Pd nanoparticles on defective polymer carbon nitride: Enhanced activity and origin for electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination reaction

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination system with antiscaling and anti-chlorine poisoning features for salt-laden wastewater treatment

The high salinity and coexistence of scaling ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, HCO₃^-) in wastewater challenge the efficacy and durability of palladium (Pd)-mediated electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) reaction for chlorinated organic pollutant detoxification, due to the accompanying Cl^- poisoning at Pd sites and scaling on electrode. In a concentrated NaCl solution (5.8 g L ^- 1) with Ca²⁺ (80.0 mg L ^- 1), Mg²⁺ (30.0 mg L ^- 1) and HCO₃^- (180.0 mg L ^- 1), the EHDC efficiency of Pd towards 2,4-dichlorophenol decreases significantly from 67.8% to 33.1% in 72.0 h of reaction, and the electrode is covered with layers of fluffy aragonite precipitate. Herein we demonstrate the inclusion of a commercial antiscalant 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) can prevent both scale formation and Cl^- poisoning, leading to an efficient and steady EHDC process. A mechanistic study reveals that the unique dual function of PBTC primarily originates from the bearing phosphonate and carboxyl groups. With the large affinity of these groups (especially the phosphonate group) for scaling cations and Pd, the PBTC can chelate and stabilize the scaling cations in water and replace Cl^- at Pd surface. It can also release protons, and trigger the formation of more electron-deficient Pd^δ+ species via PBTC-Pd binding, leading to an enhanced EHDC. This work provides effective solutions to the scaling/poisoning issues that commonly encountered in real wastewater and paves a solid road for EHDC application in pollution abatement.

Sulfite activation by cobaltosic oxide nanohydrangeas for tetracycline degradation: Performance, degradation pathways and mechanism

Sulfite has been used as a classic reductant for the dehalogenation and reduction of organic compounds for a long time, it is recently deemed as a promising alternative (for persulfate) to generate sulfate radical for wastewater treatment due to its low price and eco-toxicity. In contrast with the enormous work developed in the field of tetracycline (TC) degradation via PMS activization, sulfite activization could play a important role in TC degradation but there is only very few available reports in this area. Herein, the novel and efficient CoNHs nanocatalyst is designed and developed, via immobilization of hydrangea-shaped Co₃O₄ nanoparticles onto graphitic carbon nanosheet (GCN), for the degradation of tetracycline via sulfite activation. The detailed characterizations have confirmed that CoNHs possesses a nanohydrangea-shaped structure with high microporosity. The comparison with other supports (such as CeO₂ and MoS₂), CoNHs provides the highest degradation efficiency in TC degradation, due to the synergistic effect between Co₃O₄ and GCN. Free radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis confirm that SO₄•^- and O₂•^- are major reactive oxygen species in the CoNHs/sulfite system. This work could provide a simple, economical and durable cobalt-based catalyst for organic wastewater treatment via sulfite activation.

Cu2+/Cu+ cycle promoted PMS decomposition with the assistance of Mo for the degradation of organic pollutant

The limited production of Cu⁺ in the Cu²⁺/PMS processes constrained its large-scan application for the elimination of organic pollutants. In this study, molybdenum powder (Mo) was applied as the co-catalyst to improve the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in Cu²⁺/PMS system at pH 5.6. By the assistance of Mo, Cu²⁺ was rapidly reduced to Cu⁺ which exhibited super activity for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Compared with Cu²⁺/PMS processes, the PMS decomposition rate and 2,4-DCP degradation efficiency respectively increased by 62.1% and 83.6% in the Mo co-catalytic Cu²⁺/PMS system after reaction for 20 min. The degradation of 2,4-DCP was completed via both the free radical and non-radical pathways and the free radicals rather than Cu³⁺ contributed most to the reaction. In contrast to fresh Mo, the ratio of Mo⁴⁺ increased and Mo⁶⁺ decreased in the used Mo powder, due to the oxidation of Mo⁰ by Cu²⁺ and/or ∙OH and the reduction of Mo⁶⁺ by O₂∙^-. Additionally, the coexistence of Cl^- and humic acid with low concentrations showed little effects on the Mo/Cu²⁺/PMS system while HCO₃^- presented an obvious depression for 2,4-DCP degradation. During five cycling runs, all the degradation rates were higher than 92.8%, indicating the good stability of Mo/Cu²⁺/PMS system.

Oxygenated functional group-driven spontaneous fabrication of Pd nanoparticles decorated porous carbon nanosheets for electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination of 4-chlorophenol

Researchers have been committed to reducing the hazardous pollutants by developing efficient catalysts while ignoring the pollution caused by the use of toxic surface capping agents, reductants and/or organic solvents in the catalyst preparation process. To alleviate such problems, we here report a novel one-step oxygenated functional group-driven electroless deposition strategy to synthesize clean and uniformly distributed Pd nanoparticles (NPs) using porous carbon nanosheets (PCN) as both substrates and reducing agents. It is observed that the oxygenated functional groups enriched PCN possesses a low work function and allows the spontaneous reduction of PdCl₄^2- ions to Pd NPs deposited on the PCN support (Pd/PCN). The particle size of Pd NPs can be flexibly modulated by simply controlling the immersing time and thereby their maximum catalytic performances can be achieved. Specifically, the optimal Pd/PCN-08 with a Pd loading of 3.0 wt% shows an excellent activity with a turnover frequency of 0.38 min^-1 for electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), superior to the previously reported materials. The stability of Pd/PCN-08 for 4-CP ECH is impressive in repetitive cycles. This work proposes a facile and efficient strategy to synthesize high-performance catalysts for detoxifying the hazardous organic pollutants.
