Experimental and theoretical studies of pH-responsive iridium(III) complexes of azole and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands

A series of nine luminescent iridium(III) complexes with pH-responsive imidazole and benzimidazole ligands have been prepared and characterized. The first series of complexes were of the form [Ir(ppy)2(N^N)]+ or [Ir(ppy)2(C^N)]+ (where ppy is 2-phenylpyridine and N^N is 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole or 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole and C^N represents a pyridyl-triazolylidene-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligand). For these complexes, the benzimidazole group was either unsubstituted or substituted with electron-withdrawing (Cl) or electron-donating (Me) groups. The second series of complexes were of the form [Ir(phbim)2(N^N)]+ or [Ir(phbim)2(C^N)]+ (where phbim is 2-phenylbenzimidazole and N^N is either 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline and C^N is either a pyridyl-imidazolylidene or pyridyl-triazolylidene N-heterocyclic carbene ligand). UV-visible and photoluminescence pH titration studies showed that changing the protonation state of these complexes results in significant changes in the photoluminescence emission properties. The pKa values of prepared complexes were estimated from the spectroscopic pH titration data and these values show that the nature of the pH-sensitive ligands (either main or ancillary ligands) resulted in a significant capacity to modulate the pKa values for these compounds with values ranging from 5.19-11.22. Theoretical investigations into the nature of the electronic transitions for the different protonation states of compounds were performed and the results were consistent with the experimental results.

A theoretical study on the second-order nonlinear optical properties of Pt(II) bis-acetylide complexes: substituent and redox effects

Density functional theory studies on the geometric and electronic structures, UV-vis absorption spectra, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of four-coordinate Pt(II) bis-acetylide complexes, cis-[Pt(CNtBu)(ADC)(CCR)2] , have been employed. The effects of ligand variation and the single electron redox process on the structures and NLO response of complexes have also been investigated. It shows that the variations of the ligand and electron have little effect on the geometries of the complexes, but there is a significant effect on their electronic structures and NLO responses. The introduction of a single -NO2 group in acetylide ligands increases the first hyperpolarizability of complex 12 times, while one electron lost in five complexes enhances the first hyperpolarizability 496 times at the most. Both methods are considered effective ways for improving the NLO response of Pt(II) bis-acetylide complexes. Based on the analysis of the electronic and optical properties of fifteen studied complexes, the increase of NLO response is mainly ascribed to strong oscillator strengths, lower electron transition energy, and well-directed effective charge transfer. This work reveals some underlying relationships between the NLO responses and electronic structures of complexes, which is helpful for the design and synthesis of high-performance NLO materials of Pt(II) bis-acetylide complexes.

Positive impact of chromophore flexibility on the efficiency of red thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials

Rigid electron donors (D) and acceptors (A) have been widely used in recent years for the construction of D-A type thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. However, the chromophore robustness does not always make a positive contribution to the high efficiency of TADF materials. Here, the comparison study of two D-A type red TADF compounds (PT-TPA and PT-Az) demonstrated, for the first time, the positive impact of chromophore flexibility on the efficiency of TADF materials. In PT-Az, the rotation of terminal phenyl groups is restrained by an ethylene linker, leading to its inferior photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). In contrast, PT-TPA with free rotation of the phenyl groups showed a low reorganization energy and a large transition dipole moment for the S₁→ S₀ transition, which resulted in a high fluorescence radiative decay rate. As a result, the optimized devices based on PT-TPA gave a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 29.7% (632 nm) when doped in a single host and an EQE of 28.8% (648 nm) in an exciplex host. This study provided an insight into the impact of chromophore flexibility on the photophysical properties and device efficiency of TADF materials, and these results may provide valuable guidance for the molecular design of efficient emitters.

Utilization of a Pt(ii) di-yne chromophore incorporating a 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-diyl spacer as a chelate to synthesize a green and red emitting d-f-d heterotrinuclear complex

A new heterotrinuclear (d-f-d) complex [Eu(btfa)₃1c] (btfa = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione and 1c = [(Ph)(Et₃P)₂Pt-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-R-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Pt(Et₃P)₂(Ph)] (R = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-diyl) has been synthesized by utilizing the N,N-donor sites of the organometallic chromophore. The complex was characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. Photophysical properties of the complex were analysed in detail using both steady-state and time-resolved emission and excitation spectroscopy. The optical absorption spectrum of the complex is dominated by the spin allowed π-π* transitions of the btfa and 1c units in the UV-visible region (200-418 nm) and thus is excitable over a wide range of wavelengths across the UV into the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex displays typical red Eu(iii) emission when excited at 345 nm. However, it also shows green emission when excited at 464 nm and, thus could be an interesting candidate for full colour display applications. The change in the colour could be a result of the high value of the energy back-transfer rate (6.73 × 10⁵ s^-1) from the triplet state of the organometallic chromophore to the ⁵D₁ state of Eu(iii). Judd-Ofelt (J-O) intensity parameters (Ω₂ and Ω₄), radiative (A_R), non-radiative (A_R) decay rates and intrinsic quantum yield (Q) have been calculated.

Ultrafast excited state relaxation dynamics in a heteroleptic Ir(iii) complex, fac-Ir(ppy)2(ppz), revealed by femtosecond X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

The experimental and calculation results demonstrate that the ³ML_ppzCT state generated by the spin-forbidden transition rapidly relaxes to ³ML_ppyCT through internal conversion process with a time constant of ∼450 fs.

Insulated conjugated bimetallopolymer with sigmoidal response by dual self-controlling system as a biomimetic material

Biological systems are known to spontaneously adjust the functioning of neurotransmitters, ion channels, and the immune system, being promoted or regulated through allosteric effects or inhibitors, affording non-linear responses to external stimuli. Here we report that an insulated conjugated bimetallopolymer, in which Ru(II) and Pt(II) complexes are mutually connected with insulated conjugations, exhibits phosphorescence in response to CO gas. The net profile corresponds to a sigmoidal response with a dual self-controlling system, where drastic changes were exhibited at two threshold concentrations. The first threshold for activation of the system is triggered by the depolymerization of the non-radiative conjugated polymer to luminescent monomers, while the second one for regulation is triggered by the switch in the rate-determining step of the Ru complex. Such a molecular design with cooperative multiple transition metals would provide routes for the development of higher-ordered artificial molecular systems bearing bioinspired responses with autonomous modulation.

Rational design of quinoxaline-based bipolar host materials for highly efficient red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

Two novel bipolar carbazole/diphenylquinoxaline-based host materials 3-(2,3-diphenylquinoxalin-6-yl)-9-phenyl-9H-carbazole (M1) and 3-(4-(2,3-diphenylquinoxalin-6-yl)phenyl)-9-phenyl-9H-carbazole (M2) have been rationally designed and synthesized. The phenyl spacer between the functionalized quinoxaline moiety and the carbazole moiety is also introduced to investigate its influence on their photophysical properties. The chemical structures, and thermal, photophysical and electrochemical properties of the two host materials were characterized and explored in detail. Red phosphorescent light-emitting diodes with M1 and M2 as hosts were prepared to explore their electroluminescent properties. Both M1 and M2 host-based red devices exhibit outstanding electroluminescent performance. For example, two red devices all realize good red emission with the maximum at 594 nm, the maximum external quantum efficiency and luminance can reach 14.66% and 28 619 cd m^-2 for M1-based devices and 15.07% and 28 818 cd m^-2 for M2-based devices, indicating compounds M1 and M2 designed in this work have potential applications in the development of high-performance monochrome and white OLEDs.

Radical-Based Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Maximum External Quantum Efficiency of 10.6

A new luminescent radical, tris-2,4,6-trichlorophenylmethyl-1,5-diazarcarbazole (TTM-DACz), was synthesized and characterized. The photoluminescence quantum yield of TTM-DACz in solid 1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)benzene matrix film (5 wt %) is as high as 57.0%. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing TTM-DACz as the emitter were fabricated. By rational design of the device structure and host-guest doping system, external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 10.6% of the optimized device with a red CIE chromaticity of (0.62, 0.36) was obtained, which is among the highest values for red OLEDs using nonphosphorescent materials as the emitters. This work will accelerate the development of luminescent radical materials for high-performance OLEDs.

High-Performance Organic Electroluminescence: Design from Organic Light-Emitting Materials to Devices

Organic electroluminescence is considered as the most competitive alternative for the future solid-state displays and lighting techniques owing to many advantages such as self-luminescence, high efficiency, high contrast, high color rendering index, ultra-thin thickness, transparency, flat and flexibility, etc. The development of high-performance organic electroluminescence has become the continuing focus of research. In this personal account, a brief overview of representative achievements in our study on the design of highly efficient novel organic light-emitting materials (including fluorescent materials, phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes and conjugated polymers bearing phosphorescent iridium(III) complex) and high-performance device structures together with working principles are given. At last, we will give some perspectives on this fascinating field, and also try to provide some potential directions of research on the basis of the current stage of organic electroluminescence.

A simple zinc(ii) complex that features multi-functional luminochromism induced by reversible ligand dissociation

Achieving yellow emission by varying the donor/acceptor units in rod-shaped fluorenyl-alkynyl based π-conjugated oligomers and their binuclear gold(i) alkynyl complexes

Fluorenyl-alkynyl based π-conjugated rod-shaped oligomers bearing different central aromatic moieties and functionalizable di-alkynyl termini, such as H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH1), H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btz-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH2) and H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btd-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH3) where Fl = 9,9-dioctylfluorene, Btz = N-hexylbenzotriazole, and Btd = benzothiadiazole, were successfully synthesized by a Pd(0) catalyzed Stille coupling protocol. Electron withdrawing benzothiadiazole and benzotriazole as strong to moderate acceptors and fluorene as the donor have been incorporated to adjust the Donor-Acceptor (D-A) strength for fine-tuning the bandgap (E_g) as well as the emission wavelength. The corresponding digold(i) σ-complexes (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM1), (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btz-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM2) and (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btd-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM3) have also been prepared by a reaction of Au(PPh₃)Cl and methanolic NaOMe in DCM with the corresponding alkynyl functionalized oligomers to take advantage of the heavy-atom effect on their emissive properties. The synthesized rod-shaped π-conjugated fluorene based oligomers and their binuclear Au(i) σ-complexes have been unambiguously characterized by various spectroscopic tools such as FTIR and multinuclear NMR as well as MALDI-TOF and CHN analyses. The absorption and emission spectral studies exhibited a progressive red shift with increasing the electron withdrawing character of the central aromatic unit. The rod-like oligomers having alkynyl termini and the corresponding digold(i) complexes are found to be blue, cyan and yellow emissive, demonstrating the fine-tuning of the emission wavelength. Most importantly, the fluorene based π-conjugated yellow light emitters OH3 and OM3 are successfully achieved by varying the donor/acceptor moiety to the fluorenyl-alkynyl backbone. The digold(i) diacetylide organometallic wires exhibit phosphorescence at 77 K in degassed CH₂Cl₂ due to the efficient intersystem crossing from the S₁ to the T₁ excited state as induced by heavy atoms.

Dispiro and Propellane: Novel Molecular Platforms for Highly Efficient Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

The incorporation of spatially oriented aromatic motifs in rigid molecular platforms is of great interest for the design of organic electronic materials. These structures can create unusual packing patterns and charge transport properties in the solid state which are not possible for simple planar structures. Herein, we showed that the novel dispiro and propellane motifs were successfully used as robust molecular platforms for the construction of host materials (TPA, Cz, SF, and SO). The propellane derivative with three functional groups arranged in the staggered conformation was studied for the first time as the host for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The green and red phosphorescent OLEDs hosted by these dispiro and propellane derivatives exhibited excellent electroluminescence performance. Particularly, the red OLED hosted by the propellane-type SF achieved maximum efficiencies of 47.3 cd A^-1, 40.2 lm W^-1, and 26.6% and 97.6 cd A^-1, 77.8 lm W^-1, and 27.0% for the green OLED without any light out-coupling enhancement. These results suggest that the dispiro and propellane molecular platforms have great potential in the construction of OLED materials.

Efficient bluish green electroluminescence of iridium complexes with good electron mobility

Two efficient bluish green iridium complexes with good electron mobility were applied in efficient OLEDs, showing a maximum current efficiency of 71.18 cd A⁻¹ and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 27.7%.

Highly Efficient Red and White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency beyond 20% by Employing Pyridylimidazole-Based Metallophosphors

Two highly efficient red neutral iridium(III) complexes, Ir1 and Ir2, were rationally designed and synthesized by selecting two pyridylimidazole derivatives as the ancillary ligands. Both Ir1 and Ir2 show nearly the same photoluminescence emission with the maximum peak at 595 nm (shoulder band at about 638 nm) and achieve high solution quantum yields of up to 0.47 for Ir1 and 0.57 for Ir2. Employing Ir1 and Ir2 as emitters, the fabricated red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show outstanding performance with the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency (CE), and power efficiency (PE) of 20.98%, 33.04 cd/A, and 33.08 lm/W for the Ir1-based device and 22.15%, 36.89 cd/A, and 35.85 lm/W for the Ir2-based device, respectively. Furthermore, using Ir2 as red emitter, a trichromatic hybrid white OLED, showing good warm white emission with low correlated color temperature of <2200 K under the voltage of 4-6 V, was fabricated successfully. The white device also realizes excellent device efficiencies with the maximum EQE, CE, and PE reaching 22.74%, 44.77 cd/A, and 46.89 lm/W, respectively. Such high electroluminescence performance for red and white OLEDs indicates that Ir1 and Ir2 as efficient red phosphors have great potential for future OLED displays and lightings applications.

The trans-Bis(p-thioetherphenylacetynyl)bis(phosphine)platinum(II) Ligands: A Step towards Predictability and Crystal Design

Two organometallic ligands L1 (trans-[p-MeSC₆H₄C≡C-Pt(PR₃)₂-C≡CC₆H₄SMe; R = Me]) and L2 (R = Et) react with CuX salts (X = Cl, Br, I) in MeCN to form one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers (CPs). The clusters formed with copper halide can either be step cubane Cu₄I₄, rhomboids Cu₂X₂, or simply CuI. The formed CPs with L1, which is less sterically demanding than L2, exhibit a crystallization solvent molecule (MeCN), whereas those formed with L2 do not incorporate MeCN molecules in the lattice. These CPs were characterized by X-ray crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, IR, Raman, absorption, and emission spectra as well as photophysical measurements in the presence and absence of crystallization MeCN molecules for those CPs with the solvent in the lattice (i.e., [(Cu₄I₄)L1·MeCN] _n (CP1), [(Cu₂Br₂)L1·2MeCN] _n (CP3), and [(Cu₂Cl₂)L1·MeCN] _n (CP5)). The crystallization molecules were removed under vacuum to evaluate the porosity of the materials by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (N₂ at 77 K). The 2D CP shows a reversible type 1 adsorption isotherm for both CO₂ and N₂, indicative of microporosity, whereas the 1D CPs do not capture more solvent molecules or CO₂.
