The application of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to homogeneous catalysis

Photo-activated Carbon dots (CDs) as Catalysts in the Knoevenagel Condensation: A Mechanistic Study by Dual-Mode Monitoring via ESI-MS

Carbon dots (CDs) obtained from 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (5-HMF) were activated by a 365 nm-UV irradiation source and employed in the Knoevenagel condensation to investigate their photocatalytic mechanism. To this end, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used to monitor the time progress of the condensation and follow the formation of the final product in positive and negative ion modes at once. The intervention of the superoxide radical anion in the photocatalytic mechanism of CDs was highlighted.

Intramolecular Phenyl Transfer from a Boronate to Lithium in the Gas Phase Reveals Crucial Role of Solvation in Transmetalations

In contrast to its behavior in solution, the adduct [(LiBr)(tBu)(Ph)Bpin]- (pin=pinacol) transfers its phenyl anion from boron to lithium upon fragmentation in the gas phase. Quantum chemical calculations predict this exceptional transmetalation to be exothermic relative to the separated reactants, [(tBu)(Ph)Bpin]- and LiBr, which we attribute to the high phenyl-anion affinity of the coordinatively unsaturated LiBr unit. The addition of a single molecule of tetrahydrofuran drastically reduces the phenyl-anion affinity of LiBr and thereby renders the transmetalation from boron to lithium endothermic. Thus, the probed system highlights the importance of solvation and ligation effects in transmetalations. For correctly predicting the direction, in which these reactions proceed, it is not sufficient to consider the electronegativities or partial charges of the involved metals or metalloids. Instead, the individual coordination states and their changes over the course of the reaction must be taken into account.

Ion mobility mass spectrometry uncovers regioselectivity in the carboxylate-assisted C-H activation of palladium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

Carboxylate-assisted Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation constitutes a mild and versatile synthetic tool to efficiently and selectively cleave inert C-H bonds. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to experimentally evaluate both reactivity and selectivity in such systems using mass spectrometry (MS) methods. The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) cations [(NHC)PdX]+, bearing as X- ligand bases commonly used to promote the C-H activation (carboxylates and bicarbonate), are generated in the gas-phase by ESI-MS. Their C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC is then studied using Collision Induced Dissociation (CID) experiments. Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IM)-MS is exploited to identify a number of regioisomers associated with the distinctive site selective C-H activations. It is demonstrated that such C-H activation concomitant with acetic acid release occurs from a mixture of activated [(NHC-H)Pd(CH3CO2H)]+ and non-activated [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ complexes. The identity of the X-type ligands (X = Cl-, carboxylates and bicarbonate) has a significant impact on the regioisomer branching ratio upon CID conditions. IM-MS in conjunction with a DFT mechanistic study is presented for the acetate-assisted C-H activation of the [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ cation featuring butyl and aryl as N-donor groups.

Properties of Metal Hydrides of the Iron Triad

Metal hydride complexes are essential intermediates in hydrogenation reactions. The hydride-donor ability determines the scope of use of these complexes. We present a new, simple mass-spectrometry method to study the hydride-donor ability of metal hydrides using a series of 18 iron, cobalt, and nickel complexes with N- and P-based ligands (L). The mixing of [(L)MII(OTf)2] with NaBH4 forms [(L)MII(BH4)]+ (M = Fe, Co, Ni) that can be detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Energy-resolved collision-induced dissociations of [(L)MII(BH4)]+ provide threshold energies (ΔECID) for the formations of [(L)MII(H)]+ that correlate well with the hydride donor ability of the metal hydride complexes. We studied the vibrational and electronic spectra of the generated metal hydrides, assigned their structure and spin state, and demonstrated a good correlation between ΔECID and the M-H stretching vibration frequencies. The ΔECID also correlates with reaction rates for hydride transfer reactivity in the gas phase and known reactivity trends in the solution phase.

Live Monitoring of Anionic Living Polymerizations by Electrospray-Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Anionic polymerizations are of exceptional practical importance, but difficult to analyze due to the high reactivity of the growing polymer chains. Here, we demonstrate that electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) permits direct observation of the active carbanionic intermediates formed in the anionic ring-opening polymerization of 1-cyanocyclopropanecarboxylate in tetrahydrofuran. This includes the identification of a side product, as well as real-time analysis of the polymerization reaction. From the mass spectra obtained, we can derive not only the mean molar mass and the polydispersity, but also the rate constants for the initiation and the individual propagation steps. The initiation proceeds significantly faster than the propagation steps. Accordingly, the examined reaction corresponds to a living polymerization, as we also confirmed by additional control experiments. Besides giving detailed insight into the reaction system probed here, we also expect the presented methodology to make possible the in-situ analysis of further anionic polymerizations.

Mechanism-Guided Design of Robust Palladium Catalysts for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Polyols

The palladium complex [(L₁)Pd(μ-OAc)]₂[OTf]₂ (L₁ = neocuproine) is a selective catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of vicinal polyols to α-hydroxyketones, but competitive oxidation of the ligand methyl groups limits the turnover number and necessitates high Pd loadings. Replacement of the neocuproine ligand with 2,2'-biquinoline ligands was investigated as a strategy to improve catalyst performance and explore the relationship between ligand structure and reactivity. Evaluation of [(L₂)Pd(μ-OAc)]₂[OTf]₂ (L₂ = 2,2'-biquinoline) as a catalyst for aerobic alcohol oxidation revealed a threefold enhancement in turnover number relative to the neocuproine congener, but a much slower rate. Mechanistic studies indicated that the slow rates observed with L₂ were a consequence of precipitation of an insoluble trinuclear palladium species─(L₂Pd)₃(μ-O)₂²⁺─formed during catalysis and characterized by high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Density functional theory was used to predict that a sterically modified biquinoline ligand, L₃ = 7,7'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-biquinoline, would disfavor the formation of the trinuclear (LPd)₃(μ-O)₂²⁺ species. This design strategy was validated as catalytic aerobic oxidation with [(L₃)Pd(μ-OAc)]₂[OTf]₂ is both robust and rapid, marrying the kinetics of the parent L₁-supported system with the high aerobic turnover numbers of the L₂-supported system. Changes in ligand structure were also found to modulate regioselectivity in the oxidation of complex glycoside substrates, providing new insights into structure-selectivity relationships with this class of catalysts.

Introducing Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry to Identify Site-Selective C-H Bond Activation in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Metal Complexes

The activation of C-H bonds in a selective manner still constitutes a major challenge from a synthetic point of view; thus, it remains an active area of fundamental and applied research. Herein, we introduce ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry-based (IM-MS) approaches to uncover site-selective C-H bond activation in a series of metal complexes of general formula [(NHC)LMCl]⁺ (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; L = pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*) or p-cymene; M = Pd, Ru, and Ir). The C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC ligand is promoted upon collision induced dissociation (CID). The identification of the resulting [(NHC-H)LM]⁺ isomers relies on the distinctive topology that such cyclometalated isomers adopt upon site-selective C-H bond activation. Such topological differences can be reliably evidenced as different mobility peaks in their respective CID-IM mass spectra. Alternative isomers are also identified via dehydrogenation at the Cp*/p-cymene (L) ligands to afford [(NHC)(L-H)M]⁺. The fragmentation of the ion mobility-resolved peaks is also investigated by CID-IM-CID. It enables the assignment of mobility peaks to the specific isomers formed from C(sp²)-H or C(sp³)-H bond activation and distinguishes them from the Cp*/p-cymene (L) dehydrogenation isomers. The conformational change of the NHC ligands upon C-H bond activation, concomitant with cyclometalation, is also discussed on the basis of the estimated collision cross section (CCS). A unique conformation change of the pyrene-tagged NHC members is identified that involves the reorientation of the NHC ring accompanied by a folding of the pyrene moiety.

Monitoring Reaction Intermediates to Predict Enantioselectivity Using Mass Spectrometry**

Enantioselective reactions are at the core of chemical synthesis. Their development mostly relies on prior knowledge, laborious product analysis and post‐rationalization by theoretical methods. Here, we introduce a simple and fast method to determine enantioselectivities based on mass spectrometry. The method is based on ion mobility separation of diastereomeric intermediates, formed from a chiral catalyst and prochiral reactants, and delayed reactant labeling experiments to link the mass spectra with the reaction kinetics in solution. The data provide rate constants along the reaction paths for the individual diastereomeric intermediates, revealing the origins of enantioselectivity. Using the derived kinetics, the enantioselectivity of the overall reaction can be predicted. Hence, this method can offer a rapid discovery and optimization of enantioselective reactions in the future. We illustrate the method for the addition of cyclopentadiene (CP) to an α,β‐unsaturated aldehyde catalyzed by a diarylprolinol silyl ether.

Characterization of selected organometallic compounds by electrospray ionization- and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry using different types of instruments: Possibilities and limitations

RATIONALE

Organometallic compounds are becoming increasingly important in their industrial application as catalysts. Mass spectrometry is an essential tool for the structural confirmation of such organometallics. Because the analysis of this class of molecules can be challenging, the ionization behavior and structural confirmation of selected transition metal catalysts are described in this work.

METHODS

The transition metal catalysts investigated were analyzed using classical vacuum MALDI reflectron TOF-MS as well as intermediate pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI QTOF-MS). Obtained mass spectra were compared with electrospray ionization MS (ESI-MS) already established for organometallic compounds, utilizing a QTOF mass spectrometer here. In addition, various sample preparations, including two selected MALDI matrices (trans-2-[3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2-methyl-2-propenylidene]malononitrile and 2,2':5',2″-terthiophene) with different solvent combinations for MALDI-MS measurements, were investigated in detail with respect to their correct isotope distribution of the molecular ions observed.

RESULTS

All investigated organometallic compounds were successfully identified by vacuum and intermediate pressure MALDI-MS. Accurate masses of ions related to molecular ion species (e.g., [M-Cl]⁺ , [M]⁺ , and [M + Na]⁺ ) could be determined by MALDI QTOF-MS measurements with a mass error of less than ±5 ppm for all compounds. Both investigated MALDI matrices performed equally on both instruments. The impact of the analyte/matrix solvent mixtures turned out to be crucial for a successful analysis of the investigated compounds. In contrast, ESI QTOF-MS yielded masses of ions related to molecular ion species in favorable cases.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of MALDI-MS for the structural confirmation of organometallic compounds is still not widely used. Nevertheless, this work showed that this analytical technique does have some benefits. The analysis of neutral catalysts proves to be quite useful, concluding that this technique provides a complement and/or an alternative to ESI-MS.

Regioselective Bond-Forming and Hydrolysis Reactions of Doubly Charged Vanadium Oxide Anions in the Gas Phase

The gas-phase reactivity of vanadium-containing dianions, NaV3O92− and its hydrated form H2NaV3O102−, were probed towards sulphur dioxide at room temperature by ion-molecule reaction (IMR) experiments in the collision cell of an ion trap mass spectrometer. The sequential addition of two SO2 molecules to the NaV3O92− dianion leads to the breakage of the stable V3O9 backbone, resulting in a charge separation process with the formation of new V-O and S-O bonds. On the contrary, the H2NaV3O102− hydroxide species reacts with SO2, promoting regioselective hydrolysis and bond-forming processes, the latter similar to that observed for the NaV3O92− reactant anion. Kinetic analysis shows that these reactions are fast and efficient with rate constants of the 10−9 (±30) cm3 s−1 molecule−1 order of magnitude.

Toward Totally Defined Nanocatalysis: Deep Learning Reveals the Extraordinary Activity of Single Pd/C Particles

Homogeneous catalysis is typically considered "well-defined" from the standpoint of catalyst structure unambiguity. In contrast, heterogeneous nanocatalysis often falls into the realm of "poorly defined" systems. Supported catalysts are difficult to characterize due to their heterogeneity, variety of morphologies, and large size at the nanoscale. Furthermore, an assortment of active metal nanoparticles examined on the support are negligible compared to those in the bulk catalyst used. To solve these challenges, we studied individual particles of the supported catalyst. We made a significant step forward to fully characterize individual catalyst particles. Combining a nanomanipulation technique inside a field-emission scanning electron microscope with neural network analysis of selected individual particles unexpectedly revealed important aspects of activity for widespread and commercially important Pd/C catalysts. The proposed approach unleashed an unprecedented turnover number of 10⁹ attributed to individual palladium on a nanoglobular carbon particle. Offered in the present study is the Totally Defined Catalysis concept that has tremendous potential for the mechanistic research and development of high-performance catalysts.

Homogeneous oxidation of C–H bonds with m-CPBA catalysed by a Co/Fe system: mechanistic insights from the point of view of the oxidant

A Co/Fe system efficiently catalyses the oxidation of C–H bonds with m-CPBA. The nitric acid promoter hampers the m-CPBA homolysis, suppressing the free radical activity. Experimental and computational data evidence a concerted oxidation mechanism.

Intracluster Sulphur Dioxide Oxidation by Sodium Chlorite Anions: A Mass Spectrometric Study

The reactivity of [NaL·ClO₂]⁻ cluster anions (L = ClO_x⁻; x = 0–3) with sulphur dioxide has been investigated in the gas phase by ion–molecule reaction experiments (IMR) performed in an in-house modified Ion Trap mass spectrometer (IT-MS). The kinetic analysis revealed that SO₂ is efficiently oxidised by oxygen-atom (OAT), oxygen-ion (OIT) and double oxygen transfer (DOT) reactions. The main difference from the previously investigated free reactive ClO₂⁻ is the occurrence of intracluster OIT and DOT processes, which are mediated by the different ligands of the chlorite anion. This gas-phase study highlights the importance of studying the intrinsic properties of simple reacting species, with the aim of elucidating the elementary steps of complex processes occurring in solution, such as the oxidation of sulphur dioxide.

ORGANOMETALLIC GAS-PHASE ION CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS: INSIGHTS INTO THE USE OF METAL CATALYSTS TO PROMOTE SELECTIVITY IN THE REACTIONS OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES

Carboxylic acids are valuable organic substrates as they are widely available, easy to handle, and exhibit structural and functional variety. While they are used in many standard synthetic protocols, over the past two decades numerous studies have explored new modes of metal-mediated reactivity of carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Mass spectrometry-based studies can provide fundamental mechanistic insights into these new modes of reactivity. Here gas-phase models for the following catalytic transformations of carboxylic acids and their derivatives are reviewed: protodecarboxylation; dehydration; decarbonylation; reaction as coordinated bases in C-H bond activation; remote functionalization and decarboxylative C-C bond coupling. In each case the catalytic problem is defined, insights from gas-phase studies are highlighted, comparisons with condensed-phase systems are made and perspectives are reached. Finally, the potential role for mechanistic studies that integrate both gas- and condensed-phase studies is highlighted by recent studies on the discovery of new catalysts for the selective decomposition of formic acid and the invention of the new extrusion-insertion class of reactions for the synthesis of amides, thioamides, and amidines. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Computational Discovery of Transition-metal Complexes: From High-throughput Screening to Machine Learning

Transition-metal complexes are attractive targets for the design of catalysts and functional materials. The behavior of the metal-organic bond, while very tunable for achieving target properties, is challenging to predict and necessitates searching a wide and complex space to identify needles in haystacks for target applications. This review will focus on the techniques that make high-throughput search of transition-metal chemical space feasible for the discovery of complexes with desirable properties. The review will cover the development, promise, and limitations of "traditional" computational chemistry (i.e., force field, semiempirical, and density functional theory methods) as it pertains to data generation for inorganic molecular discovery. The review will also discuss the opportunities and limitations in leveraging experimental data sources. We will focus on how advances in statistical modeling, artificial intelligence, multiobjective optimization, and automation accelerate discovery of lead compounds and design rules. The overall objective of this review is to showcase how bringing together advances from diverse areas of computational chemistry and computer science have enabled the rapid uncovering of structure-property relationships in transition-metal chemistry. We aim to highlight how unique considerations in motifs of metal-organic bonding (e.g., variable spin and oxidation state, and bonding strength/nature) set them and their discovery apart from more commonly considered organic molecules. We will also highlight how uncertainty and relative data scarcity in transition-metal chemistry motivate specific developments in machine learning representations, model training, and in computational chemistry. Finally, we will conclude with an outlook of areas of opportunity for the accelerated discovery of transition-metal complexes.

Chemical Reduction of NiII Cyclam and Characterization of Isolated NiI Cyclam with Cryogenic Vibrational Spectroscopy and Inert-Gas-Mediated High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Ni^II cyclam (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) is an efficient catalyst for the selective reduction of CO₂ to CO. A crucial elementary step in the proposed catalytic cycle is the coordination of CO₂ to a Ni^I cyclam intermediate. Isolation and spectroscopic characterization of this labile Ni^I species without solvent has proven to be challenging, however, and only partial IR spectra have previously been reported using multiple photon fragmentation of ions generated by gas-phase electron transfer to the Ni^II cyclam dication at 300 K. Here, we report a chemical reduction method that efficiently prepares Ni^I cyclam in solution. This enables the Ni^I complex to be transferred into a cryogenic photofragmentation mass spectrometer using inert-gas-mediated electrospray ionization. The vibrational spectra of the 30 K ion using both H₂ and N₂ messenger tagging over the range 800-4000 cm^-1 were then measured. The resulting spectra were analyzed with the aid of electronic structure calculations, which show strong method dependence in predicted band positions and small molecule activation. The conformational changes of the cyclam ligand induced by binding of the open shell Ni^I cation were compared with those caused by the spherical, closed-shell Li^I cation, which has a similar ionic radius. We also report the vibrational spectrum of a Ni^I cyclam complex with a strongly bound O₂ ligand. The cyclam ligand supporting this species exhibits a large conformational change compared to the complexes with weakly bound N₂ and H₂, which is likely due to significant charge transfer from Ni to the coordinated O₂.

Modular Ion Mobility Calibrants for Organometallic Anions Based on Tetraorganylborate Salts

Organometallics are widely used in catalysis and synthesis. Their analysis relies heavily on mass spectrometric methods, among which traveling-wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) has gained increasing importance. Collision cross sections (CCS) obtainable by TWIMS significantly aid the structural characterization of ions in the gas phase, but for organometallics, their accuracy has been limited by the lack of appropriate calibrants. Here, we propose tetraorganylborates and their alkali-metal bound oligomers [M_n-1(BR₄)_n]^- (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; R = aryl, Et; n = 1-6) as calibrants for electrospray ionization (ESI) TWIMS. These species chemically resemble typical organometallics and readily form upon negative-ion mode ESI of solutions of alkali-metal tetraorganylborates. By combining different tetraorganylborate salts, we have generated a large number of anions in a modular manner and determined their CCS values by drift-tube ion mobility spectrometry (DTIMS) (^DTCCS_He = 81-585, ^DTCCS_N2 = 130-704 Ų). In proof-of-concept experiments, we then applied these ^DTCCS values to the calibration of a TWIMS instrument and analyzed phenylcuprate and argentate anions, [Li_n-1M_nPh_2n]^- and [M_nPh_n+1]^- (M = Cu, Ag), as prototypical reactive organometallics. The ^TWCCS_N2 values derived from TWIMS measurements are in excellent agreement with those determined by DTIMS (<2% relative difference), demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed calibration scheme. Moreover, we used theoretical methods to predict the structures and CCS values of the anions considered. These predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results and give further insight into the trends governing the assembly of tetraorganylborate, cuprate, and argentate oligomers.

A "one pot" mass spectrometry technique for characterizing solution- and gas-phase photochemical reactions by electrospray mass spectrometry

The characterization of new photochemical pathways is important to progress the understanding of emerging areas of light-triggered inorganic and organic chemistry. In this context, the development of platforms to perform routine characterization of photochemical reactions remains an important goal for photochemists. Here, we demonstrate a new instrument that can be used to characterise both solution-phase and gas-phase photochemical reactions through electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The gas-phase photochemistry is studied by novel laser-interfaced mass spectrometry (LIMS), where the molecular species of interest is introduced to the gas-phase by ESI, mass-selected and then subjected to laser photodissociation in the ion-trap. On-line solution-phase photochemistry is initiated by LEDs prior to ESI-MS in the same instrument with ESI-MS again being used to monitor photoproducts. Two ruthenium metal carbonyls, [Ru(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2CO][PF6] and [Ru(η5-C5H5)(dppe)CO][PF6] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) are studied using this methodology. We show that the gas-phase photofragmentation pathways observed for the ruthenium complexes via LIMS (i.e. loss of CO + PPh3 ligands from [Ru(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2CO]+ and loss of just CO from [Ru(η5-C5H5)(dppe)CO]+) mirror the solution-phase photochemistry at 3.4 eV. The advantages of performing the gas-phase and solution-phase photochemical characterisations in a single instrument are discussed.

Detection and Structural Investigation of Elusive Palladium Hydride Intermediates Formed from Simple Metal Salts

The Mizoroki-Heck reaction is one of the most known and best studied catalytic transformations and has provided an outstanding driving force for the development of catalysis and synthetic applications. Three out of four classical Mizoroki-Heck catalytic cycle intermediates contain Pd-C bonds and are well known and studied in detail. However, a simple palladium hydride (which is formed after the product-releasing β-H-elimination step) is a kind of elusive intermediate in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction. In the present study, we performed a combined theoretical and mass spectrometry (MS) study of palladium hydride complexes [PdX₂H]^- (X = Cl, Br, and I), which are reactive intermediates in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction. Static and molecular dynamic calculations revealed that these species have a T-shaped structure with a trans-arrangement of halogen atoms. Other isomers of [PdX₂H]^- are unstable and easily rearrange into the T-shaped form or decompose. These palladium hydride intermediates were detected by MS in precatalyst activation using NaBH₄, Et₃N, and a solvent molecule as reducing agents. Online MS monitoring allowed the detection of [PdX₂H]^- species in the course of the Mizoroki-Heck reaction.

Unveiling the mechanism of N-methylation of indole with dimethylcarbonate using either DABCO or DBU as catalyst

Depending on the catalyst used, N-methylation of indole with dimethylcarbonate (DMC)-an environmentally friendly alkylation agent-yields different products. With 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), the reaction forms only N-methylated indole, but with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), both N-methylated and N-methoxycarbonylated indole are formed. Using direct ESI(+)-MS monitoring to collect actual snapshots of the changing ionic composition of the reaction solution, we report on the interception and characterization of key intermediates for such reactions. Although a mechanism has been proposed with methoxycarbonylated base as the key intermediate for both DBU and DABCO, the ESI(+)-MS data and B3LYP-D3/6-311+G** calculations suggest that the reaction of DMC with indole under either DABCO or DBU catalysis follows contrasting mechanisms.

How and Why to Investigate Multicomponent Reactions Mechanisms? A Critical Review

We review the most innovative efforts and greatest challenges faced when elucidating multicomponent reactions (MCRs) mechanisms. When compared to traditional reactions, the often two or more concurrent reactions pathways and the greater number of possible intermediates in MCRs turn their mechanistic investigation both a harder and trickier task. The common approaches used to investigate reaction mechanisms are often unable to clarify MCRs mechanisms; hence few but clever approaches are currently used to determine these mechanisms and to depict their key transformations. Their complexity has required most innovative approaches and the use of a number of unique techniques that have shed light over the favored pathway selected from the myriad of alternatives theoretically available for MCRs. This review focuses on the most successful efforts applied by a few leading groups to perform these puzzlingly investigations.

Palladium-catalyzed allene synthesis enabled by β-hydrogen elimination from sp2-carbon

The rational design based on a deep understanding of the present reaction mechanism is an important, viable approach to discover new organic transformations. β-Hydrogen elimination from palladium complexes is a fundamental reaction in palladium catalysis. Normally, the eliminated β-hydrogen has to be attached to a sp3-carbon. We envision that the hydrogen elimination from sp2-carbon is possible by using thoroughly designed reaction systems, which may offer a new strategy for the preparation of allenes. Here, we describe a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2,2-diarylvinyl bromides and diazo compounds, where a β-vinylic hydrogen elimination from allylic palladium intermediate is proposed to be the key step. Both aryl diazo carbonyl compounds and N-tosylhydrazones are competent carbene precursors in this reaction. The reaction mechanism is explored by control experiments, KIE studies and DFT calculations.

Mechanistic Study of Pd/NHC-Catalyzed Sonogashira Reaction: Discovery of NHC-Ethynyl Coupling Process

The product of a revealed transformation-NHC-ethynyl coupling-was observed as a catalyst transformation pathway in the Sonogashira cross-coupling, catalyzed by Pd/NHC complexes. The 2-ethynylated azolium salt was isolated in individual form and fully characterized, including X-ray analysis. A number of possible intermediates of this transformation with common formulae (NHC)_n Pd(C₂ Ph) (n=1,2) were observed and subjected to collision-induced dissociation (CID) and infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) experiments to elucidate their structure. Measured bond dissociation energies (BDEs) and IRMPD spectra were in an excellent agreement with quantum calculations for coupling product π-complexes with Pd⁰ . Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the observed multiple CID fragmentation pathways. An unconventional methodology to study catalyst evolution suggests the reported transformation to be considered in the development of new catalytic systems for alkyne functionalization reactions.

Charge-Tagged N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs): Revealing the Hidden Side of NHC-Catalysed Reactions through Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are key intermediates in a variety of chemical reactions. Owing to their transient nature, the interception and characterization of these reactive species have always been challenging. Similarly, the study of reaction mechanisms in which carbenes act as catalysts is still an active research field. This Minireview describes the contribution of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to the detection of charge-tagged NHCs resulting from the insertion of an ionic group into the molecular scaffold. The use of different mass spectrometric techniques, combined with the charge-tagging strategy, allowed clarification of the involvement of NHCs in archetypal reactions and the study of their intrinsic chemistry.

Mechanistic Study of Isotactic Poly(propylene oxide) Synthesis using a Tethered Bimetallic Chromium Salen Catalyst

Initial catalyst dormancy has been mitigated for the enantioselective polymerization of propylene oxide using a tethered bimetallic chromium(III) salen complex. A detailed mechanistic study provided insight into the species responsible for this induction period and guided efforts to remove them. High-resolution electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and density functional theory computations revealed that a μ-hydroxide and a bridged 1,2-hydroxypropanolate complex are present during the induction period. Kinetic studies and additional computation indicated that the μ-hydroxide complex is a short-lived catalyst arrest state, where hydroxide dissociation from one metal allows for epoxide enchainment to form the 1,2-hydroxypropanolate arrest state. While investigating anion dependence on the induction period, it became apparent that catalyst activation was the main contributor for dormancy. Using a 1,2-diol or water as chain transfer agents (CTAs) led to longer induction periods as a result of increased 1,2-hydroxyalkanolate complex formation. With a minor catalyst modification, rigorous drying conditions, and avoiding 1,2-diols as CTAs, the induction period was essentially removed.

Phenoxazinone synthase-like catalytic activity of novel mono- and tetranuclear copper(ii) complexes with 2-benzylaminoethanol

Three novel coordination compounds, [Cu(ca)2(Hbae)2] (1), [Cu(va)2(Hbae)2] (2) and [Cu4(va)4(bae)4]·H2O (3), have been prepared by self-assembly reactions of copper(ii) chloride (1 and 2) or tetrafluoroborate (3) and CH3OH (1 and 3) or CH3CN (2) solution of 2-benzylaminoethanol (Hbae) and cinnamic (Hca, 1) or valeric (Hva, 2 and 3) acid. Crystallographic analysis revealed that both 1 and 2 have mononuclear crystal structures, wherein the complex molecules are H-bonded forming extended supramolecular chains. The tetranuclear structure of 3 is based on the {Cu4(μ3-O)4} core, wherein the metal atoms are bound together by μ3 oxygen bridges from 2-benzylaminoethanol forming an overall cubane-like configuration. The strong hydrogen bonding in 1-3 leads to the joining of the neighbouring molecules into 1D chains. Concentration-dependent ESI-MS studies disclosed the equilibria between di-, tri- and tetranuclear species in solutions of 1-3. All three compounds act as catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of o-aminophenol to the phenoxazinone chromophore (phenoxazinone synthase-like activity), with the maximum reaction rates of 4.0 × 10-7, 2.5 × 10-7 and 2.1 × 10-7 M s-1 for 1, 2 and 3, respectively, supported by the quantitative yield of the product after 24 h. The dependence of the reaction rates on catalyst concentrations is evidence of reaction orders higher than one relative to the catalyst. Kinetic and ESI-MS data allowed us to assume that the tetranuclear species, originating from 1, 2 and 3 in solution, possess considerably higher activity than the species of lower nuclearity. Mechanistic and isotopic 18O-labelling experiments suggested that o-aminophenol coordinates to CuII species with the formation of reactive intermediates, while the oxygen from 18O2 is not incorporated into the phenoxazinone chromophore.

Photoexcited Pd(ii) auxiliaries enable light-induced control in C(sp3)-H bond functionalisation

Herein we report the photophysical and photochemical properties of palladacycle complexes derived from 8-aminoquinoline ligands, commonly used auxiliaries in C–H activation. Spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational studies reveal that visible light irradiation induces a mixed LLCT/MLCT charge transfer providing access to synthetically relevant Pd(iii)/Pd(iv) redox couples. The Pd(ii) complex undergoes photoinduced electron transfer with alkyl halides generating C(sp³)–H halogenation products rather than C–C bond adducts. Online photochemical ESI-MS analysis implicates participation of a mononuclear Pd(iii) species which promotes C–X bond formation via a distinct Pd(iii)/Pd(iv) pathway. To demonstrate the synthetic utility, we developed a general method for inert C(sp³)–H bond bromination, chlorination and iodination with alkyl halides. This new strategy in auxiliary-directed C–H activation provides predictable and controllable access to distinct reactivity pathways proceeding via Pd(iii)/Pd(iv) redox couples induced by visible light irradiation.

Visible light irradiation of 8-aminoquinoline Pd(ii) complexes initiates photoinduced electron transfer with alkyl halides, affording C–H halogenation over C–C bond adducts. A method for inert C(sp³)–H bond halogenation (Br, Cl and I) is reported.

Recent developments and emerging trends of mass spectrometric methods in plant hormone analysis: a review

Plant hormones are naturally occurring small molecule compounds which are present at trace amounts in plant. They play a pivotal role in the regulation of plant growth. The biological activity of plant hormones depends on their concentrations in the plant, thus, accurate determination of plant hormone is paramount. However, the complex plant matrix, wide polarity range and low concentration of plant hormones are the main hindrances to effective analyses of plant hormone even when state-of-the-art analytical techniques are employed. These factors substantially influence the accuracy of analytical results. So far, significant progress has been realized in the analysis of plant hormones, particularly in sample pretreatment techniques and mass spectrometric methods. This review describes the classic extraction and modern microextraction techniques used to analyze plant hormone. Advancements in solid phase microextraction (SPME) methods have been driven by the ever-increasing requirement for dynamic and in vivo identification of the spatial distribution of plant hormones in real-life plant samples, which would contribute greatly to the burgeoning field of plant hormone investigation. In this review, we describe advances in various aspects of mass spectrometry methods. Many fragmentation patterns are analyzed to provide the theoretical basis for the establishment of a mass spectral database for the analysis of plant hormones. We hope to provide a technical guide for further discovery of new plant hormones. More than 140 research studies on plant hormone published in the past decade are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the recent advances in mass spectrometry and sample pretreatment techniques in the analysis of plant hormone. The potential progress for further research in plant hormones analysis is also highlighted.

Ionic Pd/NHC Catalytic System Enables Recoverable Homogeneous Catalysis: Mechanistic Study and Application in the Mizoroki-Heck Reaction

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands are ubiquitously utilized in catalysis. A common catalyst design model assumes strong M-NHC binding in this metal-ligand framework. In contrast to this common assumption, we demonstrate here that lability and controlled cleavage of the M-NHC bond (rather than its stabilization) could be more important for high-performance catalysis at low catalyst concentrations. The present study reveals a dynamic stabilization mechanism with labile metal-NHC binding and [PdX₃ ]^- [NHC-R]⁺ ion pair formation. Access to reactive anionic palladium intermediates formed by dissociation of the NHC ligands and plausible stabilization of the molecular catalyst in solution by interaction with the [NHC-R]⁺ azolium ion is of particular importance for an efficient and recyclable catalyst. These ionic Pd/NHC complexes allowed for the first time the recycling of the complex in a well-defined form with isolation at each cycle. Computational investigation of the reaction mechanism confirms a facile formation of NHC-free anionic Pd in polar media through either Ph-NHC coupling or reversible H-NHC coupling. The present study formulates novel ideas for M/NHC catalyst design.

Gas-Phase Synthesis and Reactivity of Ligated Group 10 Ions in the Formal +1 Oxidation State

Electrospray ionization of the group 10 complexes [(phen)M(O₂CCH₃)₂] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, M = Ni, Pd, Pt) generates the cations [(phen)M(O₂CCH₃)]⁺, whose gas-phase chemistry was studied using multistage mass spectrometry experiments in an ion trap mass spectrometer with the combination of collision-induced dissociation (CID) and ion-molecule reactions (IMR). Decarboxylation of [(phen)M(O₂CCH₃)]⁺ under CID conditions generates the organometallic cations [(phen)M(CH₃)]⁺, which undergo bond homolysis upon a further stage of CID to generate the cations [(phen)M]^+· in which the metal center is formally in the +1 oxidation state. In the case of [(phen)Pt(CH₃)]⁺, the major product ion [(phen)H]⁺ was formed via loss of the metal carbene Pt=CH₂. DFT calculated energetics for the competition between bond homolysis and M=CH₂ loss are consistent with their experimentally observed branching ratios of 2% and 98% respectively. The IMR of [(phen)M]^+· with O₂, N₂, H₂O, acetone, and allyl iodide were examined. Adduct formation occurs for O₂, N₂, H₂O, and acetone. Upon CID, all adducts fragment to regenerate [(phen)M]^+·, except for [(phen)Pt(OC(CH₃)₂)]^+·, which loses a methyl radical to form [(phen)Pt(OCCH₃)]⁺ which upon a further stage of CID regenerates [(phen)Pt(CH₃)]⁺ via CO loss. This closes a formal catalytic cycle for the decomposition of acetone into CO and two methyl radicals with [(phen)Pt]^+· as catalyst. In the IMR of [(phen)M]^+· with allyl iodide, formation of [(phen)M(CH₂CHCH₂)]⁺ was observed for all three metals, whereas for M = Pt also [(phen)Pt(I)]⁺ and [(phen)Pt(I)₂(CH₂CHCH₂)]⁺ were observed. Finally, DFT calculated reaction energetics for all IMR reaction channels are consistent with the experimental observations.

Sequential Cross-Coupling/Annulation of ortho-Vinyl Bromobenzenes with Aromatic Bromides for the Synthesis of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds

A sequential cross-coupling/annulation of ortho-vinyl bromobenzenes with aromatic bromides was realized, providing a direct and modular approach to access polycyclic aromatic compounds. A vinyl-coordinated palladacycle was proposed as the key intermediate for this sequential process. Excellent chemoselectivity and regioselectivity were observed in this transformation. The practicability of this method is highlighted by its broad substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, and rich transformations associated with the obtained products.

Structural, kinetics and mechanistic studies of transfer hydrogenation of ketones catalyzed by chiral (pyridyl)imine nickel(ii) complexes

The chiral synthons (S-)-1-phenyl-N-(pyridine-2-yl)ethylidine)ethanamine (L1), (R-)-1phenyl-N-(pyridine-2-yl)ethylidine))ethanamine (L2) (S)-1-phenyl-N-(pyridine-2-yl methylene) ethanamine (L3), and (R)-1-phenyl-N-(pyridine-2-yl methylene) ethanamine (L4) were synthesized in good yields. Treatments of L1-L4 with NiBr₂(DME) and NiCl₂ precursor afforded dinuclear complexes [Ni₂(L1)₄-μ-Br₂]NiBr₄ (Ni1), [Ni₂(L2)₄-μ-Br₂]NiBr₄ (Ni2), [Ni₂(L3)₄-μBr₂]Br₂ (Ni3), [Ni₂(L4)₄-μ-Br₂]NiBr₄ (Ni4) and [Ni(L4)₂Cl₂] (Ni5). The identities of the compounds were established using NMR, FT-IR and EPR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, magnetic moments, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The dinuclear dibromide nickel complexes dissociate into mononuclear species in the presence of strongly coordinating solvents. Compounds Ni1-Ni5 displayed moderate catalytic activities in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of ketones, but with low enantiomeric excess (ee%). Both mercury and substoichiometric poisoning tests pointed to the homogeneous nature of the active species with the partial formation of catalytically active Ni(0) nanoparticles. Low resolution mass spectrometry analyses of the intermediates supported a dihydride mechanistic pathway for the transfer of hydrogenation reactions.

Step-by-step real time monitoring of a catalytic amination reaction

The multiple reaction monitoring mode of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer is used to examine the Buchwald-Hartwig amination reaction at 0.1% catalyst loading in real-time using sequential addition of reagents to probe the individual steps in the cycle. This is a powerful new method for probing reactions under realistic conditions.

Role of Ligand in the Selective Production of Hydrogen from Formic Acid Catalysed by the Mononuclear Cationic Zinc Complexes [(L)Zn(H)]+ (L=tpy, phen, and bpy)

A series of zinc-based catalysts was evaluated for their efficiency in decomposing formic acid into molecular hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the gas phase using quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry experiments. The effectiveness of the catalysts in the series [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ , where L=2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyrydine (bpy), was found to depend on the ligand used, which turned out to be fundamental in tuning the catalytic properties of the zinc complex. Specifically, [(tpy)Zn(H)]⁺ displayed the fastest reaction with formic acid proceeding by dehydrogenation to produce the zinc formate complex [(tpy)Zn(O₂ CH)]⁺ and H₂ . The catalysts [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ are reformed by decarboxylating the zinc formate complexes [(L)Zn(O₂ CH)]⁺ by collision-induced dissociation, which is the only reaction channel for each of the ligands used. The decarboxylation reaction was found to be reversible, since the zinc hydride complexes [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ react with carbon dioxide yielding the zinc formate complex. This reaction was again substantially faster for L=tpy than L=phen or bpy. The energetics and mechanisms of these processes were modelled using several levels of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental results are fully supported by the computational predictions.

Gas-Phase Reactions of the Group 10 Organometallic Cations, [(phen)M(CH3)]+ with Acetone: Only Platinum Promotes a Catalytic Cycle via the Enolate [(phen)Pt(OC(CH2)CH3)]+

Electrospray ionisation of the ligated group 10 metal complexes [(phen)M(O2CCH3)2] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) generates the cations [(phen)M(O2CCH3)]+, whose gas-phase chemistry was studied using multistage mass spectrometry experiments in an ion trap mass spectrometer with the combination of collision-induced dissociation (CID) and ion-molecule reactions (IMR). A new catalytic cycle has been discovered. In step 1, decarboxylation of [(phen)M(O2CCH3)]+ under CID conditions generates the organometallic cations [(phen)M(CH3)]+, which react with acetone to generate the [(phen)M(CH3)(OC(CH3)2)]+ adducts in competition with formation of the coordinated enolate for M = Pt (step 2). For M = Ni and Pd, the adducts regenerate [(phen)M(CH3)]+ upon CID. In the case of M = Pt, loss of methane is favored over loss of acetone and results in the formation of the enolate complex, [(phen)Pt(OC(CH2)CH3)]+. Upon further CID, both methane and CO loss can be observed resulting in the formation of the ketenyl and ethyl complexes [(phen)Pt(OCCH)]+ and [(phen)Pt(CH2CH3)]+ (step 3), respectively. In step 4, CID of [(phen)Pt(CH2CH3)]+ results in a beta-hydride elimination reaction to yield the hydride complex, [(phen)Pt(H)]+, which reacts with acetic acid to regenerate the acetate complex [(phen)Pt(O2CCH3)]+ and H2 in step 5. Thus, the catalytic cycle is formally closed, which corresponds to the decomposition of acetone and acetic acid into methane, CO, CO2, ethene and H2. All except the last step of the catalytic cycle are modelled using DFT calculations with optimizations of structures at the M06/SDD 6-31G(d) level of theory.

Heterometallic CoIIIZnII Schiff Base Catalyst for Mild Hydroxylation of C(sp3)–H Bonds of Unactivated Alkanes: Evidence for Dual Mechanism Controlled by the Promoter

The novel Schiff base complex [CoIIIZnIIL3Cl2]·CH3OH (1) was synthesized by interaction of zinc powder, cobalt(II) chloride and methanol solution of the pre-formed HL in air (HL is the product of condensation of o-vanillin and methylamine) and characterized by IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the heterometallic core of 1 the two metal centers are bridged by deprotonated phenoxy groups of the L− ligands with the cobalt-zinc separation of 3.123 Å. Catalytic investigations demonstrated a pronounced activity of 1 towards mild alkane oxidation with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA) as an oxidant and cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane (cis-1,2-DMCH) as the model substrate. The influence of the nature of different promoting agents of various acidities (from HOTf to pyridine) on the catalytic process was studied in detail and a pronounced activity of 1 in the presence of nitric acid promoter was found, also showing a high retention of stereoconfiguration of the substrate (>99% for cis-1,2-DMCH). The best achieved yield of tertiary cis-alcohol based on the oxidant was 61%, with a turnover number (TON) of 198 for nitric acid as promoter. The 18O-incorporations into the alcohols when the reactions were performed under 18O2 atmosphere using acetic and nitric acid promoters, suggest that the cis-1,2-DMCH hydroxylation proceeds by two distinct pathways, a non-stereoselective and a stereoselective one (with and without involvement of a long-lived free carbon radical, respectively). The former dominates in the case of acetic acid promoter and the latter is realized in the case of HNO3 promoter.

Identification of Active Sites and Structural Characterization of Reactive Ionic Intermediates by Cryogenic Ion Trap Vibrational Spectroscopy

Cryogenic ion trap vibrational spectroscopy paired with quantum chemistry currently represents the most generally applicable approach for the structural investigation of gaseous cluster ions that are not amenable to direct absorption spectroscopy. Here, we give an overview of the most popular variants of infrared action spectroscopy and describe the advantages of using cryogenic ion traps in combination with messenger tagging and vibrational predissociation spectroscopy. We then highlight a few recent studies that apply this technique to identify highly reactive ionic intermediates and to characterize their reactive sites. We conclude by commenting on future challenges and potential developments in the field.

Tuning the Biginelli reaction mechanism by the ionic liquid effect: the combined role of supported heteropolyacid derivatives and acidic strength

Herein, a combination of heteropolyacids and ionic liquids as a catalytic system was studied for the Biginelli multicomponent reaction; the positive ionic liquid effect associated with the acidic strength of zeolite-supported heteropolyacids made this combination an efficient catalytic system for the multicomponent synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one/thione derivatives. The acidic strength effect was evaluated, and a range was determined in which the reaction provided better results. The mechanism of the reaction was also investigated in the presence and absence of ionic liquids, and two features of paramount importance were revealed: the mechanism could be tuned to proceed through only one reaction path among three possibilities and the kinetics of the reaction was significantly faster in the presence of an ionic liquid.

Heteropolyacids and ionic liquid effect allowed tuning of the Biginelli reaction mechanism and synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one/thione derivatives in an efficient, recyclable fashion. The role of acidic strength and supported heteropolyacid is disclosed.

Mechanistic understanding of catalysis by combining mass spectrometry and computation

The combination of mass spectrometry and computational chemistry has been proven to be powerful for exploring reaction mechanisms. The former provides information of reaction intermediates, while the latter gives detailed reaction energy profiles.
