.
