Synthetic and structural chemistry of groups 11 and 12 metal complexes of the zwitterionic ammonium thiolate ligands

Polyhedral {Ag12} and {Ag16} Clusters: Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

Two polyhedral silver-thiolate clusters, [S@Ag16(Tab)10(MeCN)8](PF6)14 (Ag16) and [Ag12(Tab)6(DMF)12](PF6)12 (Ag12), were synthesized by using electroneutral Tab species as protective ligands (Tab=4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide, MeCN=acetonitrile). Ag16 has a decahedral shape composed of eight pentagon {Ag5} units and two square {Ag4} units. The structure of Ag12 is a cuboctahedron, a classical Archimedean structure composed of six triangular faces and eight square faces. The former configuration is discovered in silver-thiolate cluster for the first time, possibly benefited from the more flexible coordination between the Tab ligand and Ag+ facilitated by the electropositive -N(CH3)3 + substituent group. Third-order nonlinear optical studies show that both clusters in DMF exhibit reverse saturate absorption response under the irradiation of 532 nm laser.

Heterocyclic-2-thione derivatives of metals incorporating cyclopalladated azobenzenes of variable nuclearity and N,S-bridged 1D polymer of [bis(pyridine-2-thiolato)mercury(ii)]

In this investigation, the reactivity of azobenzene-based cyclopalladated precursors with a series of heterocyclic-2-thiones is described.

Self-assembly patterns of non-metalloid silver thiolates: structural, HR-ESI-MS and stability studies

Screening of AgNO₃/AgS^tBu solutions in DMF, DMSO and NMP resulted in the isolation of three novel nanosized silver/thiolate complexes with a torus-like {Ag₂₀(S^tBu)₁₀} core. The structures of [NO₃@Ag₂₀(S^tBu)₁₀(NO₃)₉(DMF)₆] (1) and [NO₃@Ag₂₀(^tBuS)₁₀(NO₃)₈(NMP)₈][NO₃@Ag₁₉(^tBuS)₁₀(NO₃)₈(NMP)₆]₂(NO₃) (2) were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The self-assembly process leading to 1 can be switched to a different outcome using Br^-, resulting in [Br@Ag₁₆(S^tBu)₈(NO₃)₅(DMF)₃](NO₃)₂ (3), which is the one of the few genuine host-guest complexes in the silver/thiolate systems. Solutions of the individual complexes in CH₃CN were studied by HR-ESI-MS techniques, which revealed a dynamic behavior for each complex, driven by a redistribution of the {AgNO₃} units. This dynamics results in the appearance of both cationic and anionic species, based on unchanged silver-thiolate cores. Daylight causes degradation of 3 with the formation of a composite material based on defective orthorhombic Ag₂S with a porous morphology, as observed using the SEM technique. The electrocatalytic HER activity of such a material was studied.

Steric and Electronic Effects on the Structure and Photophysical Properties of Hg(II) Complexes

Since many factors influence the coordination around a metal center, steric and electronic effects of the ligands mainly determine the connectivity and, thus, the final arrangement. This is emphasized on Hg(II) centers, which have a zero point stabilization energy and, thus, a flexible coordination environment. Therefore, the unrestricted Hg(II) geometry facilitates the predominance of the ligands during the structural inception. Herein, we synthesized and characterized a series of six Hg(II) complexes with general formula (Hg(Pip)₂(dPy)) (Pip = piperonylate, dPy = 3-phenylpyridine (3-phpy) (1), 4-phenylpyridine (4-phpy) (2), 2,2′-bipyridine (2,2′-bipy) (3), 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) (4), 2,2′:6′,2′-terpyridine (terpy) (5), or di(2-picolyl)amine (dpa) (6)). The elucidation of their crystal structures revealed the arrangement of three monomers (3, 5, and 6), one dimer (4), and two coordination polymers (1 and 2) depending on the steric requirements of the dPy and predominance of the ligands. Besides, the study of their photophysical properties in solution supported by TD-DFT calculations enabled us to understand their electronic effects and the influence of the structural arrangement on them.

Six Hg(II) complexes containing 1,3-benzodioxole-5-carboxylic acid and pyridine derivatives bearing N-, N^N′-, and N^N^N-donor sites have been characterized and their crystal structure elucidated. Steric crowding defined the predominance of the linkers in the structural arrangement, varying from monomers to coordination polymers. Their photophysical properties were analyzed through experimental and TD-DFT calculations, identifying the character and regions involved on each electronic transition. In addition, seclusion of the HOMO from the LUMO defined them as appropriate to selective band gap tuning.

Copper(i) halide cluster-based coordination polymers modulated by chiral ditopic dithiodianthranilide ligands: synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence

The influence of ligand chirality on the self-assembly and spectroscopic properties of copper(i) halide coordination polymers was investigated.

Metal-organic frameworks for virus detection

Virus severely endangers human life and health, and the detection of viruses is essential for the prevention and treatment of associated diseases. Metal-organic framework (MOF), a novel hybrid porous material which is bridged by the metal clusters and organic linkers, has become a promising biosensor platform for virus detection due to its outstanding properties including high surface area, adjustable pore size, easy modification, etc. However, the MOF-based sensing platforms for virus detection are rarely summarized. This review systematically divided the detection platforms into nucleic acid and immunological (antigen and antibody) detection, and the underlying sensing mechanisms were interpreted. The nucleic acid sensing was discussed based on the properties of MOF (such as metal ion, functional group, geometry structure, size, porosity, stability, etc.), revealing the relationship between the sensing performance and properties of MOF. Moreover, antibodies sensing based on the fluorescence detection and antigens sensing based on molecular imprinting or electrochemical immunoassay were highlighted. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future development of MOF for virus detection were further discussed and proposed. This review will provide valuable references for the construction of sophisticated sensing platform for the detection of viruses, especially the 2019 coronavirus.

Silver clusters templated by homo- and hetero-anions

This article highlights the use of homo- and hetero-anion templates for the ordered assembly of high-nuclearity silver clusters.

Palladium(ii) and palladium(ii)-silver(i) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene and zwitterionic thiolate mixed ligands: synthesis, structural characterization and catalytic properties

The integration of a geometrically rigid Pd(ii), a coordinatively monotonous N-heterocyclic carbene 1,3-dimethylimidazoline-2-ylidene (IMe), and a flexible zwitterionic thiolate 4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate (Tab) affords a class of Pd-IMe-Tab complexes with various nuclearities, namely, trans-[Pd(IMe)₂(Tab)₂](OTf)₂ (2, mononuclear), cis-[Pd(IMe)₂(Tab)₂](OTf)(Cl) (3a, mononuclear), cis-[Pd(IMe)₂(Tab)₂](PF₆)₂·MeCN (3b·MeCN, mononuclear), [Pd₂(IMe)₄(Tab)₂](PF₆)₄·2MeCN (4·2MeCN, dinuclear) and [Pd₄(IMe)₄(Tab)₆](OTf)₆(Cl)₂ (5, tetranuclear). Further presence of Ag(i) in the assembly provides a heterometallic octanuclear cluster of [Pd₄Ag₄(IMe)₈(Tab)₁₀](PF₆)₁₂ (6). Compounds 2-6 are formed by the reaction of trans-Pd(IMe)₂Cl₂ (1) with various additional reagents via different reaction pathways. These compounds are characterized by means of FT-IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, ESI-MS, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. Notably, the skeleton of compound 5 features a [Pd₄S₄] parallelogram wherein each of the four Pd(ii) centers bisects the edge defined by the S atoms. The main skeleton of compound 6 is an oval-shaped Pd₄Ag₄S₁₀ unit, featuring an edge-fused norbornane-like (Pd₂Ag₄S₆) framework appended by two additional PdS₂ motifs at the polar positions. Compounds 5 and 6 also feature PdPd (5), PdAg and AgAg (6) interactions. Compound 5 as a representative example is highly effective at catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura couplings in water, highlighting the potential of applying these types of homo- and heterometallic clusters as catalysts for organic transformations in environmentally benign media.

C–H reductive elimination during the reaction of cycloplatinated(ii) complexes with pyridine-2-thione: kinetic follow up

Reactions of the cycloplatinated(ii) complexes [PtR(ppy)(SMe₂)], 1, where ppy = deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine and R = Me or p-MeC₆H₄, with pyridine-2-thione, C₅H₅SN, were studied by UV-vis and ¹H NMR spectroscopies and on the basis of the data a mechanism is proposed.

An electroactive porous network from covalent metal–dithiolene links

Direct reaction between a hexathiol and PtCl₂ leads to the formation of a covalent metal–organic framework (CMOF) featuring substantial porosity, redox activity and ion exchange capability.

Reactions of aromatic S- and O-enynes with two methyl substituents on the olefinic unit assisted by a ruthenium complex: tandem cyclization and product selectivity

Ruthenium-assisted cyclizations of two enynes, HC≡CCH(OH)(C6H4)X-CH2CH=CMe2 (X=S (1a), O (1b)), each of which contains two terminal methyl substituents on the olefinic parts, are explored. The reaction of 1a in CH2Cl2 gives the vinylidene complex 2a from the first cyclization and two side products, 3a and the carbene complex 4a with a benzothiophene ligand. The same reaction in the presence of HBF4 affords 4a exclusively. Air oxidation of 4a in the presence of Et3N readily gives an aldehyde product. In MeOH, tandem cyclizations of 1a generate a mixture of the benzothiochromene compound 10a and the carbene complex 7a also with a benzothiochromene ligand. First, cyclization of 1b likewise proceeds in CH2Cl2 to give 2b. Tandem cyclization of 1b in MeOH yields comparable products 10b and 7b with benzochromene moieties, yet with no other side product. The reaction of [Ru]Cl with HC≡CCH(OH)(C6H4)S-CH2CH=CH2 (1c), which contains no methyl substituent in the olefinic part, in MeOH gives the carbene complex 15c with an unsubstituted thiochromene by means of a C-S bond formation. Structures of 3a and 15c are confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The presence of methyl groups of enynes 1a and 1b promotes sequential cyclization reactions that involve C-C bond formation through carbocationic species.
