Cucurbit[6]uril functionalized gold nanoparticles and electrode for the detection of metformin drug

Ag-CeO2 Based on Electrochemical Sensor for High-Efficient On-Site Detection of Nitrite in Aquaculture Water and Beverages

Nitrite is one of the most common nitrogenous compounds, which is not only an important indicator of aquaculture water but also widely used as a food additive. Its potential toxicity poses a huge threat to aquatic products and human health. Therefore, it is important to develop a convenient and rapid sensor for the high-efficient onsite detection of nitrite. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of nitrite. The developed nitrite electrochemical detection system is easily applied in onsite detection. The electrochemical working electrode was constructed based on the combination of Ag-CeO2 and conductive carbon paste (CPE) with excellent electrocatalysis activity and rapid electron transfer ability. By the application of the developed system and under the optimal conditions, the linear range was from 40.0 μM to 500.0 μM, and the detection limit was reduced to 4.3 μM. The recovery was between 92.1% and 108.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 0.49%~9.31%. The sensor exhibited superior reproducibility, high stability sensitivity, and anti-interference ability, confirming its effectiveness for nitrite analysis. Finally, the developed electrochemical sensor was successfully applied to detect nitrite in beverages and aquaculture water samples, indicating that this approach has great potential in onsite food testing and environmental monitoring.

Carbon dots derived from metformin by electrochemical synthesis with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties

Due to the advantages of good aqueous dispersion and biocompatibility, carbon dots (CDs) are promising candidates for a wide range of applications in the biological field. Notably, CDs derived from biosafe organic precursors will contribute both new types of CDs and new bioactivities. Herein, metformin (MET), a first-line drug for the treatment of type II diabetes, was selected as an organic precursor to fabricate a new type of CDs, namely, semi-carbonized MET (MCDs). These MCDs derived from MET possess a completely new antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) compared with that of MET and achieve complete antibacterial activity at 200 μg mL-1. The broad-spectrum antibacterial mechanism of MCDs involves two aspects. For the Gram-positive bacteria SA, MCDs mainly affect the transport of nutrients by adsorbing onto the surface of bacteria, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. For the Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, MCDs can easily pass through their thin cell walls and stimulate the bacteria to produce excess ROS, eventually leading to the death of the bacteria. This work may open a new way for the future design and development of CDs prepared from biosafe organic precursors with specific functions.

Emerging sensing platforms based on Cucurbit[n]uril functionalized gold nanoparticles and electrodes

Cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s, n = 5-8, 10, and 14), synthetic macrocycles with unique host-guest properties, have triggered increasing research interest in recent years. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and electrodes stand out as exceptional substrates for sensing due to their remarkable physicochemical characteristics. Coupling the CB[n]s with Au NPs and electrodes has enabled the development of emerging sensing platforms for various promising applications. However, monitoring the behavior of analytes at the single-molecule level is currently one of the most challenging topics in the field of CB[n]-based sensing. Constructing supramolecular junctions in a sensing platform provides an ideal structure for single-molecule analysis, which can provide insights for a fundamental understanding of supramolecular interactions and chemical reactions and guide the design of sensing applications. This feature article outlines the progress in the preparation of the CB[n] functionalized Au NPs and Au electrodes, as well as the construction and application of supramolecular junctions in sensing platforms, based on the methods of recognition tunneling (RT), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS), and electrochemical sensing (ECS). A brief perspective on the future development of and challenges in CB[n] mediated sensing platforms is also covered.

Toward the Development of Simplified Lateral Flow Assays Using Hydrogels as the Universal Control Line

Lateral flow assays (LFA) have been widely utilized as point-of-care testing devices in diverse fields. However, it is imperative to preprint costly bioreceptors onto the lateral flow nitrocellulose membrane at the control line. The complex manufacturing process and relatively limited detection capabilities of LFA have impeded their utilization in more challenging fields. Here, we propose a novel and simple strategy to simplify the manufacture of LFA while simultaneously improving the sensitivity by modifying the hydrogel line (HL). In our study, it was observed that the sensitivity of commercial LFA strips could be enhanced by 2-5-fold by incorporating an extra HL. Particularly, a universal control line was developed to accommodate multiple LFA detection modes by substituting the conventional antibody control line with a hydrogel control line (HCL). As a proof of concept, the HCL performance could be associated with the slowdown and interception effect toward fluid, which are dependent on the permeation and hydrophilicity of the hydrogel with varying concentrations in the nitrocellulose membrane. This new design builds the foundation to enhance the sensitivity and develop the simplified LFA sensing platform without additional complicated processes.

Mechanical quantum analysis on the role of transition metals on the delivery of metformin anticancer drug by the boron phosphide nanotube

We scrutinized the impact of doping of X atoms (X = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) on the metformin (MF) drug delivery performance of a BP nanotube (BPNT) using density functional B3LYP calculations. The pristine BPNT was not ideal for the drug delivery of MF because of a weak interaction between the drug and nanotube. Doping of the Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe into the BPNT surface raised the adsorption energy of MF from -5.3 to -29.1, -28.7, -29.8, -32.1, and -26.9 kcal/mol, respectively, demonstrating that the sensitiveness of the metal-doped BPNT increased after increasing the radius atomic of metals. Ultimately, there was an increase in the adhesion performance and capacity of the MF after X (especially Co atom) doping, making the nanotube suitable for MF drug delivery. The mechanism of MF reaction with the BPNT changed from covalent bonding in the natural environment to hydrogen bonding in the cancerous cells with high acidity.
