Abstract
APS is a cheap and eco-friendly oxidant which enables one-step extraction of nanochitin (NCh) from fishery wastes. However, it is challenging to improve the preparation efficiency and NCh quality simultaneously, owing to the uneven or uncontrollable oxidation. Herein, we propose a simple and controllable way to isolate chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) from squid pen by gradient heating activated (GHA)- ammonium persulfate (APS) oxidation. Compared to the isothermal activated (ITA)-APS oxidation, our strategy reduced the mass ratio of squid pen to APS from 1:45 to 1:6 and reaction time from 15 h to 8 h. Meanwhile, the as-prepared ChNFs exhibited high yield (91.5 %), light transmittance (98 % at 500 nm), crystallinity index (96.9 %), and carboxyl content (1.53 mmol/g). GHA-APS oxidation involved multiple continuous heating and isothermal stages. The former stimulates a moderate activation of APS and enhances the oxidation rate, while the latter provides a duration for surface chemistry. This non-isothermal heating facilitates the continuous decomposition of APS at a relatively high and consistent rate, thereby enhances its oxidation efficiency. Furthermore, green assessments indicate this method is simple, time-saving, eco-friendly and cost-effective. Overall, this work introduces a novel perspective for the industrial extraction of high-efficiency and high-quality nanomaterials.

Abstract
This study examined the impact of acid hydrolysis, tempo oxidation, and mechanical grinding on the physical, thermal, and structural properties of α-chitin nanocrystals and nanofibers. The manufacturing methods could influence the diameter, functional groups, and crystal patterns of the resulting nanoparticles. Analysis of the DLS results revealed that the size of acidic nanocrystals were smaller and showed improved dispersibility. The XRD patterns indicated that the chemical and mechanical treatments did not alter the crystalline arrangement of the α-chitin. FT-IR spectra analysis revealed that the chemical and mechanical methods did not affect the functional groups of the nanoparticles. DSC results showed that the nanoparticles had good thermal stability up to 400 °C, and it was found that the nanofibers had better thermal resistance due to their longer length. In the FE-SEM images, the nanoparticles were observed as fiber mats with a length of more than 100 nm. It was also found that the diameter of the nanoparticles was less than 100 nm.

Abstract
Chitin nanofibers are widely used in many fields because of their biocompatibility, renewability and excellent mechanical properties. Herein, zwitterionically charged chitin nanofibers (ZC-ChNFs) were prepared from chitin via one step chemical modification (oxalic acid pretreatment) and subsequent ultrasound treatment. Effects of pretreatment time on size of the ZC-ChNFs and pH of ZC-ChNF suspensions on the thickness, porosity, refractive index and antireflective capacity of ZC-ChNF coatings were investigated. It was found that, by adjusting pH of the ZC-ChNF suspension, porosity and refractive index of the ZC-ChNF coatings could be controlled. The ZC-ChNF coatings fabricated with smaller ZC-ChNFs had higher antireflective performance and the transmittance gain of a glass with a ZC-ChNF coating was about 3.5 % at a wavelength of 550 nm compared to the bare glass. The results of this work provide a promising pathway to fabricate antireflective coating with ZC-ChNFs just by controlling the pH of ZC-ChNF suspensions.

Abstract
This Review presents an overview of all-organic nanocomposites, a sustainable alternative to organic-inorganic hybrids. All-organic nanocomposites contain nanocellulose, nanochitin, and aramid nanofibers as highly rigid reinforcing fillers. They offer superior mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics suitable for diverse applications. The Review discusses various methods for preparing the organic nanofillers, including top-down and bottom-up approaches. It highlights in situ polymerization as the preferred method for incorporating these nanomaterials into polymer matrices to achieve homogeneous filler dispersion, a crucial factor for realizing desired performance. Furthermore, the Review explores several applications of all-organic nanocomposites in diverse fields including food packaging, performance-advantaged plastics, and electronic materials. Future research directions-developing sustainable production methods, expanding biomedical applications, and enhancing resistance against heat, chemicals, and radiation of all-organic nanocomposites to permit their use in extreme environments-are explored. This Review offers insights into the potential of all-organic nanocomposites to drive sustainable growth while meeting the demand for high-performance materials across various industries.

Abstract
The present work investigates the effects of nano-chitin with different charge, obtained by acid hydrolysis and TEMPO oxidation, on the structure and properties of borax crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels. In detail, nano-chitin prepared by acid hydrolysis (ACh) is positively charged (+28.8 mV). The electrostatic attraction between ACh and borax ions leads to a maximum tensile stress of composite hydrogel (ACh/PB), 54.25 KPa, 17 times of the borax crosslinked PVA (PB). In contrast, nano-chitin prepared by TEMPO-oxidation (TCh) shows negative charge (-59.0 mV). Due to the electrostatic repulsion with borax ions, the maximum tensile stress of composite hydrogel (TCh/PB) is only 9.25 KPa, a very limit reinforcing effect. However, TCh/PB showed better self-healing efficiency (96.0 %) as well as ionic conductivity (1.25 × 10-5 S/m). The present work shows that the charge state of the nano-chitin exerts great influence on the interaction with the crosslinking agent borax, therefore, affects the structure and properties of the final PVA composite hydrogels. The results could provide important information about making full use of nano-chitin as a reinforcement by adjusting its surface charge state.

Abstract
Okara, as a by-product of soybean processing, is rich in insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), which is a carbohydrate polymer with various insoluble polysaccharides. Nowadays, the extraction of IDF with excellent functional properties has become a research hotspot. In this work, we further proposed an alternating alkali/ultrasound method for the efficient extraction of IDF. The sequential treatments of alkali (A-ISF), alkali-ultrasonic (AU-ISF), ultrasonic-alkali (UA-ISF), ultrasonic-alkali-ultrasonic (UAU-ISF) and alkali-ultrasonic-alkali (AUA-ISF) were applied to extract insoluble soybean fiber (ISF). FTIR and XRD results proved the typical structure of ISFs, and TGA results demonstrated the improved thermal stability of UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF. Chemical composition measurement showed that UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF exhibited higher cellulose content (>83 %). SEM results revealed that ultrasonic treatment led to a decomposition of okara matrix and significant porous structure in ISFs with an amplified collapse effect, resulting in an increase of the pore size of ISFs, and strengthening the properties of UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF in higher water (>15 g/g)/oil (>12 g/g) holding capacities, cholesterol binding capacity (>36 mg/g), and cation exchange capacity (>0.3 mmol/g), thus providing new insights for the preparation of ISF with high functional properties that are beneficial for human intestinal health.

Abstract
Chitin microspheres (CMs) have attracted increasing attention due to their biocompatibility, uniform size and shape, large surface area, and porous structure. Considerable research efforts have been focused on developing CMs and promoting their applications in various areas. In this context, this review aims to describe the most recent progress in the fabrication and application of CMs. Different routes that can be used to prepare CMs, such as the drip method and the emulsion method, are emphatically introduced. Moreover, the applications of CMs as drug delivery systems, wound dressings, three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds, water purification, and functional supporting materials in the fields of biomedicine, tissue engineering, environmental protection, and energy storage are also highlighted. We hope this review can provide a comprehensive and useful database for further innovation of CMs.

Abstract
A biopolymer-based formulation for robust and active food packaging material was developed. This material consisted of a blend of three biopolymers (guar gum-sodium alginate-i-carrageenan) reinforced by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) alongside the integration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with varying sizes. The CNC utilized in this process was derived from cloth waste lint (CWL) generated from a household cloth dryer machine. This CNC synthesis underwent a series of solvent treatments to yield the CNC used in the composite. CNC and AgNPs were incorporated into the tribiopolymeric blend matrix to construct a nanocomposite film that showed excellent tensile strength (∼90 MPa). The nanocomposite film also exhibited antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Bacillus cereus MTCC 1272. In this report, it was demonstrated that the zone of inhibition against E. coli and B. cereus depends on the variation of size and amount of AgNPs inside the polymeric matrix. The practical applicability of such a film was also demonstrated by applying it to sliced bread and the enhancement of the shelf life of the raped bread was compared with a control. Thus, the guar gum-sodium alginate-i-carrageenan tribiopolymer blend with a cloth waste lint extracted cellulose nanocrystal composite film is antimicrobial, hence, an excellent candidate as an active packaging film.

Abstract
Crustaceans and mollusks are widely consumed around the world due to their delicacy and nutritious value. During the processing, only 30-40 % of these shellfish are considered edible, while 70-60 % of portions are thrown away as waste or byproduct. These byproducts harbor valuable constituents, notably chitin. This chitin can be extracted from shellfish byproducts through chemical, microbial, enzymatic, and green technologies. However, chitin is insoluble in water and most of the organic solvents, hampering its wide application. Hence, chitin is de-acetylated into chitosan, which possesses various functional applications. Recently, nanotechnology has proven to improve the surface area and numerous functional properties of metals and molecules. Further, the nanotechnology principle can be extended to nanochitosan formation. Therefore, this review article centers on crustaceans and mollusks byproduct utilization for chitosan, its nano-formation, and their food industry applications. The extensive discussion has been focused on nanochitosan formation, characterization, and active site modification. Lastly, nanochitosan applications in various food industries, including biodegradable food packaging, fat replacer, bioactive compound carrier, and antimicrobial agent have been reported.

Abstract
This study aimed to enhance the rheological properties and thermal stability of acid-induced soy protein isolate (SPI) gels by incorporating chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) and proposing a gelation mechanism. SPI gels exhibited pseudo-plastic behavior. Increasing ChNCs concentration from 0.00 % to 1.00 % improved G' values, recovery rate, and initial degradation temperature: from 75.6 Pa to 1024.3 Pa, 80.27 % to 85.47 %, and 261.5 °C to 275.8 °C, respectively. FTIR analysis confirmed electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between SPI and ChNCs. Adding 1.00 % ChNCs reduced α-helix content from 19.7 % to 12.1 % while increasing β-sheet content from 46.5 % to 52.6 %. This led to protein unfolding, exposure of Trp residues, and orderly aggregation, forming a dense cross-linked gel network. Gel particle size increased from 185.5 nm (no ChNCs) to 504.4 nm (1.00 % ChNCs), with reduced surface charges. Hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were key forces stabilizing SPI-ChNCs gels. These findings offer a practical approach to enhancing traditional acid-induced protein gel-based functional foods using naturally sourced chitin nanocrystals.

Abstract
Novel hierarchical metal-organic framework/chitosan aerogel composites were developed for oil bleaching. UiO-66-COOH-type metal organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) were synthesized and integrated onto a chitosan matrix with different contents and named MOF-aerogel-1 and MOF-aerogel-2. Due to the compatibility of chitosan, the carboxylic zirconium MOF-aerogels not only maintained the inherent chemical accessibility of UiO-66-COOH, but the unique crystallization and structural characteristics of these MOF nanoparticles were also preserved. Through 3-dimensional reconstructed images, aggregation of the UiO-66-COOH particles was observed in MOF-aerogel-1, while the MOF was homogeneously distributed on the surface of the chitosan lamellae in MOF-aerogel-2. All aerogels, with or without immobilized MOF nanoparticles, were capable of removing carotenoids during oil bleaching. MOF-aerogel-2 showed the most satisfying removal proportions of 26.6%, 36.5%, and 47.2% at 50 °C, 75 °C, and 100 °C, respectively, and its performance was very similar to that of commercial activated clay. The reuse performance of MOF-aerogel-2 was tested, and the results showed its exceptional sustainability for carotenoid removal. These findings suggested the effectiveness of the MOFaerogel for potential utilization in oil bleaching treatments.

Abstract
Hydrogels based on natural polymers such as agarose usually show low applicability due to their weak mechanical properties. In this work, we developed a dual cross-linked agarose hydrogel by adding different amounts of TEMPO-oxidized nano-chitin (0-0.2 %) to agarose hydrogel matrices and then physically cross-linked under acidic gas-phase coagulation. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, and SEM. The effects of nano-chitin addition and acidic gas-phase coagulation on the properties of agarose hydrogels, such as gel strength, swelling degree, rheological properties, and methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity, were also studied. Structural characterizations confirmed that nano-chitin was successfully introduced into agarose hydrogels. The gel strength, storage modulus, and MB adsorption capacity of agarose hydrogels gradually increased with the increasing nano-chitin addition, whereas the swelling degree decreased. After acidic gas-phase coagulation, agarose/nano-chitin nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited improved gel strength and storage modulus, while the swelling degree and MB adsorption capacity were slightly reduced. The combination of oxidized nano-chitin and acidic gas-phase coagulation is expected to be an effective way to improve the properties of natural polymer hydrogels.
