Abstract
A diradical with engineered g-asymmetry was synthesized by grafting a nitroxide radical onto the [Y(Pc)2]⋅ radical platform. Various spectroscopic techniques and computational studies revealed that the electronic structures of the two spin systems remained minimally affected within the diradical system. Fluid-solution Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiments revealed a weak exchange coupling with |J| ~ 0.014 cm-1, subsequently rationalized by CAS-SCF calculations. Frozen solution continuous-wave (CW) EPR experiments showed a complicated and power-dependent spectrum that eluded analysis using the point-dipole model. Pulse EPR manipulations with varying microwave powers, or under varying magnetic fields, demonstrated that different resonances could be selectively enhanced or suppressed, based on their different tipping angles. In particular, Field-Swept Echo-Detected (FSED) spectra revealed absorptions of MW power-dependent intensities, while Field-Swept Spin Nutation (FSSN) experiments revealed two distinct Rabi frequencies. This study introduces a methodology to synthesize and characterize g-asymmetric two-spin systems, of interest in the implementation of spin-based CNOT gates.

Abstract
Rare earth bisphthalocyanines (MPc2) are of particular interest because of their behavior as single-molecular magnets, which makes them suitable for applications in molecular spintronics, high-density data storage and quantum computation. Nevertheless, MPc2 are not commercially available, and the synthesis routes are mainly focused on obtaining substituted phthalocyanines. Two preparation routes depend on the precursor: synthesis from phthalonitrile (PN) and the metalation of free or dilithium phthalocyanine (H2Pc and Li2Pc). In both options, byproducts such as free-base phthalocyanine and in the first route additional PN oligomers are generated, which influence the MPc2 yield. There are three preparation methods for these routes: heating, microwave radiation and reflux. In this research, solvothermal synthesis was applied as a new approach to prepare yttrium, lanthanum, gadolinium and terbium unsubstituted bisphthalocyanines using Li2Pc and the rare earth(III) acetylacetonates. Purification by sublimation gave high product yields compared to those reported, namely 68% for YPc2, 43% for LaPc2, 63% for GdPc2 and 62% for TbPc2, without any detectable presence of H2Pc. Characterization by infrared, Raman, ultraviolet-visible and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis revealed the main featuresof the four bisphthalocyanines, indicating the success of the synthesis of the complexes.

Abstract
The redox state of the phthalocyanine in sandwich lanthanide complexes is crucial for their applications. In this work, we demonstrate that the cation-induced supramolecular assembly of crown-substituted phthalocyanine lanthanide complexes Ln[(15C5)4Pc]2 can be used to control the redox state of the ligand simultaneously with the coordination sphere of the central metal. We achieve unprecedented redox switching of phthalocyanine ligands in a double-decker Gd(III) complex, resulting from the intramolecular inclusion of potassium cations between the decks with simultaneous twisting of the ligands (the skew angle between them decreases from 44.61 to 0.21°). Such a structural change leads to an increase in the deck-to-deck distance and drastically facilitates ligand reduction. This process was shown to be anion-dependent: only potassium salts of weak acids (KOPiv and KOAc) induce intramolecular inclusion of cations with redox switching in contrast to salts of strong acids (KBr, KOPic, KSCN, and KPF6), where such a redox process does not occur. This breakthrough opens new avenues for controlling the electrochromic properties, of phthalocyanines, along with other properties, such as electrical conductivity, optics, etc.

Abstract
1H-NMR spectroscopy of lanthanide complexes is a powerful tool for deriving spectral-structural correlations, which provide a clear link between the symmetry of the coordination environment of paramagnetic metal centers and their magnetic properties. In this work, we have first synthesized a series of homo- (M = M* = Dy) and heteronuclear (M ≠ M* = Dy/Y and Dy/Tb) triple-decker complexes [(BuO)8Pc]M[(BuO)8Pc]M*[(15C5)4Pc], where BuO- and 15C5- are, respectively, butoxy and 15-crown-5 substituents on phthalocyanine (Pc) ligands. We provide an algorithmic approach to assigning the 1H-NMR spectra of these complexes and extracting the axial component of the magnetic susceptibility tensor, χax. We show how this term is related to the nature of the lanthanide ion and the shape of its coordination polyhedron, providing an experimental basis for further theoretical interpretation of the revealed correlations.

Abstract
A C4h symmetrically substituted phthalocyanine, 1,8,15,22-tertrakis(2,4-dimethylpent-3-oxy)phthalocyanine (H2 TdMPPc), was used to synthesize Tb3+ -phthalocyanine double-decker complexes ([Tb(TdMPPc)2 ]s). Because H2 TdMPPc has C4h symmetry, S,S, R,R, and meso isomers of [Tb(TdMPPc)2 ] were obtained depending on the difference in the direction of the coordination plane of two C4h -type phthalocyanines with respect to a central Tb3+ ion. We investigated the physical properties of these [Tb(TdMPPc)2 ] isomers, including their single-ion magnetic properties, and found that the spin-reversal energy barrier (Ueff ) of the meso isomer was apparently higher than that of the enantiomers. Detailed crystal structural analyses indicated that the meso isomer has a more symmetrical structure than do the enantiomers, thereby suggesting that the higher Ueff of the meso isomer originated from the more highly symmetrical structure.

Abstract
The detailed knowledge about the structure of multinuclear paramagnetic lanthanide complexes for the targeted design of these compounds with special magnetic, sensory, optical and electronic properties is a very important task. At the same time, establishing the structure of such multinuclear paramagnetic lanthanide complexes in solution, using NMR is a difficult task, since several paramagnetic centers act simultaneously on the resulting chemical shift of a particular nucleus. In this paper, we have demonstrated the possibility of molecular structure determination in solution on the example of binuclear triple-decker lanthanide(III) complexes with tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyanine Ln2[(15C5)4Pc]3 {where Ln = Tb (1) and Dy (2)} by quantitative analysis of the pseudo-contact lanthanide-induced shifts (LIS). The symmetry of complexes was used for the simplification of the calculation of pseudo-contact shifts on the base of the expression for the magnetic susceptibility tensor in the arbitrary oriented magnetic axis system. Good agreement between the calculated and experimental shifts in the 1H NMR spectra indicates the similarity of the structure for the complexes 1 and 2 in solution of CDCl3 and the structure in the crystalline phase, found from the data of the X-ray structural study of the similar complex Lu2[(15C5)4Pc]3. The described approach can be useful for LIS analysis of other polynuclear symmetric lanthanide complexes.

Abstract
Abstract
Possessing unique physicochemical properties, phthalocyanines are widely used as active components of supramolecular ensembles and nanomaterials. The functional properties of phthalocyanine-based materials are governed by not only the structure of their discotic molecules, but also the character of their intermolecular interactions, which determine both the self-assembly mechanism and the structure of such systems. This review discusses the experimental approaches, which are based on the notions of colloid and coordination chemistry that enable one to control intermolecular interactions in low-dimensional supramolecular ensembles based on phthalocyanines and metallocomplexes thereof. Using double-decker crown-substituted lanthanide phthalocyaninates as an example, it is shown how one- and two-dimensional nanomaterials with different properties can be obtained from the same type of building blocks employing a set of colloid-chemical methods. Such materials are, in particular, capable for controlled absorption of visible light in ultrathin films and can be employed as conducting one-dimensional components of planar elements for organic electronics.

Abstract
Based on 4,4′-[1,3/4-phenilenebis(oxy)]phthalodinitriles, the mixture of phthalocyaninates of various structures with rare-earth metals were obtained by template fusion method minimizing the side polymerization processes. Target monophthalocyaninates were isolated from the reaction mixture and purified using column and then gel permeation chromatography. The compounds were characterized by NMR, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The spectral properties were studied and the aggregation behavior of the synthesized Er, Yb, and Lu phthalocyaninates in chloroform, acetone, and tetrahydrofuran was determined. It has been shown that lutetium complexes with 3,4-dicyanophenoxyphenoxy ligands are the least stable and least resistant to aggregation in solution, while erbium and ytterbium phthalocyaninates proved to be stable in all studied media. The quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes in chloroform and tetrahydrofuran were calculated.

Abstract
Achievement of information storage at molecular level remains a pressing task in miniaturization of computing technology. One of the promising approaches for its practical realization is development of nanoscale molecular switching materials including redox-active systems. The present work demonstrates a concept of expansion of a number of available redox-states of self-assembled monolayers through supramolecular approach. For this, the authors synthesized an octopus-like heteroleptic terbium(III) bisphthalocyaninate bearing one ligand with eight thioacetate-terminated "tentacles" (octopus-Pc) and a ligand with four crown-ether moieties (H2 [(15C5)4 Pc]). It is shown that octopus-Pc forms stable monolayers on gold, where its face-on orientation allows for subsequent binding of crown-phthalocyanine molecules via potassium ion bridges. This chemistry is utilized to form a heterogeneous bilayer, in which a single molecule thick adlayer brings an additional redox-state to the system, thus expanding the multistability of the system as a whole. All four redox states available to this system exhibit characteristic absorbance in visible range, allowing for the switching to be easily read out using optical density measurements. The proposed approach can be used in wide range of switchable materials-single-molecule magnets, conductive, and optical devices, etc.

Abstract
Controlled self-assembly and rapid disintegration of supramolecular nanowires is potentially useful for ecology-friendly organic electronics. Herein, a novel method exploiting the binding between crown-substituted double-decker lanthanide phthalocyaninates (ML2, M = Lu, Ce, Tb) and K+ ions is applied for the one-step fabrication of macroscopically long conductive one-dimensional quasi-metal-organic frameworks. Their properties are controlled by the size of the lanthanide ion guiding the assembly through either intra- or intermolecular interactions. A LuL2 linker with a small interdeck distance yields fully conjugated intermolecular-bonded K+-LuL2 nanowires with a thickness of 10-50 nm, a length of up to 50 μm, and a conductivity of up to 11.4 S cm-1, the highest among them being reported for phthalocyanine assemblies. The large size of CeL2 and TbL2 leads to the formation of mixed intra- and intermolecular K+-ML2 phases with poor electric properties. A field-assisted method is developed to deposit aligned conductive K+-LuL2 assemblies on solids. The solid-supported nanowires can be disintegrated into starting components in a good aprotic solvent for further recycling.

Abstract
A sextuple-decker heteroleptic phthalocyanine heterometallic compound (1) with a subunit arrangement of {(Pc)Sm(Pc)Cd(Pc*)Cd(Pc*)Cd(Pc)Sm(Pc)} has been prepared and analyzed using various spectroscopic instruments, in which four unsubstituted phthalocyanine anions (Pc) and two substituted analogues (Pc*) with n-pentoxyl substituents at eight peripheral positions are connected through the complexation of two Sm(III) and three Cd(II) ions. In particular, its sextuple-decker structure has been disclosed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The solution and gel glass forms of this compound display third-order nonlinear optical properties due to the intrinsic conjugated nature over the sextuple-decker sandwich complex.

Abstract
Herein we report single-crystal X-ray diffraction characterization and complementary solution studies of supramolecular interaction between potassium salts and heteroleptic homo- and heteronuclear triple-decker crown phthalocyaninates [(15C5)4Pc]M*[(15C5)4Pc]M(Pc) or [M*,M], where M* and M = Y and/or Tb. Our results evidence that, in contrast to the previously studied crown-substituted phthalocyanines, the interaction of K+ cations with [M*,M] does not induce their intermolecular aggregation. Instead, the cations reversibly intercalate between the crown-substituted phthalocyanine ligands, resulting in switching of the coordination polyhedron of the metal center M* from square-antiprismatic to square-prismatic. In the case of terbium(III) complexes, such a switching alters their magnetic properties, which can be read-out by 1H NMR spectroscopy. For [Tb*,Y], such a switching causes an almost 25% increase in the axial component of the magnetic susceptibility tensor. Even though the polyhedron of the paramagnetic center in [Y*,Tb] is not switched, minor structural perturbations associated with the overall reorganization of the receptor also cause smaller, but nevertheless appreciable, growth of the axial anisotropy. The observed effects render the studied complexes as molecular switches with tunable magnetic properties.

Abstract
Reaction of (2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octabutylphthalocyaninato)lanthanide(iii) acetylacetonates (BuPcLn(acac), 1a-c, Ln = Lu (a), Eu (b), La (c)) with a tetrakis(5,7-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-6H-1,4-diazepino)[2,3-b,g,l,q]porphyrazine ligand (tBuPhDzPzH2, 2) produced sandwich compounds (tBuPhDzPz)Ln(BuPc) (3a-c), which represent the first heteroleptic double-deckers incorporating both Pc and DzPz decks. A combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry, UV-Vis/NIR, MCD, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and square-wave voltammetry provided unambiguous characterization of target complexes 3 indicating that their spectral and electrochemical properties are generally intermediate with respect to their homoleptic relatives. Based on the data of solution-state 1H-1H NMR (COSY, NOESY) correlation spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations, a dimerization tendency of compounds 3 proportional to the Ln(iii) ion size was found. The spectroelectrochemical study of 3 and the corresponding homoleptic double-deckers revealed a pronounced tendency to aggregation of the one-electron oxidized forms of DzPz-containing double-decker complexes compared to homoleptic Pc2Ln compounds.

Abstract
Novel bistetrakis-4-[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenoxy]phthalocyaninato of complexes erbium, lutetium and ytterbium were synthesized using a template fusion method to prevent any polymerization process. The complexes were separated from the reaction mixtures and characterized by NMR, IR and electron absorption spectroscopy. The spectroscopic properties of the metal phthalocyaninates in chloroform, acetone and tetrahydrofuran were studied. The regular bathochromic shift in the Er-Yb-Lu series was determined. In acetone medium all the complexes obtained were found to exist in an equilibrium state between neutral and reduced forms. The linearity of Lambert-Bouger-Beer curves makes it possible to study the kinetics of redox processes in the presence of phenylhydrazine and bromine. The lutetium complex showed better reducing properties and turned fully into the reduced form, while the erbium and ytterbium ones changed only partially. Upon oxidizing all the phthalocyaninates transformed into a mixture of oxidized and neutral-radical forms. The extinction coefficients and effective redox constants were calculated.

Abstract
In this study heteroleptic A7B type novel Lu(iii) and Eu(iii) lanthanide phthalocyanines (LnPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)]) with high extinction coefficients have been synthesized as candidate photosensitizers with reaction yields higher than 33%. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and EuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)], respectively, were measured 17% and 1.4% by the direct method in THF. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] in THF is the highest among lutetium(iii) bis-phthalocyanine complexes to date. The photodynamic efficacy of the heteroleptic lanthanide phthalocyanines was evaluated by measuring cell viabilities of A549 and BEAS-2B lung cells, selected to representing in vitro models for testing cancer and normal cells against potential drugs. The cell viabilities demonstrated concentration dependent behavior and were varied by the type of phthalocyanines complexes. Irradiation of the cells for 30 minutes with LED array at 660 nm producing flux of 0.036 J cm−2 s−1 increased cell death for LuPcPox-OAc, LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and ZnPc. The IC50 concentrations of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and ZnPc were determined to be below 10 nM for both cell lines, agreeing very well with the singlet oxygen quantum yield measurements. These findings suggest that LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and particularly LuPcPox-OAc are promising drug candidates enabling lowered dose and shorter irradiation time for photodynamic therapy. Novel bis-lanthanide Lu(iii) and Eu(iii) phthalocyanine complexes have been designed/synthesized and tested their photodynamic efficacy for A549 and BEAS-2B cells in vitro conditions as candidate photosensitizers in PDT.![]()

Seven-coordinate Ln III complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour. Dalton Trans 2020; 49:15404-15416. Abstract
The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Abstract
The preparation and structural characterization of a pair of scandium(III) phthalocyanine hydroxide complexes were achieved by reaction of PcScCl with alkali metal alkoxides, likely via hydrolysis of soluble PcSc-alkoxide intermediates. A Sc[Formula: see text]Li[Formula: see text]-OH)[Formula: see text] cubane supported by two distorted Pc rings of the form (PcSc)[Formula: see text]-OH)[Formula: see text]Li[Formula: see text](THF)(DME) was isolated from the reaction of PcScCl with LiO[Formula: see text]Pr, while a simpler alkali-metal-free [Pc[Formula: see text]Sc[Formula: see text]-OH)[Formula: see text](THF)] was obtained from addition of NaO[Formula: see text]Bu; both structures are reminiscent of bent metallocenes, with dihedral angles between the two Pc rings of 50.8 and 37.7[Formula: see text]respectively. A soluble PcScOH material can also be obtained directly via hydrolysis of insoluble PcScCl in approximately 95:5 THF:water. Reduction of the Pc ring of PcScCl using KC[Formula: see text] is reversible and generates Pc[Formula: see text] and Pc[Formula: see text]-containing materials that were characterized via UV-vis spectroscopy and, where appropriate EPR and [Formula: see text]H NMR spectroscopy; analogous reductions of the PcScOH-based species were irreversible. Exposure of the air-sensitive, reduced PcScCl-based species to ambient atmosphere generated PcScOH materials analogous to the direct hydrolysis route.

Abstract
The preparation and structural characterization of a series of lanthanide and uranium(IV) phthalocyanine halide complexes were achieved by reaction of the corresponding metal halide with Li2 Pc. A preliminary survey of their reactivity includes ring reduction of Li(THF)4 [PcUCl3 ] with KC8 leading to the first structurally characterized Pc4- actinide complex, hydrolysis of PcDyCl(DMSO) to PcDyOH(H2 O)3 and preparation of a unique trimeric triangular Li(PcDy)3 (OH)4 (H2 O) cluster.

Abstract
REE complexes with cyclic aromatic ligands are ranked as the molecular materials with both electronic functionality and a single-molecule magnet behavior at temperatures lower 80 K. At the temperature close to room, they display a positive magnetocaloric effect (MCE) often comparable with one in ferromagnetics. We were determined MCE during the magnetization of both (5,10,15,20-tetra(4-tert-butylphenylporphinato))ytterbium(III)chloride, (Cl)YbT[Formula: see text]BuPP and (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphinato)ytterbium(III)chloride, (Cl)YbTPP in their aqueous suspensions over the temperature range of 278–320 K and in magnetic fields from zero to 1 T by the direct microcalorimetric method. Specific heat capacity in the solid of (Cl)YbT[Formula: see text]BuPP/(Cl)YbTPP has been directly determined in zero magnetic fields using differential scanning calorimetry. Thermodynamic parameters of ytterbium(III) complexes magnetization namely enthalpy/entropy change was determined. To improve understanding of the correlation between (Cl)YbT[Formula: see text]BuPP/(Cl)YbTPP magnetic properties and its electronic structure, we have compared magnetic behavior of paramagnets studied with those for (Cl)MTPP where M = Gd, Eu, Tm.

Abstract
Phthalocyanines possess unique optical and electronic properties and thus are widely used in (opto)electronic devices, coatings, photodynamic therapy, etc. Extension of their π-electron systems could produce molecular materials with red-shifted absorption for a broader range of applications. However, access to expanded phthalocyanine analogues with more than four isoindoline units is challenging due to the limited synthetic possibilities. Here, we report the controlled on-surface synthesis of a gadolinium-supernaphthalocyanine macrocycle and its open-chain counterpart poly(benzodiiminoisoindoline) on a silver surface from a naphthalene dicarbonitrile precursor. Their formation is controlled by the on-surface high-dilution principle and steered by different metal templates, i.e., gadolinium atoms and the bare silver surface, which also act as oligomerization catalysts. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, the chemical structures along with the mechanical and electronic properties of these phthalocyanine analogues with extended π-conjugation are investigated in detail. Extending the π‐conjugation of phthalocyanine dyes, while synthetically challenging, has the potential to produce desirable new molecular materials. Here, the authors use a templated on‐surface approach to synthesize several extended phthalocyanine derivatives from the same building block, including a lanthanide superphthalocyanine and an open‐chain polycyanine.

Abstract
Novel heteroleptic Er(iii) and Yb(iii) naphthalocyaninato-phthalocyaninates containing an octa-phenyl or octa-phenoxysubstituted naphthalocyanine deck were synthesised and identified by 1H NMR, EPR and high resolution MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry. Direct synthesis of novel homoleptic Yb(iii) bis (octa-phenylnaphthalocyaninate) was carried out. Downfield lanthanide induced shifts of the aromatic protons in target compounds were observed compared with the corresponding diamagnetic Lu(iii) complexes. In the near-IR absorption spectra, an increase in ionic radius from Lu(iii) to Er(iii) resulted in a bathochromic shift of the intervalence band up to 1473 nm. This work presents the first experimental EPR study of Yb(iii) bis naphthalocyaninate, where a set of magnetic parameters and properties (including spin, magnitude and sign of magnetic anisotropy parameter D, increased splitting in a crystal field, ferromagnetic f-π interaction etc.) were determined and interpreted by both EPR and SQUID techniques and supported by theoretical considerations.

Abstract
Porphyrin-based molecules are actively studied as dual function theranostics: fluorescence-based imaging for diagnostics and fluorescence-guided therapeutic treatment of cancers. The intrinsic fluorescent and photodynamic properties of the bimodal molecules allows for these theranostic approaches. Several porphyrinoids bearing both hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic units at their periphery have been developed for the aforementioned applications, but better tumor selectivity and high efficacy to destroy tumor cells is always a key setback for their use. Another issue related to their effective clinical use is that, most of these chromophores form aggregates under physiological conditions. Nanomaterials that are known to possess incredible properties that cannot be achieved from their bulk systems can serve as carriers for these chromophores. Porphyrinoids, when conjugated with nanomaterials, can be enabled to perform as multifunctional nanomedicine devices. The integrated properties of these porphyrinoid-nanomaterial conjugated systems make them useful for selective drug delivery, theranostic capabilities, and multimodal bioimaging. This review highlights the use of porphyrins, chlorins, bacteriochlorins, phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines as well as their multifunctional nanodevices in various biomedical theranostic platforms.

Abstract
For the purpose of further exploring the effect of nonperipherally attached substituents on single-ion magnet (SIMs) performance, tetrasubstituted bis[1,8,15,22-tetrakis(3-pentyloxy)phthalocyaninato]terbium double-deckers, in both the reduced form TbH[Pc(α-OC5H11)4]2 (1) and the neutral form Tb[Pc(α-OC5H11)4]2 (2), were prepared. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for 2 unambiguously demonstrates the pinwheellike molecular structure with C4 symmetry. Magnetic investigations of the two bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium double-deckers reveal their characteristic SIM nature. 2 exhibits SIM performance superior to that of 1, as revealed by the larger energy barrier of 466 K for the former species and 431 K for the latter species due to the presence of organic radical-f (radical-Tb) interactions. The enhanced SIM performance of 2 in comparison to 1 actually stems from the presence of radical-f interactions and an enhanced ligand field strength. The latter positive factor is indicated by the electrostatic potential around the terbium ion on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
