Abstract
The prebiotic generation of sugars in the context of origins of life studies is of considerable interest. Among the important intramolecular processes of sugars are carbonyl migrations and accompanying epimerizations. Herein we describe the carbonyl migration-epimerization process occurring down the entire carbon chain of chirally pure d-tetroses sugars under mild conditions. Employing chirally pure 1-13 C-erythrose, 4-13 C-erythrose and 1-13 C-threose, we (1) identify all the species formed as the carbonyl migrates down the four-carbon chain and (2) assess the rates associated with the production of each of these species. Competing aldol reactions and oxidative fragmentation processes were also observed. Further observations of self-condensation of glycolaldehyde mainly yielding 2-keto-hexoses (sorbose and tagatose) and tetrulose also provides a basis for understanding the effect of carbonyl migrations on the product distribution in plausible prebiotic scenarios.

Abstract
N-(α-d-Glucofuranurono-6,3-lactone)-p-nitroaniline and N-(methyl β-d-glucopyranuronate)-p-nitroaniline were obtained as crystalline solids. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR data and DFT calculations for N-(α-d-glucofuranurono-6,3-lactone)-p-nitroaniline indicate that this N-furanoside adopts a 3T2/3E-like conformation in the crystal lattice, solution and gas phase. Thus, the structure of recorded for N-furanoside 1H NMR spectrum is indicative of the 3T2/3E region of the pseudorotational itinerary for furanose derivatives with α-d-gluco, β-L-ido and α-d-xylo configurations. Moreover, it is concluded that the 1T2/E2/3T2/3E region of the pseudorotational itinerary for furanose derivatives with d-gluco, L-ido and d-xylo configurations should be characterised by the lack of coupling between H2 and H3 protons, irrespective of the anomeric configuration. Such a lack of vicinal coupling is characteristic for some of the trans-oriented furanose ring protons. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR data for N-(methyl β-d-glucopyranuronate)-p-nitroaniline indicate that this N-glucuronide adopts the 4C1 conformation, both in the crystal lattice and solution. The occurrence of anomeric effects in the presented N-glycosides is discussed. The crystal structure analysis of both N-glycosides gives evidence that the amine group in p-nitroaniline is planar due to the nitrogen sp2 hybridisation.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive benchmark computational study which has explored a complete path of the anomerization reaction of bare d-erythrose involving a pair of the low-energy α- and β-furanose anomers, the former of which was observed spectroscopically (Cabezas et al., Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 10826). We find that the ring opening of the α-anomer yields the most stable open-chain tautomer which step is followed by the rotational interconversion of the open-chain rotamers and final ring closing to form the β-anomer. Our results indicate the flatness of the reaction's potential energy surface (PES) corresponding to the rotational interconversion path and its sensitivity to the computational level. By using the explicitly correlated coupled cluster CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12 energies, we determine the free energy barrier for the α-furanose ring-opening (rate-determining) step as 170.3 kJ/mol. The question of the number of water molecules (n) needed for optimal stabilization of the erythrose anomerization reaction rate-determining transition state is addressed by a systematic exploration of the PES of the ring opening in the α-anomer-(H2 O)n and various β-anomer-(H2 O)n (n = 1-3) clusters using density functional and CCSD(T)-F12 computations. These computations suggest the lowest free energy barrier of the ring opening for doubly hydrated α-anomer, achieved by a mechanism that involves water-mediated multiple proton transfer coupled with the furanose CO bond breakage. Among the methods used, the G4 performed best against the CCSD(T)-F12 reference at estimating the ring-opening barrier heights for both the hydrated and bare erythrose conformers. Our results for the hydrated species are most relevant to an experimental study of the anomerization reaction of d-erythrose to be carried out in microsolvation environment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The conformational flexibility of carbohydrates is challenging within the field of computational chemistry. This flexibility causes the electron density to change, which leads to fluctuating atomic multipole moments. Quantum Chemical Topology (QCT) allows for the partitioning of an "atom in a molecule," thus localizing electron density to finite atomic domains, which permits the unambiguous evaluation of atomic multipole moments. By selecting an ensemble of physically realistic conformers of a chemical system, one evaluates the various multipole moments at defined points in configuration space. The subsequent implementation of the machine learning method kriging delivers the evaluation of an analytical function, which smoothly interpolates between these points. This allows for the prediction of atomic multipole moments at new points in conformational space, not trained for but within prediction range. In this work, we demonstrate that the carbohydrates erythrose and threose are amenable to the above methodology. We investigate how kriging models respond when the training ensemble incorporating multiple energy minima and their environment in conformational space. Additionally, we evaluate the gains in predictive capacity of our models as the size of the training ensemble increases. We believe this approach to be entirely novel within the field of carbohydrates. For a modest training set size of 600, more than 90% of the external test configurations have an error in the total (predicted) electrostatic energy (relative to ab initio) of maximum 1 kJ mol(-1) for open chains and just over 90% an error of maximum 4 kJ mol(-1) for rings.

Abstract
When lactose was incubated with G794A-β-galactosidase (a variant with a "closed" active site loop that binds transition state analogs well) an allolactose was trapped with its Gal moiety in a (4)H3 conformation, similar to the oxocarbenium ion-like conformation expected of the transition state. The numerous interactions formed between the (4)H3 structure and β-galactosidase indicate that this structure is representative of the transition state. This conformation is also very similar to that of d-galactono-1,5-lactone, a good transition state analog. Evidence indicates that substrates take up the (4)H3 conformation during migration from the shallow to the deep mode. Steric forces utilizing His418 and other residues are important for positioning the O1 leaving group into a quasi-axial position. An electrostatic interaction between the O5 of the distorted Gal and Tyr503 as well as C-H-π bonds with Trp568 are also significant. Computational studies of the energy of sugar ring distortion show that the β-galactosidase reaction itinerary is driven by energetic considerations in utilization of a (4)H3 transition state with a novel (4)C1-(4)H3-(4)C1 conformation itinerary. To our knowledge, this is the first X-ray crystallographic structural demonstration that the transition state of a natural substrate of a glycosidase has a (4)H3 conformation.

Abstract
A theoretical study of the minima and connecting transition states of the neutral complexes formed by alkaline-metal and alkaline-earth-metal derivatives of imidazolate and benzimidazolate anions has been carried out using B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2p), and G3B3 methods. Two and three nondegenerated minima and two and four TS structures have been identified for imidazole and benzimidazole derivatives, respectively. The most stable minima of the alkaline-metal derivatives of both systems correspond to the metal interacting with the imidazole ring, whereas in the alkaline-earth-metal derivatives, the preferred minima depend on the substituent. A remarkable feature of some minima is the fact that some of the metal-aromatic interactions follow the classical π-cation pattern, even though the global structure corresponds to a neutral salt, constituting a class of noncovalent interaction of great interest in the chemistry of aromatic and heterocyclic complexes. A CSD search has confirmed that the two bonding modes, N-σ and π, are present in the solid phase. The π mode has been analyzed by comparison with other azoles.

Abstract
Sugars of extraterrestrial origin have been observed in the interstellar medium (ISM), in at least one comet spectrum, and in several carbonaceous chondritic meteorites that have been recovered from the surface of the Earth. The origins of these sugars within the meteorites have been debated. To explore the possibility that sugars could be generated during shock events, this paper reports on the results of the first laboratory impact experiments wherein glycolaldehyde, found in the ISM, as well as glycolaldehyde mixed with montmorillonite clay, have been subjected to reverberated shocks from ~5 to >25 GPa. New biologically relevant molecules, including threose, erythrose and ethylene glycol, were identified in the resulting samples. These results show that sugar molecules can not only survive but also become more complex during impact delivery to planetary bodies.

Abstract
This work targets the structural preferences of D-ribose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose in water solution and solid phase. A theoretical DFT (B3LYP and M06-2X) and MP2 study has been undertaken considering the five possible configurations (open-chain, α-furanose, β-furanose, α-pyranose, and β-pyranose) of these two carbohydrates with a comparison of the solvent treatment using only a continuum solvation model (PCM) and the PCM plus one explicit water molecule. In addition, experimental vibrational studies using both nonchiroptical (IR-Raman) and chiroptical (VCD) techniques have been carried out. The theoretical and experimental results show that α- and β-pyranose forms are the dominant configurations for both compounds. Moreover, it has been found that 2-deoxy-D-ribose presents a non-negligible percentage of open-chain forms in aqueous solution, while in solid phase this configuration is absent.
