Recent progress in organic mechanoluminescent materials

Mechanochemistry: Fundamental Principles and Applications

Mechanochemistry is an emerging research field at the interface of physics, mechanics, materials science, and chemistry. Complementary to traditional activation methods in chemistry, such as heat, electricity, and light, mechanochemistry focuses on the activation of chemical reactions by directly or indirectly applying mechanical forces. It has evolved as a powerful tool for controlling chemical reactions in solid state systems, sensing and responding to stresses in polymer materials, regulating interfacial adhesions, and stimulating biological processes. By combining theoretical approaches, simulations and experimental techniques, researchers have gained intricate insights into the mechanisms underlying mechanochemistry. In this review, the physical chemistry principles underpinning mechanochemistry are elucidated and a comprehensive overview of recent significant achievements in the discovery of mechanically responsive chemical processes is provided, with a particular emphasis on their applications in materials science. Additionally, The perspectives and insights into potential future directions for this exciting research field are offered.

Programming Positive Mechanofluorescence in Liquid Crystalline Elastomers

Liquid single crystal elastomers (LSCEs) containing organic fluorophores within their polymeric network are attractive materials to detect forces with simple spectroscopic measurements. Hitherto, all mechanoluminescent LSCEs decrease their emission intensity upon mechanical stimulation; that is, they display negative mechanofluorescence. Such behavior is governed by the mechanically induced approximation of the quenching mesogenic units and the fluorophores. In this work, we propose the integration of fluorescent molecular rotors (FMRs), whose luminescence is not quenched by the mesogens, in LSCEs as a valuable strategy to conceive elastomeric materials programmed with exactly the opposite behavior, i.e., their fluorescence increases upon deformation (positive mechanofluorescence). Specifically, carbazole-indolenine dyes are interesting candidates for this purpose since their luminescence depends mainly on the degree of intramolecular rotation allowed by the local environment. On this basis, the uniaxial deformation of an LSCE, along its anisotropic direction, incorporating such FMRs will place the fluorophores in a more restricted medium, leading to the desired enhanced emission at the macroscale.

A Novel Strategy to Design and Construct AIE-active Mechanofluorochromic Materials via Regulation of Molecular Structure

In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3'-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (Φ_TM-2 =13.73 % and Φ_TM-3 =36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (Φ_TM-1 =1.48 % and Φ_TM-4 =4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents π-π stacking and enhances solid emission(ΦTM-2<ΦTM-3, ΦTM-1<ΦTM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: Δλ_TM-2 =43 nm and Δλ_TM-3 =41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of π-π intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.

Mechanofluorochromism with Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) Characteristics: A Perspective Applying Isotropic and Anisotropic Force

Organic mechanofluorochromic (MFC) materials (that change their emission under anisotropic and isotropic pressure) have attracted a great attention in recent years due to their promising applications in sensing pressure, storage devices, security inks, three-dimensional (3D) printing, etc. Stimuli-responsive organic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics would be an interesting class of materials to enrich the chemistry of MFC compounds. A diamond anvil cell (DAC) is a small tool that is employed to generate high and uniform pressure on materials over a small area. This article discusses the relationship between the chemical structure of AIE compounds and the change in emission properties under anisotropic (mechanical grinding) and isotropic (hydrostatic) pressure. The luminescent properties of such materials depend on the molecular rearrangement in the lattice, conformational changes, excited state transitions and weak intermolecular interactions. Hence, studying the change in luminescent property of these compounds under varying pressure will provide a deeper understanding of the excited-state properties of various emissive compounds with stress. The development of such materials and studies into the effect of pressure on their luminescence properties are summarized.

Mechanically Induced Bright Luminescence from 1,2-Dioxetane Containing PDMS Boosted by Fluoroboron Complex as an In-Chain Fluorophore

Improving mechanochemiluminescent (MCL) sensitivity of 1,2-dioxetane containing polymers is important for the applications of stress-reporting soft materials. Herein, a series of MCL poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) have been synthesized by simultaneously incorporating difluoroboron β-diketonate dye and 1,2-dioxetane as the co-crosslinkers to tune the energy transfer process across polymer chains. By covalently linked fluoroboron complex in PDMS network, the aggregation of the complex is overcome. Owing to its excellent opto-physical properties, this fluoroboron complex is shown to be an effective in-chain fluorophore to effectively enhance the chemiluminescence from polymeric 1,2-dioxetane that is broken either thermally or mechanically. Studies on the optomechanical properties of these PDMS show that MCL intensity is increased with the concentration of fluoroboron complex and the wavelength of the emission is shifted. The results of the present study appear to be broadly useful for designing elastomeric networks with chemiluminescent property not only attractive for optical technology, but also useful for damage self-reporting.

Utilizing Electroplex Emission to Achieve External Quantum Efficiency up to 18.1% in Nondoped Blue OLED

For the first time, electroplex emission is utilized to enhance the performance of nondoped blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). By decorating the twisted blue-emitting platform and adjusting the electronic structure, three molecules of 3Cz-Ph-CN, 3Cz-mPh-CN, and 3Ph-Cz-CN with a donor-acceptor structure are synthesized and investigated. When external voltage is applied, electroplex emission, which contributes to the emission performance of OLED, can be realized at the interface between the emitting layer and the electron-transporting layer. Accordingly, high external quantum efficiency of 18.1% can be achieved, while the emission wavelength of the device can be controlled in the blue region. Our results provide the possibility to enhance the performance of OLED through electroplex emission, in addition to the generally investigated thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Excitedly, when 3Ph-Cz-CN is used as host material in orange-emitting phosphorous OLEDs (PO-01 as the dopant), unprecedented high external quantum efficiency of 27.4% can also be achieved.

Mechanofluorochromism of pyrene-derived amidophosphonates

Aiming to develop a library of organic mechanofluorochromic (MFC) materials, solid-state emission properties of pyrene-derivatives with amidophosphonate groups (diethyl 1-(pyrene-1-carboxamido)alkylphosphonates, alkyl: methyl, isopropyl, phenyl) were investigated. All of these compounds were found to show strong blue fluorescence, and blue-to-green emission shift was identified upon grinding. Monomer and several excimer emissive species were identified by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence investigations. The characteristic green-to-blue thermal back reaction was observed even at room temperature without additives, which would be related to the flexibility of side groups for molecular rearrangement. We here demonstrated that the pyrene-derived compounds can be attractive platforms to host MFC properties.

Bilayer Thin Films That Combine Luminescent and Spin Crossover Properties for an Efficient and Reversible Fluorescence Switching

We report on the vacuum thermal deposition of bilayer thin films of the luminescent complex Ir(ppy)3, tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III), and the spin crossover complex [Fe(HB(tz)3)2], bis[hydrotris(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)borate]iron(II). Switching the spin state of iron ions from the low spin to the high spin state around 337 K leads to a reversible jump of the luminescence intensity, while the spectrum shape and the luminescence lifetime remain unchanged. The luminescence modulation occurs due to the different UV light absorption properties of the iron complex in the two spin states and its magnitude can therefore be precisely adjusted by varying the film thickness. These multilayer luminescence switches hold potential for micro- and nanoscale thermal sensing and imaging applications.

A Versatile Naphthalimide-Sulfonamide-Coated Tetraphenylethene: Aggregation-Induced Emission Behavior, Mechanochromism, and Tracking Glutathione in Living Cells

A tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative substituted with a sulfonyl-based naphthalimide unit (TPE-Np) was designed and synthesized. Its optical properties in solution and in the solid state were investigated. Photophysical properties indicated that the target molecule, TPE-Np, possessed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior, although the linkage between TPE and the naphthalimide unit was nonconjugated. Additionally, it exhibited an unexpected, highly reversible mechanochromism in the solid state, which was attributed to the change in manner of aggregation between crystalline and amorphous states. On the other hand, a solution of TPE-Np in a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide/phosphate-buffered saline was capable of efficiently distinguishing glutathione (GSH) from cysteine and homocysteine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Furthermore, the strategy of using poly(ethylene glycol)-polyethylenimine (PEG-PEI) nanogel as a carrier to cross-link TPE-Np to obtain a water-soluble PEG-PEI/TPE-Np nanoprobe greatly improved the biocompatibility, and this nanoprobe could be successfully applied in the visualization of GSH levels in living cells.

A mechano-responsive fluorescent xerogel based on an anthracene-substituted acylhydrazone derivative

AHBP-8 can form a stable organogel and enhanced fluorescence emission has been observed after gelation. The AHBP-8 xerogel exhibited favorable mechano-fluorochromism behavior.

Reversible mechanofluorochromism of aniline-terminated phenylene ethynylenes

Seven three-ring phenylene-ethynylene (PE) structural analogs, differing only in the lengths of alkyl chains on terminal aniline substituents, show 50-62 nm bathochromic shifts in emission maxima in response to mechanical force (mechanofluorochromism, MC). These shifts are fully reversible with heat or solvent fuming. Shearing of these solids yields a transition from green-emitting crystalline phases to orange-emitting amorphous phases as established by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Molecules with shorter alkyl chain lengths required higher temperatures to recover the hypsochromically shifted crystalline phases after grinding, while the recovery with chain lengths longer than butyl occurred at room temperature. In addition to this structure-dependent thermochromism, these compounds retain their MC properties in polymer hosts to various extents. The crystalline phases of these materials have PE chromophores that are twisted due to non-covalent perfluoroarene-arene (ArF-ArH) interactions involving perfluorophenyl pendants and the terminal rings of the PE chromophore, resulting in interrupted conjugation and an absence of chromophore aggregation. The MC behavior of an analog without the perfluoroarene rings is severely attenuated. This work demonstrates the general utility of twisted PEs as stimuli-responsive moieties and reveals clear structure-property relationships regarding the effects of alkyl chain length on these materials.
