A short review on recent progress of Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts: The role of Bi metal

Promoted photocatalytic N2 fixation to ammonia over floatable TiO2/Bi/Carbon cloth through relay pathway

The floatable photocatalyst at N2-water interface allows the adequate supply of N2 reactant and the utilization of photothermal energy for photocatalytic N2 fixation, however, the presence of non-volatile NO3- product poses a challenge to the stability as it easily covers the catalytic active sites. Herein, a floatable TiO2/Bi/CC (Carbon cloth) photocatalyst was designed, in which the non-volatile NO3- can be transformed to the volatile NH3 via the newly synergistic relay photocatalysis pathway (N2 → NO3- → NH3) between TiO2 (N2 → NO3-) and Bi (NO3- → NH3). Attractively, the spontaneous NO3- → NO2- step occurs on Bi component to promote the relay pathway performing. Therefore, TiO2/Bi/CC system displays better long-term stability than TiO2/CC, and moreover, it achieves a higher NH3 yield of 8.28 mmol L-1 h-1 g-1 (i.e. 4.14 mmol h-1 m-2) than that 1.46 mmol L-1 h-1 g-1 for TiO2/Bi powder. Importantly, the N2 fixation products by TiO2/Bi/CC effectively promote lettuce growth and enhance lettuce nutrient contents, which further validates the feasibility of this system in large-scale application of crop cultivation.

Synthesis of 3D Sb2O3-based heterojunction reinforced by SPR effect and photo-Fenton mechanism for upgraded oxidation of metronidazole in water environments

The traditional homogenous and heterogenous Fenton reactions have frequently been restrained by the lower production of Fe2+ ions, which significantly obstructs the generation of hydroxyl radicals from the decomposition of H2O2. Thus, we introduce novel photo-Fenton-assisted plasmonic heterojunctions by immobilizing Fe3O4 and Bi nanoparticles onto 3D Sb2O3 via co-precipitation and solvothermal approaches. The ternary Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi composites offered boosted photo-Fenton behavior with a metronidazole (MNZ) oxidation efficiency of 92% within 60 min. Among all composites, the Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi-5% hybrid exhibited an optimum photo-Fenton MNZ reaction constant of 0.03682 min- 1, which is 5.03 and 2.39 times higher than pure Sb2O3 and Sb2O3/Fe3O4, respectively. The upgraded oxidation activity was connected to the complementary outcomes between the photo-Fenton behavior of Sb2O3/Fe3O4 and the plasmonic effect of Bi NPs. The regular assembly of Fe3O4 and Bi NPs enhances the surface area and stability of Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi. Moreover, the limited absorption spectra of Sb2O3 were extended into solar radiation by the Fe3+ defect of Fe3O4 NPs and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi NPs. The photo-Fenton mechanism suggests that the co-existence of Fe3O4/Bi NPs acts as electron acceptor/donor, respectively, which reduces recombination losses, prolongs the lifetime of photocarriers, and produces more reactive species, stimulating the overall photo-Fenton reactions. On the other hand, the photo-Fenton activity of MNZ antibiotics was optimized under different experimental conditions, including catalyst loading, solution pH, initial MNZ concentrations, anions, and real water environments. Besides, the trapping outcomes verified the vital participation of •OH, h+, and •O2- in the MNZ destruction over Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi-5%. In summary, this work excites novel perspectives in developing boosted photosystems through integrating the photocatalysis power with both Fenton reactions and the SPR effects of plasmonic materials.

Piezo-enhanced near infrared photocatalytic nanoheterojunction integrated injectable biopolymer hydrogel for anti-osteosarcoma and osteogenesis combination therapy

Preventing local tumor recurrence while promoting bone tissue regeneration is an urgent need for osteosarcoma treatment. However, the therapeutic efficacy of traditional photosensitizers is limited, and they lack the ability to regenerate bone. Here, a piezo-photo nanoheterostructure is developed based on ultrasmall bismuth/strontium titanate nanocubes (denoted as Bi/SrTiO3), which achieve piezoelectric field-driven fast charge separation coupling with surface plasmon resonance to efficiently generate reactive oxygen species. These hybrid nanotherapeutics are integrated into injectable biopolymer hydrogels, which exhibit outstanding anticancer effects under the combined irradiation of NIR and ultrasound. In vivo studies using patient-derived xenograft models and tibial osteosarcoma models demonstrate that the hydrogels achieve tumor suppression with efficacy rates of 98.6 % and 67.6 % in the respective models. Furthermore, the hydrogel had good filling and retention capabilities in the bone defect region, which exerted bone repair therapeutic efficacy by polarizing and conveying electrical stimuli to the cells under mild ultrasound radiation. This study provides a comprehensive and clinically feasible strategy for the overall treatment and tissue regeneration of osteosarcoma.

Photocatalytic Enhancement Strategy with the Introduction of Metallic Bi: A Review on Bi/Semiconductor Photocatalysts

Semiconductor photocatalysis has great potential in the fields of solar fuel production and environmental remediation. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic efficiency still constrains its practical production applications. The development of new semiconductor materials is essential to enhance the solar energy conversion efficiency of photocatalytic systems. Recently, the research on enhancing the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors by introducing bismuth (Bi) has attracted widespread attention. In this review, we briefly overview the main synthesis methods of Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts and summarize the control of the micromorphology of Bi in Bi/semiconductors and the key role of Bi in the catalytic system. In addition, the promising applications of Bi/semiconductors in photocatalysis, such as pollutant degradation, sterilization, water separation, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation, are outlined. Finally, an outlook on the challenges and future research directions of Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts is given. We aim to offer guidance for the rational design and synthesis of high-efficiency Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Advances in Electrochemical Energy Storage over Metallic Bismuth-Based Materials

Bismuth (Bi) has been prompted many investigations into the development of next-generation energy storage systems on account of its unique physicochemical properties. Although there are still some challenges, the application of metallic Bi-based materials in the field of energy storage still has good prospects. Herein, we systematically review the application and development of metallic Bi-based anode in lithium ion batteries and beyond-lithium ion batteries. The reaction mechanism, modification methodologies and their relationship with electrochemical performance are discussed in detail. Additionally, owing to the unique physicochemical properties of Bi and Bi-based alloys, some innovative investigations of metallic Bi-based materials in alkali metal anode modification and sulfur cathodes are systematically summarized for the first time. Following the obtained insights, the main unsolved challenges and research directions are pointed out on the research trend and potential applications of the Bi-based materials in various energy storage fields in the future.

Enhanced generation of oxysulfur radicals by the BiOBr/Montmorillonite activated sulfite system: Performance and mechanism

The easily synthesized, cost-effective, and stable photocatalysts for sulfite activation are always required for the enhancement of organic contaminants degradation. Herein, the facile coprecipitation synthesis of Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr)/Montmorillonite (MMT) was reported, which could activate sulfite (SO32-/HSO3-) under sunlight and accelerate the catalytic performance more effectively than pristine BiOBr. After adding sulfite to the photocatalysis system, the photodegradation efficiency of atrazine (ATZ) achieved 73.7% ± 1.5% after 5 min and 94.4% ± 1.6% after 30 min of sunlight irradiation with BiOBr/MMT. The BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system also presented remarkable photocatalytic performance to eliminate various contaminants, including ciprofloxacin, sulfadiazine, tetracycline, and carbamazepine. The various features of the photocatalyst materials were studied, including their surface morphology, structure, optical properties, and composition. The results illustrated that by adding MMT, the bandgap of the pristine BiOBr was reduced and the surface area was increased, which led to an increased ability to adsorb materials. Results of various influence factors showed this enhanced system had satisfactory and stable removal performance of ATZ in the pH range of 3.0-6.5, but HPO42- had a strong negative effect on the system performance. Oxysulfur radicals (SO5·- and SO4·-), h+, and 1O2 were discovered as the prevailing active species in the BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system. The proposed degradation mechanism of this photocatalyst-enhanced system revealed that sulfite adsorption on the surface of the photocatalyst played a vital role during the initial phase, and the degradation pathway of ATZ was discussed. This study provides a new synthesis strategy of a photocatalyst for sulfite activation and expands the potential uses of Bi-based photocatalysts in degrading difficult-to-remove organic pollutants.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

One-pot solvothermal synthesis of Bi/Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 S-scheme heterojunction with enhanced photoactivity towards antibiotic oxytetracycline degradation under visible light

A novel noble-metal-free ternary Bi/Bi₂S₃/Bi₂WO₆ S-scheme heterojunction and Schottky junction was successfully synthesized by one-pot solvothermal method. UV-Vis spectroscopy showed improved light absorption in the ternary composite structure. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy confirmed the reduced interfacial resistivity and photogenerated charge recombination rate of the composites. Using oxytetracycline (OTC) as model pollutant, Bi/Bi₂S₃/Bi₂WO₆ presented high photocatalytic activity towards OTC degradation, where the removal rate of Bi/Bi₂S₃/Bi₂WO₆ was 1.3 and 4.1 times higher than that of Bi₂WO₆ and Bi₂S₃ under visible light irradiation in 15 min, respectively. The excellent visible photocatalysis activity was attributed to the SPR effect of metal Bi and the direct S-scheme heterojunction of Bi₂S₃ and Bi₂WO₆ with the matched energy band structure, which led to the increased electron transfer rate and high separation efficiency of the photogenerated election-hole pairs. After seven cycles, the degradation efficiency for 30 ppm OTC with Bi/Bi₂S₃/Bi₂WO₆ only decreased 20.4%. In the degradation solution, the composite photocatalyst leached only 16 ng/L Bi and 26 ng/L W of metal with high photocatalytic stability. Moreover, free radical quenching experiment and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy experiment revealed that ·O₂^-, ¹O₂, h⁺ and ·OH played crucial roles in the photocatalytic degradation of OTC. Based on the analysis of high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for the intermediates in the degradation process, the degradation pathway was provided. Finally, combined with ecotoxicological effect analysis, the decreased toxicity of OTC after degradation towards rice seedlings was confirmed.

Ultraviolet assisted liquid spray dielectric barrier discharge plasma-induced vapor generation for sensitive determination of arsenic by atomic fluorescence spectrometry

In this study, a novel sensitive method for As determination by atomic fluorescence spectrometry was developed based on UV-assisted liquid spray dielectric barrier discharge (UV-LSDBD) plasma-induced vapor generation. It was found that prior-UV irradiation greatly facilitates As vapor generation in LSDBD likely because of the increased generation of active substances and the formation of As intermediates with UV irradiation. The experimental conditions affecting the UV and LSDBD processes (such as formic acid concentration, irradiation time, the flow rates of sample, argon and hydrogen) were optimized in detail. Under the optimum conditions, As signal measured by LSDBD can be enhanced by about 16 times with UV irradiation. Furthermore, UV-LSDBD also offers much better tolerance to coexisting ions. The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.13 μg L^-1 for As, and the relative standard deviation of the repeated measurements was 3.2% (n = 7). The accuracy and effectiveness of this new method were further verified by the analysis of simulated natural water reference sample and real water samples. In this work, UV irradiation was utilized for the first time as an enhancement strategy for PIVG, which opens a new approach for developing green and efficient vapor generation methods.

Influence of Cocatalysts (Ni, Co, and Cu) and Synthesis Method on the Photocatalytic Activity of Exfoliated Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Hydrogen Production

Exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (ex-g-CN) was synthesized and loaded with non-noble metals (Ni, Cu, and Co). The synthesized catalysts were tested for hydrogen production using a 300-W Xe lamp equipped with a 395 nm cutoff filter. A noncommercial double-walled quartz-glass reactor irradiated from the side was used with a 1 g/L catalyst in 20 mL of a 10 vol% triethanolamine aqueous solution. For preliminary screening, the metal-loaded ex-g-CN was synthesized using the incipient wetness impregnation method. The highest hydrogen production was observed on the Ni-loaded ex-g-CN, which was selected to assess the impact of the synthesis method on hydrogen production. Ni-loaded ex-g-CN was synthesized using different synthesis methods: incipient wetness impregnation, colloidal deposition, and precipitation deposition. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, and transmission electron microscopy. The Ni-loaded ex-g-CN synthesized using the colloidal method performed best with a hydrogen production rate of 43.6 µmol h^-1 g^-1. By contrast, the catalysts synthesized using the impregnation and precipitation methods were less active, with 28.2 and 10.1 µmol h^-1 g^-1, respectively. The hydrogen production performance of the suspended catalyst (440 µmol m^-2 g^-1) showed to be superior to that of the corresponding immobilized catalyst (236 µmol m^-2 g^-1).

Recent Developments in Heterogeneous Photocatalysts with Near-Infrared Response

Photocatalytic technology has been considered as an efficient protocol to drive chemical reactions in a sustainable and green way. With the assistance of semiconductor-based materials, heterogeneous photocatalysis converts solar energy directly into chemical energy that can be readily stored. It has been employed in several fields including CO2 reduction, H2O splitting, and organic synthesis. Given that near-infrared (NIR) light occupies 47% of sunlight, photocatalytic systems with a NIR response are gaining more and more attention. To enhance the solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency, precise regulation of the symmetric/asymmetric nanostructures and band structures of NIR-response photocatalysts is indispensable. Under the irradiation of NIR light, the symmetric nano-morphologies (e.g., rod-like core-shell shape), asymmetric electronic structures (e.g., defect levels in band gap) and asymmetric heterojunctions (e.g., PN junctions, semiconductor-metal or semiconductor-dye composites) of designed photocatalytic systems play key roles in promoting the light absorption, the separation of electron/hole pairs, the transport of charge carriers to the surface, or the rate of surface photocatalytic reactions. This review will comprehensively analyze the four main synthesis protocols for the fabrication of NIR-response photocatalysts with improved reaction performance. The design methods involve bandgap engineering for the direct utilization of NIR photoenergy, the up-conversion of NIR light into ultraviolet/visible light, and the photothermal effect by converting NIR photons into local heat. Additionally, challenges and perspectives for the further development of heterogeneous photocatalysts with NIR response are also discussed based on their potential applications.

Efficient NO removal and photocatalysis mechanism over Bi-metal@Bi2O2[BO2(OH)] with oxygen vacancies

Photocatalysis technology prevails as a feasible option for air pollution control, in which high-efficiency charge separation and effective pollutant activation are the crucial issues. Here, this work designed Bi-metal@ Bi₂O₂[BO₂(OH)] with oxygen vacancies (OVs) catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation of NO under visible light, to shed light on the above two processes. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that a unique electron transfer covalent loop（[Bi₂O₂]²⁺ → Bi-metal → O^2-）can be formed during the reaction to guide the directional transfer of carriers, significantly improving the charge separation efficiency and the yield of active oxygen species. Simultaneously, the defect levels served by OVs also play a part. During the NO purification process, in-situ DRIFTS assisted with DFT calculations reveal that Bi metals could be functioned as electron donors to activate NO molecules and form NO^-, a key intermediate. This induces a new reaction path of NO → NO^- → NO₃^- to achieve the harmless conversion of NO, effectively restraining the generation of noxious intermediates (NO₂, N₂O₄). It is expected that this study would inspire the design of more artful photocatalysts for effective charge transfer and safe pollutants purification.

Enabling High Loading in Single-Atom Catalysts on Bare Substrate with Chemical Scissors by Saturating the Anchoring Sites

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts often exhibit high catalytic performances, but the metal loading density must be kept low to avoid the formation of metal nanoparticles, making it difficult to improve the overall activity. Diverse strategies based on creating more anchoring sites (ASs) have been adopted to elevate the loading density. One problem of such traditional methods is that the single atoms always gather together before the saturation of all ASs. Here, a chemical scissors strategy is developed by selectively removing unwanted metallic materials after excessive loading. Different from traditional ways, the chemical scissors strategy places more emphasis on the accurate matching between the strength of etching agent and the bond energies of metal-metal/metal-substrate, thus enabling a higher loading up to 2.02 wt% even on bare substrate without any pre-treatment (the bare substrate without any pre-treatment generally only has a few ASs for single atom loading). It can be inferred that by combining with other traditional methods which can create more ASs, the loading could be further increased by saturating ASs. When used for CH₃ OH generation via photocatalytic CO₂ reduction, the as-made single-atom catalyst exhibits impressive catalytic activity of 597.8 ± 144.6 µmol h^-1 g^-1 and selectivity of 81.3 ± 3.8%.

Recent progress of silver-containing photocatalysts for water disinfection under visible light irradiation: A review

Photocatalysis has emerged as an environmentally friendly approach for microbial disinfection. The development of visible-light-driven (VLD) photocatalysts for water pollution remediation is imperative, considering that visible light constitutes a substantial fraction of the solar spectrum. The modification of photocatalysts by Ag/AgX (X = Cl, Br, I) deposition can be used to improve photocatalytic efficiencies. This is achieved by preventing photogenerated electron-hole pairs recombination through electron trapping mechanisms. With the introduction of silver NPs, visible light absorption can also be increased through its SPR enhancement. Silver also possesses excellent antimicrobial properties. Consequently, a novel class of Ag/AgX-containing hybrid materials has recently emerged as a promising candidate for water disinfection. This review summarizes the latest advances in the synthesis of Ag/AgX-containing photocatalysts using various synthetic methods. The microbial disinfection efficiencies of the as-prepared materials, the main reactive oxygen species and disinfection mechanisms are also reviewed in detail. Finally, some areas that need to be improved are discussed along with new insights as perspectives for future developments in this field.

Efficient photocatalytic toluene degradation over heterojunction of GQDs@BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets with selective benzoic acid activation

Photocatalytic toluene degradation has attracted tremendous attention because of the growing environmental problem. However, conventional photocatalytic materials used for toluene degradation usually suffer from low carrier separation efficiency and poor stability which will degrade the catalytic performance. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel heterostructure of GQDs@BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets where the GQDs can rapidly capture and transport photogenerated electrons for effective charge separation, promoting the generation of more reactive oxygen species (·O₂^- and ·OH radicals) for toluene degradation. In situ DRIFTS measurement and theoretical calculation are performed to unveil the reaction intermediates and the underlying toluene oxidation mechanism. The GQDs@BiOCl heterojunction could facilitate the adsorption and conversion of toluene and the reaction intermediates. Especially, the heterojunction greatly enhances the activation and conversion of benzoic acid and thus expedites the complete toluene degradation. This work presents a new insight on the design of high-performance photocatalysts for efficient degradation of typical air pollutants.
