Abstract
The electronic organization of Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) allows them to activate strong bonds in mechanisms that are usually free of redox events at the Lewis acidic site. The unique 6d/5f manifold of uranium could serve as an interesting FLP acceptor site, but to date FLP-like catalysis with actinide ions is unknown. In this paper, the catalytic, FLP-like hydrogenation reactivity of trivalent uranium complexes is explored in the presence of base-stabilized silylenes. Comparison to isoelectronic, isostructural lanthanide and thorium complexes lends insight into the electronic factors governing dihydrogen activation. Mechanistic studies of the uranium- and lanthanide-catalyzed hydrogenations are presented, including discussion of likely intermediates. Computational modeling of the f-element complexes, combined with experimental comparison to p-block Lewis acids, elucidates the relevance of steric hindrance to productive reactivity with dihydrogen. Consideration of the complete experimental and theoretical evidence provides a clear picture of the electronic and steric factors governing dihydrogen activation by these FLPs.

Abstract
Bifunctional transition metal complexes are of particular interest in metal-ligand cooperative activation of small molecules. As a novel type of bifunctional catalyst, Lewis acid transition metal (LA-TM) complexes have attracted increasing interest in hydrogen activation and storage. To advance the catalyst design, herein the metal effect of LA-TM complexes on the hydrogen activation has been systematically studied with a series of tris(phosphino)borane (TPB) complexes with V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni as metal centers. The metal effect not only influences the mechanism of hydrogen activation, but also notably casts a volcano plot for the activity. TPB complexes of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co tend to activate H2 through a stepwise mechanism, while TPB-Ni prefers a synergetic mechanism for H2 activation. More importantly, the metal effect significantly influences the activity of H2 activation and the formation of the LA-H-TM bridging hydride. The trend of changes in the LA-H-TM structures, the second-order perturbation stabilization energies, and the Laplacian bond orders, along with different metals (from V to Ni), are all interestingly constitute volcano plots for the performance of TPB-TM complexes catalyzed H2 activation. TPB-Mn and TPB-Fe are found to be the optimal catalysts among the discussed TPB-TM complexes. The volcano plots disclosed for the metal effects should be informative and instructive for homogeneous and heterogeneous LA-TM catalysts development.

Abstract
In this work, using DFT calculations, we investigated Lewis acidities of carbon (in activated carbonyl group) in comparison to the B(C6 F5 )3 in combination with dioxane as the Lewis base (LB) for metal-free catalysis of heterolytic H2 splitting and hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds. We found that in case of carbon as the Lewis acid (LA) the reaction is controlled by frontier molecular orbital interactions between the H2 and LA-LB fragments at shorter distances. The steric effects can be reduced by electrophilic substitutions on the carbonyl carbon. Synergic combination between stronger orbital interactions and reduced steric effects can lower the barrier of the H2 splitting below 10 kcal/mol. With the B(C6 F5 )3 , the H2 splitting is controlled by electrostatic interactions, which cause to form an early transition state. An advantage of employing Lewis acidity of the activated carbonyl carbon for hydrogenation is that the hydride-type attack and hydrogenation of the C=O bond occur in a single step throughout H2 splitting. Hence, stronger Lewis acidity of the C(C=O) reinforces hydrogenation without prohibition of the hydride delivery.

Abstract
The insertion of CO into hydrogenated boron-amidine 1 yielding five-membered diazaborolone (5DAB) 3 has been studied within the molecular electron density theory (MEDT) at the DFT ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level. This is a domino process comprised of two consecutive reactions: (i) the dehydrogenation of 1 yielding the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) boron-amidine 4, which quickly equilibrates with four-membered diazaborolone (4DAB) 2; and (ii) the addition of CO into FLP 4, yielding the final 5DAB 3. Analysis of the Gibbs free energies indicates that the extrusion of H2 demands a high ΔG≠ of 28.6 kcal·mol-1, being endergonic by 6.7 kcal·mol-1. The subsequent addition of CO into FLP 4 presents a low ΔG≠ of 15.0 kcal·mol-1; formation of 5DAB 3 being exergonic by -5.7 kcal·mol-1 from hydrogenated boron-amidine 1. An analysis of the bonding changes along the insertion of CO in a smaller FLP model indicates that this reaction can be considered a [4 + 1] cycloaddition reaction taking place via a five-membered pseudocyclic transition state associated with a two-stage one-step mechanism. Analysis of the conceptual DFT reactivity indices suggests that the initial attack of CO on FLP 4 is an acid/base process in which the carbenoid carbonyl character allows CO to participate as a Lewis base, rather than a nucleophilic/electrophilic interaction. The results arising from the analysis of the Parr functions, however, coincide with this behaviour.

Abstract
A new six-membered cyclic frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pair was liberated from its HB(C6 F5 )2 adduct by treatment with vinylcyclohexane. The system is an active frustrated Lewis pair that undergoes cycloaddition reactions with suitable π reagents and it splits dihydrogen. At room temperature in solution the new compound is a monomer, however, in the crystal and in solution at low temperature it aggregates to a thermodynamically favoured supramolecular macrocyclic cyclooctamer.

Abstract
Given the growing demand for green and sustainable chemical processes, the catalytic reductive alkylation of amines with main-group catalysts of low toxicity and molecular hydrogen as the reductant would be an ideal method to functionalize amines. However, such a process remains challenging. Herein, a novel reductive alkylation system using H2 is presented, which proceeds via a tandem reaction that involves the B(2,6-Cl2C6H3)( p-HC6F4)2-catalyzed formation of an imine and the subsequent hydrogenation of this imine catalyzed by a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP). This reductive alkylation reaction generates H2O as the sole byproduct and directly functionalizes amines that bear a remarkably wide range of substituents including carboxyl, hydroxyl, additional amino, primary amide, and primary sulfonamide groups. The synthesis of isoindolinones and aminophthalic anhydrides has also been achieved by a one-pot process that consists of a combination of the present reductive alkylation with an intramolecular amidation and intramolecular dehydration reactions, respectively. The reaction showed a zeroth-order and a first-order dependence on the concentration of an imine intermediate and B(2,6-Cl2C6H3)( p-HC6F4)2, respectively. In addition, the reaction progress was significantly affected by the concentration of H2. These results suggest a possible mechanism in which the heterolysis of H2 is facilitated by the FLP comprising THF and B(2,6-Cl2C6H3)( p-HC6F4)2.

Abstract
We investigate the geometry of oxonium/borohydride ion pairs [ether-H(+)-ether][LA-H(-)] with dioxane, THF, and Et2O as ethers and B(C6F5)3 as the Lewis acid (LA). The question is about possible location of the disolvated proton, [ether-H(+)-ether], with respect to the hydride of the structurally complex [LA-H(-)] anion. Using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics and a comparison of the potential and free energies of the optimized configurations, we show that herein considered ion pairs are much more flexible geometrically than previously thought. Conformers with different locations of cations with respect to anions are governed by a flat energy-landscape. We found a novel configuration in which oxonium is below [LA-H(-)], with respect to the direction of borane → hydride vector, and the proton-hydride distance is ca. 6 Å. With calculations of the vibrational spectra of [ether-H(+)-ether][(C6F5)3B-H(-)] for dioxane, THF, and Et2O as ethers, we investigate the manifestation of SSLB-type (short, strong, low-barrier) hydrogen bonding in the OHO motif of an oxonium cation.

Abstract
Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are the combination of Lewis acid and base motifs where steric hindrance prevents strong adduct formation. Accordingly, the ability of FLPs in small molecule activation and their capability in hydrogen cleavage led to their use in the hydrogenation of a wide range of unsaturated substrates. Here, we investigated theoretically the ability of three intramolecular phosphorus/boron FLPs as bifunctional catalysts in the metal-free hydrogenation of dimethylacetylene to cis-alkene. The mechanism of this hydrogenation reaction, based on the boron acceptor [including –OR substituents (B(OR)2), where R is an aliphatic or aromatic branch] and phosphorus donor, has been explored. Based on the results obtained, it was confirmed that the H2 splitting reaction and the formation of the phosphonium–borohydride motifs for these FLPs are endothermic. It has been shown that these FLPs have a moderate ability in H–H bond splitting. Also, the capability of the boron atom in FLPs on the hydrogenation reaction was investigated. The reduction steps of the mechanism showed an exothermic nature. This result revealed that the presence of the boron as a Lewis acid, with a very limited Lewis acidity, improves the catalytic hydrogenation reaction significantly. Finally, it was confirmed that the proposed FLPs in the cis-hydrogenation of alkynes will be effective.

Abstract
The revelation that combinations of Lewis acids and bases for which dative bonding is impeded can activate dihydrogen led to the concept of "frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs). Over the past decade, a range of FLP systems and substrate molecules have precipitated a paradigm change in main-group chemistry and metal-free catalysis. The FLP motif has also found application in a growing body of chemical problems in organic synthesis, transition metal and free radical chemistry, materials, enzymatic models, and surface chemistry. The current state of FLP chemistry is assessed herein, and the outlook for the future considered.

Abstract
Frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)-catalyzed reduction of Michael acceptors is a challenging reaction that proceeds with specific FLP structures. Kinetics and equilibrium of the reactions of two phosphines (Ar3P), namely tri(1-naphthyl)phosphine and tri(o-tolyl)phosphine, are reported with reference electrophiles. The reason for the failure of the FLPs (Ar3P/B(C6F5)3) to reduce activated alkenes under H2 pressure is shown to be a hydrophosphination process that inhibits the reduction reaction. Kinetic and thermodynamic factors controlling both pathways are discussed in light of Mayr's free linear energy relationships.

Abstract
The energy profile of a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) dihydrogen splitting system was determined by a combined experimental kinetic and DFT study. A trimethylene-bridged phosphane-borane FLP was converted into its endothermic H2 -cleavage product by sequential H(+) /H(-) addition. The system could be handled at low temperature, and the kinetics of the H2 elimination were determined to give a rate constant of kHH,exp (299 K)=(2.87±0.1)×10(-4) s(-1) in solution. The primary kinetic isotope effects were determined; for example, (kHH /kDD )exp =3.19. The system was accurately analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The autoinduced, frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)-catalyzed hydrogenation of 16-benzene-ring substituted N-benzylidene-tert-butylamines with B(2,6-F2 C6 H3 )3 and molecular hydrogen was investigated by kinetic analysis. The pKa values for imines and for the corresponding amines were determined by quantum-mechanical methods and provided a direct proportional relationship. The correlation of the two rate constants k1 (simple catalytic cycle) and k2 (autoinduced catalytic cycle) with pKa difference between imine and amine pairs (ΔpKa ) or Hammett's σ parameter served as useful parameters to establish a structure-reactivity relationship for the FLP-catalyzed hydrogenation of imines.

Abstract
The phosphorus/boron-substituted hexatriene systems 6 undergo thermally induced electrocyclic ring closure to yield the cyclohexadiene-derived P/B frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) 7. Subsequent TEMPO oxidation gives the phenylene-bridged FLPs 8. Both systems activate dihydrogen and the thermally robust FLPs undergo carbon-carbon coupling reactions at a mesityl group upon treatment with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate at elevated temperatures.

Abstract
The methyl labelled C3 -bridged frustrated phosphane borane Lewis pair (P/B FLP) 2 b was prepared by treatment of Mes2 PCl with a methallyl Grignard reagent followed by anti-Markovnikov hydroboration with Piers' borane [HB(C6 F5 )2 )]. The FLP 2 b is inactive toward dihydrogen under typical ambient conditions, in contrast to the C2 - and C4 -bridged FLP analogues. Dynamic NMR spectroscopy showed that this was not due to kinetically hindered P⋅⋅⋅B dissociation of 2 b. DFT calculations showed that the hydrogen-splitting reaction of the parent compound 2 a is markedly endergonic. The PH(+) /BH(-) H2 -splitting product of 2 b was indirectly synthesized by a sequence of H(+) /H(-) addition. It lost H2 at ambient conditions and confirmed the result of the DFT analysis.

Abstract
A computational and conceptual density functional theory (DFT) study on the mechanism of molecular hydrogen activation by a set of three frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) was performed at the ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. A reduced model and other two prototypes derived from experimental data, based on the donor nitrogen and acceptor boron atoms, were used. Analysis based on the energy results, geometries and the global electron density transfer at the TSs made it possible to obtain some interesting conclusions: (i) despite the well-known very low reactivity of molecular hydrogen, the catalytic effectiveness of the three FLPs produces reactions with almost unappreciable activation energies; (ii) the reactions, being exothermic, follow a one-step mechanism via polarised TSs; (iii) there are neither substituent effects on the kinetics nor on the thermodynamics of these reactions; (iv) the activation of molecular hydrogen seems to be attained when the N-B distance in the FLP derivatives is around 2.74 Å; and (v) the proposed FLP model is consistent with the behaviour of the experimental prototypes. Finally, the ability of the three FLPs as efficient catalysts was evaluated studying the hydrogenation of acetylene to yield ethylene.
