Defect-rich Ce1-xZrxO2 solid solutions for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with CO2

Oxygen vacancy-mediated Mn2O3 catalyst with high efficiency and stability for toluene oxidation

Oxygen vacancy engineering in transition metal oxides is an effective strategy for improving catalytic performance. Herein, defect-enriched Mn2O3 catalysts were constructed by controlling the calcination temperature. The high content of oxygen vacancies and accompanying Mn4+ ions were generated in Mn2O3 catalysts calcined at low temperature, which could greatly improve the low-temperature reducibility and migration of surface oxygen species. DFT theoretical calculations further confirmed that molecular oxygen and toluene were easily adsorbed over defective α-Mn2O3 (222) facets with an energy of -0.29 and -0.48 eV, respectively, and corresponding OO bond length is stretched to 1.43 Å, resulting in the highly reactive oxygen species. Mn2O3-300 catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies exhibited the highest specific reaction rate and lowest activation energy. Furthermore, the optimized catalyst possessed the outstanding stability, water tolerance and CO2 yield. In comparison with the fresh Mn2O3-300 catalyst, the physical structure and surface property of the used catalyst remained almost unchanged regardless of whether undergoing the stability test at consecutive catalytic runs as well as high temperature, and water resistance test. In situ DRIFTS spectra further elucidated that introducing the water vapor had little effect on the reaction intermediates, indicating the excellent durability of the defect-enriched catalyst.

Controlling Metal-Oxide Reducibility for Efficient C-H Bond Activation in Hydrocarbons

Knowing the structure of catalytically active species/phases and providing methods for their purposeful generation are two prerequisites for the design of catalysts with desired performance. Herein, we introduce a simple method for precise preparation of supported/bulk catalysts. It utilizes the ability of metal oxides to dissolve and to simultaneously precipitate during their treatment in an aqueous ammonia solution. Applying this method for a conventional VOx -Al2 O3 catalyst, the concentration of coordinatively unsaturated Al sites was tuned simply by changing the pH value of the solution. These sites affect the strength of V-O-Al bonds of isolated VOx species and thus the reducibility of the latter. This method is also applicable for controlling the reducibility of bulk catalysts as demonstrated for a CeO2 -ZrO2 -Al2 O3 system. The application potential of the developed catalysts was confirmed in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene with CO2 and in the non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation to propene. Our approach is extendable to the preparation of any metal oxide catalysts dissolvable in an ammonia solution.

Metallic Catalysts for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane Using CO2

The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane using CO₂ (CO₂ -ODP) is a promising technique for realizing high-yield propylene production and CO₂ usage. Developing a highly efficient catalyst for CO₂ -ODP is essential and beneficial to the chemical industry and for realizing net-zero emissions. Many studies have investigated metal oxide-based catalysts, revealing that rapid deactivation and low selectivity remain limiting factors for their industrial applications. In recent years, metallic nanoparticle catalysts have become increasingly attractive due to their unique properties. Therefore, we summarize the performance of metal-based catalysts in CO₂ -ODP reactions by considering catalyst design concepts, different mechanisms in the reaction process, and the role of CO₂ .

CeO2-Promoted PtSn/SiO2 as a High-Performance Catalyst for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane with Carbon Dioxide

The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO₂ (CO₂-ODP) has been extensively investigated as a promising green technology for the efficient production of propylene, but the lack of a high-performance catalyst is still one of the main challenges for its industrial application. In this work, an efficient catalyst for CO₂-ODP was developed by adding CeO₂ to PtSn/SiO₂ as a promoter via the simple impregnation method. Reaction results indicate that the addition of CeO₂ significantly improved the catalytic activity and propylene selectivity of the PtSn/SiO₂ catalyst, and the highest space-time yield of 1.75 g(C₃H₆)·g(catalyst)^-1·h^-1 was achieved over PtSn/SiO₂ with a Ce loading of 6 wt%. The correlation of the reaction results with the characterization data reveals that the introduction of CeO₂ into PtSn/SiO₂ not only improved the Pt dispersion but also regulated the interaction between Pt and Sn species. Thus, the essential reason for the promotional effect of CeO₂ on CO₂-ODP performance was rationally ascribed to the enhanced adsorption of propane and CO₂ originating from the rich oxygen defects of CeO₂. These important understandings are applicable in further screening of promoters for the development of a high-performance Pt-based catalyst for CO₂-ODP.

Solvothermal Synthesis Routes to Substituted Cerium Dioxide Materials

We review the solution-based synthesis routes to cerium oxide materials where one or more elements are included in place of a proportion of the cerium, i.e., substitution of cerium is performed. The focus is on the solvothermal method, where reagents are heated above the boiling point of the solvent to induce crystallisation directly from the solution. This yields unusual compositions with crystal morphology often on the nanoscale. Chemical elements from all parts of the periodic table are considered, from transition metals to main group elements and the rare earths, including isovalent and aliovalent cations, and surveyed using the literature published in the past ten years. We illustrate the versatility of this synthesis method to allow the formation of functional materials with applications in contemporary applications such as heterogeneous catalysis, electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells, photocatalysis, luminescence and biomedicine. We pick out emerging trends towards control of crystal habit by use of non-aqueous solvents and solution additives and identify challenges still remaining, including in detailed structural characterisation, the understanding of crystallisation mechanisms and the scale-up of synthesis.

Synthesizing High-Volume Chemicals from CO2 without Direct H2 Input

Decarbonizing the chemical industry will eventually entail using CO₂ as a feedstock for chemical synthesis. However, many chemical syntheses involve CO₂ reduction using inputs such as renewable hydrogen. In this review, chemical processes are discussed that use CO₂ as an oxidant for upgrading hydrocarbon feedstocks. The captured CO₂ is inherently reduced by the hydrocarbon co-reactants without consuming molecular hydrogen or renewable electricity. This CO₂ utilization approach can be potentially applied to synthesize eight emission-intensive molecules, including olefins and epoxides. Catalytic systems and reactor concepts are discussed that can overcome practical challenges, such as thermodynamic limitations, over-oxidation, coking, and heat management. Under the best-case scenario, these hydrogen-free CO₂ reduction processes have a combined CO₂ abatement potential of approximately 1 gigatons per year and avoid the consumption of 1.24 PWh renewable electricity, based on current market demand and supply.

Interaction between V2O5 nanowires and high pressure CO2 gas up to 45 bar: Electrical and structural study

In the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) process that converts ethylbenzene to styrene, vanadium-based catalysts, especially V2O5, are used in a CO2 atmosphere to enhance process efficiency. Here we demonstrate that the activation energy of V2O5 can be manipulated by exposure to high pressure CO2, using V2O5 nanowires (VON). The oxidation of V4+ to V5+ was observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The ratio of V4+/V5+ which the typical comparable feature decreased 73.42%. We also found an increase in the interlayer distance in VON from 9.95 Å to 10.10 Å using X-ray diffraction patterns. We observed changes in the peaks of the stretching mode of bridging triply coordinated oxygen (V3-O), and the bending vibration of the bridging V-O-V, using Raman spectroscopy. We confirmed this propensity by measuring the CO2 pressure-dependent conductance of VON, up to 45 bar. 92.52% of decrease in the maximum conductance compared with that of the pristine VON was observed. The results of this study suggest that ODH process performance can be improved using the VON catalyst in a high pressure CO2 atmosphere.
