Abstract
Numerous industrial processes utilise gaseous chemical feedstocks to produce useful chemical products. Atmospheric and other small molecule gases, including anthropogenic waste products (e.g. carbon dioxide), can be viewed as sustainable building blocks to access value-added chemical commodities and materials. While transition metal complexes have been well documented in the reduction and transformation of these substrates, molecular complexes of the terrestrially abundant alkaline earth metals have also demonstrated promise with remarkable reactivity reported towards an array of industrially relevant gases over the past two decades. This review covers low oxidation state and hydrido group 2 complexes and their role in the reduction and transformation of a selection of important gaseous substrates towards value-added chemical products.

Abstract
The aluminacyclopropane K[Al(NON)(η-C2H4)] ([NON]2- = [O(SiMe2NDipp)2]2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) reacts with CO2 and iPrNCNiPr to afford ring-expanded products of C-C bond formation. The latter system undergoes a 1,3-silyl retro-Brook rearrangement of the NON-group, to afford the [NNO]2- ligand ([NNO]2- = [N(Dipp)SiMe2N(Dipp)SiMe2O]2-). The mechanism of transformation was examined by density functional theory (DFT).

Abstract
The activation and functionalization of carbon dioxide entails great interest related to its abundance, low toxicity and associated environmental problems. However, the inertness of CO2 has posed a challenge towards its efficient conversion to added-value products. In this review we discuss one of the strategies that have been widely used to capture and activate carbon dioxide, namely the use of donor-acceptor interactions by partnering a Lewis acidic and a Lewis basic fragment. This type of CO2 activation resembles that found in metalloenzymes, whose outstanding performance in catalytically transforming carbon dioxide encourages further bioinspired research. We have divided this review into three general sections based on the nature of the active sites: metal-free examples (mainly formed by frustrated Lewis pairs), main group-transition metal combinations, and transition metal heterobimetallic complexes. Overall, we discuss one hundred compounds that cooperatively activate carbon dioxide by donor-acceptor interactions, revealing a wide range of structural motifs.

Abstract
Nickel(II) dichloride complexes with a pyridine-chelated imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene py-ImPy ligand were developed as novel catalyst precursors for acrylate synthesis reaction from ethylene and carbon dioxide (CO2), a highly promising sustainable process in terms of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Two types of ImPy salts were prepared as new C,N-bidentate ligand precursors; py-ImPy salts (3, 4a–4e) having a pyridine group at C(5) on ImPy and a N-picolyl-ImPy salt (10) having a picolyl group at N atom on ImPy. Nickel(II) complexes such as py-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 (7, 8a–8e) and N-picolyl-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 (12) were synthesized via transmetalation protocol from silver(I) complexes, py-ImPyAgCl (5, 6a–6e) and N-picolyl-ImPyAgCl (11). X-ray diffraction analysis of nickel(II) complexes (7, 8b, 12) showed a monomeric distorted tetrahedral geometry and a six-membered chelate ring structure. py-ImPy ligands formed a more planar six-membered chelate with the nickel center than did N-picolyl-ImPy ligand. py-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 complexes (8a–8e) with tert-butyl substituents exhibited noticeable catalytic activity in acrylate synthesis from ethylene and CO2 (up to 108% acrylate). Interestingly, the use of additional additives including monodentate phosphines increased catalytic activity up to 845% acrylate (TON 8).

Abstract
By using a nickel complex with an N-phosphinomethyl-N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (NHC-P), the reducing ability and thermal stability of the complex were improved considerably compared to the previously reported bipyridine and bisphosphine complexes, and acrylate salt was prepared from ethylene and CO2 with the highest TON ever reported for nickel systems even without using metallic zinc. Oxidative cyclization of ethylene and CO2 on the NHC-P nickel complex was found to proceed very rapidly compared to previous systems.

Abstract
The mechanism of the Ni0 -catalyzed reductive carboxylation reaction of C(sp2 )-O and C(sp3 )-O bonds in aromatic esters with CO2 to access valuable carboxylic acids was comprehensively studied by using DFT calculations. Computational results revealed that this transformation was composed of several key steps: C-O bond cleavage, reductive elimination, and/or CO2 insertion. Of these steps, C-O bond cleavage was found to be rate-determining, and it occurred through either oxidative addition to form a NiII intermediate, or a radical pathway that involved a bimetallic species to generate two NiI species through homolytic dissociation of the C-O bond. DFT calculations revealed that the oxidative addition step was preferred in the reductive carboxylation reactions of C(sp2 )-O and C(sp3 )-O bonds in substrates with extended π systems. In contrast, oxidative addition was highly disfavored when traceless directing groups were involved in the reductive coupling of substrates without extended π systems. In such cases, the presence of traceless directing groups allowed for docking of a second Ni0 catalyst, and the reactions proceed through a bimetallic radical pathway, rather than through concerted oxidative addition, to afford two NiI species both kinetically and thermodynamically. These theoretical mechanistic insights into the reductive carboxylation reactions of C-O bonds were also employed to investigate several experimentally observed phenomena, including ligand-dependent reactivity and site-selectivity.

Abstract
CO2 conversion covers a wide range of possible application areas from fuels to bulk and commodity chemicals and even to specialty products with biological activity such as pharmaceuticals. In the present review, we discuss selected examples in these areas in a combined analysis of the state-of-the-art of synthetic methodologies and processes with their life cycle assessment. Thereby, we attempted to assess the potential to reduce the environmental footprint in these application fields relative to the current petrochemical value chain. This analysis and discussion differs significantly from a viewpoint on CO2 utilization as a measure for global CO2 mitigation. Whereas the latter focuses on reducing the end-of-pipe problem "CO2 emissions" from todays' industries, the approach taken here tries to identify opportunities by exploiting a novel feedstock that avoids the utilization of fossil resource in transition toward more sustainable future production. Thus, the motivation to develop CO2-based chemistry does not depend primarily on the absolute amount of CO2 emissions that can be remediated by a single technology. Rather, CO2-based chemistry is stimulated by the significance of the relative improvement in carbon balance and other critical factors defining the environmental impact of chemical production in all relevant sectors in accord with the principles of green chemistry.

Abstract
Abstract
The use of CO2 as a feedstock for chemical synthesis is considered as a viable alternative option to some traditional processes. One of the most interesting challenge for the industry is represented by the CO2 coupling with olefins to produce acrylate. Only recently, with the choice of suitable ligands and the use of a sacrificial base, a selective catalytic reaction was established by using Ni(0)-based complexes. The one-pot reaction, which leads to the highest TON (107 mol/mol Ni, in 20 h) reported so far, was successfully developed starting from Ni(0)-based precursors in the presence of disphosphine ligands, a large excess of base and of finely powdered zinc. In the present paper, we carried out the catalytic synthesis of sodium acrylate from CO2 and ethene, in one-pot, by using Ni(II)-chloride and Pd(II)-chloride phosphine-complexes as precatalyst. The reaction occurs under basic conditions and without adding any external reductants. The Ni(II) complexes lead to higher TON than the respective Pd(II) precursors and the best results are obtained by using diphosphines having high bite angles. Such catalysis is favored by aprotic and polar solvents in which a TON of 290 mol/mol Ni is reached by using the [NiCl2(dppp)] precursor in DMSO. Furthermore the TON could be increased by increasing the temperature, the base concentration and by using diphosphine ligands having high bite angle.

Abstract
The catalytic construction of benzimidazoles using CO2 as a carbon source represents a facile and sustainable approach to obtaining these valuable compounds. Herein, we describe the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed synthesis of benzimidazoles via cyclization of o-phenylenediamines with CO2 and PhSiH3. This metal-free catalytic route achieves the desired products in high yield under convenient reaction conditions and is applicable to a broad substrate scope. A plausible mechanism for the reaction involving a frustrated Lewis pair pathway is proposed based on spectroscopic characterization (e.g., 13C NMR) of the reaction intermediates.
