β-Cyclodextrin network crosslinked by novel phosphonium-based tetrakiscarboxylic acid derived from PH3 tail gas: Synthesis and application for rapid removal of organic dyes from wastewater

High-capacity adsorption of organic dyes using separable pullulan gel encapsulated with PDA-modified ZIF-8

In this investigation, a hydrogel adsorbent featuring remarkable efficiency in dye adsorption was successfully synthesized by the integration of natural polysaccharide (pullulan) and nanoparticles (ZIF-8@PDA). The prepared natural polysaccharide nanocomposite hydrogels not only exhibit superior mechanical strength and biocompatibility, but also demonstrate adeptness in the removal of dye pollutants. The dye removal capacities were 615.4 mg/g for malachite green (MG) and 525.8 mg/g for Congo red (CR), respectively. Notably, the adsorption process exhibits minimal susceptibility to variations in water quality and the presence of co-existing ions. The pH-responsive surface charge conversion capability of the adsorbent renders it recyclable, maintaining a dye adsorption performance exceeding 88 % even after 5 cycles of repeated usage. Overall, these environmentally friendly natural polysaccharide nanocomposite hydrogels hold potential for addressing complex wastewater treatment challenges and long-term use.

Facile synthesis of lignin-based Fe-MOF for fast adsorption of methyl orange

To rapidly remove dyes from wastewater, iron-based metal-organic frameworks modified with phenolated lignin (NH2-MIL@L) were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. Analyses of the chemical structure and adsorption mechanism of the NH2-MIL@L proved the successful introduction of lignin and the enhancement of its adsorption sites. Compared with NH2-MIL-101-Fe without phenolated lignin, the modification with lignin increased the methyl orange (MO) adsorption rate of NH2-MIL@L. For the best adsorbent, NH2-MIL@L4, the MO adsorption efficiency in MO solution reached 95.09% within 5 min. NH2-MIL@L4 reached adsorption equilibrium within 90 min, exhibiting an MO adsorption capacity of 195.31 mg/g. The process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Dubinin-Radushkevich model. MO adsorption efficiency of NH2-MIL@L4 was maintained at 89.87% after six adsorption-desorption cycles. In mixed solutions of MO and methylene blue (MB), NH2-MIL@L4 achieved an MO adsorption of 94.02% at 5 min and reached MO adsorption equilibrium within 15 min with an MO adsorption capacity of 438.6 mg/g, while the MB adsorption equilibrium was established at 90 min with an MB adsorption rate and capacity of 95.60% and 481.34 mg/g, respectively. NH2-MIL@L4 sustained its excellent adsorption efficiency after six adsorption-desorption cycles (91.2% for MO and 93.4% for MB). The process of MO adsorption by NH2-MIL@L4 followed the Temkin model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, while MB adsorption followed the Dubinin-Radushkevich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and synergistic interactions affected the MO adsorption process of NH2-MIL@L4.

Adsorption of cationic/anionic dyes and endocrine disruptors by yeast/cyclodextrin polymer composites

Factory and natural wastewaters contain a wide range of organic pollutants. Therefore, multifunctional adsorbents must be developed that can purify wastewater. Phytic acid-cross-linked Baker's yeast cyclodextrin polymer composites (IBY-PA-CDP) were prepared using a one-pot method. IBY-PA-CDP was used to adsorb methylene blue (MB), bisphenol A (BPA), and methyl orange (MO). Studies on the ionic strength and strongly acidic ion salts confirmed that IBY-PA-CDP adsorbs MO through hydrophobic interactions. This also shows that Na+ was the direct cause of the increased MO removal. Adsorption studies on binary systems showed that MB/MO inhibited the adsorption of BPA by IBY-PA-CDP. The presence of MB increased the removal rate of MO by IBY-PA-CDP due to the bridging effect. The Langmuir isotherm model calculated the maximum adsorption capacities for MB and BPA to be 630.96 and 83.31 mg g-1, respectively. However, the Freundlich model is more suitable for fitting the experimental data for MO adsorption. To understand the rate-limiting stage of adsorption, a mass-transfer mechanism model was employed. The fitting results show that adsorption onto the active sites is the rate-determining step. After five regeneration cycles, IBY-PA-CDP could be reused with good stability and recyclability.

Upgraded β-cyclodextrin-based broad-spectrum adsorbents with enhanced antibacterial property for high-efficient dyeing wastewater remediation

The dyeing wastewater contains amounts of refractory organic compounds, and severely endangers the ecosystem and human health. To alleviate this problem, in this study, the low-cost broad-spectrum nano-adsorbent (denoted as CD/CA-g-CS) with strong antibacterial activity has been synthesized by chemical binding of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with chitosan (CS) and citric acid (CA) for high-efficient dyes scavenger. Taking advantage of the extraordinary water insolubility, porous nature and abundant surface groups, the synthesized CD/CA-g-CS outperforms the previously reported adsorbents in terms of adsorption performance. The CD/CA-g-CS exhibits ultrahigh adsorption capacities of 801.66, 770.50 and 946.66 mg/g, respectively mg/g for the cationic dyes of malachite green (MG), basic red (BR) and methylene blue (MB), respectively, while 389.64, 619.60 and 429.22 mg/g for the anionic dyes of acid blue (AB), acid red (AR) and acid yellow (AY), respectively. The chemical monolayer absorption is further demonstrated by the analysis based on the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. The regenerable CD/CA-g-CS not only performs well in one-step removal of the mixed dyes in the simulated sewage, but also exhibits superior performance in purifying real industrial wastewater. Moreover, CD/CA-g-CS endowed with antibacterial activity leads to an inhibition rate of over 99.99 % for E. coli. The newly developed CD/CA-g-CS adsorbents are highly promising for high-efficient dyeing wastewater remediation.

Facile fabrication of reusable starch sponge with adjustable crosslinked networks for efficient nest-trap and in situ photodegrade methylene blue

The fabrication of reusable natural polysaccharide sponges with nanoscale dispersed photocatalysts to achieve robust photocatalytic efficiency is desirable yet challenging. Herein, inspired by the nesting behavior when fishing, we designed reusable starch sponge with chemically anchored nano-ZnO into carboxylated starch matrix by thermoplastic interfacial reactions and solvent replacement for absorbing and photodegrading methylene blue (MB) in situ. The plasticization and interfacial reactions promoted a simultaneous increase in the reactivity of the starch hydroxyl/carboxyl groups and the specific surface area of ZnO. Meanwhile, the crosslinked networks of starch sponge could be adjusted by varying the ZnO and carboxylic groups contents. The results of photodegradation experiments revealed the recyclable closed-loop process of attraction-trapping-photodegradation of MB was successfully realized, achieving the effect of killing three birds with one stone. The reusable starch sponge with homogeneous dispersion of nano-ZnO by constructing three-dimensional porous channels possessed the high enrichment capacity and the remarkable photocatalysis efficiency with 150 mg/L ZnO. Under UV irradiation, the starch sponge degraded 97 % of MB with 1.67 × 10-3 min-1 photodegradation rate constant even after five cycles, which exceeded most existing photocatalytic systems. Overall, the reusable starch sponge with adjustable structure provided new insights for multifunctional bio-based photocatalyst loading systems.

Nanocellulose-based polyurethane foam adsorbent for pressure-driven dye-contaminated water purification

Dye-contaminated water has caused a worldwide pollution, which is threatening aquatic organisms and human health. In this work, a pressure-driven foam adsorbent (PFA) was bioinspired from the tapestry turban for purifying the dye-contaminated water. The PFA was prepared using an one-step method from nanocellulose (NC), amino-functionalized ZIF-8 (ZIF-8-NH2), and high resilience polyurethane foam (PUF). It was applied to efficiently remove methyl orange (MO) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from dye-contaminated waste solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of PFA for MO and CV was 225.9 mg/g (25 °C, pH = 2) and 41.6 mg/g (25 °C, pH = 10), respectively, which were acceptable as compared with the reported works. The dyes could be efficiently removed from various river water samples. After 5 cycles, the removal efficiencies of MO and CV decreased from 92.0% and 85.7% to 84.7% and 76.1%, respectively. Moreover, the PFA relied on pressure-driven force to release the purified water under a low pressure.
