Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The N-terminal propeptide of type III collagen (PRO-C3) assay measures a pro-peptide released during type III collagen synthesis, an important feature of arterial stiffening and atherogenesis. There is a clinical need for improved non-invasive, cheap and easily accessible methods for evaluating individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this study, we investigate the potential of using circulating levels of PRO-C3 to mark the degree of vascular stenosis and risk of cardiovascular events. METHODS Baseline plasma levels of PRO-C3 were measured by ELISA in subjects belonging to the SUrrogate markers for Micro- and Macro-vascular hard endpoints for Innovative diabetes Tools (SUMMIT) cohort (N = 1354). Associations between PRO-C3 levels with vascular characteristics, namely stiffness and stenosis, and risk of future cardiovascular events were explored. Subjects were followed up after a median of 35 months (interquartile range 34-36 months), with recorded outcomes cardiovascular death and all-cause mortality. RESULTS We found a correlation between PRO-C3 levels and pulse wave velocity (rho 0.13, p = 0.000009), a measurement of arterial stiffness. Higher PRO-C3 levels were also associated with elevated blood pressure (rho 0.07, p = 0.014), as well as risk of cardiovascular mortality over a three-year follow-up period (OR 1.56, confidence interval 1.008-2.43, p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS Elevated circulating PRO-C3 levels are associated with arterial stiffness and future cardiovascular death, in the SUMMIT cohort, suggesting a potential value of PRO-C3 as a novel marker for declining vascular health.

Serum Adipocyte Fatty-Acid Binding Protein as an Independent Marker of Peripheral Artery Disease in Patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus. Abstract
The adipocyte fatty-acid binding protein (A-FABP) is predominantly expressed in macrophages and adipocytes and is an essential mediator of inflammation and atherosclerosis pathogenesis. Atherosclerosis is an aggravating factor for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Our study intended to study the association between PAD and serum A-FABP levels in type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. One hundred and twenty T2DM subjects were enrolled in the study. Fasting blood samples were collected to determine biochemical data and A-FABP levels. By the automatic oscillometric method, the ankle−brachial index (ABI) was measured. Low ABI was defined as any value < 0.9. Twenty participants with T2DM (16.7%) were included in the low ABI group. Low ABI T2DM participants had an increased mean body mass index, body fat mass, systolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein, urine albumin−creatinine ratio, and A-FABP levels compared to those in the normal ABI group. After variables significantly associated with PAD were adjusted by multivariate logistic regression analyses, circulating A-FABP levels (odds ratio [OR]: 1.138; 95 percent confidence interval [CI]: 1.023−1.266; p = 0.017) were identified as the independent marker of PAD. In conclusion, fasting serum A-FABP value has positive association with PAD in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Aortic stiffness (AS) is a major predictor of cardiovascular disease and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) is a novel adipokine that is positively correlated with AS in the general population. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between serum A-FABP levels and AS in nondialysis CKD patients. Fasting blood samples and baseline characteristics were obtained in 270 patients with nondialysis CKD. Serum A-FABP concentrations were determined by enzyme immunoassay and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) measurements were acquired using a validated tonometry system. Patients with cfPWV >10 m/s formed the AS group, while those with values ≤10 m/s comprised the comparison group. Among 270 CKD patients, 92 patients (34.1%) were in the AS group. Compared to those in the comparison group, patients in the AS group were older (P < .001), had a higher prevalence of diabetes, along with higher serum A-FABP level (P < .001), larger waist circumference (P = .004), and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (P = .001) but higher levels of body fat mass (P = .010), systolic blood pressure (P < .001), fasting glucose (P = .014), blood urea nitrogen (P = .009), and serum creatinine (P = .004). The serum log-A-FABP level was positively associated with log-cfPWV (β = 0.178, P = .001) in nondialysis CKD patients and multivariable logistic regression analysis identified serum A-FABP (P = .006), age (P = .001), and systolic blood pressure (P = .015) as independent predictors of AS in nondialysis-dependent CKD patients. Elevated A-FABP levels may be a significant predictor of AS in nondialysis CKD patients.

Abstract
Old age has been proven to be related to progressed arterial or aortic stiffness. Aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortalities in patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Higher serum concentrations of adipocyte fatty-acid-binding protein (A-FABP) could be considered a predictor of aortic stiffness in patients with hypertension or diabetes mellitus. This study aims to investigate the relationships between A-FABP and aortic stiffness in patients who have received CABG. A total of 84 CABG patients were enrolled in our study from September 2018 to May 2019. Serum A-FABP levels were determined using a commercial enzyme immunoassay. Carotid−femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) > 10 m/s was defined as aortic stiffness. Of the 84 CABG patients, 28 (33.3%) with aortic stiffness had a higher average age; exhibited higher rates of diabetes; and had higher serum creatinine, C-reactive protein, and A-FABP levels compared to controls. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that serum A-FABP levels (odds ratio (OR) = 1.068, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.017−1.121, p = 0.008) and age (OR = 1.204, 95% CI 1.067−1.359, p = 0.003) were independent predictors of aortic stiffness. Multivariable stepwise linear regression revealed significant positive correlations of age and A-FABP levels with cfPWV values. Serum A-FABP level is positively correlated with cfPWV values, and a high serum A-FABP level is associated with aortic stiffness in patients who have undergone CABG.

Abstract
Adiponectin has anti-inflammatory activity against atherosclerosis. Aortic stiffness is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus and elderly persons. This study aimed to evaluate whether low serum adiponectin levels were associated with aortic stiffness in geriatric diabetic patients. Blood samples were obtained from 130 diabetic participants aged ≥ 65 years. We defined high aortic stiffness based on a carotid−femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) of >10 m/s. Circulating adiponectin concentrations were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Sixty-six participants (50.8%) had aortic stiffness. Patients with aortic stiffness had lower serum adiponectin concentrations than those in the control group (p < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the adiponectin level (odds ratio: 0.939, 95% confidence interval: 0.898−0.981, p = 0.005) was an independent predictor of aortic stiffness in elderly diabetic persons. Multivariate forward stepwise linear regression analysis also demonstrated that the adiponectin level (β = −0.256, adjusted R2 change = 0.100, p = 0.003) was negatively associated with cfPWV values in older diabetic patients. In conclusion, serum adiponectin is negatively correlated with cfPWV and is an independent predictor of aortic stiffness in elderly diabetic persons.

Abstract
Objectives: Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) regulates triglyceride metabolism by reversibly inhibiting the lipoprotein lipase activity. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an independent risk factor for further cardiovascular disease. This study evaluated the relationship between the fasting serum ANGPTL3 levels and MetS in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Materials and Methods: Fasting blood samples were obtained from 90 patients with CAD. Serum ANGPTL3 levels were measured using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. MetS and its components were defined using the diagnostic criteria of the International Diabetes Federation. Results: Fifty-three patients (58.9%) had MetS. The hypertension (P = 0.001), diabetes (P < 0.001), body weight (P = 0.027), body mass index (P = 0.001), waist circumference (P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (P = 0.001), fasting glucose (P < 0.001), triglycerides (P < 0.001), blood urea nitrogen (P = 0.044), C-reactive protein (P = 0.010), insulin (P = 0.040), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (P = 0.002), and ANGPTL3 level (P = 0.001) of CAD patients who had MetS were higher, and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.001) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (P = 0.016) were lower. A binary logistic regression analysis of the significant variables also revealed that the ANGPTL3 level (odds ratio: 1.023, 95% confidence interval: 1.008–1.038, P = 0.002) was an independent predictor of MetS in patients with CAD. Conclusion: The results of our study indicated that the fasting ANGPTL3 level was positively associated with MetS among patients with CAD.

Abstract
Aortic stiffness (AoS) is a maladaptive response to hemodynamic stress and both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, and elevated AoS increases afterload for the heart. AoS is a non-invasive marker of cardiovascular health and metabolic dysfunction. Implementing AoS as a diagnostic tool is challenging as it increases with age and varies amongst races. AoS is associated with lifestyle factors such as alcohol and smoking, as well as hypertension and comorbid conditions including metabolic syndrome and its components. Multiple studies have investigated various biomarkers associated with increased AoS, and this area is of particular interest given that these markers can highlight pathophysiologic pathways and specific therapeutic targets in the future. These biomarkers include those involved in the inflammatory cascade, anti-aging genes, and the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system. In the future, targeting AoS rather than blood pressure itself may be the key to improving vascular health and outcomes. In this review, we will discuss the current understanding of AoS, measurement of AoS and the challenges in interpretation, associated biomarkers, and possible therapeutic avenues for modulation of AoS.

Abstract
There is an established link between cardiometabolic abnormality, central arterial stiffness, and preserved ejection fraction heart failure (HFpEF). Adipocyte free fatty acid binding protein (a-FABP) has been shown to signal endothelial dysfunction through fatty acid toxicity, though its role in mediating ventricular-arterial dysfunction remains unclear. We prospectively examined the associations of a-FABP with central arterial pressure using non-invasive applanation tonometry (SphygmoCor) and cardiac structure/function (i.e., tissue Doppler imaging [TDI] and global longitudinal myocardial strain [GLS]) in patients with cardiometabolic (CM) risk (n = 150) and HFpEF (n = 50), with healthy volunteers (n = 49) serving as a control. We observed a graded increase of a-FABP across the healthy controls, CM individuals, and HFpEF groups (all paired p < 0.05). Higher a-FABP was independently associated with higher central systolic and diastolic blood pressures (CSP/CPP), increased arterial augmentation index (Aix), lower early myocardial relaxation velocity (TDI-e'), higher left ventricle (LV) filling (E/TDI-e') and worsened GLS (all p < 0.05). During a median of 3.85 years (interquartile range: 3.68-4.62 years) follow-up, higher a-FABP (cutoff: 24 ng/mL, adjusted hazard ratio: 1.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.001-1.02, p = 0.04) but not brain natriuretic peptide, and higher central hemodynamic indices were related to the incidence of heart failure (HF) in fully adjusted Cox models. Furthermore, a-FABP improved the HF risk classification over central hemodynamic information. We found a mechanistic pathophysiological link between a-FABP, central arterial stiffness, and myocardial dysfunction. In a population with a high metabolic risk, higher a-FABP accompanied by worsened ventricular-arterial coupling may confer more unfavorable outcomes in HFpEF.

Abstract
Adipokines are active molecules with pleiotropic effects produced by adipose tissue and involved in obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Arterial stiffness, which is a consequence of arteriosclerosis, has been shown to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of arterial stiffness is complex but incompletely understood. Adipokines dysregulation may induce, by various mechanisms, vascular inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular remodeling, leading to increased arterial stiffness. This article summarizes literature data regarding adipokine-related pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the development of arterial stiffness, particularly in obesity, as well as the results of clinical and epidemiological studies which investigated the relationship between adipokines and arterial stiffness.

Abstract
Aims Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) is an adipokine implicating in various metabolic diseases. Elevated circulating levels of A-FABP correlate positively with poor prognosis in ischaemic stroke (IS) patients. No information is available concerning the role of A-FABP in the pathogenesis of IS. Experiments were designed to determine whether or not A-FABP mediates blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption, and if so, to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying this deleterious effects. Methods and results Circulating A-FABP and its cerebral expression were increased in mice after middle cerebral artery occlusion. Genetic deletion and pharmacological inhibition of A-FABP alleviated cerebral ischaemia injury with reduced infarction volume, cerebral oedema, neurological deficits, and neuronal apoptosis; BBB disruption was attenuated and accompanied by reduced degradation of tight junction proteins and induction of matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9). In patients with acute IS, elevated circulating A-FABP levels positively correlated with those of MMP-9 and cerebral infarct volume. Mechanistically, ischaemia-induced elevation of A-FABP selectively in peripheral blood monocyte-derived macrophages and cerebral resident microglia promoted MMP-9 transactivation by potentiating JNK/c-Jun signalling, enhancing degradation of tight junction proteins and BBB leakage. The detrimental effects of A-FABP were prevented by pharmacological inhibition of MMP-9. Conclusion A-FABP is a key mediator of cerebral ischaemia injury promoting MMP-9-mediated BBB disruption. Inhibition of A-FABP is a potential strategy to improve IS outcome. ![]()

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Albuminuria and serum adiponectin levels are factors that have been associated with the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes mellitus. Here we investigated the relationship between serum adiponectin levels and aortic stiffness in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease. METHODS Fasting blood samples were obtained from 80 nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) was measured using applanation tonometry; cfPWV values of >10 m/s were defined as aortic stiffness. Serum adiponectin levels were determined by enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS Forty-two patients (52.5%) with nondialysis diabetic kidney disease were diagnosed with aortic stiffness. The patients in this group were older (p = 0.011), had higher systolic blood pressure (p = 0.002) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratios (p = 0.013), included fewer females (p = 0.024), and had lower serum adiponectin (p = 0.001) levels than those in the control group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that serum adiponectin was independently associated with aortic stiffness (odds ratio = 0.930, 95% confidence interval: 0.884-0.978, p = 0.005) and also positively correlated with cfPWV values by multivariable linear regression (β = -0.309, p = 0.002) in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients. CONCLUSIONS The results suggested that serum adiponectin levels could be used to predict aortic stiffness in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
Background Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) plays essential roles in lipolysis, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum A-FABP levels and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Methods This study obtained fasting blood samples from 76 PD patients. A validated tonometry system was used to measure cfPWV. Patients with cfPWV values >10 m/s were classified into the high arterial stiffness group, whereas patients with values ≤10 m/s were classified into the low arterial stiffness group, according to the ESH-ESC 2013 guidelines. Serum A-FABP levels were measured using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results Twenty-five (32.9%) of the 76 PD patients were classified in the high arterial stiffness group. Compared with the patients in the low arterial stiffness group, the high arterial stiffness group was older (P = 0.002) and had a longer PD vintage (P = 0.011), higher diastolic blood pressure (DBP, P = 0.036), higher fasting glucose levels (P = 0.012), higher serum C reactive protein levels (P = 0.001), and higher serum A-FABP levels (P < 0.001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis of the factors significantly associated with central arterial stiffness revealed that A-FABP (odds ratio (OR): 1.165, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.056–1.284, P = 0.002), age (OR: 1.423, 95% CI: 1.153–1.757, P = 0.001), PD vintage (OR: 1.049, 95% CI: 1.015–1.085, P = 0.005), and DBP (OR: 1.152, 95% CI: 1.033–1.285, P = 0.011) were independent predictors of central arterial stiffness in PD patients. Furthermore, serum A-FABP levels (β = 0.476, adjusted R2 change: 0.197, P < 0.001) were significantly positively correlated with cfPWV according to the multivariable forward stepwise linear regression analysis. Conclusions A-FABP levels are an independent marker of central arterial stiffness in PD patients.

Abstract
Adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) is predictive of type 2 diabetes mellitus incidences and metabolic syndrome and is independently associated with atherosclerosis. The present study aimed to assess the association between serum A-FABP levels and future first hospitalization events in kidney transplantation (KT). We enrolled 72 KT patients from January through April 2012 and followed up on these subjects until June 2017. The first hospitalization events incidence was the primary endpoint. Using a commercially available enzyme immunoassay, serum A-FABP levels were measured from the patient's fasting blood samples. During a median 65-month follow-up, 49 first hospitalization events occurred. KT patients with first hospitalization events had greater incidences of hypertension, diabetes, and higher serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, triglyceride, and A-FABP levels than those without the events. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the cumulative incidence of first hospitalization events was greater in the high A-FABP group than in the low A-FABP group. Multivariate Cox analysis with significant variables showed that serum A-FABP (hazard ratio = 1.012; 95% confidence interval = 1.000-1.025; p = 0.044) was independently associated with first hospitalization events among KT patients. The results revealed that serum A-FABP is associated with first hospitalization events in KT patients. However, further prospective studies are needed to determine the mechanisms underlying this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) acts as a potent metabolic regulator. Serum FGF21 levels were significantly higher in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum FGF21 levels and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in T2DM patients. METHODS Fasting blood samples were obtained from 126 T2DM patients. MetS and its components were defined according to the diagnostic criteria from the International Diabetes Federation. Serum FGF21 concentrations were measured using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Among these patients, 84 (66.7%) had MetS. Female gender, hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), waist circumference (WC), body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), body fat mass, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c), triglyceride level (TG), urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), insulin level, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and FGF21 levels were higher, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level (HDL-C) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were lower in DM patients with MetS. Univariate linear analysis revealed that hypertension, BMI, WC, body fat mass, SBP, DBP, logarithmically transformed TG (log-TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level, log-glucose, log-creatinine, log-UACR, log-insulin, and log-HOMA-IR positively correlated, whereas HDL-C and eGFR negatively correlated with serum FGF21 levels in T2DM patients. Multivariate forward stepwise linear regression analysis revealed that body fat mass (adjusted R 2 change = 0.218; P=0.008) and log-TG (adjusted R 2 change = 0.036; P < 0.001) positively correlated, whereas eGFR (adjusted R 2 change = 0.033; P=0.013) negatively correlated with serum FGF21 levels in T2DM patients. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that higher serum FGF21 levels were positively associated with MetS in T2DM patients and significantly positively related to body fat mass and TG but negatively related to eGFR in these subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sclerostin and Dickkopf-1 are extracellular inhibitors of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway, which is implicated in the development of arterial stiffness. However, the correlation between aortic stiffness and sclerostin or Dickkopf-1 levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is unknown. METHODS Fasting blood samples were collected from 125 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Aortic stiffness was measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, and high aortic stiffness was defined by a carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity of >10 m/s. The serum sclerostin and Dickkopf-1 concentrations were determined using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS In total, 46 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (36.8%) had high levels of aortic stiffness. Compared to the control group without aortic stiffness, this group was significantly older, had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures, had higher blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio and serum sclerostin levels, and had significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and estimated glomerular filtration rates. After adjusting for confounders, serum sclerostin [odds ratio = 1.005 (1.002-1.007), p = 0.002] levels remained an independent predictor of aortic stiffness. Multivariate analysis showed that the serum sclerostin level ( β = 0.374, adjusted R2 change = 0.221, p < 0.001) was positively associated with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity. CONCLUSION Serum levels of sclerostin, but not Dickkopf-1, are positively correlated with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and independently predict aortic stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Adipocyte fatty acid–binding protein (FABP4) played critical roles in metabolic syndrome, inflammatory responses and cardiovascular diseases. It aimed to investigate the associations of serum FABP4 levels with early stroke recurrence. This study included the 206 acute ischemic stroke patients hospitalized in our institution. Stroke recurrence events were assessed at the 3-month follow-up. The median of FABP level was 22.6 (IQR, 17.9-31.6) ng/mL in patients with stroke recurrence (N=36), which was higher than in patients without stroke recurrence [16.9 (IQR, 11.8-21.4) ng/mL] (P<0.001). As a continuous variable, the unadjusted and adjusted risk of stroke recurrence would be increased by 12% (OR=1.12 [95% CI 1.06–1.17], P<0.001) and 8% (1.08 [1.02–1.14], P=0.006) for every 1 ng/ml increment of FABP4. The Area under the curve (AUC) of serum FABP4 and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score for predicting stroke recurrence was 0.73 (95% CI: 0.64–0.82) and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.64–0.81), presenting no discriminating capacity (P=0.45). In the combining model, the AUC of NIHSS score was further improved to 0.77 by FABP4 (0.77; 95% CI: 0.69–0.85), which was significant (P=0.01). The risk of stroke recurrence can be predicted by elevated FABP4 levels in serum of nondiabetic patients with first-ever ischemic stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) is a novel adipokine that contributes to the development of metabolic disorder, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and atherosclerosis. We determined the correlation between serum A-FABP and aortic stiffness in T2DM patients. METHODS Fasting blood samples were obtained from 156 patients with T2DM. Serum A-FABP concentration were determined using a commercial enzyme immunoassay. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) was measured using SphygmoCor System, and cfPWV values of >10 m/s were defined as high aortic stiffness. RESULTS Sixty participants (38.4%) fell under the high aortic stiffness group. This group, compared to the control group, showed older age (P = .004), higher systolic blood pressure (P < .001), diastolic blood pressure (P = .027), urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (P = .003), serum A-FABP (P < .001) and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (P = .001). After adjusting for factors significantly associated with aortic stiffness using multivariable logistic regression analysis, serum A-FABP [OR = 1.029 (1.002-1.058), P = .039] was found to be an independent predictor of aortic stiffness in T2DM patients. CONCLUSIONS Serum A-FABP is positively correlated with aortic arterial stiffness in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Purpose Hyperleptinemia has been independently associated with human cardiovascular (CV) diseases. Accordingly, we evaluate the association between serum leptin and future CV events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients and methods This study enrolled 98 patients with CAD from January to December 2012. The primary endpoint included incidences of major adverse CV events and hospitalization. Patients follow-up had been completed on June 30, 2017. Results After a median follow-up of 52 months, 43 CV events had occurred. Patients with CV events had higher systolic blood pressure (P = 0.030), total cholesterol (P = 0.034), C-reactive protein (P = 0.018), and serum leptin levels (P = 0.001) than those without CV events. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed greater cumulative incidences of CV events in the high leptin group (median leptin concentration >6.03 ng/mL) than in the low leptin group (log-rank P = 0.012). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that triglyceride (HR: 1.010; 95% CI: 1.001–1.018; P = 0.022) and leptin levels (HR: 1.054; 95% CI: 1.026–1.082; P < 0.001) were independently associated with CV events in patients with CAD. Conclusion Serum leptin levels could serve as a biomarker for future CV events in patients with CAD.

Abstract
Background: Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) is a cardiometabolic predictor of cardiovascular (CV) disease in humans. We evaluated the association between serum A-FABP levels and future CV events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: A total of 106 CAD patients were enrolled in this study between January and December 2012 and were followed-up until June 30, 2017. The primary endpoint was the incidence of major adverse CV events. Results: During a median follow-up period of 53 months, 44 CV events occurred. Patients with CV events presented higher systolic blood pressure (p = 0.020), total serum cholesterol (p = 0.047), and serum A-FABP levels (p < 0.001) compared with patients without CV events. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the cumulative incidence of CV events in the high A-FABP group (median A-FABP concentration of >17.63 ng/mL) was higher than that in the low A-FABP group (log-rank p < 0.001). Multivariate Cox analysis showed that triglycerides (hazard ratio (HR): 1.008, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.001-1.016, p = 0.026) and serum A-FABP levels (HR: 1.027, 95% CI: 1.009-1.047, p = 0.004) were independently associated with CV events. Conclusion: Serum A-FABP level is a biomarker for future CV events in patients with CAD. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the mechanisms underlying this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study we compared levels of selected adipokines between patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and healthy individuals and we determined their relationship with early vascular damage markers. METHODS Seventy-seven subjects: 56 patients with T2D (34 men and 22 women) and 21 healthy controls (8 men and 13 women) were examined in this cross-sectional study. Selected adipokines [adiponectin, adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP), fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), C1q/TNF-related protein 9 (CTRP-9), and allograft inflammatory factor-1 (AIF-1)] with possible cardiovascular impact were measured in all participants. To identify markers of vascular damage von Willebrand factor (vWF), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and arterial stiffness parameters were examined in all the subjects. RESULTS When compared with healthy controls, T2D had significantly higher levels of A-FABP [50.0 (38.1-68.6) vs. 28.6 (23.6-32.9) ng/mL, P < 0.0001] and lower levels of adiponectin [5.9 (4.3-9.0) vs. 11.3 (8.7-14.8) μg/mL, P < 0.0001]. Differences in other adipokines were not statistically significant. Adiponectin level correlated negatively with vWF levels (ρ = -0.29, P < 0.05) and PAI-1 (ρ = -0.36, P < 0.05) and A-FABP positively with vWF (ρ = 0.61, P < 0.05) and PAI-1 (ρ = 0.47, P < 0.05) and augmentation index (ρ = 0.26, P < 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis showed independent association between A-FABP and vWF (b = 0.24, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Patients with T2D have significantly higher levels of A-FABP and lower levels of adiponectin. These adipokines correlate with indicators of vascular damage and could contribute to cardiovascular risk in patients with T2D. A-FABP may participate in direct endothelium damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to test the serum concentrations of fatty acid-binding protein 4(FABP4) in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and to determine the relationship between patients with good and poor glycaemic control who were classified according to their glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. METHODS Children with T1DM were selected consecutively from our department from May 2016 to May 2017. For comparison, the same non-diabetic, age, sex, BMI and pubertal stage-matched healthy children were selected consecutively among non-diabetic children. Serum levels of FABP4 were batch analyzed using a commercially available ELISA assay. Patients were categorized into two groups according to their glycaemic control (Poor glycaemic control is HbA1c>7.0% and good is ≤7.0%). RESULTS In this study, 118 children with T1DM and 118 control cases were included. The mean serum FABP4 concentrations were significantly (P<.001) higher in T1DM as compared to controls. There was a modest correlation between serum concentrations of FABP4 and duration of diabetes (r=0.484, P<.001). Fifty-two patients were defined as poor glycaemic control (HbA1c>7.0%). The mean serum FABP4 concentrations were significantly (P=.002) higher in the poor glycaemic control as compared to the good glycaemic control. After adjusting for all other predictors, FABP4 remained an independent poor glycaemic control indictor with an adjusted OR of 1.07 (95% CI, 1.01-1.13; P=.03). CONCLUSIONS The present results indicated that FABP4 concentrations were increased and independently associated with the poor glycaemic control in Chinese children with T1DM.
