Unveiling the mechanisms of carboxylic acid esterification on acid zeolites for biomass-to-energy: A review of the catalytic process through experimental and computational studies

In recent years, there has been significant interest from industrial and academic areas in the esterification of carboxylic acids catalyzed by acidic zeolites, as it represents a sustainable and economically viable approach to producing a wide range of high-value-added products. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews that address the intricate reaction mechanisms occurring at the catalyst interface at both the experimental and atomistic levels. Therefore, in this review, we provide an overview of the esterification reaction on acidic zeolites based on experimental and theoretical studies. The combination of infrared spectroscopy with atomistic calculations and experimental strategies using modulation excitation spectroscopy techniques combined with phase-sensitive detection is presented as an approach to detecting short-lived intermediates at the interface of zeolitic frameworks under realistic reaction conditions. To achieve this goal, this review has been divided into four sections: The first is a brief introduction highlighting the distinctive features of this review. The second addresses questions about the topology and activity of different zeolitic systems, since these properties are closely correlated in the esterification process. The third section deals with the mechanisms proposed in the literature. The fourth section presents advances in IR techniques and theoretical calculations that can be applied to gain new insights into reaction mechanisms. Finally, this review concludes with a subtle approach, highlighting the main aspects and perspectives of combining experimental and theoretical techniques to elucidate different reaction mechanisms in zeolitic systems.

Al/SBA-15 Mesoporous Material: A Study of pH Influence over Aluminum Insertion into the Framework

Herein, ordered mesoporous materials like SBA-15 and Al/SBA-15 were prepared using the pH adjustment method. Thus, these materials were developed in different pH of synthesis, from the pH adjustment method using a KCl/HCl solution and varying the Si/Al molar ratio (5, 25, and 75). All the ordered mesoporous materials were characterized by FRX, 27Al NMR, SEM, XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption, and CO2 adsorption. From the applied method, it was possible to obtain SBA-15 and Al/SBA-15 with high mesoscopic ordering based on the XRD patterns, independent of the pH employed. From the chemical composition, the insertion of higher amounts of Al into the synthesis caused a progressive improvement in the structural and textural properties of the ordered mesoporous materials. Thus, the chosen synthesis conditions can lead to different aluminum coordination (tetrahedral and octahedral), which gives these materials a greater potential to be applied. The presence of Al in high amounts provides material with the ability to form micropores. Finally, the proposed method proved to be innovative; low-cost; less aggressive to the environment, with efficient insertion of aluminum in the framework of SBA-15 mesoporous material; and practical, based on only one step.

Function of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in xylose conversion into furfural

In this work, the xylose conversion and the selectivity to furfural were assessed over mesoporous sulfonic silica SBA-15-(X)SO3H catalysts doped with metal ions (X = Al(iii), Ti(iv) or Zr(iv)). The type and amount of acid sites were analyzed by adsorption of pivalonitrile. The SBA-15-(X)SO3H materials show Lewis acid sites (LAS) and two types of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) with different strengths. Type I (BAS I) belongs to terminal silanol groups, type II (BAS II) is ascribed to hydroxyl groups bonded to sulfur or transition metal, and the LAS is related to M-O bonds. Optimal reaction conditions for the most active catalyst (SBA-15-(Zr)SO3H) were 120 minutes of reaction at 160 °C, 20 wt% of catalyst, and 2.5% of xylose/solvent. Additionally, a kinetic study was carried out to calculate the rate constants, the activation energy, and the pre-exponential factor for the xylose dehydration reaction. It was found that the selectivity to furfural in sulfonic silica SBA-15-(X)SO3H catalysts was directly related to the BAS II fraction. While LAS negatively impacts the selectivity to furfural leading to the undesired reaction between furfural and xylose obtaining humins as secondary products.

Chlorella to fuel conversion on amphiphilic SO3H-SBA-15 catalysts: Pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics

The aim of this work was to propose a novel process to make Chlorella pyrolyzed and in situ upgraded to fuel over amphiphilic SO₃H-SBA-15 catalysts. This strategy is developed to build a Pickering emulsion system through the w/o (water/decalin) droplets. Chlorella catalytic pyrolysis has been conducted under the different heating rates to get the activation energy 166 kJ/mol (α = 0.5) according to the kinetic-free model. Palmitic acid, as a model compound, was employed for TG and DRIFTS analysis to elucidate the pyrolysis and deoxygenation reaction pathway. n-hexadecane pyrolysis at 3 MPa N₂ illustrated the peak cracking temperature declining from thermally 422 °C to catalytically 413 °C. N₂ physisorption of the fresh and post-reaction catalysts indicated that there is little catalyst decay. With improved thermal stability and hydrophobicity, the SO₃H-SBA-15 catalysts showed enhanced performance for Chlorella pyrolysis, and revealed the promising application for better fuel production in aqueous conversion.

Preparation and Application of Magnetic Nano-Solid Acid Catalyst Fe3O4-PDA-SO3H

A magnetic nano-solid acid catalyst Fe3O4-PDA-SO3H was synthetized through an efficient method, as an eco-friendly and more efficient catalyst. The obtained catalyst has uniform core-shell structure, appropriate particle size, and high acid density. Fe3O4-PDA-SO3H was applied to catalyze the esterification of levulinic acid (LA) with alcohols of different chain length to produce the levulinate esters. The catalytic effect was optimized from the aspects of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and acid-alcohol molar ratio. Furthermore, the response surface optimization method was used to obtain the optimal conditions. Verified under these conditions, the experimental results showed that the conversion rate of LA can reach 95.87%, which was much higher than common cationic exchange resin Amberlyst 36 and Amberlyst 46. Furthermore, the recovery and reuse of the Fe3O4-PDA-SO3H was demonstrated six times without obvious loss in the activity.
