A millimeter-sized negatively charged polymer embedded with molybdenum disulfide nanosheets for efficient removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Competitive adsorption of heavy metals onto xanthate-modified sludge hydrochar and its solidification as secondary minerals

In this study, a sulfur-modified magnetic hydrochar was synthesized by grafting thiol-containing groups onto the sludge-derived hydrochar. The modified hydrochar exhibited effective adsorption of Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ over a wide pH range and in the presence of coexisting ions, and showed almost no secondary leaching in three acidic solutions. In the mult-metal ion system, the modified hydrochar exhibited maximum adsorption capacities were 39.38, 105.74, 26.53, and 38.11 mg g-1 for Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+, respectively. However, the binding capacity and adsorption amount of modified hydrochar for metal ions were lower in the mult-metal ion system compared to the unit-metal ion system. Notably, Pb2+ showed a strong inhibitory effect on the adsorption of other heavy metal ions by modified hydrochar due to strong competition for xanthate functional groups. The Pb2+ occupied the xanthate and native functional groups (-OH, -NH2, and Fe-O etc.), leaving only a small amount of adsorption sites for Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+. Simulation results further supported these findings, indicating that Pb2+ had the highest density profiles near the four functional groups, and the density profiles of the four heavy metals near the xanthate functional groups were greater compared to the other three functional groups. Furthermore, the SEM-EDS, TOF-SIMI, and XPS results indicated that modified hydrochar achieved excellent mineral binding mainly through electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and chelation. Overall, these results highlight the sulfur-modified magnetic hydrochar as a highly efficient adsorbent for heavy metals in environmental applications.

Efficient Removal and Recovery of Ag from Wastewater Using Charged Polystyrene-Polydopamine Nanocoatings and Their Sustainable Catalytic Application in 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

This study addresses the long-standing challenges of removing and recovering trace silver (Ag) ions from wastewater while promoting their sustainable catalysis utilization. We innovatively developed a composite material by combining charged sulfonated polystyrene (PS) with a PDA coating. This composite serves a dual purpose: effectively removing and recovering trace Ag+ from wastewater and enabling reused Ag for sustainable applications, particularly in the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The PS-PDA demonstrated exceptional selectivity to trace Ag+ recycling, which is equal to 14 times greater than the commercial ion exchanger. We emphasize the distinct roles of different charged functional groups in Ag+ removal and catalytic reduction performance. The negatively charged SO3H groups exhibited the remarkable ability to rapidly enrich trace Ag ions from wastewater, with a capacity 2-3 times higher than that of positively-N+(CH3)3Cl and netural-CH2Cl-modified composites; this resulted in an impressive 96% conversion of 4-NP to 4-AP within just 25 min. The fixed-bed application further confirmed the effective treatment capacity of approximately 4400 L of water per kilogram of adsorbent, while maintaining an extremely low effluent Ag+ concentration of less than 0.1 mg/L. XPS investigations provided valuable insights into the conversion of Ag+ ions into metallic Ag through the enticement of negatively charged SO3H groups and the in situ reduction facilitated by PDA. This breakthrough not only facilitates the efficient extraction of Ag from wastewater but also paves the way for its environmentally responsible utilization in catalytic reactions.

Fabrication of Iron-Containing Biochar by One-Step Ball Milling for Cr(VI) and Tetracycline Removal from Wastewater

Simple ball milling technology can simultaneously improve the adsorption performance of adsorbents for heavy metals and organic pollutants and has attracted increasing attention. Iron-modified biochar (Fe@MBC) was prepared by one-step ball milling, and the characterization results proved that FeCl3 was successfully loaded on biochar. The removal rates of Cr(VI) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) by Fe@MBC were increased by 88.27% and 82.64% compared with BC. The average pore size, oxygen-containing functional groups and graphitization degree of Fe@MBC are higher than those of BC, which is more conducive to promoting adsorption. The adsorption isotherms show that the adsorption of Cr(VI) and TC on the Fe@MBC surface conforms to the Langmuir type of single-layer adsorption and the Freundlich model of multilayer adsorption, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) and TC are 25.46 and 66.91 mg·g-1, respectively. Kinetic experiments show that the adsorption process is more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model of chemical adsorption. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) and TC on the Fe@MBC surface is a spontaneous endothermic process that becomes more obvious as the temperature increases. The increase in solution pH has a significant impact on the removal rate of Fe@MBC. When the pH value increased from 3 to 11, the adsorption rates decreased by 53.74% and 17.16%, respectively. The presence of PO43-, CO32-, K+, and Cu2+ significantly affects the adsorption of TC by Fe@MBC, and PO43- and CO32- also affect the adsorption of Cr(VI). Mechanistic studies show that ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, pore filling, and hydrogen bonding contribute to the removal of Cr(VI) and TC by Fe@MBC. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) also involves complexation and redox reactions, and the removal mechanism of TC involves π-π bonds and van der Waals forces. The results show that Fe@MBC is a green and efficient adsorbent.

High performance forward osmosis membrane with ultrathin hydrophobic nanofibrous interlayer

The novel thin film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membrane with electrospinning nanofibers as support layer can alleviate internal concentration polarization (ICP). While the macropores of the nanofiber support layer cause defects in the polyamide (PA) layer. Therefore, hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fine nanofibers were used as an interlayer to modulate the process of interfacial polymerization (IP) in this study. The results showed that the introduction of the interlayer improved the hydrophobicity of the support layer for achieving uniform, thin and defect-free selective polyamide (PA) layer. The water flux of TFC-PVDF was 58.26 LMH in the FO mode of 2 M NaCl, which was two times higher than that of the unmodified FO membrane. Lower reverse salt flux (4.91 gMH) and structural parameter (179.43 μm) alleviated the ICP. In addition, TFC-PVDF membrane showed good anti-fouling performance for SA (flux recovery ratio of 93.97%) due to high hydrophilicity, low zeta potential and low roughness. This study provides an easy and promising method to prepare defect-free PA selective layer on the macropores nanofiber support layer. The novel FO membrane shows high desalination performance and anti-fouling properties.

Adsorption of Rhodamine B and Pb(II) from aqueous solution by MoS2 nanosheet modified biochar: Fabrication, performance, and mechanisms

Mediated by polydopamine, MoS2 nanosheets were immobilized on the porous biochar derived from fungus residue, forming a novel biochar-based nanocomposite (MoS2-PDA@FRC) for the removal of Rhodamine B(RhB) and Pb(II) from water. Utilizing MoS2 nanosheets with abundant active adsorption sites, MoS2-PDA@FRC showed higher adsorption capacities than raw biochar, with 2.76 and 1.78 times higher capacities for RhB and Pb(II) respectively. MoS2-PDA@FRC also exhibited fast adsorption kinetics for RhB (120 min) and Pb (180 min) removal, as well as satisfactory adsorption selectivity in the presence of coexisting substances. The underlying removal mechanism was explored via Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Furthermore, during cyclic adsorption-regeneration and the fixed-bed adsorption experiments, the nanocomposite removed RhB and Pb(II) with high effectiveness and stability. Collectively, the results demonstrated the bright prospects of MoS2-PDA@FRC as a highly efficient decontamination agent of RhB and Pb(II) from water.

Facile green preparation of single- and two-component modified activated carbon fibers for efficient trace heavy metals removal from drinking water

Trace heavy metals exist in drinking water, having great adverse effects on human health and making it a huge challenge to remove. Herein, novel materials have been prepared by a simple and green method using single- (polydopamine (PDA) or 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonic sodium (DMPS)) (PDA-OACF or DMPS-OACF) and two-component (PDA and DMPS) (DMPS-PDA-OACF) functionalized activated carbon fibers pretreated by hydrogen peroxide for the removal of trace heavy metals. The as-prepared DMPS-OACF (7.5,20) under DMPS addition of 7.5 mg and sonication time of 20 min retained large specific surface area, micro-mesoporous structure and rich functional groups and showed better adsorption performance for trace lead and mercury. It also exhibited wide applicable ranges of pH (3.50-10.50) and concentration (50-1136 μg L^-1), rapid adsorption kinetics, and excellently selective removal performance for trace lead. The maximum lead adsorption capacity reached 16.03 mg g^-1 when the effluent lead concentration met World Health Organization (WHO) standard and the adsorbent can be regenerated by EDTA solution. The fitting results of adsorption kinetics and isotherm models revealed that the lead adsorption process was multi-site adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces and chemical adsorption. The excellent adsorption properties for trace heavy metals were attributed that the sulfur/oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups boosted diffusion and adsorption by electrostatic attraction and coordination, suggesting that DMPS-OACF (7.5,20) has great application potential in the removal of trace heavy metals.

Cost-effective microwave-assisted hydrothermal rapid synthesis of analcime-activated carbon composite from coal gangue used for Pb2+ adsorption

Heavy metal contamination of water has brought about serious harm to the ecological environment and also threatens human health to a certain extent. In this study, a composite structure comprised of analcime-activated carbon (ANA-AC) was synthesized in situ via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using coal gangue (CG) for the potential treatment of Pb²⁺ from aqueous solution. The products were systematically characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The results showed that activated carbon was successfully integrated with the structure of the analcime and the BET surface area of the ANA-AC (20.82 m²/g) was much greater than that of the CG (9.33 m²/g) and ANA (10.04 m²/g) independently. The relationship between Pb²⁺ adsorption capacity and the initial solution concentration, adsorbent dosages, contact time, pH, and temperature was studied. Under optimal conditions (Pb²⁺  = 100 mg/L, dosage = 0.1 g, contact time = 6 h, pH = 5.4-6, temperature = 298 K), the maximum adsorption capacity of ANA-AC can reach 100%, which was higher than that of CG and ANA. The Langmuir isotherm model was in good agreement with the data obtained for Pb²⁺ adsorption, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for describing the experimental data, showing that chemical adsorption was the controlling step during the adsorption process. In summary, analcime-activated carbon composite prepared from coal gangue could be used as an appropriate adsorbent for Pb²⁺ adsorption from an aqueous solution.

Two-step ball milling-assisted synthesis of N-doped biochar loaded with ferrous sulfide for enhanced adsorptive removal of Cr(Ⅵ) and tetracycline from water

Nitrogen-doped biochar loaded with FeS (FeS@NBC_BM) was synthesized by two-step ball milling processes. Characterization results revealed that N-doping process successfully introduced pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic N structures, and FeS was subsequently embedded in N-doped biochar (NBC_BM). The resultant FeS@NBC_BM presented predominant adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (194.69 mg/g) and tetracycline (TC, 371.29 mg/g) compared with BC (27.28 and 37.89 mg/g) and NBC_BM (71.26 and 81.26 mg/g). In addition, the Cr(VI)/TC elimination process by FeS@NBC_BM was basically stable with multiple co-existing ions with slight decrease on adsorption performance after three desorption-regeneration cycles. Most importantly, FeS@NBC_BM was found to achieve Cr(VI) elimination not only by electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and complexation, but also by electrons-triggered reduction provided by different species of N, Fe²⁺ as well as S(Ⅱ). Meantime, pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking interactions were demonstrated to contribute to TC adsorption. These results suggested the co-modification of N-doping and FeS loading by ball milling as an innovative decorating method for biochar to adsorptive purification of Cr(VI) and TC-contaminated water.

Concurrent elimination and stepwise recovery of Pb(II) and bisphenol A from water using β-cyclodextrin modified magnetic cellulose: adsorption performance and mechanism investigation

Coexistence of heavy metals and endocrine disrupting compounds in polluted water with competitive adsorption behavior necessitates design of tailored adsorbents. In this work, β-cyclodextrin modified magnetic rice husk-derived cellulose (β-CD@MRHC) which can provide independent functional sites for effectively binding the above two types of contaminants was synthesized and used for Pb(II) and BPA elimination in both unit and multivariate systems. Characterizations results confirmed successful β-CD grafting and Fe₃O₄ loading, and the β-CD@MRHC had excellent magnetic property for its effectively recovery from water, which was not affected by the adsorption of pollutants. The β-CD@MRHC possessed superior adsorption performance with maximal Pb(II)/BPA uptake of 266.2 or 412.8 mg/g, severally, and the adsorption equilibrium was fleetly reached in 30 and 7.5 min. Moreover, the β-CD@MRHC could accomplish synergetic Pb(II) and BPA elimination through averting their competitive behaviors owing to diverse capture mechanisms for Pb(II) (ion exchange, complexation and electrostatic attraction) and BPA (hydrogen bonding and host-guest inclusion). Furthermore, after three cycles of step-wise desorption, the binding of Pb(II) as well as BPA byβ-CD@MRHC dropped slightly in dualistic condition. In summary, β-CD@MRHC was a promising tailored adsorbent to practical application for simultaneously removing heavy metals and organic matters from wastewater with high-performance magnetic recovery.

Preparation and characterization of Schiff-base modified Fe3O4 hybrid material and its selective adsorption for aqueous Hg2

A Fe₃O₄ hybrid material (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-S₂) modified by Schiff-base was prepared by grafting methyl acrylate (MA), ethylenediamine (EDA), and salicylaldehyde (SA) to the prepared magnetic hybrid material (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-NH₂) successively; what's more, the structure was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and VSM. The results showed that the Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-S₂ has an obvious core-shell structure and a saturation magnetization of 45.9 emu/g. Study on the adsorption of aqueous heavy metal ions showed that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-S₂ posed selective adsorption for Hg²⁺ with the saturated adsorption capacity of 362 mg/g (1.12 mmol/g), which was superior to Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-NH₂, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-HO-S, and other adsorbents, at the condition of pH = 6, 45℃, the adsorption capacity remained 89% after 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption; what is more, adsorption equilibrium was reached at about 300 min, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model; in addition, pseudo-second-order model could be well described the adsorption kinetic process of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-S₂ to Hg²⁺. The adsorption mechanism demonstrated that the N atoms of Schiff-base were mainly contributed to the adsorption of Hg²⁺; what is more, the N atom of tertiary amine and the O atoms of hydroxy and carbonyl also help to the adsorption of Hg²⁺.

The potential of green biochar generated from biogas residue as a heterogeneous persulfate activator and its non-radical degradation pathways: Adsorption and degradation of tetracycline

Advanced oxidation aided by sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) is an effective option for the treatment of refractory pollutants from aqueous solutions. In this work, a metal-free biochar catalyst was prepared using pyrolyzed biogas residue as the raw material. The biogas residue carbon (BRC) obtained at 800 °C showed excellent catalytic activity and adsorption capacity for the removal of tetracycline (TC) with 97.9% of removal efficiency. Such performance is accounted for by the rich pores and accelerated electron transformability conferred by its defect structure with the crucial role of pyrolysis temperature in regulating catalyst properties. The BRC-800/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system worked predominantly through non-radical pathways with high stability/recyclability without being interfered by organic/inorganic compounds in an actual water environment. The exceelent removal performance is also supported by the kinetic reaction rate of the BRC-800/PMS system as estimated to be 0.03017 min^-1. This work provides a simple and effective path for modifying biogas residue waste for versatile applications.

Facile synthesis of porous MoS2nanofibers for efficient drug delivery and cancer treatment

Porous MoS₂nanofibers were synthesized by electroplating and post-annealing and applied in a responsive drug delivery system. The one-dimensional (1D) MoS₂nanofibers displayed a high specific surface area, controllable morphology, and uniform size, serving as a promising drug carrier for chemotherapy. After surface modification with polyethylene glycol (PEG) through PEGylation, the MoS₂/PEG composite displayed excellent physical/chemical stability and biocompatibility. More importantly, MoS₂/PEG loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) exhibited a controllable release responsive to pH and near-infrared (NIR) irradiation and demonstrated precise DOX dose release. Such remarkable anticancer effects were mainly attributed to outstanding photothermal performance and stability of porous MoS₂nanofibers. This work offered a new opportunity of employing porous MoS₂nanofibers as drug carriers for effective cancer chemotherapy.
