Abstract
Zeolites have ordered pore structures, good spatial constraints, and superior hydrothermal stability. In addition, the active metal elements inside and outside the zeolite framework provide the porous material with adjustable acid–base property and good redox performance. Thus, zeolites-based catalysts are more and more widely used in chemical industries. Combining the advantages of zeolites and active metal components, the zeolites-based materials are used to catalyze the oxidation of methane to produce various products, such as carbon dioxide, methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, acetic acid, and etc. This multifunction, high selectivity, and good activity are the key factors that enable the zeolites-based catalysts to be used for methane activation and conversion. In this review article, we briefly introduce and discuss the effect of zeolite materials on the activation of C–H bonds in methane and the reaction mechanisms of complete methane oxidation and selective methane oxidation. Pd/zeolite is used for the complete oxidation of methane to carbon dioxide and water, and Fe- and Cu-zeolite catalysts are used for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, and etc. The prospects and challenges of zeolite-based catalysts in the future research work and practical applications are also envisioned. We hope that the outcome of this review can stimulate more researchers to develop more effective zeolite-based catalysts for the complete or selective oxidation of methane.

Abstract
Structural and chemical transformations of ultrathin oxide films on transition metals lie at the heart of many complex phenomena in heterogeneous catalysis, such as the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). However, there is limited atomic-scale understanding of these transformations, especially for irreducible oxides such as ZnO. Here, by combining density functional theory calculations and surface science techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction, we investigated the interfacial interaction of well-defined ultrathin ZnOxHy films on Pd(111) under varying gas-phase conditions [ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), 5 × 10-7 mbar of O2, and a D2/O2 mixture] to shed light on the SMSI effect of irreducible oxides. Sequential treatment of submonolayer zinc oxide films in a D2/O2 mixture (1:4) at 550 K evoked reversible structural transformations from a bilayer to a monolayer and further to a Pd-Zn near-surface alloy, demonstrating that zinc oxide, as an irreducible oxide, can spread on metal surfaces and show an SMSI-like behavior in the presence of hydrogen. A mixed canonical-grand canonical phase diagram was developed to bridge the gap between UHV conditions and true SMSI environments, revealing that, in addition to surface alloy formation, certain ZnOxHy films with stoichiometries that do not exist in bulk are stabilized by Pd in the presence of hydrogen. Based on the combined theoretical and experimental observations, we propose that SMSI metal nanoparticle encapsulation for irreducible oxide supports such as ZnO involves both surface (hydroxy)oxide and surface alloy formation, depending on the environmental conditions.

Abstract
Increasing the use of natural gas engines is an important step to reduce the carbon footprint of mobility and power generation sectors. To avoid emissions of unburnt methane and the associated severe greenhouse effect of lean-burn engines, the stability of methane oxidation catalysts against steam-induced sintering at low temperatures (<500 °C) needs to be improved. Here we demonstrate how the combination of catalyst development and improved process control yields a highly efficient solution for complete methane oxidation. We design a material based on palladium and hierarchical zeolite with fully sodium-exchanged acid sites, which improves the support stability and prevents steam-induced palladium sintering under reaction conditions by confining the metal within the zeolite. Repeated short reducing pulses enable the use of a highly active transient state of the catalyst, which in combination with its high stability provides excellent performance without deactivation for over 90 h in the presence of steam.

Abstract
Advances in scanning probe microscopies (SPM) have allowed the mechanisms and rates of adsorption, diffusion and reactions on surfaces to be characterized by directly observing the motions of the individual atoms and molecules involved. The importance of oxides as thermal and photocatalysts, chemical sensors, and substrates for epitaxial growth has motivated dynamical SPM studies of oxide surfaces and their formation. Work on the TiO(2) (110) surface is reviewed as an example of how dynamic SPM studies have revealed unexpected interactions between adsorbates and defects that influence macroscopic reaction rates. Studies following diffusion, adsorption and phase transitions on bulk and surface oxides are also discussed. A perspective is provided on advanced SPM techniques that hold great promise for yielding new insights into the mechanisms and rates of elemental processes that take place either during oxidation or on oxide surfaces, with particular emphasis on methods that extend the time and chemical resolution of dynamical SPM measurements.
