Compared catalytic properties of OMS-2-based nanocomposites for the degradation of organic pollutants

Challenges and opportunities in the selective degradation of organophosphorus herbicide glyphosate

The wide and continuous usage of glyphosate in the environment poses a serious threat to biological systems. Besides the accumulation of glyphosate in vivo, a growing body of research has revealed that aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), the main degradation intermediate of glyphosate, has significant environmental and biological influences by inducing chromosome aberration of fish and canceration of human erythrocyte. Therefore, the development of new strategies avoiding the generation of the toxic AMPA intermediate during the full degradation of glyphosate is becoming of high importance. Herein, we provide a mini-review that includes the most recent advances in the selective degradation of glyphosate avoiding the generation of AMPA in the last several years from 2018. The developments of the selective degradation of glyphosate, highlighting its synthesis and selective degradation mechanism, are summarized here. This review intends to attract more attention from researchers toward this area and to emphasize the recent developments of selective degradation of glyphosate in highlighting future challenges.

Ag-embedded manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Ag-OMS-2) nano-rods as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for hydration of nitriles to amides in aqueous solution

Silver-embedded manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Ag-OMS-2) nano-rods were synthesized using a pre-incorporation approach, and unambiguously characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A highly uniform distribution of Ag nanoparticles embedded in the porous structure of OMS-2, was found to be in favor of high catalytic activity of the composite for hydration of nitriles to corresponding amides in aqueous solution. By using a catalyst dosage of 30 mg per mmol of substrate, in the temperature range of 80-100 °C, and reaction times of 4-9 h, excellent yields (73-96%) of the desired amides (13 examples) were obtained. Also, the catalyst was easy to recycle, and showed a slight decrease in efficiency after six consecutive runs.

Enhanced degradation and mineralization of estriol over ZrO2/OMS-2 nanocomposite: Kinetics, pathway and mechanism

Although remarkable progresses have been achieved in the exploration of new and efficient catalytic systems for efficient degradation of estriol, there are only very few available reports providing high mineralization of estriol. Hence, it is still a serious challenge to develop the novel and efficient methods for enhanced degradation and mineralization of estriol due to its serious threat to environment and human health. Herein, this study proposes a series of ZrO₂ modified manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (ZrO₂/OMS-2) nanocomposites as efficient catalysts for enhanced degradation and mineralization of estriol via PMS activation at 30 °C. Among them, ZrO₂/OMS-2-27% provided the highest degradation efficiency (95%) and mineralization degrees (70.1%), which exceeded most reported catalytic systems, in the catalytic degradation of estriol. These quenching tests and EPR analysis had confirmed that O₂•^- and ¹O₂ were primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ZrO₂/OMS-2-27%/PMS system, contrary to the OMS-2/PMS system for which SO₄•^- and OH• are primary ROS. This might be due to the abundant O-containing surface functional groups of ZrO₂/OMS-2-27%. This work not only provides a facile and high-efficiency methodology for the construction of Mn-based nanomaterial, but also proposes a new and efficient nano-catalyst for estriol removal.

Sulfite activation by cobaltosic oxide nanohydrangeas for tetracycline degradation: Performance, degradation pathways and mechanism

Sulfite has been used as a classic reductant for the dehalogenation and reduction of organic compounds for a long time, it is recently deemed as a promising alternative (for persulfate) to generate sulfate radical for wastewater treatment due to its low price and eco-toxicity. In contrast with the enormous work developed in the field of tetracycline (TC) degradation via PMS activization, sulfite activization could play a important role in TC degradation but there is only very few available reports in this area. Herein, the novel and efficient CoNHs nanocatalyst is designed and developed, via immobilization of hydrangea-shaped Co₃O₄ nanoparticles onto graphitic carbon nanosheet (GCN), for the degradation of tetracycline via sulfite activation. The detailed characterizations have confirmed that CoNHs possesses a nanohydrangea-shaped structure with high microporosity. The comparison with other supports (such as CeO₂ and MoS₂), CoNHs provides the highest degradation efficiency in TC degradation, due to the synergistic effect between Co₃O₄ and GCN. Free radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis confirm that SO₄•^- and O₂•^- are major reactive oxygen species in the CoNHs/sulfite system. This work could provide a simple, economical and durable cobalt-based catalyst for organic wastewater treatment via sulfite activation.

Turning waste into wealth: facile and green synthesis of carbon nanodots from pollutants and applications to bioimaging

In an effort to turn waste into wealth, Reactive Red 2 (RR2), a common and refractory organic pollutant in industrial wastewater, has been employed for the first time as a precursor to synthesize carbon nanodots (CNDs) by a facile, green and low-cost route, without utilization of any strong acids or other oxidizers. The detailed characterizations have confirmed that the synthesized CNDs exhibit good water dispersibility, with a mean particle size of 2.43 nm and thickness of 1-3 layers. Importantly, the excellent fluorescence properties and much reduced biotoxicity of the CNDs confer its potential applications in further biological imaging, which has been successfully verified in both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (zebrafish) model systems. Thus, it is demonstrated that the synthesized CNDs exhibit nice biocompatibility and fluorescence properties for bioimaging. This work not only provides a novel economical and environmentally friendly approach in recycling a chemical pollutant, but also greatly promotes the potential application of CNDs in biological imaging.

Removal of a reactive dye from simulated textile wastewater by environmentally friendly oxidant calcium peroxide

In the present study, calcium peroxide (CaO2) was used separately for potential application as an environmentally friendly and low-cost oxidant for the removal of a textile dye ‘Reactive Black 5’ (RB5) from simulated textile wastewater containing auxiliary chemicals of textile production. The specific morphology, elemental analysis, particle size distribution, specific surface area, identification of crystalline phases and surface functional groups of the synthesized CaO2 were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), laser diffraction (LD), Brunaure–Emmett–Teller method (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR), respectively. X-ray Diffraction analysis confirmed the synthesized oxidant as CaO2 with the tetragonal crystalline structure. The signal corresponded to a bending vibration of O–Ca–O was detected in the fingerprint region of the FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of various independent parameters such as contact time, pH, initial RB5 concentration and CaO2 dosage on decolorization were investigated. The results of the study showed that pH, initial dye concentration and the CaO2 amounts have significant effects on removal of the RB5. The optimum pH was determined 7 for the removal of RB5 by CaO2. 2.0 g CaO2 was found to be sufficient for the removal of 300 mg/L RB5 with 96.93% removal efficiency. Also 82.8% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency from simulated textile wastewater (STW) was obtained by 2.0 g CaO2. The results of the present study showed that the CaO2 can be used as an environmentally friendly and low-cost oxidant for effective removal of reactive textile dyes.
