Group 4 metallocenes incorporating constrained-geometry carboranyl ligands

Metallaaromaticity involving a d0 early transition metal centre: synthesis, structure, and aromaticity of tantallapyridinazirine complexes

Though late transition metal aromatic metallabenzenes and related heteroatom-containing analogues have been well studied, the corresponding aromatic early transition metal complexes remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of aromatic, planar, and delocalised organotantallapyridinium complexes via a simple one-pot process by sequential treatment of tantalum methyl complex [η5:σ-Me2C(C5H4)(C2B10H10)]TaMe3 with alkynes and isocyanide. Single-crystal X-ray analyses, NMR spectroscopic data and DFT calculations suggest that they are aromatic tantallapyridinium complexes, a class of long-sought-after molecules. This work would shed some light on the preparation of metallaaromatics involving early transition metals.

Iridium-Catalyzed Selective B(4)-H Amination of o-Carboranes with Anthranils

We report here a catalytic selective cage B4-H amination of o-carboranes employing an Ir(III) complex as a catalyst and anthranils as aminating agents, leading to a large class of B4-aminated o-carboranes with very high yields and a broad substrate scope under mild conditions without any oxidants. In these reactions, the carboxyl group serves as a traceless directing unit to determine the site selectivity and degree of substitution.

N-Ligand-Enabled Aromatic Nucleophilic Amination of 1,2-Diaryl-o-Carboranes with (R2 N)2 Mg for Selective Synthesis of 4-R2 N-o-Carboranes and 2-R2 N-m-Carboranes

The nucleophilic aromatic BH substitution reaction of carboranes is uncommon, compared to the electrophilic one. This work reported a pyridine-enabled transition-metal-free regioselective nucleophilic aromatic cage B(4)-H amination of 1,2-diaryl-o-carboranes with magnesium bisamides, giving a series of B(4)-aminated o-carboranes. DFT calculations showcased a stepwise B-N formation/B-H cleavage process, in which Mg-H formation/cage closure is the rate-determining step. Unprecedentedly, in the presence of 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl (dtbpy), a tandem B(4)-amination/cage isomerization reaction of o-carboranes was discovered for the facile preparation of B(2)-aminated m-carboranes. Control experiments indicated that magnesium complex, bidentate ligand (dtbpy) and reaction temperature were crucial in the cage isomerization process. This direct nucleophilic aromatic cage B-H amination reaction offers an alternative strategy for selective amination of o- and m-carboranes.

Transition metal catalyzed selective B(3)-H or B(4)-H amination of o-carboranes via dehydrogenative BH/NH cross-coupling

A unique approach to vertex-selective catalytic B-H amination at either the B(3)- or B(4)-position in o-carboranes has been developed. Using different transition metal catalysts, dehydrogenative BH/NH cross-coupling of o-carboranes and free amines has been achieved, leading to a wide variety of cage B(3)- or B(4)-aminated o-carboranes in moderate to high yields with excellent regioselectivity, where carboranyl carboxylic acids and amines can serve as competent coupling partners without any pre-functionalization. The isolation and structural identification of a key intermediate provide an insight into the reaction mechanism in the catalytic B(4)-H amination.

Electrochemical B-H Nitrogenation: Access to Amino Acid and BODIPY-Labeled nido-Carboranes

Electrocatalyzed oxidative B-H nitrogenations of nido-carborane (nido-7,8-C2 B9 H12- ) with N-heterocycles have been established, enabling the preparation of various N-substituted nido-carboranes without chemical oxidants or metal catalyst under ambient conditions. The electrolysis manifold occurred with high levels of efficiency as well as chemo- and position- selectivity, employing sustainable electricity as the sole oxidant. The strategy set the stage for a user-friendly access to novel amino acid and fluorogenic boron-dipyrrin (BODIPY)-labeled nido-carborane hybrids.

Synthesis and structure of metallacarboranes bearing carborane-fused cyclopentenyl and dicarbollyl-fused cyclopentene ligands

New types of ligands, carborane-fused cyclopentenyl and dicarbollyl-fused cyclopentene, were conveniently prepared in high yields. Treatment of the lithium salt of carborane-fused cyclopentenyl anion, [1,2-[C(Me)CHC(Ph)]-1,2-C2B10H10]Li, with [Cp*RuCl]4 generated an 18-electron complex [η3:η2-(PhCCHCMe)C2B10H10]Ru(η5-Cp*). On the other hand, reaction of the dicarbollide salt, [7,8-(CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe)-7,8-C2B9H9]Na2 with [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl2]2 or CoCl2/CpNa, afforded the salt metathesis product [η5-(CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe)C2B9H9]Ru(η6-p-cymene) or [η5-(CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe)C2B9H9]Co(η5-C5H5) in good yields. In contrast, [7,8-(CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe)-7,8-C2B9H9]Na2 reacted with Ni(dppp)Cl2 (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) to give another 18-electron metallacarborane [η5-(CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe)C2B9H9]Ni(dppp), in which one of the cage carbon atoms has been isomerized to the lower belt of the cage due to steric reasons. All these new metallacarborane compounds were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analyses.

Noncovalently Linked Metallacarboranes on Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles as Highly Efficient, Robust, and Reusable Photocatalysts in Aqueous Medium

A successful homogeneous photoredox catalyst has been fruitfully heterogenized on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with a silica layer, keeping intact its homogeneous catalytic properties but gaining others due to the easy magnetic separation and recyclability. The amine-terminated magnetic silica nanoparticles linked noncovalently to H[3,3'-Co(1,2-C₂B₉H₁₁)₂]^- (H[1]), termed MSNPs-NH₂@H[1], are highly stable and do not produce any leakage of the photoredox catalyst H[1] in water. The magnetite MNPs were coated with SiO₂ to provide colloidal stability and silanol groups to be tethered to amine-containing units. These were the MSNPs-NH₂ on which was anchored, in water, the cobaltabis(dicarbollide) complex H[1] to obtain MSNPs-NH₂@H[1]. Both MSNPs-NH₂ and MSNPs-NH₂@H[1] were evaluated to study the morphology, characterization, and colloidal stability of the MNPs produced. The heterogeneous MSNP-NH₂@H[1] system was studied for the photooxidation of alcohols, such as 1-phenylethanol, 1-hexanol, 1,6-hexanediol, or cyclohexanol among others, using catalyst loads of 0.1 and 0.01 mol %. Surfactants were introduced to prevent the aggregation of MNPs, and cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride was chosen as a surfactant. This provided adequate stability, without hampering quick magnetic separation. The results proved that the catalysis could be speeded up if aggregation was prevented. The recyclability of the catalytic system was demonstrated by performing 12 runs of the MSNPs-NH₂@H[1] system, each one without loss of selectivity and yield. The cobaltabis(dicarbollide) catalyst supported on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles has proven to be a robust, efficient, and easily reusable system for the photooxidation of alcohols in water, resulting in a green and sustainable heterogeneous catalytic system.

Metallacarboranes as Photoredox Catalysts in Water

Metallacarboranes with the shape of the Greek letter θ, such as [Co(C₂ B₉ H₁₁ )₂ ]^- , were tested, for the first time, as efficient photoredox catalysts in the oxidation of aromatic and aliphatic alcohols in water. Their efficiency is linked to their high solubility in water, their high oxidizing power (Co^4+/3+ ), and their absence of fluorescence on excitation, among others. In most of the studied examples, using a catalyst load of 0.4 mol % gave high yields of 90-95 % with selectivity greater than 99 %. By reducing the catalyst load to 0.01 mol %, quantitative conversion of reactants to products was achieved, in some cases with greater than 99 % yield, high catalyst efficiency reaching a turnover number of 10 000, and a higher yield with a 45 times lower concentration of catalyst. The metallacarboranes can be recovered easily by precipitation on addition of [NMe₄ ]Cl. A pathway for the photoredox-catalyzed oxidation of alcohols is proposed.

Geometric deconstruction of core and electron activation of a π-system in a series of deformed porphyrins: mimics of heme

The predominant distortion of heme is responsible for its electronic activity, catalytic ability and spectral properties. In this work, altogether 12 new X-ray structures of saddled, waved and ruffled porphyrins are reported. Three types of deformed porphyrins as mimics of heme were evaluated and analyzed by geometric deconstruction, spectral comparison, and electrochemical tracking, which shows a unique relationship of deformation fashions and distortion degree to the geometry of the core and electron transfer ability of rings in these enzyme containing porphyrins. These mimics can adjust their core geometry for changing the structures of potential metals; while for rings themselves, they can also regulate the electron activity by switching the HOMO of the large π systems. These deformed porphyrins can be used as ideal mimics for heme. These findings help us to understand the principle and contribution of these deformations to electron transfer in catalytic oxidation and photoreactions. The nonplanar mimics have been synthesized through a modular synthetic approach under Adler-Longo or Lindsey condensation conditions.

Reaction of N-heterocyclic carbenes with 13-vertex closo-carboranes: synthesis and structural characterization of zwitterionic salts of 13-vertex nido-carboranes

13-Vertexcloso-carboranes and N-heterocyclic carbenes undergo a fast acid–base reaction to generate intermediates that are slowly converted to the final products.

Regioselective insertion of o-carborynes into the α-C-H bond of tertiary amines: synthesis of α-carboranylated amines

o-Carboryne can undergo α-CH bond insertion with tertiary amines, thus affording α-carboranylated amines in very good regioselectivity and isolated yields. In this process, the nucleophilic addition of tertiary amines to the multiple bond of o-carboryne generates a zwitterionic intermediate. An intramolecular proton transfer, followed by a nucleophilic attack leads to the formation of the final product. Thus, regioselectivity is highly dependent upon the acidity of α-CH proton of tertiary amines. This approach serves as an efficient methodology for the preparation of a series of 1-aminoalkyl-o-carboranes.
