Responses of hybrid striped bass to waterborne and dietary copper in freshwater and saltwater

Tissue metal concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activity in western north Atlantic white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias)

Anthropogenic practices have increased metal contamination in marine ecosystems. Most sharks have long lifespans, occupy an important ecological position at the top of marine food webs, and can accumulate metals. However, reference levels of metal contaminants in the tissues of sharks, particularly, apex predators such as the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), are lacking. In this study, concentrations of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), silver (Ag), and zinc (Zn) were measured in the muscle tissue of white (n = 42) and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier; n = 3) sharks. Metal exposure in various species, including sharks, has been correlated with increased oxidative stress. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to assess metal accumulation and antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) in the muscle tissue of the population of white sharks and tiger sharks inhabiting the Western North Atlantic. The measured parameters were qualitatively compared between species. The small sample size of tiger sharks (collected from only one site) limited statistical analyses, therefore, white sharks were the primary focus of this study. Differences in tissue metal (Cu, Cd, Ni, and Zn) concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activities were detected based on collection site, with significant positive correlations between Cd and enzymes, SOD and CAT, and Zn and enzymes, SOD and GPx in C. carcharias. Differences in Ni concentration were detected based on sex, with females having higher Ni levels. Additionally, plasma osmolality was not correlated with tissue metal concentrations; however, osmolality decreased with increasing length in C. carcharias. This study is the first to report baseline levels of Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Ag, and Pb in muscle of North Atlantic white sharks and provides new insights into oxidative stress responses of these sensitive species to metal contaminants.

Does Body Shape in Fundulus Adapt to Variation in Habitat Salinity?

Understanding the ecological pressures that generate variation in body shape is important because body shape profoundly affects physiology and overall fitness. Using Fundulus, a genus of fish that exhibits considerable morphological and physiological variation with evidence of repeated transitions between freshwater and saltwater habitats, we tested whether habitat salinity has influenced the macroevolution of body shape at different stages in development. After accounting for phylogenetic inertia, we find that body shape deviates from the optimal streamlined shape in a manner consistent with different osmoregulatory pressures exerted by different salinity niches at every stage of ontogeny that we examined. We attribute variation in body shape to differential selection for osmoregulatory efficiency because: (1) saline intolerant species developed body shapes with relatively low surface areas more conducive to managing osmoregulatory demands and (2) inland species that exhibit high salinity tolerances have body shapes similar to saline tolerant species in marine environments.

Spatial variation of heavy metals and uptake potential by Typha domingensis in a tropical reservoir in the midlands region, Zimbabwe

Pollution of aquatic ecosystems with heavy metals is now of global concern due to their dangers to human health and persistence in the environment. An investigation on the spatial distribution of heavy metals in water and sediments and the bioaccumulation potential of heavy metals by plant parts (i.e. roots, stems and leaves) of aquatic macrophyte Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud in a tropical reservoir was carried out. The results showed no difference in spatial distribution of heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, Mn) in water and sediments from the riverine to the dam wall. The concentration of heavy metals Fe, Cu, Cr and Zn in T. domingensis was of the order root > stem > leaves, but for Pb, Cd and Mn, it followed the order root > leaf > stem. The metal transfer between roots and shoots of T. domingensis followed the order Zn > Pb > Fe > Cu > Cd > Cr. The bio-concentration factor (BCF) was low (BCF < 1) for all the selected metals while the transfer factor (TF) varied among metals suggesting that T. domingensis is not an accumulator of the studied metals. The high concentration of heavy metals found in the water (0.7-16.14 mg L^-1) and sediments (43.6-569.18 mg kg^-1) present a potential risk to both ecological health and human health for the population living in the area. The results of metal concentration in water and sediments from this study are important as a baseline for future monitoring studies. Further studies on bioavailability of metals to other macrophytes and aquatic organisms are recommended.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo as a model system for identification and characterization of developmental toxins from marine and freshwater microalgae

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo has emerged as an important model of vertebrate development. As such, this model system is finding utility in the investigation of toxic agents that inhibit, or otherwise interfere with, developmental processes (i.e. developmental toxins), including compounds that have potential relevance to both human and environmental health, as well as biomedicine. Recently, this system has been applied increasingly to the study of microbial toxins, and more specifically, as an aquatic animal model, has been employed to investigate toxins from marine and freshwater microalgae, including those classified among the so-called "harmful algal blooms" (HABs). We have developed this system for identification and characterization of toxins from cyanobacteria (i.e. "blue-green algae") isolated from the Florida Everglades and other freshwater sources in South and Central Florida. Here we review the use of this system as it has been applied generally to the investigation of toxins from marine and freshwater microalgae, and illustrate this utility as we have applied it to the detection, bioassay-guided fractionation and subsequent characterization of developmental toxins from freshwater cyanobacteria.
