Abstract
Aerobic organisms involve dioxygen-activating iron enzymes to perform various metabolically relevant chemical transformations. Among these enzymes, mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes reductively activate dioxygen to catalyze diverse biological oxidations, including oxygenation of C-H and C═C bonds and C-C bond cleavage with amazing selectivity. Several non-heme enzymes utilize organic cofactors as electron sources for dioxygen reduction, leading to the generation of iron-oxygen intermediates that act as active oxidants in the catalytic cycle. These unique enzymatic reactions influence the design of small molecule synthetic compounds to emulate enzyme functions and to develop bioinspired catalysts for performing selective oxidation of organic substrates with dioxygen. Selective electron transfer during dioxygen reduction on iron centers of synthetic models by a sacrificial reductant requires appropriate design strategies. Taking lessons from the role of enzyme-cofactor complexes in the selective electron transfer process, our group utilized ternary iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes supported by polydentate ligands for dioxygen reduction and bioinspired oxidations. This Account focuses on the role of coordinated sacrificial reductants in the selective electron transfer for dioxygen reduction by iron complexes and highlights the versatility of iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes in affecting dioxygen-dependent oxidation/oxygenation reactions. The iron(II)-coordinated α-hydroxy acid anions undergo two-electron oxidative decarboxylation concomitant with the generation of reactive iron-oxygen oxidants. A nucleophilic iron(II)-hydroperoxo species was intercepted in the decarboxylation pathway. In the presence of a Lewis acid, the O-O bond of the nucleophilic oxidant is heterolytically cleaved to generate an electrophilic iron(IV)-oxo-hydroxo oxidant. Most importantly, the oxidants generated with or without Lewis acid can carry out cis-dihydroxylation of alkenes. Furthermore, the electrophilic iron-oxygen oxidant selectively hydroxylates strong C-H bonds. Another electrophilic iron(IV)-oxo oxidant, generated from the iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes in the presence of a protic acid, carries out C-H bond halogenation by using a halide anion. Thus, different metal-oxygen intermediates could be generated from dioxygen using a single reductant, and the reactivity of the ternary complexes can be tuned using external additives (Lewis/protic acid). The catalytic potential of the iron(II)-α-hydroxy complexes in performing O2-dependent oxygenations has been demonstrated. Different factors that govern the reactivity of iron-oxygen oxidants from ternary iron(II) complexes are presented. The versatile reactivity of the oxidants provides useful insights into developing catalytic methods for the selective incorporation of oxidized functionalities under environmentally benign conditions using aerial oxygen as the terminal oxidant.

Abstract
As one of the most accumulative toxic heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) poses a major threat to human health. Bacterial siderophores, as small molecules with metal-absorbing ability, have great potential activity for Cd-reduction. In this study, the siderophore-producing bacterialstrain FCH-CR2 was isolated from a high-Cd contaminated soil using the CAS method. Leclercia adecarboxylata was identified through 16S rRNA sequence, homology analysis, colony morphology, physiological and biochemical tests. A siderophore, catechol type 2,3-dihydroxy-N-benzoyl-l-serine (DHBS) secreted by FCH-CR2, was purified using RP-HPLC and identified by LC-MS/MS. Intraperitoneal injection of DHBS significantly increased fecal Cd levels, and reduced Cd accumulation in organs. In density flooding theory (DFT) analysis, DHBS may bind to Cd via the hydroxyl site on the benzene ring. Besides, the isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) assay revealed that the formation of Cd-DHBS is a spontaneous and endothermic reaction with ΔG = -21.4 kJ/mol and ΔH = 1.51 ± 0.142 kJ/mol.

Abstract
Scale not only affects the taste and color of water, but also increases the risks of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases associated with drinking it. As a popular beverage, tea is rich many substances that have considerable potential for scale inhibition, including protein, tea polyphenols and organic acids. In this study, the effect of tea brewing on scale formation was explored. It was found that the proteins, catechins and organic acids in tea leaves could be released when the green tea was brewed in water with sufficient hardness and alkalinity. The tea-released protein was able to provide carboxyl groups to chelate with calcium ions (Ca2+), preventing the Ca2+ from reacting with the carbonate ions (CO32-). The B rings of catechins were another important structure in the complexation of Ca2+ and magnesium ions (Mg2+). The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the organic acids was able to form five-membered chelating rings with Ca2+ and Mg2+, resulting in a significant decrease in Ca2+ from 100.0 to 60.0 mg/L. Additionally, the hydrogen ions (H+) provided by the organic acids consumed and decreased the alkalinity of the water from 250.0 to 131.4 mg/L, leading to a remarkable reduction in pH from 8.93 to 7.73. It further prevented the bicarbonate (HCO3-) from producing CO32- when the water was heated. The reaction of the tea constituents with the hardness and alkalinity inhibited the formation of scale, leading to a significant decrease in turbidity from 10.6 to 1.4 NTU. Overall, this study provides information to help build towards an understanding of the scale inhibition properties of tea and the prospects of tea for anti-scaling in industrial applications.

Abstract
By adjusting the pH values of the solutions, binuclear, tetranuclear and hexadecanuclear glycolato thio- and oxomolybdenum(V/IV) complexes [MoV2O2(μ2-O)(μ2-S)(Hglyc)2(Hpz)2]·H2O (1, H2glyc = glycolic acid, Hpz = pyrazole), (Hdpa)[MoV2O2(μ2-S)2(Hglyc)(glyc)(H2O)] (2, dpa = 2,2'-dipyridylamine), (Hdpa)4[MoV4O4(μ3-O)2(μ2-S)2(glyc)2(S2O3)2] (3) and Na2[MoIV4MoV12O12(μ2-O)6(μ2-OH)2(μ3-O)12(glyc)4(Hpz)4(pz)8]·28H2O (4) have been obtained successfully. Here the glycolates existed in varying aggregates with different degrees of protonation and deprotonation in 1-4. The stable formations of 1 and 2 are attributed to strong hydrogen bonds formed between the molecules. In particular, the asymmetric unit in 2 is a tetramer linked by hydrogen bonding [2.574(9) Å] between α-hydroxy and α-alkoxy groups for further construction of unsaturated penta-coordination environments. Moreover, deprotonated glycolates act as bridging ligands to form tetra- and hexadecanuclear compounds 3 and 4, respectively. The smallest unit in 4 exhibits mixed valences of 4+ and 5+ simultaneously, where its gas adsorption experiments manifest that 4 is obviously beneficial for O2 and CO2 compared with no adsorption of N2, CH4 and H2 at different pressures.

Ring Opening Polymerization of Lactides and Lactones by Multimetallic Titanium Complexes Derived from the Acids Ph2C(X)CO2H (X = OH, NH2). Catalysts 2022. Abstract
The reactions of the titanium alkoxide [Ti(OR)4] (R = Me, nPr, iPr, tBu) with the acids 2,2’-Ph2C(X)(CO2H), where X = OH and NH2, i.e., benzilic acid (2,2’-diphenylglycolic acid, L1H2), and 2,2’-diphenylglycine (L2H3), have been investigated. The variation of the reaction stoichiometry allows for the isolation of mono-, bi-, tri or tetra-metallic products, the structures of which have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The ability of the resulting complexes to act as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and r-lactide (r-LA) has been investigated. In the case of ε-CL, all catalysts except that derived from [Ti(OnPr)4] and L2H3, i.e., 7, exhibited an induction period of between 60 and 285 min, with 7 exhibiting the best performance (>99% conversion within 6 min). The PCL products are moderate- to high-molecular weight polymers. For r-LA, systems 1, 3, 4 and 7 afforded conversions of ca. 90% or more, with 4 exhibiting the fastest kinetics. The molecular weights for the PLA are somewhat higher than those of the PCL, with both cyclic and linear PLA products (end groups of OR/OH) identified. Comparative studies versus the [Ti(OR)4] starting materials were conducted, and although high conversions were achieved, the control was poor.

Abstract
An alkali-activated blend of aluminum cement and class F fly ash is an attractive solution for geothermal wells where cement is exposed to significant thermal shocks and aggressive environments. Set-control additives enable the safe cement placement in a well but may compromise its mechanical properties. This work evaluates the effect of a tartaric-acid set retarder on phase composition, microstructure, and strength development of a sodium-metasilicate-activated calcium aluminate/fly ash class F blend after curing at 85 °C, 200 °C or 300 °C. The hardened materials were characterized with X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray computed tomography, and combined scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and tested for mechanical strength. With increasing temperature, a higher number of phase transitions in non-retarded specimens was found as a result of fast cement hydration. The differences in the phase compositions were also attributed to tartaric acid interactions with metal ions released by the blend in retarded samples. The retarded samples showed higher total porosity but reduced percentage of large pores (above 500 µm) and greater compressive strength after 300 °C curing. Mechanical properties of the set cements were not compromised by the retarder.
