Abstract
People's perception on what is healthy and what is toxic food, determines food preferences and eating behavior. The difference between heathy and toxic food and food ingredients is however not always clear. This is illustrated with 10 examples. Unjustly, all-natural food is regarded as safe. Regulation on health claims on food and food risks is not balanced. Biphasic responses of the physiological effect of food ingredients show that mild toxicity of these substances results in health promotion. Nutritional substances with drugs may have either a negative or a positive effect on health. New toxicological methodologies can be brought into play, to better understand the dynamics of health and disease. Unfortunately, we still cannot taste toxicity.

Abstract
Inflammatory lung disease results in a high global burden of death and disability. There are no effective treatments for the most severe forms of many inflammatory lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, corticosteroid-resistant asthma, and coronavirus disease 2019; hence, new treatment options are required. Here, we review the role of oxidative imbalance in the development of difficult-to-treat inflammatory lung diseases. The inflammation-induced overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) means that endogenous antioxidants may not be sufficient to prevent oxidative damage, resulting in an oxidative imbalance in the lung. In turn, intracellular signaling events trigger the production of proinflammatory mediators that perpetuate and aggravate the inflammatory response and may lead to tissue damage. The production of high levels of ROS in inflammatory lung diseases can induce the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, the inactivation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling and histone deacetylase 2, a decrease in glucocorticoid binding to its receptor, and thus resistance to glucocorticoid treatment. Hence, antioxidant treatment might be a therapeutic option for inflammatory lung diseases. Preclinical studies have shown that antioxidants (alone or combined with anti-inflammatory drugs) are effective in the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases, although the clinical evidence of efficacy is weaker. Despite the high level of evidence for the efficacy of antioxidants in the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases, the discovery and clinical investigation of safer, more efficacious compounds are now a priority.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment is identified as one of the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder and can extensively affect the quality of life of patients. Based on these findings, this study aimed to investigate the possible effects of Riparin IV (Rip IV) on cognitive impairment induced by chronic administration of corticosterone in mice. METHODS Female Swiss mice were divided into four groups: control (Control), corticosterone (Cort), Riparin IV (Cort + Rip IV), and Fluvoxamine (Cort + Flu). Three groups were administered corticosterone (20 mg/kg) subcutaneously during the 22-day study, while the control group received only vehicle. After the 14th day, the groups were administered medications: Riparin IV (Rip IV), fluvoxamine (Flu), or distilled water, by gavage, 1 h after the subcutaneous injections. After treatment, mice underwent behavioral testing, and brain areas were removed for oxidative stress and cytokine content assays. RESULTS The results revealed that Cort-treated mice developed a cognitive impairment and exhibited a neuroinflammatory profile with an oxidative load and Th1/Th2 cytokine imbalance. Rip IV treatment significantly ameliorated the cognitive deficit induced by Cort and displayed a neuroprotective effect. CONCLUSION The antidepressant-like ability of Rip IV treatment against chronic Cort-induced stress may be due to its potential to mitigate inflammatory damage and oxidative stress. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect observed indicates Rip IV as a possible drug for antidepressant treatment of non-responsive patients with severe and cognitive symptoms.

Abstract
Reggio Calabria province (South Italy) is known for being almost the only area of cultivation of the bergamot fruit, grown principally for its essential oil, but today much studied for the health benefits of its juice. The biometrics and physico-chemical properties of the three (Citrus bergamia Risso) existing genotypes namely Castagnaro, Fantastico and Femminello were studied during fruit ripening from October to March. Castagnaro cultivar had the biggest and heaviest fruit during this harvest period. °Brix (7.9-10.0), pH (2.2-2.8) and formol number (1.47-2.37 mL NaOH 0.1 N/100 mL) were shown to be influenced by both the genotype and harvest date. Titratable acidity (34.98-59.50 g/L) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) (341-867 g/L) decreased during fruit ripening. The evolution of flavonoids such as neoeriocitrin, naringin, neohesperidin, brutieridin and melitidin was studied both in bergamot juice and in the bergamot cloudy juice which is the aqueous extract of bergamot during fruit processing. Bergamot cloudy juice contained a higher quantity of flavonoids compared to the juice. This study gives important information regarding the cultivar and the harvest date for producers who want to obtain the highest juice quantity or the highest juice quality from the bergamot fruit.
