Emerging Trends of Carbon-Based Quantum Dots: Nanoarchitectonics and Applications

Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a fascinating class of advanced materials with a unique combination of optoelectronic, biocompatible, and catalytic characteristics, apt for a plethora of applications ranging from electronic to photoelectrochemical devices. Recent research works have established carbon-based QDs for those frontline applications through improvements in materials design, processing, and device stability. This review broadly presents the recent progress in the synthesis of carbon-based QDs, including carbon QDs, graphene QDs, graphitic carbon nitride QDs and their heterostructures, as well as their salient applications. The synthesis methods of carbon-based QDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of the dependence of the device performance on the intrinsic properties and nanostructures of carbon-based QDs, aiming to present the general strategies for device designing with optimal performance. Furthermore, diverse applications of carbon-based QDs are presented, with an emphasis on the relationship between band alignment, charge transfer, and performance improvement. Among the applications discussed in this review, much focus is given to photo and electrocatalytic, energy storage and conversion, and bioapplications, which pose a grand challenge for rational materials and device designs. Finally, a summary is presented, and existing challenges and future directions are elaborated.

A mucus-inspired solvent-free carbon dot-based nanofluid triggers significant tribological synergy for sulfonated h-BN reinforced epoxy composites

Nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites have attracted extensive attention in tribology; however, to date, it is still challenging to construct a favorable lubricating system with excellent compatibility, lubricity and durability using nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites. Herein, sulfonated boron nitride nano-sheets (h-BN@PSDA) are prepared and used as nano-fillers for epoxy resins (EPs), to improve friction and wear along with thermal conductivity. Furthermore, inspired by the lubricating principle and structure of snail mucus, a solvent-free carbon dot-based nanofluid (F-CDs) is fabricated and used for the first time as the lubricant for h-BN@PSDA/EPs. Both poly (4-styrene sulfonate) and polyether amine grafted on the surface of F-CDs contribute to branched structures and multiple interfacial absorption effects. Extraordinarily low friction and wear are detected after long-term sliding. The average coefficient of friction and wear rate of h-BN@PSDA/EPs composites are reduced by 95.25% and 99.42% respectively, in the presence of the F-CD nanofluid, compared to that of EPs. Besides, the added h-BN nano-sheets increase the thermal conductivity (TC) of EPs from 0.178 to 0.194 W (m-1 K-1). The distinguished lubrication performances are likely due to the formation of a hybrid nanostructure of 0D F-CDs and 2D h-BN@PSDA together with the "rolling-sliding" and "self-mending" effects of added F-CDs.

Facile Access to Fabricate Carbon Dots and Perspective of Large-Scale Applications

Carbon dots (CDs), fluorescent carbon nanoparticles with particle sizes < 10 nm, are constantly being developed for potential large-scale applications. Recently, methods allow CD synthesis to be carried out on large-scale preparation in a controlled fashion are potentially important for multiple disciplines, including bottom-up strategy, top-down method. In this review, the recent progresses in the research of the methods for large-scale production of CDs and their functionalization are summarized. Especially, the methods of CD synthesis, such as large-scale preparation, hydrothermal/solvothermal, microwave-assisted, magnetic hyperthermia microfluidic and other methods, along with functionalization of CDs, are summarized in detail. By promising applications of CDs, there are three aspects have been already reported, such as enhancing mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and energy storage. Also, future development of CDs is prospected.

Development of Doped Carbon Quantum Dot-Based Nanomaterials for Lubricant Additive Applications

The development of advanced lubricants is essential for the pursuit of energy efficiency and sustainable development. In order to improve the properties of lubricating fluids, high-performance lubricating additives are required. In recent research studies, carbon nanomaterials such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene have been examined as lubricating additives to water or oil. Lubricating oils are well known for the presence of additives, especially friction-reducers and anti-wear additives. As part of this work, we have studied the advancement in the research and development of carbon dot (CD)-based lubricant additives by presenting a number of several applications of CD-based additives. We have also highlighted the friction-reducing properties and anti-wear properties of CDs and their lubrication mechanism along with some challenges and future perspectives of CDs as an additive. CDs are carbon nanomaterials that are synthesized from single-atom-thick sheets containing a large number of oxygen-containing functional groups; they have gained increasing attention as friction-reducing and antiwear additives. CDs have gradually been revealed to have exceptional tribological properties, particularly acting as additives to lubricating base oils. In our final section, we discuss the main challenges, future research directions, and a number of suggestions for a complete functionalized or hybrid doped CD-based material.

Efficient and stable electrorheological fluids based on chestnut-like cobalt hydroxide coupled with surface-functionalized carbon dots

Intrinsically polarized electrorheological fluids (ERFs) have better thermal stability than ERFs with polar molecules, so they have a broader application prospect. However, the electrorheological efficiency of the common intrinsically polarized ERF is still lower than 1500, which is related to the poor wettability between polarized materials and the continuous phase. Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit good stability, semiconductor properties and low toxicity. We prepared biomimetic chestnut-like cobalt hydroxide coupled with surface-functionalized CD particles (Co(OH)₂@CDs) by a simple hydrothermal method. Then we prepared an ERF by mixing Co(OH)₂@CDs with silicone oil and studied the effect of CDs on its rheology and electrorheology properties. The synergistic effect of the lipophilic groups on the surface of CDs and the biomimetic chestnut-like structure makes Co(OH)₂@CDs exhibit good wettability with silicone oil, and the optimal zero-field viscosity of Co(OH)₂@CDs-ERF is only 0.46 Pa s (particle mass fraction of 40%). Exceptional electrorheological efficiency (about 10 000, shear rate 0.1 s^-1, 5 kV mm^-1) and dynamic shear stress stability of optimal Co(OH)₂@CDs-ERF can be attributed to the dielectric enhancement of the biomimetic chestnut-like structure coupled with the semiconductor properties of CDs. In addition, Co(OH)₂@CDs-ERF has excellent anti-settling performance, outstanding thermal stability and low current density.

Advanced Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is becoming an effective strategy for repairing cartilage damage. Synthesized nanocomposite hydrogels mimic the structure of natural cartilage extracellular matrices (ECMs), are biocompatible, and exhibit nano-bio effects in response to external stimuli. These inherent characteristics make nanocomposite hydrogels promising scaffold materials for cartilage tissue engineering. This review summarizes the advances made in the field of nanocomposite hydrogels for artificial cartilage. We discuss, in detail, their preparation methods and scope of application. The challenges involved for the application of hydrogel nanocomposites for cartilage repair are also highlighted.

Highly fluorescent carbon dots as novel theranostic agents for biomedical applications

As an emerging fluorescent nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) exhibit many attractive physicochemical features, including excellent photoluminescence properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity and the ability to maintain the unique properties of the raw material. Therefore, CDs have been intensively pursued for a wide range of applications, such as bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors and antibacterial agents. In this review, we systematically summarize the synthesis methods of these CDs, their photoluminescence mechanisms, and the approaches for enhancing their fluorescence properties. Particularly, we summarize the recent research on the synthesis of CDs from drug molecules as raw materials and introduce the representative application aspects of these fascinating CDs. Finally, we look into the future direction of CDs in the biomedical field and discuss the challenges encountered in the current development.
