Self-assembled lamellar nanochannels in polyoxometalate-polymer nanocomposites for proton conduction

Self-Assembled Construction of Ion-Selective Nanobarriers in Electrolyte Membranes for Redox Flow Batteries

Ion-conducting membranes (ICMs) with high selectivity are important components in redox flow batteries. However it is still a challenge to break the trade-off between ion conductivity and ion selectivity, which can be resolved by the regulation of their nanostructures. Here, polyoxometalate (POM)-hybridized block copolymers (BCPs) are used as self-assembled additives to construct proton-selective nanobarriers in the ICM matrix to improve the microscopic structures and macroscopic properties of ICMs. Benefiting from the co-assembly behavior of BCPs and POMs and their cooperative noncovalent interactions with the polymer matrix, ∼50 nm ellipsoidal functional nanoassemblies with hydrophobic vanadium-shielding cores and hydrophilic proton-conducting shells are constructed in the sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix, which leads to an overall enhancement of proton conductivity, proton selectivity, and cell performance. These results present a self-assembly route to construct functional nanostructures for the modification of polymer electrolyte membranes toward emerging energy technologies.

Semi-Solid Supramolecular Ionic Network Electrolytes Formed by Zwitterionic Liquids and Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters for High Proton Conduction

Flexible electrolytes with solid self-supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola-type zwitterionic liquids is reported. The resulting self-supporting electrolytes possess semi-solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems.

Cerium-Encapsulated SbIII-SeIV-Templating Polyoxotungstate for Electrochemically Sensing Human Multidrug Resistance Gene Segment

A tower-like SbIII-SeIV-templating polyoxotungstate [H2N(CH3)2]12Na7H3[Ce0.5/Na0.5(H2O)5]2[SbSe2W21O75]2·50H2O (1) was synthesized, whose skeleton is assembled from two prolonged lacunary Dawson [SbSe2W21O75]13- units and two [Ce0.5/Na0.5(H2O)5]2+ linkers. The uncommon [SbSe2W21O75]13- unit can be viewed as a combination of one [SeW6O21]2- group grafted onto a trivacant Dawson [SbSeW15O54]11- subunit. The conductive composite 1-Au@rGO containing 1, gold nanoparticles, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was conveniently prepared, using which the 1-Au@rGO-based electrochemical genosensor was constructed for detecting human multidrug resistance gene segment. This work enriches structural types of dual-heteroatom-inserted polyoxometalates and promotes the application of polyoxometalates in genosensors.

Ionic-Nanophase Hybridization of Nafion by Supramolecular Patching for Enhanced Proton Selectivity in Redox Flow Batteries

Nafion, as the mostly used proton exchange membrane material in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), encounters serious vanadium permeation problems due to the large size difference between its anionic nanophase (3-5 nm) and cationic vanadium ions (∼0.6 nm). Bulk hybridization usually suppresses the vanadium permeation at the expense of proton conductivity since conventional additives tend to randomly agglomerate and damage the nanophase continuity from unsuitable sizes and intrinsic incompatibility. Here, we report the ionic-nanophase hybridization strategy of Nafion membranes by using fluorinated block copolymers (FBCs) and polyoxometalates (POMs) as supramolecular patching additives. The cooperative noncovalent interactions among Nafion, interfacial-active FBCs, and POMs can construct a 1 nm-shrunk ionic nanophase with abundant proton transport sites, preserved continuity, and efficient vanadium screeners, which leads to a comprehensive enhancement in proton conductivity, selectivity, and VRFB performance. These results demonstrate the intriguing potential of the supramolecular patching strategy in precisely tuning nanostructured electrolyte membranes for improved performance.

Supramolecular Assembly and Microscopic Dynamics Modulation of Nanoscale Inorganic Cryptand and Polymer Complex for Versatile Design of Flexible Single-Ion Conductors

The popular design of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) from the chain relaxation of polymers faces the trade-offs among ion conductivity, stability, and processability. Herein, 2 nm inorganic cryptand molecules with the capability to carry different types of cations, including Ag⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Ca²⁺, are complexed with cationic polymers via ionic interaction, respectively, and the hybrid materials further phase separate into lamellar or hexagonal columnar structures. The successful establishment of ordered structures with ion channels from the packing of inorganic cryptands confers SSEs' excellent ionic conductivity to versatile types of cations. Meanwhile, suggested from the combination of broad dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and thermal analysis, the fast chain relaxation can activate the dynamics of inorganic cryptand molecules and facilitate the ion hopping process in ion channels. The supramolecular interaction in the complex enables the highly flexible physical appearance for defect-free contact with electrodes as well as cost-effective processability and recyclability.

Supramolecular Anchoring of Polyoxometalate Amphiphiles into Nafion Nanophases for Enhanced Proton Conduction

Advanced proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging sustainable energy technology. However, the further improvement of commercial perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs represented by Nafion is hindered by the lack of precise modification strategy due to their chemical inertness and low compatibility. Here, we report the robust assembly of polyethylene glycol grafted polyoxometalate amphiphile (GSiW₁₁) into the ionic nanophases of Nafion, which largely enhances the comprehensive performance of Nafion. GSiW₁₁ can coassemble with Nafion through multiple supramolecular interactions and realize a stable immobilization. The incorporation of GSiW₁₁ can increase the whole proton content in the system and induce the hydrated ionic nanophase to form a wide channel for proton transport; meanwhile, GSiW₁₁ can reinforce the Nafion ionic nanophase by noncovalent cross-linking. Based on these synergistic effects, the hybrid PEMs show multiple enhancements in proton conductivity, tensile strength, and fuel cell power density, which are all superior to the pristine Nafion. This work demonstrates the intriguing advantage of molecular nanoclusters as supramolecular enhancers to develop high-performance electrolyte materials.

Hybrid Materials Based on Keggin Phosphotungstate and Bipyridine with Valuable Hydrophobic and Redox Properties

A thorough investigation of two novel hybrid materials, namely, (2,2'-Hbpy)₃[PW₁₂O₄₀] and (4,4'-H₂bpy)_1.5[PW₁₂O₄₀]·1.5H₂O built from Keggin phosphotungstic acid (PTA) and bipyridine, describes the impact of bipyridine isomers in their formation and physicochemical properties. The hybrids' formation was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, while infrared spectroscopy (IR) proved the polyoxometalate (POM) structural preservation. The stoichiometric composition and thermal stability of the hybrids were solved by thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry, which also revealed newly acquired hydrophobic properties. Raman and IR spectroscopies demonstrated that the POM skeleton units in both hybrids were distorted compared to the POM in PTA, which induced a decrease of their reduction potentials as observed by diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (DR-UV-vis). The hybrids' acidity was assessed by ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, which showed no remaining acid sites compared to the strong acidic character of the pristine PTA. The properties of the hybrids were tested in the epoxidation of cyclooctene in the presence of H₂O₂. The reaction was boosted when the hybrids were pre-activated with H₂O₂.

Polyoxometalates as chemically and structurally versatile components in self-assembled materials

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are anionic molecular metal oxides with expansive diversity in terms of their composition, structure, nuclearity and charge. Within this vast collection of compounds are dominant structural motifs (POM platforms), that are amenable to significant chemical tuning with minimal perturbation of the inorganic oxide molecular structure. Consequently, this enables the systematic investigation of these compounds as inorganic additives within materials whereby structure and charge can be tuned independently i.e. [PW12O40]3- vs. [SiW12O40]4- while also investigating the impact of varying the charge balancing cations on self-assembly. The rich surface chemistry of POMs also supports their functionalisation by organic components to yield so-called inorganic-organic hybrids which will be the key focus of this perspective. We will introduce the modifications possible for each POM platform, as well as discussing the range of nanoparticles, microparticles and surfaces that have been developed using both surfactant and polymer building blocks. We will also illustrate important examples of POM-hybrids alongside their potential utility in applications such as imaging, therapeutic delivery and energy storage.

Hybrid Liquid-Crystalline Electrolytes with High-Temperature-Stable Channels for Anhydrous Proton Conduction

Modern electrochemical and electronic devices require advanced electrolytes. Liquid crystals have emerged as promising electrolyte candidates due to their good fluidity and long-range order. However, the mesophase of liquid crystals is variable upon heating, which limits their applications as high-temperature electrolytes, e.g., implementing anhydrous proton conduction above 100 °C. Here, we report a highly stable thermotropic liquid-crystalline electrolyte based on the electrostatic self-assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and zwitterionic polymer ligands. These electrolytes can form a well-ordered mesophase with sub-10 nm POM-based columnar domains, attributed to the dynamic rearrangement of polymer ligands on POM surfaces. Notably, POMs can serve as both electrostatic cross-linkers and high proton conductors, which enable the columnar domains to be high-temperature-stable channels for anhydrous proton conduction. These nanochannels can maintain constant columnar structures in a wide temperature range from 90 to 160 °C. This work demonstrates the unique role of POMs in developing high-performance liquid-crystalline electrolytes, which can provide a new route to design advanced ion transport systems for energy and electronic applications.

Nanostructured high-performance electrolyte membranes based on polymer network post-assembly for high-temperature supercapacitors

The development of high-temperature supercapacitors highly relies on the explore of stable polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with high ionic conductivities at high-temperature conditions. However, it is a challenge to achieve both high stability and high conductivity in a PEM at elevated temperatures. Herein, we report the fabrication of high-performance proton conductive PEMs suitable for high-temperature supercapacitors (HT-SCs), which is based on a post-assembly strategy to control the rearrangement of polymer networks in the PEMs. This strategy can create cross-linked PEMs with bicontinuous nanostructures, as well as highly stable and highly conductive features. Specifically, a series of bicontinuous PEMs are prepared by the controllable cross-linking of poly(ether-ether-ketone) and poly(4-vinylpyridine), followed by the inducement of phosphoric acid. These PEMs exhibit both a high proton conductivity of 70 mS cm^-1 and a high modulus of 39.3 MPa at 150 ℃, which can serve as high-performance electrolytes. The HT-SCs based on these PEMs display a specific capacitance of 138.0 F g^-1 and a high capacitance retention of 80.0% after 2500 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at 150 ℃, exhibiting excellent high-temperature capacitance and cycle stability. This post-assembly concept can provide a new route to design high-performance PEMs for HT-SC and other energy device applications.

Multifunctional Enhancement of Proton-Conductive, Stretchable, and Adhesive Performance in Hybrid Polymer Electrolytes by Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters

High ionic conductivity, good mechanical strength, strong electrode adhesion, and low volatilization are highly desired properties for flexible solid electrolytes. However, it is difficult to realize all these properties simultaneously, which needs a rational synergy of different electrolyte constituents. Here, we present the use of polyoxometalates as versatile enhancers to fabricate nonvolatile flexible hybrid polymer electrolytes with improved conductive, stretchable, and adhesive properties. These electrolytes are based on the molecular hybridization of a polyacrylate elastomer, phosphoric acid, and a commercial polyoxometalate H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ (PW). PW can serve as a nanosized plasticizer to favor the chain relaxation of polyacrylate and improve stretchability. Meanwhile, PW as a solid acid can increase the proton concentration and form a hybrid hydrogen-bonding network to facilitate proton conduction. Besides, the strong adsorption ability of PW on solid surfaces enables the electrolytes with enhanced adhesion. The hybrid electrolyte with 30 wt % PW shows a break stress of 0.28 MPa, a break elongation of 990%, and a conductivity of 0.01 S cm^-1 at 298 K, which are 1.8, 1.8, and 2.5 times higher compared to the case without PW, respectively. Moreover, PW enhances the adhesive strength of hybrid electrolytes on polypropylene, steel, and glass substrates. The flexible supercapacitors based on the hybrid electrolytes and polyaniline electrodes hold a stable electrode-electrolyte interface and exhibit a high specific capacitance of 592 mF cm^-2 and an excellent capacitance retention of 84% after 6000 charge-discharge cycles. These results demonstrate great potential of polyoxometalates as multifunctional enhancers to design hybrid electrolyte materials for energy and electronic applications.
