Synthesis and characterization of nickel ferrite nanocatalysts for CO2 decomposition

Development of bactericidal spinel ferrite nanoparticles with effective biocompatibility for potential wound healing applications

The current study was devised to explore the antibacterial activity and underlying mechanism of spinel ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) along with their biocompatibility and wound healing potentials. In this regard, nickel ferrite and zinc/nickel ferrite NPs were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The biocompatibility of the synthesized NPs with human dermal fibroblast (HDF) and red blood cells (RBCs) was assessed. The biocompatible concentrations of the NPs were used to investigate the antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The mode of bactericidal action was also explored. In vitro scratch assay was performed to evaluate the wound healing potential of NPs. The SEM-EDX analysis showed that the average particles size of nickel ferrite and zinc/nickel ferrite were 49 and 46 nm, respectively, with appropriate elemental composition and homogenous distribution. The XRD pattern showed all the characteristic diffraction peaks of spinel ferrite NPs, which confirmed the synthesis of the pure phase cubic spinel structure. The biocompatible concentration of nickel ferrite and zinc/nickel ferrite NPs was found to be 250 and 125 μg ml-1, respectively. Both the NPs showed inhibition against all the selected strains in the concentration range of 50 to 1000 μg ml-1. Studies on the underlying antimicrobial mechanism revealed damage to the cell membrane, protein leakage, and intracellular reactive oxygen species production. The in vitro scratch assay confirmed the migration and proliferation of fibroblast with artificial wound shrinkage. This study shows that nickel ferrite and zinc/nickel ferrite NPs could be a strong candidate for antibacterial and wound healing nano-drugs.

Magnetically retrievable ferrite nanoparticles in the catalysis application

In the present review, we summarized the applications of magnetic spinel ferrite nanoparticles as catalysts in organic reactions and transformations. Catalytic applications are comprised of using mostly cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc ferrites, along with their mixed-metal combinations based on nano ferrites. The spinel ferrites (SFs) are gained principally by wet-chemical, sol-gel or co-precipitation methods, more infrequently by the mechanical high-energy ball milling, spark plasma sintering, sonochemical technique, microwave heating or hydrothermal route. Catalytic processes with the application of ferrite nanoparticles are included decomposition (in particular photocatalytic), reactions of dehydrogenation, oxidation, alkylation, CC coupling, removing organic/inorganic contaminants from aqueous solutions. As significant and remarkable advantages, ferrite nanocatalysts not only are environmentally benign and compatible with green chemistry aspects but also can be simply recovered from reaction systems and recycled up to several times almost without significant loss of their catalytic activity.

Utilization of Zn-containing electric arc furnace dust for multi-metal doped ferrite with enhanced magnetic property: From hazardous solid waste to green product

One-step solid state reaction method was proposed for the first time to realize the transformation of the Zn-containing EAFD from hazardous solid waste to multi-metal doped ferrite with enhanced magnetic property. The effect of Zn-containing EAFD to NiCl₂·6H₂O mass ratio (R_ZE/N, g·g^-1) on the phases transformation was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The as-synthesized samples were treated by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). It is shown that the TCPL played a key role in determining both the purity and toxicity of the obtained ferrites. The pure metal doped Ni-Zn ferrite with higher saturation magnetization (Ms, 56.8 emu·g^-1) and lower coercivity (Hc, 58.5Oe) was gained under the optimum conditions. And the pure ferrite was a green product according to the TCLP and EN12457 standards. Moreover, the evaluation of environmental impact and the recovery ratio of the dust were also discussed.

Origin of magnetocapacitance in chemically homogeneous and inhomogeneous ferrites

The present work mainly focuses on the magnetodielectric (MD) effect in polycrystalline Ni0.9-yCuyZn0.1Fe1.98O3.97 (y = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) ferrite synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. Sintered samples showed the formation of CuO-rich grain boundary segregation for y≥ 0.2. The appearance of segregation made the present material chemically inhomogeneous and electrically heterogeneous. A negative MD response was observed in homogeneous ferrite for y = 0 and 0.1 due to lattice distortion (an intrinsic effect), whereas a positive MD response occurs in chemically inhomogeneous segregated ferrite (y≥ 0.2) due the collective effects of Maxwell-Wagner (MW) polarization with intrinsic magnetoresistance (an extrinsic effect).
