Abstract
Molecular interactions between active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and xanthine (XAT) derivatives were analyzed using singular value decomposition (SVD). XAT derivatives were mixed with equimolar amounts of ibuprofen (IBP) and diclofenac (DCF), and their dissolution behaviors were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. The solubility of IBP decreased in mixtures with caffeine (CFN) and theophylline (TPH), whereas that of DCF increased in mixtures with CFN and TPH. No significant differences were observed between the mixtures of theobromine (TBR) or XAT with IBP and DCF. Mixtures with various molar ratios were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to further explore these interactions. The results were subjected to SVD. This analysis provides valuable insights into the differences in interaction strength and predicted interaction sites between XAT derivatives and APIs based on the combinations that form mixtures. The results also showed the impact of the XAT derivatives on the dissolution behavior of IBP and DCF. Although IBP and DCF were found to form intermolecular interactions with CFN and TPH, these effects resulted in a reduction of the solubility of IBP and an increase in the solubility of DCF. The current approach has the potential to predict various interactions that may occur in different combinations, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the impact of health supplements on pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Iron is one of the Earth's most abundant elements and is required for essentially all forms of life. Yet, iron's reactivity with oxygen and poor solubility in its oxidized form (Fe3+) mean that it is often a limiting nutrient in oxic, near-neutral pH environments like Earth's ocean. In addition to being a vital nutrient, there is a diversity of aerobic organisms that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to harness energy for growth and biosynthesis. Accordingly, these organisms rely on access to co-existing Fe2+ and O2 to survive. It is generally presumed that such aerobic iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) are relegated to low-oxygen regimes where abiotic iron oxidation rates are slower, yet some FeOB live in higher oxygen environments where they cannot rely on lower oxygen concentrations to overcome abiotic competition. We hypothesized that FeOB chemically alter their environment to limit abiotic interactions between Fe2+ and O2. To test this, we incubated the secreted metabolites (collectively known as the exometabolome) of the deep-sea iron- and hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium Ghiorsea bivora TAG-1 with ferrous iron and oxygen. We found that this FeOB's iron-oxidizing exometabolome markedly impedes the abiotic oxidation of ferrous iron, increasing the half-life of Fe2+ 100-fold from ∼3 to ∼335 days in the presence of O2, while the exometabolome of TAG-1 grown on hydrogen had no effect. Moreover, the few precipitates that formed in the presence of TAG-1's iron-oxidizing exometabolome were poorly crystalline, compared with the abundant iron particles that mineralized in the absence of abiotic controls. We offer an initial exploration of TAG-1's iron-oxidizing exometabolome and discuss potential key contributors to this process. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the exometabolome as a whole leads to a sustained accumulation of ferrous iron in the presence of oxygen, consequently altering the redox equilibrium. This previously unknown adaptation likely enables these microorganisms to persist in an iron-oxidizing and iron-precipitating world and could have impacts on the bioavailability of iron to FeOB and other life in iron-limiting environments.

Abstract
Aggregating gold(I) complexes in solution through short aurophilic contacts promotes new photoluminescent deactivation pathways (aggregation-induced emission, AIE). The time dependence of spontaneous AIE is seldom studied. We examine the behavior of complex [Au(N9-hypoxanthinate)(PTA)] (1) in an aqueous solution with the aid of variable-temperature NMR, time-resolved UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, and PGSE NMR. The studies suggest that partial ligand scrambling in favor of the ionic [Au(PTA)2][Au(N9-hypoxanthinate)2] pair followed by anion oligomerization takes place. The results are rationalized with the aid of computational calculations at the TD-DFT level of theory and IRI analysis of the electron density.

Abstract
In the extensive field of metal ions, their interactions with nucleic acids, and their constituents, the main aim of this work is to develop a metal chelate suitable to recognize two molecules of an adenine nucleoside. For this purpose, the dinuclear chelate Cu2 (µ-EDTA) (ethylenediaminetetraacetate(4-) ion (EDTA)) is chosen as a bicephalic receptor model for N9-(2-hydroxyethyl)adenine (9heade). A one-pot synthesis is reported to obtain the compound [Cu2(µ2-EDTA)(9heade)2(H2O)4]·3H2O, which has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and various spectral, thermal, and magnetic methods. The complex unit is a centro-symmetric molecule, where each Cu (II) center is chelated by a half-EDTA, and is further surrounded by an N7-dentate 9heade nucleoside and two non-equivalent trans-O-aqua molecules. The metal chelate-nucleoside molecular recognition is referred to as an efficient cooperation between the Cu-N7(9heade) coordination bond and a (9heade)N6-H···O(carboxyl, EDTA) interligand interaction. Theoretical calculations are also made to account for the relevance of this interaction. The extreme weakness with which each water molecule binds to the metal center disturbs the thermal stability and the infrared (FT-IR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the compound.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Coordination compounds, in particular cobalt(II) mixed ligand complexes containing 1,10-phenantroline, have drawn the attention of many investigators as some of them are showing antimicrobial activities.
Result
Herein, we report three novel mixed ligand complexes of cobalt(II) having the formulae [Co(L1)2(H2O)2]Cl2, [Co(L1)2(L2)(H2O)]Cl2 and [Co2(L1)4(L2)2(L3)]Cl4 (L1 = 1,10-phenanthroline, L2 = adenine, L3 = 1,3-diaminepropane) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurement, infrared, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Octahedral geometries are proposed to all the complexes. In vitro antibacterial activities of the ligands, salt, and metal complexes were tested on four pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhus, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus epidermis) using disc diffusion method.
Conclusions
It is interesting to note that the newly synthesized cobalt(II) complexes are active against gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) even though cobalt(II) complexes are well known for their activity against gram positive bacteria.

Abstract
Four ternary metal-complexes with Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylate (pdc) or glycyl-glycinate (GG) and the synthetic nucleoside 9-(2-hydroxyethyl)adenine (9heade) have been synthesized and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other physical methods. Relevant supramolecular assemblies found in the solid state structures have been further studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the energetic features of the non-covalent interactions as well as the cooperativity effects have been calculated and characterized using the non-covalent interaction plot computational tool. Compounds trans-[Cu(pdc)(9heade)(H2O)2]·3H2O (1a) and [Cu(pdc)(9heade)(H2O)]·H2O (1b), trans-[Zn(pdc)(9heade)(H2O)2] (2), share the same molecular recognition pattern consisting in the cooperation of the metal-N7(9heade) bond and an interligand (9heade)N6-H···O(pdc) interaction, regardless of the nature of the metal, the coordination environment and the water content. At a supramolecular level, these compounds exhibit pairs of complex molecules linked by H-bonds and interesting anion-π/π-π/π-anion assemblies (in 1a and 1b) or the unprecedented π-π interactions (in 2), involving the purine moieties or the exocyclic -6NH2 purine groups, respectively. Compound 3, {[Cu(GG)(9heade)(H2O)·Cu(GG)(μ2-9heade)]·8H2O}n, consists in asymmetric dinuclear complex units (Cu···Cu 7.83 Å) that connect with adjacent ones by pairs of very weak Cu-O(carboxylate) bonds (Cu···Cu 3.81 Å) building a polymeric chain. The supramolecular transition from a single molecule to dinuclear units and finally a polymeric chain is also observed in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and discussed from a structural point of view as well as by DFT calculations. The unprecedented N7 and μ-N7,O(ol) metal binding patterns of 9heade differs from that recently reported (μ-N1,N7) in a Cd(II) polymer.

Abstract
Thiosemicarbazones and their metal derivatives have long been screened as antitumor agents, and their interactions with DNA have been analysed. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of compounds containing [CuL]+ entities (HL = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) and adenine, cytosine or 9-methylguanine, and some of their corresponding nucleotides. For the first time, crystal structures of adenine- and 9-methylguanine-containing thiosemicarbazone complexes are reported. To the best of our knowledge, the first study on the affinity thiosemicarbazone-RNA is also provided here. Experimental and computational studies have shown that [CuL(OH2)]+ entities at low concentration intercalate into dsRNA poly(rA)·poly(rU) through strong hydrogen bonds involving uracil residues and π-π stacking interactions. In fact, noncovalent interactions are present both in the solid state and in solution. This behaviour diverges from that observed with DNA duplexes and creates an optimistic outlook in achieving selective binding to RNA for subsequent possible medical applications.

Abstract
In this feature article, targeted design strategies are outlined for modified adenine nucleobase derivatives in order to construct metal-mediated discrete complexes, ring-expanded purine skeletons, linear and catenated coordination polymers, shape-selective MOFs, and purine-capped nanoparticles, with a wide range of applications from gas and solvent adsorption to bioimaging agents and anticancer metallodrugs. The success of such design strategies could be ascribed to the rich chemistry of purine and pyrimidine derivatives, versatile coordination behavior, ability to bind a host of metal ions, which could be further tuned by the introduction of additional functionalities, and their inherent propensity to hydrogen bond and exhibit π-π interactions. These noncovalent interactions produce stable frameworks and network solids that are useful as advanced materials, and the biocompatibility of these ligand complexes provides an impetus for assessing novel biological applications.

Abstract
In this work, two complexes of ruthenium(III) ([Ru(phen)2Cl2]Cl·2H2O and [Ru(phen)2(G)Cl]2Cl·H2O) were synthesized from 1,10-phenanthroline alone as well as from both 1,10-phenanthroline and guanide. The synthesis was checked using halide test, conductance measurement, and spectroscopic (ICP-OES, FTIR, and UV/Vis) analysis. Their in vitro antibacterial activities were also investigated on two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae)) bacteria. These complexes showed wide-range better activities than the commercially available controls (Chloramphenicol and Ciprofloxacin) against even the most drug resistant K. pneumoniae. [Ru(phen)2(G)Cl]2Cl·H2O inhibited S. aureus, MRSA, E. coli, and K. pneumoniae by 17.5%, 27.4%, 16%, and 52%, respectively, better than Chloramphenicol. It also inhibited these pathogens by 5.9%, 5.1%, 2.3%, and 17.2%, respectively, better than Ciprofloxacin. Similarly, [Ru(Phen)2(Cl)2]Cl·2H2O inhibited these pathogens by 11%, 8.7%, 0.1%, and 31.2%, respectively, better than Chloramphenicol. Therefore, after in vivo cytotoxicity investigations, these compounds can be considered as potential antibiotic drugs.

Abstract
G-quadruplex (G4) with stacked G-tetrads structure is able to bind hemin (iron (III)-protoporphyrin IX) to form a unique type of DNAzyme/RNAzyme with peroxidase-mimicking activity, which has been widely employed in multidisciplinary fields. However, its further applications are hampered by its relatively weak activity compared with protein enzymes. Herein, we report a unique intramolecular enhancement effect of the adjacent adenine (EnEAA) at 3' end of G4 core sequences that significantly improves the activity of G4 DNAzymes. Through detailed investigations of the EnEAA, the added 3' adenine was proved to accelerate the compound I formation in catalytic cycle and thus improve the G4 DNAzyme activity. EnEAA was found to be highly dependent on the unprotonated state of the N1 of adenine, substantiating that adenine might function as a general acid-base catalyst. Further adenine analogs analysis supported that both N1 and exocyclic 6-amino groups in adenine played key role in the catalysis. Moreover, we proved that EnEAA was generally applicable for various parallel G-quadruplex structures and even G4 RNAzyme. Our studies implied that adenine might act analogously as the distal histidine in protein peroxidases, which shed light on the fundamental understanding and rational design of G4 DNAzyme/RNAzyme catalysts with enhanced functions.

Abstract
The purpose of our work is to characterize and present a theoretical comparative study of a variety of compounds based on DNA base pairs linked with some transition metal ions in gas phase: C–M–G (Cytosine–metal–Guanine) where [Formula: see text](I), Zn(II), Cd(II) and A–M–T (Adenine–metal–Thyminate) where [Formula: see text](II), Ru(I), Ni(I), Y(II), Zn(I), Cd(I), Cu(II). Geometry optimization and frequency calculations were carried out at DFT/ZORA/BLYP-D/TZ2P level. M–N and M–O bonds were investigated with the quantum chemical topology (QCT): Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and electron localization functions (ELF). The hydrogen bonds: N10–H[Formula: see text]O7 for A–M–T complexes and N7–H[Formula: see text]O10 for C–M–T ones were visualized and discussed, QTAIM and ELF prove the existence of O7–H[Formula: see text]N10 hydrogen bond for some A–M–T systems, since the bond critical point (BCP) of N7–H having [Formula: see text], so it has a covalent character confirming the existence of a tautomer process of these complexes. Bonding energy [Formula: see text], Pauli repulsion [Formula: see text], electrostatic [Formula: see text], and orbital [Formula: see text] interactions were represented and compared together. Hirschfeld’s charges showed the existence of charge transfer process in the bridge moieties. It seems that, in contrast to natural base pairs that are stabilized by hydrogen bonding, Hoogsteen-type base pairs are held together by coordinative bond with metal ions.

Abstract
For a better understanding of the versatile behaviour of adenine as a ligand, a series of 10 ternary copper(II) complexes with deaza-adenine ligands [7-azaindole (1,6,7-trideaza-adenine, H7azain), 4-azabenzimidazole (1,6-dideaza-adenine, H4abim), 5-azabenzimidazole (3,6-dideaza-adenine, H5abim), and 7-deaza-adenine (H7deaA)] have been synthesised and characterised by X-ray diffraction. Likewise, all the compounds studied have been analysed by spectral and thermal methods. The proton tautomers and donor capabilities of the above-mentioned deaza-adenine ligands have been calculated by DFT. We conclude that the increasing presence of N-donors in deaza-adenine ligands favours the proton tautomerism and their versatility as co-ligands. Notably, H7azain consistently uses the same tautomer, H4abim uses two different tautomers but is not protonated by the pentadentate H(2)EDTA(2-) ligand, and H(N1)5abim displays the μ(2)-N7,N9 mode, whereas H(N9)7deaA binds Cu(II) by N3 in cooperation with an intra-molecular N9-H···O interaction or using the unprecedented bidentate μ(2)-N1,N3 bridging mode.

Abstract
For a better understanding of the metal binding pattern of N(6)-substituted adenines, six novel ternary Cu(II) complexes have been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction: [Cu(NBzIDA)(HCy5ade)(H2O)]·H2O (1), [Cu(NBzIDA)(HCy6ade)(H2O)]·H2O (2), [Cu(FurIDA)(HCy6ade)(H2O)]·H2O (3), [Cu(MEBIDA)(HBAP)(H2O)]·H2O (4), [Cu(FurIDA)(HBAP)]n (5) and {[Cu(NBzIDA)(HdimAP)]·H2O}n (6). In these compounds NBzIDA, FurIDA and MEBIDA are N-substituted iminodiacetates with a non-coordinating aryl-methyl pendant arm (benzyl in NBzIDA, p-tolyl in MEBIDA and furfuryl in FurIDA) whereas HBAP, HCy5ade, HCy6ade and HdimAP are N(6)-substituted adenine derivatives with a N-benzyl, N-cyclopentyl, N-cyclohexyl or two N-methyl groups, respectively. Regardless of the molecular (1-4) or polymeric (5-6) nature of the studied compounds, the Cu(II) centre exhibits a type 4+1 coordination where the tridentate IDA-like chelators adopt a mer-conformation. In 1-5 the N(6)-R-adenines use their most stable tautomer H(N9)adenine-like, and molecular recognition consists of the cooperation of the CuN3(purine) bond and the intra-molecular interligand N9H···O(coordinated carboxy) interaction. In contrast, N(6),N(6)-dimethyl-adenine shows the rare tautomer H(N3)dimAP in 6, so that the molecular recognition with the Cu(NBzIDA) chelate consist of the CuN9 bond and the N3H···O intra-molecular interligand interaction. Contrastingly to the cytokinin activity found in the free ligands HBAP (natural cytokinin), HCy5ade and HCy6ade, the corresponding Cu(II) ternary complexes did not show any activity.

Abstract
This chapter provides a review of the literature on structural information from crystal structures determined by X-ray diffractometry of cadmium(II) complexes containing ligands of potential biological interest. These ligands fall into three broad classes, (i) those containing N-donors such as purine or pyrimidine bases and derivatives of adenine, guanine or cytosine, (ii) those containing carboxylate groups such as α-amino acids, in particular the twenty essential ones, the water soluble vitamins (B-complex) or the polycarboxylates of EDTA type ligands, and (iii) S-donors such as thiols/thiolates or dithiocarbamates. A crystal and molecular structural analysis has been carried out for some representative complexes of these ligands, specifically addressing the coordination mode of ligands, the coordination environment of cadmium and, in some significant cases, the intermolecular interactions.

Abstract
7-Deaza-8-aza-adenine, namely 4-aminopyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine (H4app), is a bioisoster of adenine (Hade) resulting from the translocation of N7 and C8 atoms on the purine moiety. With the aim of studying the influence of this translocation on the metal binding abilities of H4app, we have prepared and structurally characterized two ternary copper(II) complexes having H4app and one N-benzyl-iminodiacetate chelator (MEBIDA or FBIDA, with a methyl or fluoro group in para- of the benzyl aromatic ring): [Cu(2)(MEBIDA)(2)(μ(2)-N1,N8-H4app)(H(2)O)(2)]·4H(2)O (1) and [Cu(4)(FBIDA)(4)(μ(2)-N8,N9-H4app)(2)(H(2)O)]·3.5H(2)O (2). Furthermore, thermal, spectral, and magnetic properties have been also investigated. In 1, H(N9)4app is disordered over two equally pondered positions and the μ(2)-N1,N8 coordination mode is assisted by N6-H···O and N9-H···O intramolecular interactions, respectively. The acyclic nonlinear molecular topology of 2 is strongly influenced by two intramolecular H-bonding interactions (O-H···O-carboxylate) involving the apical aqua ligand of a terminal Cu(II) atom. Thus, both compounds have in common the Cu-N8 bond. In order to better understand our limited structural information, DFT calculations for the individual tautomers of H4app as well as mononuclear Cu(II) model systems have been carried out. According to previous results, we conclude that H(N9)4app is the most stable tautomer followed by H(N8)4app. When N9 and N8 are metalated, then the tautomer H(N1)4app can come into play as observed in compound 2. Likewise, the findings concerning compound 1 suggest that the formation of a Cu-N1 bond in H4app results was favored compared to neutral adenine, for which only one case has been reported with such coordination despite the large variety of related Cu(II)-Hade described in the literature.
