Abstract
Cellulose with distinct colloidal states exhibited different adsorption capability for ions and whether the intake of cellulose would bring positive or negative influence on the mineral bioavailability is inconclusive. This work investigated the binding behavior of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated/nanocrystalline cellulose (TOCNF/TOCNC), and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with Ca2+and Zn2+ and compared their effects on mineral bioavailability in vitro and in vivo. The results suggested that CMC displayed a higher adsorption capability (36.6 mg g-1 for Ca2+ and 66.2 mg g-1 for Zn2+) than the other types of cellulose because of the strong interaction between carboxyl groups of cellulose and the ions. Although the cellulose derivatives had adverse effects on ion adsorption in vitro, the fermentability endowed by TOCNF/TOCNC counterbalanced the negative impacts in vivo. The findings suggested that the colloidal states of cellulose affected the bioavailability of minerals and could provide useful guidance for applications of specific cellulose.

Abstract
Novel superhydrophobic sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified polyurethane (MPU) was developed as the membrane material for controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) by cross-linking polymerization of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and CMC-based modified polyol (CMP) which was made by grafting CMC onto polyether polyol (TMN-450). The modified polyurethane coated fertilizer (MPUCF) was prepared by using MPU as the membrane material through a fluidized bed device. Analysis results of 13C NMR showed that the coatings of PUCF and MPUCF were prepared by connecting hydroxyl to isocyanate groups to form a carbamate. MPU had lower water absorption rates than PU, and MPUCF coating showed excellent hydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that MPUCF coating surface was much more smooth and flat than that of PUCF. Furthermore, the nitrogen (N) release longevity of MPUCF can increased to 140 days when the coating rate was 5%. It is concluded that MPU was an excellent superhydrophobic coating material for CRF.

Abstract
Adsorption of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in aqueous solution onto a titania nanoparticle film has been studied using in situ attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). CMC was adsorbed onto the positively charged titania surface in neutral, partially charged, and fully charged state. The response of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte layer was monitored upon changing the electrolyte pH and ionic strength. The degree of dissociation of the CMC increased upon adsorption onto the titania surface and changed with the surface coverage. Ionic strength change was observed to influence the degree of dissociation of the adsorbed CMC similar as when in solution. No significant peak shifts were observed in the spectrum of the adsorbed CMC during adsorption or in response to changing solution conditions; therefore, inner-sphere complexation between the carboxyl groups and the titania could not be confirmed. The effect of ion identity on the adsorption process was studied using soft and hard cations and mono- and divalent cations. The presence of a divalent counterion was observed to cause changes in the carboxymethyl vibrations, which can be related to formation of intra- or interchain linkages.

Abstract
The adsorption of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and the subsequent effect on bubble-surface interactions, has been studied for a graphite surface. CMC adsorbs on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) in specific patterns: when adsorbed from a solution of low concentration it forms stretched, isolated and sparsely distributed chains, while upon adsorption from a solution of higher concentration, it forms an interconnected network of multilayer features. The amount and topography of the adsorbed CMC affect the electrical properties as well as the wettability of the polymer-modified HOPG surface. Adsorption of CMC onto the HOPG surface causes the zeta potential to be more negative and the modified surface becomes more hydrophilic. This increase in both the absolute value of zeta potential and the surface hydrophilicity originates from the carboxymethyl groups of the CMC polymer. The effect of the adsorbed polymer layer on wetting film drainage and bubble-surface/particle attachment was determined using high speed video microscopy to monitor single bubble-surface collision, and single bubble Hallimond tube flotation experiments. The time of wetting film drainage and the time of three-phase contact line spreading gets significantly longer for polymer-modified HOPG surfaces, indicating that the film rupture and three-phase contact line expansion were inhibited by the presence of polymer. The effect of longer drainage times and slower dewetting correlated with reduced flotation recovery. The molecular kinetic (MK) model was used to quantify the effect of the polymer on dewetting dynamics, and showed an increase in the jump frequency for the polymer adsorbed at the higher concentration.

Abstract
It is important to know the detailed DNA structure on carbonaceous surfaces for further application of DNA-functionalized carbonaceous materials in diverse research areas. In this study, the topographic and structural characteristics of the separated single DNA molecules and their assembly on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces have been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM results indicate that both circular and linear DNA molecules tend to form hexagonal patterns along with some unusual structures that include node, protrusion, cruciform, parallel single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and compact zigzag. Furthermore, parallel ssDNA patterns and their crossed structures have been obtained under high-temperature conditions. Our AFM results reveal that a bare HOPG surface can induce DNA molecules to form various unusual structures. This finding is helpful for understanding the adsorption behavior of DNA on other carbonaceous surfaces such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. In addition, the hexagonal DNA patterns in this study are similar to those formed on the alkylamine-modified HOPG surface, which implies that a bare HOPG, without any chemical modification, has a strong ability to align biomolecules. This study could expand our knowledge of the diversities of DNA structures and the aligning ability of carbonaceous surfaces.

Abstract
Starches and gums are hydrocolloids frequently used in food systems to provide proper texture, moisture, and water mobility. Starch-gum interaction in food systems can change the starch granule swelling and its gelatinization and rheological properties. In this study, the effect of the addition of xanthan gum (XG), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC), and carrageenan (CAR) at the concentrations of the 0.15, 0.25, 0.35 and 0.45% (w/v) on the pasting, thermal, and rheological properties of cassava starch was studied. The swelling power (SP) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the starch gels were also evaluated. The results obtained showed that xanthan gum (XG) had a strong interaction with the cassava starch penetrating between starch granules causing increase in pasting viscosities, SP, storage and loss (G', and G", respectively) modulus and reduction in the setback of the starch; sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) greatly increased the pasting viscosities, the SP, and the storage and loss (G', and G", respectively) modulus of the starch-mixtures, mainly due to its greater capacity to hold water and not due to the interaction with cassava starch. Carrageenan (CAR) did not change any of the starch properties since there was no interaction between this gum and cassava starch at the concentrations used.

Abstract
Adsorption of circular DNA onto bare highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces by the addition of Mg²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cu²⁺ has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM results revealed that the topography and height of DNA on HOPG surface by the addition of different metal ions are quite different. After the addition of Mg²⁺ for incubation, DNA molecules tend to form many loops on HOPG surfaces, which are derived from the crossover of intramolecular and intermolecular chains. After the addition of Ni²⁺, DNA molecules can form network on HOPG surfaces, and the density of DNA network was significantly increased with increasing DNA concentration. Consequently, dense DNA network can be obtained by using relatively low concentration of DNA and Ni²⁺. As for the addition of Cu²⁺, angular DNA loops composed of flat chains were observed. The observed flat DNA chains with an average height of 0.52 nm can be ascribed to Cu²⁺ insert into the site between bases and phosphate group of DNA inducing denaturation of DNA molecules. This study is very helpful for understanding the interactions of metal ions and DNA molecules, and for constructing various DNA structures on the carbonaceous surfaces.

Abstract
Among natural polymers, starch is one of the most promising biodegradable materials because it is a renewable bioresource that is universally available and of low cost. However, the properties of starch-based materials are not satisfactory. One approach is the use of nano-filler as reinforcement for starch-based materials. In this paper, a nanocomposite is prepared using ZnO nanoparticles stabilized by carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) as the filler in glycerol plasticized-pea starch (GPS) matrix by the casting process. According to the characterization of ZnO-CMC particles with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG), ZnO (about 60 wt%) is encapsulated with CMC (about 40 wt%) in ZnO-CMC particles with the size of about 30-40 nm. A low loading of ZnO-CMC particles can obviously improve the pasting viscosity, storage modulus, the glass transition temperature and UV absorbance of GPS/ZnO-CMC nanocomposites. When the ZnO-CMC contents vary from 0 to 5 wt%, the tensile yield strength increase from 3.94 MPa to 9.81 MPa, while the elongation at break reduce from 42.2% to 25.8%. The water vapor permeability decrease from 4.76 x 10(-10) to 1.65 x 10(-10) g m(-1) s(-1) Pa(-1).

Abstract
Individual cellulose macromolecules were successfully visualized on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface by tapping-mode atomic force microscopy under ambient condition. Monomolecular-level dispersion of cellulose chains was achieved through the momentary contact of dilute cellulose/cupri-ethylenediamine (Cu-ED) solution onto the HOPG substrate. Both concentrations of cellulose and Cu-ED provided critical impacts on the topographical images. Single cellulose chains with molecular height of ca. 0.55 nm could be observed under the optimal conditions, showing rigid molecular rods with a unique morphology of hexagonal regularity. It was strongly suggested that the cellulose chains were aligned along the HOPG crystal lattice through a specific attraction, possibly due to a CH-pi interaction between the axial plane of cellulose and the HOPG pi-conjugated system. These phenomena would imply the potential applications of an HOPG substrate for not only nano-level imaging, but also for molecular alignment of cellulose and other structural polysaccharides.
