Clean preparation of S-thiocarbamates with in situ generated hydroxide in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran

Direct C-H Sulfuration: Synthesis of Disulfides, Dithiocarbamates, Xanthates, Thiocarbamates and Thiocarbonates

In light of the important biological activities and widespread applications of organic disulfides, dithiocarbamates, xanthates, thiocarbamates and thiocarbonates, the continual persuit of efficient methods for their synthesis remains crucial. Traditionally, the preparation of such compounds heavily relied on intricate multi-step syntheses and the use of highly prefunctionalized starting materials. Over the past two decades, the direct sulfuration of C-H bonds has evolved into a straightforward, atom- and step-economical method for the preparation of organosulfur compounds. This review aims to provide an up-to-date discussion on direct C-H disulfuration, dithiocarbamation, xanthylation, thiocarbamation and thiocarbonation, with a special focus on describing scopes and mechanistic aspects. Moreover, the synthetic limitations and applications of some of these methodologies, along with the key unsolved challenges to be addressed in the future are also discussed. The majority of examples covered in this review are accomplished via metal-free, photochemical or electrochemical approaches, which are in alignment with the overraching objectives of green and sustainable chemistry. This comprehensive review aims to consolidate recent advancements, providing valuable insights into the dynamic landscape of efficient and sustainable synthetic strategies for these crucial classes of organosulfur compounds.

Biodiesel Purification by Solvent-Aided Crystallization Using 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran

The previous biodiesel purification by Solvent-Aided Crystallization (SAC) using 1-butanol as assisting agent and parameters for SAC were optimized such as coolant temperature, cooling time and stirring speed. Meanwhile, 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) was selected as an alternative to previous organic solvents for this study. In this context, it is used to replace solvent 1-butanol from a conducted previous study. This study also focuses on the technological improvements in the purification of biodiesel via SAC as well as to produce an even higher purity of biodiesel. Experimental works on the transesterification process to produce crude biodiesel were performed and SAC was carried out to purify the crude biodiesel. The crude biodiesel content was analyzed by using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to measure the composition of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) present. The optimum value to yield the highest purity of FAME for parameters coolant temperature, cooling time, and stirring speed is -4 °C, 10 min and 210 rpm, respectively. It can be concluded that the assisting solvent 2-MeTHF has a significant effect on the process parameters to produce purified biodiesel according to the standard requirement.

Recent Advances in the Electrochemical Functionalization of Isocyanides

Isocyanides are well-known as efficient CO surrogates and C1 synthons in modern organic synthesis. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to fully exploiting the reactivity of isocyanides, these transformations are primarily limited by their utilization of stoichiometric toxic chemical oxidants. With the recent resurgence of organic electrochemistry, which has considerably laid dormant over the past several decades, electrolysis has been identified as a green and powerful tool to enrich structural diversity by solely utilizing electric current as clean and inherently safe redox equivalents of stoichiometric chemical oxidants. In this regard, the unique reactivity of isocyanides has been studied in numerous electrochemical transformations. This review comprehensively highlights the most relevant progress in electrochemical strategies towards the functionalization of isocyanides up until June of 2022, with a focus on reaction outcomes and mechanisms.

Catalytic N-methyl amidation of carboxylic acids under cooperative conditions

The generation of N-methyl amides using simple acids with high atom economy is rare owning to the volatile nature of methyl amine. Herein, an atom economic protocol was disclosed to prepare this valuable motif under DABCO/Fe3O4 cooperative catalysis.

Electrosynthesis of S-thiocarbamates with disulfides as a sulfur source

An electrochemical oxidative synthesis of S-thiocarbamates by a carbamothioation reaction via a three-component coupling reaction (disulfide, water and isocyanide) is developed, which avoids the use of external oxidants and generates only hydrogen gas as the by-product. With NH₄I as the mediator and electrolyte, the desired S-thiocarbamates were obtained in good yields in an undivided cell at room temperature.

Visible-light-promoted synthesis of secondary and tertiary thiocarbamates from thiosulfonates and N-substituted formamides

A general visible-light-promoted metal-free synthesis of secondary and tertiary thiocarbamates starting from thiosulfonates and N-substituted formamides is developed. By employing rhodamine B as a photocatalyst and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant, a wide scope of thiocarbamates can be obtained through direct thiolation of acyl C-H bonds under irradiation of blue light at room temperature for 12 h.

Electrochemical synthesis of quinazolinone via I2-catalyzed tandem oxidation in aqueous solution

The development of protocols for synthesizing quinazolinones using biocompatible catalysts in aqueous medium will help to resolve the difficulties of using green and sustainable chemistry for their synthesis. Herein, using I₂ in coordination with electrochemical synthesis induced a C-H oxidation reaction which is reported when using water as the environmentally friendly solvent to access a broad range of quinazolinones at room temperature. The reaction mechanism strongly showed that I₂ cooperates electrochemically promoted the oxidation of alcohols, then effectively cyclizing amides to various quinazolinones.

Copper(i)-catalyzed intermolecular cyanoarylation of alkenes: convenient access to α-alkylated arylacetonitriles

A novel Cu(i)-catalyzed intermolecular cyanoarylation of alkenes with diaryliodonium salts as a radical arylating reagent and tetra-butylammonium cyanide as an electrophilic cyanating reagent was established. A broad range of α-alkylated arylacetonitriles were efficiently constructed in good to excellent yields under base- and oxidant-free and mild conditions.

Exploration of New Biomass-Derived Solvents: Application to Carboxylation Reactions

A range of hitherto unexplored biomass-derived chemicals have been evaluated as new sustainable solvents for a large variety of CO2 -based carboxylation reactions. Known biomass-derived solvents (biosolvents) are also included in the study and the results are compared with commonly used solvents for the reactions. Biosolvents can be efficiently applied in a variety of carboxylation reactions, such as Cu-catalyzed carboxylation of organoboranes and organoboronates, metal-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation, borocarboxylation, and other related reactions. For many of these reactions, the use of biosolvents provides comparable or better yields than the commonly used solvents. The best biosolvents identified are the so far unexplored candidates isosorbide dimethyl ether, acetaldehyde diethyl acetal, rose oxide, and eucalyptol, alongside the known biosolvent 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. This strategy was used for the synthesis of the commercial drugs Fenoprofen and Flurbiprofen.

Microwave-assisted simple synthesis of 2-anilinopyrimidines by the reaction of 2-chloro-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine with aniline derivatives

A series of 2-anilinopyrimidines including novel derivatives has been obtained from 2-chloro-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine by aromatic nucleophilic substitution with differently substituted anilines under microwave conditions. The substituents had a significant impact on the course and efficiency of the reaction. The results reported herein demonstrate the efficacy of microwaves in the synthesis of the title heterocyclic compounds as compared to the results obtained with conventional heating. The 2-anilinopyrimidines described are of potential bioactivity.

A rapid, one pot, green approach by microwave heating in ethanol provides a new method to obtain active and new potentially active compounds in high yields.

ZnO-nanorods Promoted Synthesis of α-amino Nitrile Benzofuran Derivatives using One-pot Multicomponent Reaction of Isocyanides

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

In this work ZnO-nanorod (ZnO-NR) as reusable catalyst promoted Strecker-type reaction of 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone, isopropenylacetylene, trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN), primary amines and isocyanides at ambient temperature under solvent-free conditions and produced α-amino nitriles benzofuran derivatives in high yields. These synthesized compounds may have antioxidant ability.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

ZnO-NRs in these reactions were prepared according to reported article. 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone 1 (2 mmol) and isopropenylacetylene 2 (2 mmol) were mixed and stirred for 30 min in the presence of ZnO-NR (10 mol%) under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. After 30 min, primary amine 3 (2 mmol) was added to the mixture gently and the mixture was stirred for 15 min. After this time TMSCN 4 (2 mmol) was added to the mixture and stirred for 15 min. After completion of the reaction, as indicated by TLC, isocyanides 5 was added to mixture in the presence of catalyst.

RESULTS

In the first step of this research, the reaction of 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone 1, isopropenylacetylene 2, methyl amine 3a, trimethylsilyle cyanide 4 and tert-butyl isocyanides 5a was used as a sample reaction to attain the best reaction conditions. The results showed this reaction performed with catalyst and did not have any product without catalyst after 12 h.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we investigate multicomponent reaction of 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone 1, isopropenylacetylene 2, primary amines 3, trimethylsilyl cyanide 4 and isocyanides along with ZnO-NRs as reusable catalyst at room temperature under solvent-free conditions which generates α-amino nitrile benzofuran derivatives in high yields. The advantages of our method are high atom economy, green reaction conditions, higher yield, shorter reaction times, and easy work-up, which are in good agreement with some principles of green chemistry. The compounds 8c exhibit excellent DPPH radical scavenging activity and FRAP compared to synthetic antioxidants BHT and TBHQ.

Electrosynthesis of polycyclic quinazolinones and rutaecarpine from isatoic anhydrides and cyclic amines

A direct decarboxylative cyclization between readily available isatoic anhydrides and cyclic amines was established to construct polycyclic fused quinazolinones employing electrochemical methods. This procedure was performed in an undivided cell without the use of a transition-metal-catalyst and external oxidant. A broad scope of polycyclic fused quinazolinones were obtained in moderate to good yields. Additionally, rutaecarpine was also prepared through our method in one step in good yield.

Polycyclic quinazolinones and rutaecarpine were synthesized from isatoic anhydrides and cyclic amines through an electrochemical method without an external oxidant and transition-metal-catalyst.

Molecular iodine-catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of α-cyanopyrrolines with ambient air as the oxidant under neat conditions

An eco-friendly and practical method for synthesizing α-cyanopyrrolines via iodine-catalyzed multicomponent tandem reaction of alkenes, TMSCN and N,N-disubstituted formamides with ambient air as the sole oxidant was developed.

Stereoselective synthesis of trans-aziridines via intramolecular oxidative C(sp3)–H amination of β-amino ketones

An expedient strategy for the synthesis of trans-2,3-disubstituted via the intramolecular KI/TBHP mediated oxidative dehydrogenative C(sp³)–H amination reaction was presented.

Oxidative radical coupling of hydroquinones and thiols using chromic acid: one-pot synthesis of quinonyl alkyl/aryl thioethers

An efficient, simple and practical protocol for one-pot sequential oxidative radical C–H/S–H cross-coupling of thiols with hydroquinones (HQs) and oxidation leading to the formation of quinonyl alkyl/aryl thioethers using H₂CrO₄ was developed. This cross-coupling of thiyl and aryl radicals offers mono thioethers in good to moderate yield and works well with a wide variety of thiols. Similarly, this method works well for coupling of 2-amino thiophenol and HQs to form phenothiazine-3-ones 5a–c. C–S bond formation via thioether synthesis was observed using a chromium reagent for the first time. Theoretical studies on the pharmacokinetic properties of compounds 5a–c revealed that due to drug-like properties, compound 5b strongly binds with Alzheimer's disease (AD) associated AChE target sites.

Oxidative radical C–H/S–H cross coupling of hydroquinones and thiols and oxidation to quinone using a H₂CrO₄ system was developed.

KF/Clinoptilolite Nanoparticles as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Green Synthesis of pyrido[2,1-a]isoquinolines using Four-Component Reaction of Alkyl Bromides

OBJECTIVE

KF/Clinoptilolite nanoparticles are employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for the preparation of pyrido[2,1-a]isoquinoline derivatives through a four-component reaction of isoquinoline, two different alkyl bromides and an electron deficient internal alkynes at ambient temperature in water as green solvent.

METHODS

In this research, (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical trapping and reducing potential of ferric ion experiments was used for determining antioxidant activity of some newly synthesized compounds such as 5a, 5c, 5f and 5g and comparing results with synthetic antioxidants (TBHQ and BHT).

RESULTS

Compounds 5a, 5c, 5f and 5g display trace DPPH radical trapping and excellent reducing power of ferric ion. Furthermore, the power of some prepared compounds against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was proved by employing the disk dispersion experiment.

CONCLUSION

The obtained results of disk diffusion test showed that compounds 5a, 5d and 5e prevented the bacterial growth. The reported procedure shows the advantages of clean reaction, high yield and simple purification.

Access to 1-amino-3,4-dihydroisoquinolines via palladium-catalyzed C–H bond aminoimidoylation reaction from functionalized isocyanides

Efficient and practice access to 1-amino-3,4-dihydroisoquinolines, through palladium-catalyzed intramolecular C–H bond aminoimidoylation of α-benzyl-α-isocyanoacetates, has been developed.

Visible-light-promoted direct C–H/S–H cross-coupling of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with thiols leading to 3-sulfenylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in air

A new and efficient visible-light-mediated strategy has been developed for the synthesis of 3-sulfenylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones via rhodamine B catalyzed C–H/S–H cross-coupling of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with thiols in air at room temperature.

Combined inorganic base promoted N-addition/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to construct homoallyl sulfur-containing pyrazolones

The first sequentially combined inorganic base promoted N-addition/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement reaction of α-alkylidene pyrazolinones and propargyl sulfonium salts has been reported to construct homoallyl sulfur-containing pyrazolones with moderate to excellent yields. α-Alkylidene pyrazolinones function as N-nucleophilic agents distinguished from the reported C-addition reactions. Propargyl sulfonium salts were first involved in the [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement protocol differentiated from the well-established annulation reactions. The excellent regioselectivity, the broad scope of substrates, gram-scale synthesis and convenient transformation embody the synthetic superiority of this cascade process.

The combined inorganic base promoted N-addition/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of α-alkylidene pyrazolinones and propargyl sulfonium salts has been reported to construct homoallyl sulfur-containing pyrazolones with moderate to excellent yields.
